5 Must-See Destinations In Eastern Nigeria
BY MICHAEL BAMIDELE

Ogbunike Cave. | Image: Wikipedia

The Eastern part of Nigeria holds some of West Africa’s finest ancient sites. Filled with history, some of the sites have become must-visits by tourists.

Ogbunike Caves
The Ogbunike Caves is a collection of caves situated in a valley with tropical rain forest behind the “Ogba” hills in Ogbunike, Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria. The caves which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Eastern Nigeria is on the tentative list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific And Cultural Organisation’s World Heritage Site.

To reach the inner caves, you will climb 317 steps. As per tradition, visitors must remove their shoes before entering the caves. And women who are having their monthly cycle cannot go in. There is an annual festival called “Ime Ogbe” celebrated in commemoration of the discovery of the caves.

Igbo leaded bronze scabbard found in the uncovered shrine at Isaiah Anozie’s compound in Igbo Ukwu Made around the 9th century – Twitter – Ukpuru

Igbo-Ukwu Museum
In Anambra state, Igbo-Ukwu is notable for three archaeological sites where excavations have found bronze artefacts from a highly sophisticated bronze metal-working culture dating perhaps to the ninth or tenth century, centuries before other known bronzes of the region.

The first of these sites is called Igbo Isaiah which was uncovered in 1938 by Isaiah Anozie, a local villager, who found the bronze works while digging beside his home. Formal excavations by the archaeologist Thurstan Shaw in 1959 at the request of the Nigerian government resulted in the discovery of two other sites, Igbo Richard and Igbo Jonah, containing the remains of an ancient culture.

Artefacts have included jewellery, ceramics, a corpse adorned in what appears to be regalia, and many assorted bronzes, copper, and iron objects. Some of these contain materials that are evidence of a long-distance trading system extending to Egypt. Radiocarbon dating placed the sites around the tenth century or earlier, which would make the Igbo-Ukwu culture the earliest-known example of bronze casting in the region. The craftsmen were working centuries before those who made the more well-known Ife bronzes.

National War Museum, Umuahia
Established in 1985, the National War Museum houses the largest memorabilia of the Nigerian Civil War which took place between 1967 and 1970.

The museum is located at Ebite Amafor in Isingwu Autonomous Community in the Umuahia North Local Government Area. The museum’s location was chosen because it was where the bunker housing the famous shortwave radio “the Voice of Biafra” was transmitted from. It has three galleries featuring items on the traditional warfare, armed forces and Nigerian civil war weapons. The weapons are from both the Nigerian military and defunct Biafra.

There are also outdoor displays of warships, military aircraft, armoured tanks, and “Ogbunigwe” (bombs produced locally by Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War).

Awhum Waterfall and Cave
Awhum Waterfall is located in Amaugwe village of Awhum town in Udi Local Government Area in Enugu, Nigeria. A result of a titanic outcrop of granite rock with water tumbling from the top to form a stream, the waterfall is beautiful at any time of the year.

A section of the waterfall is always warm through the season. According to the locals, the water is therapeutic. Awhum waterfall is 30 metres high and is located close to Awhum Monastery. It takes about 45 minutes’ walk from the parking spot to the fall, but it is worth the trek.

Anambra Celebrates Mayor Ezeajughi of Brent, London

The government of Anambra State has heartily congratulated Councillor Ernest Ezeajughi, the trailblazing scientist who was recently re-elected to serve a second four-year term as the Mayor of Brent.

Ernest Nnaama Ezeajughi first made worldwide headlines in 2019 when he was first elected the Mayor of the London Borough of Brent in England with a population of 331,000.

According to a statement in Awka on Tuesday, September 22nd 2020 by the Anbambra State Commissioner for Information, C. Don Adinuba, both Governor Willie Obiano and his wife, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, have spoken to Mayor Ezeajughi, who was also the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) leader in the United Kingdom, on his victory.

Born in Awgbu town of Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Ezeajughi had his education at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka before sojourning abroad for greener pastures.

Ezeajughi’s re-election is indeed a testament to his impressive achievements in his inaugural tenure of service to the Brent people.

In a world where many Nigerians are generally stigmatized, Ezeajughi is a shining light that deserves consummate emulation and commendation.
It is striking that Ezeajughi won re-election following the first ever virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the council.

Not even the Coronavirus pandemic across the globe could dim his good works.

The Anambra State government is thrilled that Councillor Ezeajughi will during his mayoral tenure continue to promote Brent and participate in activities that will help the economic, social, cultural and environmental well-being of Brent and its residents.
Also, Ezeajughi will continue to support his chosen charities.

Ezeajughi is in league with so many other Anambra achievers all over the world.

Two months ago, Professor Charles Egbu emerged as the first black Vice-Chancellor of a British university when he was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University in England.

Patrick Okigbo from Ojoto in Idemili South Local Government Area, is one of the 12 Senior Fellows named this year at Kennedy School of Government at Harvard while Chinedu Obi from Ifite Dunu in Dunukofia LGA was in July the best student in the oldest and most prestigeous medical school in Russia, the first time an African gas been so honoured.

Another Anambra State world-beater, Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, was also recently appointed as head and senior director of the Africa Investment Forum by the President of African Development Bank Group (AFDB), Dr Akinwumi Adesina. A highly accomplished international corporate lawyer, Anohu-Amazu was before the appointment a member of the London Stock Exchange Africa Advisory Board.

Ezeajughi, alongside the other achievers, has amply shown the world that Anambra State is the esteemed “Lght of the Nation”.

Signed

C. Don Adinuba

Airports are super capital intensive that even rich western countries can develop them in one single swing. The development of airports are phased over so many years so that the resources generated through operation of the airports are ploughed into upgrading of the infrastructure at the airport. To develop this airport to its full specification, the development must be phased over a few years. The Phase 1 is the very important to get it operational and begin to generate resources that can be used for its further development.

Phase 1: By April 2021: Completion of 3.5KM Runway, 12 stories high Control Tower and Basic terminal building
Operational capability: Daylight domestic flights

Phase 2: By December 2025: Completion of Taxiway, Permanent Passenger and Cargo terminals, Installation of Cat 2 ILS and Airfield lighting system. Completion of aviation fuel depot at the airport linked by pipeline to Orient Modular refinery.
Operational capability: Night landing, International Flights, Major aviation fuel facility for the West African sub-region.

Phase 3: By December 2050: Completion of the second parallel runway and taxiways. Expansion of the Passenger and Cargo terminal to full capacity.
Operational capability: More international airlines use the airport as a regional transit hub for continental flights.
Very I insightful. You must have spent some energy in projection before coming up with this. Very useful input.

Addressing the Press after the tour, Prof. Soludo said that the estate is what a modern livable smart city should be in terms of the facilities that are planned for the estate.

The formost economics professor thanked governor Willie Obiano for thinking ahead of his compatriots for making the place a reality, though public private partnership (PPP) and described the Chairman of M-P Infrastructures, Chief Clem Nwogbo who are the promoters of the estate as a quintessential Onye Anambra that has keyed into the Aku Luo Uno mantra of the Willie Obiano administration.

The erudite professor further noted that the estate is in line with what governor Willie Obiano envisioned in the Anambra Vision 2070, which has its core message is to have Anambra that will become one major liveable smart city in the nearest future.

According to the Chairman of M-P Infrastructures, the promoters of the estate, Chief Clem Nwogbo, they want to replicate what would be seen in western world, as the estate will have parks, adequate security, teleconferencing, lakes and anything you will expect from five generation world.

Prof. Soludo had on arrival inspected the access roads to the estate being constructed by the M-P Infrastructures Limited.[/quote]Very good development. Awka Millennium City is gonna be our own Banana Island and Asokoro/Maitama in the southeast.

They should plant trees on both sides of the road to make the drive to and from the airport scenic and impressive for visitors, investors and tourists coming into the state. Also, world class route signage should be included in the construction.
Very important, because both sides of road is still virgin lands.

From the information available they have done earthworks and granite up to 8km, remaining 2km to reach the airport site before the actual asphalt starts. As at the time of getting the pictures, massive work that involves about 5 major contractors were at the airport precinct working to beat the commissioning date.
Very interesting.

If they get the control tower & the runway right, the rest such as tarmac, taxiway and terminal building can easily be built and perfected over time.

The terminal building can be built in phases so that the first phase is a small building that basically allows the airport to begin operations as soon as the runway and tower are ready.

Gradual improvements over time with building the permanent imposing edifice of the final terminal building and completion of the taxiways can be done gradually as the airport is in operation and continues to develop. Similar to how Uyo airport started operations with the Runway, Control tower and a temporary terminal building. But today has completed the airport taxiways, and now working on the permanent superstructure of the final terminal building.
I think the government is going forward with the terminal building on the 3D, which appears to be top notch. Instead of building this and coming back to build another one in few years time

IDENNAA:
ANAMBRA State is making plans to build a world-class market that befits Awka, the state capital.

Briefing newsmen in his office at Awka, the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, Market and Wealth Creation and Industry, Anambra State, Dr. Christian Chukwuma Madubuko stated that the market to be built must be of international standard.

He argued that the state capital is long overdue for a standard market, noting that the congested Eke Awka Market does not portray the right image needed to profile the state, the most populous and industrialized state in the South East in Nigeria. He cited the Austrian standard as the benchmark for the international market. “This means the market must have motor parks, fire station, and every other thing you can think of in a modern market.”

The commissioner condemned the attitude of some individuals who park their vehicles anywhere they like in the market; and some market leaders who build illegal shops and all sorts of attachments inside the market, to make money for themselves, describing the situation as abnormal and totally unacceptable by Anambra State government.

Dr. Madubuko stressed that markets ought to have wide pathways to allow free flow of vehicles, also pedestrians’ paths for human traffic. He pointed out that markets are supposed to be the cleanest place, with proper drainage and waste disposal system, all these which will be a common feature in the new Awka market.

SEE ALSO: Commodity price as at this week
The commissioner revealed that the proposed new market would be rid of fraudsters, who collect revenue from traders and to enrich themselves; dupe and pickpockets, who deceive and steal from unsuspecting buyers.

The Commissioner therefore declared that in no distant time, Eke Awka Market must surely be decongested and rebuilt to reach modern standards because the state government is making efforts to give Ndi Anambra the best they deserved.
Thank you for posting all the information from the link.

Ok , the proposed market is to be sited at a different location but I am concerned about the current state of eke Awka and all these other condemnations by the Commissioner of individuals who build stalls indiscriminately in the market is nothing but shameful. What is the job of the Commissioner and the task force established by the state?

The state is crying over civilians who are breaking laws while they (government) do nothing about it. Obiano has been a governor for 6yrs plus yet nothing has been done about eke Awka. Motorist , petty traders , illegal stalls , hawkers etc have turned our state capital into a dumpster. It's a failure of Obiano government!
The market will be moved out 100% to the new site. Hopefully before this present administration winds up.

Where are the trees along our major roads and streets...this kills me!

I have like a million questions but I just want simple answers.
Thank you brother. This report is from 2018, work has been quietly going on at Isi-agu, a suburb of Awka where a more modern market is being developed. I am not very sure if this is the 3D or something. They will be moved here once it is completed.

ASBA COMMENDS OBI OF ONITSHA FOR EXEMPLARY PARTNERSHIP

By Ikenna Aniagboso

The Anambra Small Business Agency, ASBA, has presented a letter of commendation to the Obi of Onitsha, HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe (Agbogidi) for guaranteeing seven multi purpose co-operative societies for the ANSG/CBN micro, small and medium enterprises fund credit facility, amounting to N35,000,000.00 (thirty five million naira only).

The credit facility was issued by ASBA in 2016 to 70 youths from Onitsha who registered under the seven co-operative societies.

Presenting the letter to Igwe Achebe at his palace, Ime Obi, Onitsha, August 24, 2020, managing director of ASBA, Chief Clement Chukwuka eulogised the royal father for his profound benevolence and astounding integrity. He said that Igwe Achebe guaranteed the loan regardless of risks to his person and the throne.

"Igwe Achebe reposed total confidence in the youths and didn't worry about the possibility of a default in repayment of the facility. Rather he prioritized the empowerment of the youths and placed their needs first".

Continuing, Chief Chukwuka said that the royal father expressed no reservation in securing the loan for his subjects. "We only requested that he guarantee the loan but he gave us seven open cheques, one for each co-operative society, and signed all of them. Agbogidi also wrote an irrevocable letter of guarantee and registered same in the Onitsha high court. In other words, he gave us full authority to recover the money from him should any of the youths default.

"This is the kind of exemplary leadership that all traditional rulers and indeed everyone in leadership position in Anambra state should emulate. Agbogidi has proved himself a kind and benevolent King and his subjects, the youths of Onitsha has made us proud. I stand today to testify that they have not only repayed the loans but they are doing well in their chosen fields. They were trained in ICT, shoe making, metal fabrication, poultry, rice farming and other areas and they are now doing well as entrepreneurs. This is why we are here to appreciate Agbogidi and return the cheques and irrevocable letter of guarantee to him", he further stated.

Receiving the letter, HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe thanked the Governor of Anambra state, Chief Willie Obiano for creating an agency that supports MSMEs and provides funding for youth empowerment and entrepreneurship. The royal father equally thanked Chief Chukwuka and lauded the good works he is doing in ASBA.

Igwe Achebe expressed delight over the loan repaid by the 70 youths. He said that the trust he reposed in them was not in vain as they have made him and the entire Onitsha Ado na Idu proud. He blessed them and prayed that they will continue to excel in their endeavours.

Reacting, Chairman of Onitsha North LGA, Mr Patrick Agha MBA, thanked the MD of ASBA for showing appreciation to HRM Igwe Achebe. He noted that the gesture showed the sincerity of the agency and the genuine commitment of the Anambra state government under Chief Willie Obiano to truly empower the youths.

A beneficiary of the loan facility, Ms Nwozie Uchenna Frances expressed deep appreciation to HRM Igwe Achebe for staking his integrity to secure loans for Onitsha youths. She also thanked the Anambra state government for helping her realise her dreams.

According to her, "I am a cobbler today and I am proud to say that I produced the gladiator sandals used during Igwe Achebe's ofala festival in 2018 and 2019. I make good foot wears and my business is thriving, all thanks to Gov Obiano and ASBA".
