17 YEAR OLD IGBO BOY REPRESENTING NIGERIA IN A DEBATE IN 1957

You'll love watching this. The Igbo boy named Boniface Offokaja was in his element here. He was just bristling with confidence and putting across his points in a clear manner. His elocution was impressive too. It's hard to believe he was just 17...and this was 1957! You see the kind of products the Christian Missionary Schools were churning out way back then?

The Ghana girl said she saw Nigerians as inferior because they were all over Ghana begging (no wonder they kicked us out in the 60s....when they got fed up with us littering their streets with beggers lipsrsealed), however, Boniface soon put her in her place! smiley

Herdsmen Carrying AK47 are Criminals Declares Anambra Governor

By John Ndu

Awka, March 3, 2021 (MOI) Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has declared that any herdsman found in possession of an AK47 rifle must be apprehended as a criminal.

Gov. Obiano explained that Anambra has permitted an organised system of herders, who were registered under a Miyetti Allah group to operate in the state.

He said that henceforth the state would no longer tolerate itinerant herdsmen.

Gov. Obiano said this during a one day Stakeholders Security Summit which took place at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre, Awka.

The programme was aimed at mobilising all stakeholders, comprising traditional leaders, clergies, community leaders, Youths and general public to proffer solutions toward improved participation in policing their respective communities.

“Such a measure will enhance security consciousness, especially during this challenging period.’’

The event was convened within the security framework as part of the strategies to install an all-inclusive action plan toward addressing the many internal security challenges in the state.

Obiano, who said there was such a headcount last year, maintained that after the new census, that would commence any time soon, police and other security agencies in the state should treat any roaming herdsmen in the state as criminals.

The governor said: “you should treat any itinerant herdsmen as criminals. Security reports show that it is these itinerant headers that commit all manner of crimes to have their way through.

“They are the people that kill, kidnap, rape and harass the people with impunity. Those of them carrying any type of firearms should be treated as armed robbers.

“We have a census of the number of herdsmen resident in Anambra state and by the last census in January last year they were 77. I have directed our new Police Commissioner to carry out another census and after the census; we will not allow herdsmen into Anambra or passing through Anambra.

“Any herdsman that carries an AK-47 is an armed robber; they are those that get involved in kidnapping and all manner of crimes in the state because they are on transit and cause trouble and go away.

“I understand that there are some traditional rulers, who have not been holding the periodic Cattle Menace Committee meetings which are headed by the Police Commissioner and such meetings are also to be held in the Local Government Areas.

“Any traditional ruler that fails to hold such meetings will have his certificate withdrawn from him because non conduct of these meetings is against the laws establishing the committee.’’

Gov. Obiano, who said the security and welfare of the people, remained top priority of his government over the past seven years.

He added that within the period under review, he had purchased not less than 500 vehicles for the police and fuel for all duty police vehicles for the period.

The governor urged stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders, vigilance groups, and youths to strive to keep the state’s record as one of the safest states in the country, while vouching his government’s continued support in that regard.

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, who was represented during the event by Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Joseph Egbunike.

The IG expressed dissatisfaction at the activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who he accused of fomenting trouble in the South-East, including attacking and burning police stations.

He tasked elders in the state to prevail on the secessionist group to stop their activities in the state as it was capable of worsening the security situation in the geopolitical zone.

Other dignitaries at the occasion include the Commissioner of Police Anambra State Command CP Monday Bala Kuryas, and the Chairman Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe.

Others are Heads of Security Agencies, Chairman Anambra State Vigilance Services, a retired CP Ikechukwu Aduba, top Government functionaries, Youths and Civil Society Organisations as well as police Officers and men drawn from the state command. (MOI)

Strong lobby on to get Brazil’s Embraer locate Africa service centre in Nigeria’s Anambra State

The Willie Obiano administration in Anambra State, with few months to its exit date in November this year, is pushing up a partnership deal with Air Peace, West Africa’s leading airliner, to format its incoming airport at Umuleri, by getting Embraer Corporation of Brazil, the world’s fourth largest civilian aircraft manufacturer, to locate a service centre for all of Africa in the state.

Details of the state government’s move have not yet been made public. Governor Obiano has since last year been in talks with the Air Peace founder, Allen Onyema, to lure the Brazilians into siting a service centre at the Anambra International Cargo Airport at Umuleri, which may be inaugurated later this year.

Africa and the decade of COVID-19 (5)
Strong lobby on to get Brazil’s Embraer locate Africa service centre in Nigeria’s Anambra StateAt the delivery last week of Air Peace E195 –E2 in Lagos, Onyema had appealed to the Brazilian Embassy in Abuja to advise the Embraer Corporation in Sao Paulo, to seriously consider building a service centre in Nigeria to cater for the African continent. The brand-new airplane, registered as 5N-BYF, is the first of 13 Embraer aircraft ordered by the airliner for its African regional routes.

According to C. Don Adinuba, the commissioner for information and public enlightenment, Governor Obiano had told a virtual discussion with some members of his administration working on the project that: “As the first carrier in Africa to purchase Embraer’s E series, which is the latest, Air Peace, with our support, is in a strong position to lobby the manufacturer to bring such a centre to our state.”

The Anambra international cargo airport, with 3.7 km runway and an 11-storey terminal building, pushing off as Nigeria’s second biggest airport, after the Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed, is designed to accommodate at least one hanger to service different kinds of aircraft, according to Ben Chiobi, a former Nigerian Air Force pilot, retired air force Air Vice Marshall and special adviser to Governor Obiano on creative security.

Chiobi, who also used to be a military attaché at the Nigerian Embassy in Paris, France, is among Obiano’s team working to realise the airport before his tenure’s expiration in November.

In August last year, when he visited the airport, an impressed Onyema said his Air Peace airline company would build a hanger there.

“If Air Peace builds a hanger here, and Embraer follows suit with an African service centre, the vision of building this modern and large airport on a very large swath of land will have been realized,” stated Governor Obiano, who described Onyema as currently the greatest promoter of private diplomacy in Nigeria.

Obiano said the Air Peace chairman, with the acquisition of the new airplane from Brazil, has shown that one needs not be in government or hold any public office to effectively promote the interests of one’s country; and has boosted Nigeria’s reputation in places like South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, where Air Peace flies into, with plans to start flying into the United States, India, Israel and the United Kingdom shortly.

He said his administration didn’t set out to build just any airport, but a strategic one that will help boost traditional commerce in the state and beyond; resulting in technology transfer and transformation of the state’s economic landscape.

Anambra, a state with bustling commerce, and travelling population, has a GDP of over N4.2 trillion.

They think Abuja needs Airport more than Anambra.
I pray with investments coming in to the Airport, flight ticket to be cheapest btw 10- 20k to at least Lagos and Abuja.
I like the way Obiano is going with the standard.
Thank God they moved it from Oba.
I pray next gov will use his last blood to make sure Onitsha port becomes viable even if investing Anambra money.
Go to Apapa and see what people go through in the name of getting their containers.

Next should be to bring gas to our industrial clusters.

Anambra is already a megacity with this Airport in the Anambra North.

Thank God Abum nwa omambala.
You are very correct. Check anyone that says Anambra doesn't need an airport, he/she is either not from the state or something else. The airport should have been built 10yrs ago. But importantly it is being built today even bigger and better than it should have been 10yrs ago. Rail? I don't if it is still on the exclusive list of the federal government. But Lagos is building rail also.

I can only imagine how much land along this access road costs now!

Please Government should ensure the land is reserved for 5 star hotels, shopping malls, amusement parks and other tourist entertainment that will help boost other facilities around the airport.

There should be NO market or eyesore type of building along that brand new road.
Someone within the government circle told me that all the lands along the airport road was equally acquired by the state government. They actually want to appropriate/regulate the lands on that route. For me, they should allocate it to big corporations to erect their West Africa regional offices, like Embraer, Airpeace, services firms, big hospitality groups that can erect 5 star international airport hotels, etc.

Everything from the access roads, Main Airport gate, runway, taxiway, car parks, fire stations, Emergency medical clinics, 2 level terminal building, Water supply station, mini power station was well thought out!!! With more space for future expansion and development!

The official airport January 2021 Status Update video released by the state government! O'lboy, this is indeed a massive project. Everything is done at the best international standard!!!

Anambra finally has a true international airport to facilitate trade and commerce without depending on the whims and caprices of others!
I am hoping the begin planting trees, flowers and grass now around areas that no further construction is needed. Also they need beautiful trees and flowers along the main airport road all the way to the parking lots to give it the best ambiance possible!

This is truly a spectacular expose! Now i know why Obiano was hiding the project! He wanted this precise shock and awe at the magnitude of this project when it's unveiled! The guy has left his prints in the sands of time! Even in the next 100 years, It is no longer ever going to be a question if Obiano was one of the greatest Anambra governors or not. He has totally proved himself! Imagine doing this in a recession!

I agree they should begin trees and flowers planting now. Infact they should create a landscaping team to start from the junction of the airport road by the Awka- Onitsha expressway all the way to inside the airport. Also, spaces around the taxiways, apron and runway should be grassed now. Even before marking of the places with paints begin.

If i were Buhari, i will rebuild the Awka - Enugu expressway as my contribution to this project.
In the future, some people may even confuse it that it was Buhari that built the entire airport and built the expressway!

I think the FG is already working on the Onitsha-Awka expressway. From what I saw recently, they have done one of the lanes completely from Amawbia flyover end to Nteje/Ogidi. They should be moving to the other lane by now.

Anambra to work With Air Peace to bring Embraer Service Centre to the State

The Anambra State government has set in motion the machinery to work with West Africa’s leading airline, Air Peace, to get Embraer of Brazil, the world’s fourth largest civilian aircraft manufacturer, to locate a service centre for Africa in the state.

Though the details of the state government’s move are not yet made public, it is understood that Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has since last year been in talks with the Air Peace founder, Chief Allen Onyema, to get the Brazilians to cite the service centre at Anambra International Cargo Airport at Umueri which is still undergoing construction.

At the delivery last week of Air Peace E195 –E2 in Lagos, Chief Onyema made a passionate appeal to the Brazilian embassy in Abuja to advise the Embraer Corporation in Sao Paulo to build a service centre in Nigeria to cater for the African region.

The brand new plane, registered as 5N-BYF, is the first in 13 Embraer aircraft ordered by the airline for its African regional routes.

“As the first carrier in Africa to purchase Embraer’s E series, which is the latest, Air Peace, with our support, is in a strong position to lobby the manufacturer to bring such a centre to our state”, Governor Obiano said today in a virtual discussion with some members of his administration working quietly on the project.

Anambra International Cargo Airport, the second biggest airport in the country, is designed to accommodate at least one hanger to service different kinds of aircraft, according to Air Vice Marshall Ben Chiobi (retired), Special Adviser to Governor Obiano on Creative Security and a former Nigerian Air Force pilot who also used to be the military attaché at the Nigerian Embassy in Paris, France.

When he visited the airport last August, an impressed Chief Onyema pledged to build a hanger there.

“If Air Peace builds a hanger there and Embraer follows suit with an African service centre, the vision of building this modern and large airport on a very large swath of land will have been realized”, stated Chief Obiano.

“We didn’t set out to build just any airport, but a strategic one which will help boost traditional commerce in our state and beyond, but, quiet importantly, result in technology transfer and in the transformation of our economic landscape”.

Meanwhile, the state government has described Chief Onyema as the greatest current promoter of private diplomacy in Nigeria.

“Onyema”, said Governor Obiano in a message to the Air Peace chairman following the acquisition of the new plane from Brazil, “has shown that you need not be in government or hold any public office to effectively promote the interests of your country.

“It is not just in Brazil that he has boosted our reputation far better than any person but also in such places as South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates where Air Peace flies into regularly, with plans to start flying into the United States, India, Israel and the United Kingdom shortly.

“What is more, the excellent safety record of the carrier and the efficient ground and onboard services it provides, coupled with its schedule integrity, have all combined to make it compete effectively with the best airlines in the world.

“We are proud that Chief Onyema, a worthy son of Anambra State, is championing African economic integration, a Nigerian foreign policy plank, through tireless opening of regional routes.

“This is to say nothing about his promotion of national integration and unity by flying every hour to all parts of Nigeria.

“Air travel in Nigeria would have been extremely difficult if not for Chief Onyema who is not driven by the profit motive but service to humanity, starting with fellow Nigerians”.

Air Peace, which commenced commercial operations in 2013, has 30 aircraft in its fleet, with 23 more expected from both Embraer and Boeing Corporation of the United States, the world’s biggest aircraft manufacturer.

Rocksvibes234:
Dr. Godwin Maduka has cleared air on building 21 varsities across the 21 LGAs of Anambra State – a statement which haters of growth have said is impossible, not necessary and have used for various propagandas.

In a recent interview, Dr. Maduka while making reference to Dr Tunji Braithwaite popular movement of Ikoyi residents to Mushin and vice veras, said his idea of educational revolution in Anambra State is out of pure wisdom and love for Ndi Anambra.

He said that –
“The fourth estate of the realm is very vital in the development of every modern society. They act as a check on the excesses of those in power, mirror issues in the society and help start a conversation on them. However, sometimes, the quest to sell overshadows their dedication to proper journalistic tenets. Sensationalism takes over qualitative and investigative reporting.

“There are what lawyers call literal interpretation and liberal or purposive interpretation. The purposive interpretation tends to look at the intent of the statement or the purpose the statement is meant to achieve, not the literal meaning, and in this case, the intent of my statement is basically my passion and belief in education as the easiest and best means of human capacity development. Actually, people understood what I said literally, hence the sensation and not in the purposive sense of the fact that I want to prioritize education. If you recall, when Dr Tunji Braithwaite was running for presidential election, he would always say that he wanted to relocate the residents of Ikoyi to Mushin and Mushin residents to Ikoyi. People got mad, but then, people understood the literal meaning of the statement rather than the liberal or purposive explanation. He was simply implying that if the rich could have a feeling of the conditions of the poor; it will go a long way in the commitment to bridging the gap between them. There are certain truths and possibilities people find outrageous or may not seem to understand very well, yet at the end it becomes the reality.

“For emphasis, my idea of educational revolution in Anambra State comes from a keen study I did in the US. I found out that in America, Educational communities drive the economic bases. I took a trip to the Silicon Valley and I discovered how Stanford University is the brain power behind most tech start-ups. I started developing a similar idea which I can localize in my home state. I realize that if we can have educational communities around our economic bases, it will blow up the Anambra economy and double up our GDP in a short while. For example, an educational community with engineering courses as its main focus located around the Nnewi axis will contribute so much to research and development in automobiles and manufacturing. Imagine the deepening of local content and backward integration it will trigger, together with the attendant wealth and job creation. If you have an educational community around Awka, it will stimulate ICT and Technological start-ups. Likewise in the Agricultural bases of Ayamelum, Anambra east and west, an educational community will do a lot in the research of hybrids products and also develop models geared towards Agric-economics and agro processing which is a billion dollar industry. So in a nutshell, I was trying to talk about 21 specialized university campuses. We must revolutionize education to make it useful and that is what we want to do in other sectors.

“My idea is that I want Anambra to be the educational hub of sub-Saharan Africa. Las Vegas where I live has about 10 universities. I am a man of big dreams and ideas. I did same in Umuchukwu, a village that was on the lowest rung of development and I built a city out of it. I am a product of possibilities. I went to America from the village and excelled beyond measures, and built six world class hospitals in the state of Nevada. I represent hope and inspire people to dream. With my story, it is obvious that regardless of your background, your dreams are valid.
He has done well to clear the air.

The bolded is so critically important i had to re-emphasize it in this post. I could not visit the airport during my last visit, but i drove past Umuleri/Nteje area. The area is becoming another Onitsha with lots of commercial shops and residential houses coming up. In southeast Asian countries, the heart beat of their economies are their airport cities. The proper use of the areas around the airport determine so much more than local business people using it.

Apart from supporting business and logistics in the entire region, the airport has the potential to massively improve tourism in the region. Hopefully, the state government can sign an MOU with a reputable company like those doing the Awka Millennium city and Onitsha Luxury place to regulate the development around the airport city project, to ensure optimum value of the location for the state. Five star hotels, true shopping malls (Not supermarkets we call malls in Nigeria), residential buildings/ activities, high rise office complexes that will eventually be rented by banks, airlines etc, and other recreational outdoor facilities as amusement parks should be reserved in the area. The area being half way between Awka and Onitsha should be purpose planned and developed as the heart beat of the state.

Once the land around the airport is allowed to be built up with shops and stores like Onitsha, it becomes very difficult to develop what was intended by demolishing structures. Thus, now is the time to ensure the area is secured away from land prospectors whose central strategy is simply to build an open market of lock-up shops there as they do in every other location.
Very insightful piece

The gov't should do up the approach road to the airport well.....at least 4 lanes, with trees on either side and carpet grass on the verges. Also, land on either side of the airport road should be reserved for hotels, conference centres, office blocks and aviation logistics and related coys!

I totally subscribe to what you have penned down the type of investments/development to be made on the international airport road. The main airport access road is actually 6 lanes approach road[ from Nteje/Express junction

latest updates of works at the new Anambra int'l airport.

This clip shows best just how massive the airport is going to be, and also shows another construction besides the control tower and terminal we're used to seeing. I'm impressed with what's shown so far.....the level/quality of work done. You can tell by watching just how solid the taxiway/apron is, but i doubt if they can finish this by april! There's still a lot more work left to be done!

Mktinsight owns that Twitter handle. It is okay, but we should not pay further attention to bitter wicked people. Whatever his reasons are for opposing development in Anambra state (especially the international airport), he will fail. I do wish him to remain alive to see the airport. Perhaps someday, he will fly through it and attempt to destroy public infrastructure there out of hate, then he will be finally arrested.

I do think he is Igbo, but those types of Igbos that consider only their hometown as Igboland. In their mind, something outside his hometown or in another state makes him furiously jealous.
Very insightful

Terminal roofing almost completed willieisworking!
Americans use more of steel for their public buildings, that makes their buildings more beautiful and exquisite. This is a superb novel introduction in Nigeria building industry. China Railway Company is handling this Anambra international airport terminal. A total navigation from the usual mediocre Nigerian block and mortar

This is 2021 Aguleri Ofala festival.

Brief history of Ofala festival:

The Ofala Festival is an annual ceremony practiced by Igbo people, particularly the indigenes of Onitsha, Umueri, Umuoji and other neighboring communities such as Aguleri, Nnewi and Ukpo in Dunukofia Local Government Area.

It serves as a rites of renewal of the king or Igwe or Obi and it is similar to the Igue festival in Benin and the Ine, Osi or Ogbanigbe Festival in many mid-West Igbo communities of Nigeria. The term ofala, is derived from two Igbo words - ọfọ (English: authority) and ala (English: land).

The festival is celebrated within two days mostly in October by the Obi (English: king) and is a customary obligation that must be performed every couple of years without fail
