Sosoliso plane crash survivor, Kechi Okwuchi graduated with a First Class degree from University of Thomas Houston, Texas on May 16th, 2015. Not only that, she was inducted into 6 academic honor societies, was the most Outstanding student for her major in Economics and has already been accepted into graduate school for her MBA. She was also chosen to give the commencement address to the class of 2015 at her school. Ms. Okwuchi survived the ill-fated Portharcourt bound flight which crashed on the runway and killed 107 people, including her close friend who was sitting next to her and late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya. What makes her story so touching is the fact that she was one of only two survivors on that plane. She was a student of Loyola Jesuit College at the time, a boarding high school in Abuja and was on her way home for the holidays when the crash occured . She was once quoted to have said, “I remember just saying I don’t know, but I think we should pray or something, I don’t know. We actually never got a chance. That’s the last memory I have before I blacked out.” The next thing I knew, I was waking up in Milpark Hospital, South Africa. To this day I don’t remember the actual impact of the crash. Kechi has had more than 100 surgeries, including skin grafts in the US as a result of the severe burns which had all over her body. Doctors placed pins to support her hands but this didn’t stop her from reaching for greatness. www.etimes.com.ng |

Oil was discovered in Nguzu and Edda of the old Afikpo division now in Ebonyi state by the colonial government donkey years back .It was discovered in Eha Ndiagu,Isi Uzo,Uzo Uwani of the old Nsukka division as far back as 1965. Oil and gas was discovered in the old Awgu division.Akukwa field in the OPL 907 area at Ugwuoba,Oji River holds one of the largest gas deposits in the country.Six wells have so far been drilled in the block, including four shallow dry wells by Shell in 1938 – 1939, and two successful wells – Akukwa-1 and Akukwa-2, drilled by Shell/BP in 1955 and 1956 respectively. All these places are currently in Enugu state.I don't want to talk about coal and other mineral deposits. The oil in Anam, Aguleri in Anambra spreading to Uzo Uwani in Enugu was discovered almost same time.Chief Emeka Anyaoku,Dr Alex Ekwueme,Sir Cletus Ibeto and other Anambra men with political clout lobbied the federal government to grant their company;Orient Petroleum Plc the licence to explore oil there just a few years ago. That is how the oil wells and refinery around there were built. Oil deposits and exploration in Abia and Imo need not be mentioned as those two states are already in the Niger Delta Development Commission. The Eastern region government and prospecting oil companies considered the cost of exploring the oil and gas deposits onshore in the hinterlands higher than those of the riverine creeks of the Niger Delta. These "strategic reserves" remained untapped until the region was abolished by Col Gowon in May 1967 preempting Biafra. Then they carved all the developed oilfields into Rivers and Cross River states as it was called then and left none in the East Central state;the home state of the "rebels" leader. The federal government then confiscated the the ownership of oil deposits and every other minerals from the states after the war.If any firm want to explore oil, coal or any other essential mineral deposits, they will have to apply for licence from the FG.The proceeds from oil exploration goes to the FG. Then again, the FG created more states and LGAs and devised a revenue sharing formula that gives the FG 56%,states 24% and LGAs 20% of all revenues. Of the five states in the SE there are 95 LGAs but between just 3 out of 7 NW states of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa, there are 105 LGAs.Dont forget that revenue from oil is shared monthly between the FG,states and LGAs. I am trying to prove to you why a SE Development Commission would not help the region and it's long suffering people. What the region needs is to take back its wealth stolen and squandered by the federal government since 1970. Take back the power to grant oil, coal and other minerals exploration licenses from the federal government and reject SEDC and other bribes. Demand a constitutional restructuring that would make FG return the powers they stole from the region/states. You cannot have "strategic reserves" of oil in Ebonyi,Enugu that is losing value everyday and partially explored reserves in Anambra,Abia and Imo while the FG has "spent about $340 million and additional N27 billion" looking for oil in the North. This is just one example using oil. This political structure was deliberately designed to keep all of us down.Demand your freedom by demanding a constitutional restructuring of Nigeria and not a development commission. www.etimes.com.ng/south-east-development-will-ruse/ |

The Big Brother Naija has come and gone, but we haven’t heard enough of the participants of the show. After Efe, the winner has been announced, Nigerians were of the opinion that other participants have gone into oblivion or hibernation, where the come from. eTimes News can categorically tell you that some of them have been busy lately. One of the busy participants, known as Bisola in a chat with “Rubbin Minds” anchor, Obika Obu Uchendu, Bisola of the BigBrother Naija fame confesses that the show has given her a larger platform. Known for her whirlwind romance with Tall Tony, not noticing that he is married (nobody would have noticed anyway, due to the conditions that were imposed on them) , in the show Bisola was appreciative of the BigBrother Naija platform. She confessed that her followership on social media has tripled. In her words “before I came into the house, I used to have about 40,000 followers, but as it stands today, I just cannot name how many followers I have… I owe this to the Big Brother Naija” she also made her fans to understand that she doesn’t regret her actions in the house. Though, a very talented individual, she admitted that she believed that Tony and Efe will make it to the last rounds. In a house full of talented individuals, Bisola confessed that she saw Efe as the biggest threat in the house. When asked about her relationship with Tony and how she felt, she said that she is cool with him, though a bit hurt, but has moved on. Bisola had an up, close and personal with Tony, not knowing that he is a married man with kids. In her word, “Tony is a talented man, who I found interesting, he does task easily and there are no ill feelings between us. It was a game and I will not want to come in between his family. He has apologized for his acts and I have accepted” she admitted. Bisola confessed that she has a lot of things in her sleeves and will not fail to keep her fans and admirers informed. In the area of her career, a recording and management deal has been signed with Temple Records. Being in the studio for recording some time , this will enable the reality TV show to be relevant in the industry by releasing an album. Bisola is a single mother and she understands the limitation that being a mother and unmarried imposes on her and any single woman in the areas of careers aspiration. When quizzed about her situation as a single mother, she said that, “ I understand the limitations the society puts on women that have children out of wedlock. I have my mum to thank for her supportive role she has been playing” she remarked. http://etimes.com.ng/bisola-big-brother-naija-fame-single-motherhood-realtionship-tony/

How Barcelona ace Messi reacted to Real Madrid's Ronaldo winning Champions League - report BARCELONA star Lionel Messi privately has the utmost respect for Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo after the La Liga winners added the Champions League to their collection last night, reports claim. Real Madrid won the Champions League for the 12th time after a 4-1 win over Juventus in Cardiff. Cristiano Ronaldo rose to the occasion majestically, scoring twice with Casemiro and Marco Asensio also getting in on the act. It means that Zinedine Zidane's side have now completed a league and European double, for the first time since the 1950s. Barcelona, while not finishing the season empty-handed, have ended up just winning the Copa del Rey. And Spanish outlet Diario Gol say that Messi has the utmost respect for Barcelona's fiercest rivals after they won the prize. Real Madrid's Champions League player ratings against Express Sport brings you Real Madrid's player ratings from the Champions League final against Juventus Barcelona star Lionel Messi thinks Real Madrid deserved to win the Champions League It is said that the Argentina international now recognises that Ronaldo is favourite to win the 2017 Ballon d'Or. The two players have long contested the game's ultimate individual gong, with Kaka the last player outside of the two superstars to win it back in 2007. Messi also feels that Real have been superb throughout the campaign and manager Zidane has overcome obstacles aplenty on his way to winning the trophy for the second time in as many years. The 29-year-old supposedly thinks that Barcelona have been their own worst enemy, dropping points against the lower teams and leaving themselves too much to do in the process. Real Madrid Barcelona Cristiano Ronaldo Lionel. Barcelona star Lionel Messi thinks Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo deserved to win the trophy As a result, Messi thinks Ronaldo is worthy of beating him to the honour of winning the Champions League four times throughout his career. The former Manchester United star has added this year's triumph to winners medals achieved in 2008, 2014 and 2016. Real have become the first team to retain the trophy in its modern format. And it seemed only fitting that Ronaldo played a starring role, with the 32-year-old narrowly missing out on achieving the same feat during his time with United. The presidency has dismissed as smear campaign, allegations of nepotism and favouritism against Acting President Yemi Osinbajo. The presidency was reacting to an article by one Dr. Ismaila Farouk, who cited the composition of the Presidential Advisory and Competitiveness Council, and key appointments like the chief executive officers of Bank of Industry and Pension Commission. The article had also accused Osinbajo of ensuring that all his aides were either Yoruba or members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. It compared him with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who he said appointed his aides from other parts of the country. Osinbajo was specifically accused of appointing Yoruba men, Mr. Funso Doherty as the Director-General of Pension Commission (PenCom), and Mr. Olukayode Pitan as Managing Director of Bank of Industry. He was accused of appointing his brother in law, Mr. Olusegun Awolowo, who is the Executive Director/CEO, Nigerian Export Promotion Council, into the Presidential Advisory and Competitiveness Council. The Acting President was also accused of appointing his deputy when he was the Pastor of RCCG, Banana Island, Lagos, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, who is minister of Trade, as the Vice Chairman of the Presidential Advisory and Competitiveness Council which he inaugurated in the Presidential Villa last Monday. While further accusing him of strategising for 2019 with the hope that Buhari would be unable to contest, the article accused Osinbajo of filling the advisory council with either his kinsmen in the South-west or members of RCCG. On the appointment of the Director-General of PenCom, a presidency source told Thisday that “There has been much talk about failure of government to replace the former Pencom Director General with someone from the same zone as hers. It is argued that this ran contrary to Section 21(2) of the Pension Reform Act 2014. However, that section only applies ‘in the event of a vacancy.’ “Indeed, in that case, the President shall appoint a replacement from the same geo-political zone of the immediate past member who vacated the office to complete the remaining tenure. This is to ensure that no geo-political zone loses out in the event of a removal and replacement of one particular member, when others from other zones remain in office. “However, where as in this case, the entire Board is dissolved and reconstituted, the question is not about replacement of any particular person from any particular geo-political zone. Rather, it is to ensure that in the newly reconstituted Board, every one of the six political zones is represented. The new appointees, covering all zones, are as follows: Ali Usman Ahmed (North East)- Chairman; Funso Doherty (South West) -Director General, Manasseh Terna Denga (North Central) -Commissioner; Abubakar Zaki Magawata (North West) – Commissioner; Ben Oviosu (South South) -Commissioner and Nyerere Ayim (South East) – Commissioner. “Unfortunately, another controversy arose, following the slight alteration in the list earlier announced. The nominees have not taken office. So, thankfully, it is not a matter of vacancy this time. But why this alteration anyway? “Unfortunately, the earlier announced appointment of Abdulrahman Dikko was found to be in error, as it ran contrary to Section 19 (5) of PRA 2014 which says that ‘the chairman and members of the PenCom Board shall not own controlling shares in any of the pension funds administrator or pension funds custodian prior to or during their tenure of office as chairman or members of the board.’ “It is not disputed that Dikko is currently a majority shareholder at Premium Pension Limited, one of the most prominent pension funds administrators in Nigeria today, hence the need to immediately rectify the error by moving him to a position for which he is clearly qualified. Dikko is now the appointed Chairman of the Bank of Industry Board”. On the allegation that the acting president was strategising for 2019, the presidential source said politicking had never been a matter for contemplation by the vice-president, pointing out that he reluctantly accepted the offer to be vice-president, a reason which explains why he has never bothered to use his office to build a political structure for himself in his South-west zone. On Enelamah, the source said contrary to the claim that Osinbajo brought the Minister of Trade and Investment into the government, the minister was actually nominated by the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Abba Kyari, whom he said had worked with Enelamah in the course of his private business before the advent of Buhari’s administration. He also dismissed the allegation that the newly constituted advisory council was filled with Yoruba and RCCG members, explaining that Enelamah only became vice-chairman of the council by virtue of his office as Minister of Trade and Investment. Presidency replies allegation that Osinbajo appoints Yorubas, RCCG members The source dismissed the allegation that the acting president travels to the South-west to attend his church with a retinue of his aides. He described it as a blatant lie, disclosing that the acting president funds his trips that have to do with visits to his church and Redemption Camp Wale Odunsi http://etimes.com.ng/presidency-replies-allegation-osinbajo-appoints-yorubas-rccg-members/ |

The Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for Innovations and Development (PRESSID) an avenue where bright Nigerians can be sponsored on a scholarship programme overseas has been stopped due to paucity of funds. The development is linked to the dearth of funds to run the project which was initiated by the immediate past administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. This singular action has made Nigeria a laughing stock among the comity of nations. As it was reported on Channels TV ,many Nigerians that were/are on this programme are confused on what next to do. In a nutshell, Nigerians studying overseas are stranded and in a quagmire. One of the major ways for a country to leave the poverty and under development space is via human capacity and skills development. Education is the key! Many countries of the world like Sweden, Norway and China have taken education serious. Chinese developed via the impact of returnee Chinese that acquired western education , same with many other countries like India and probably UAE. These countries achieved these by bringing the experiences and knowledge of these foreign educated nationals home. Nigeria seems to be looking down on education and looking up on crude oil, which the country has no capacity to refine or add value . This is as a result of capacity building. According to the report and interview on Channel TV programme , Saturday morning rise . Mr.Chinedu who is one of the recipients of scholarship programme has been stranded in the United Kingdom. Studying in one of the prestigious universities, Cambridge. He has been unable to meet his financial and academic obligations due to paucity of funds. Having written the Nigerian embassy in UK, the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant bodies to come to their aid, which up till the time of this report has been futile. In the words of Chinedu ” we have written to all relevant bodies and we have been rendered incummunicado, I have taken a train from Cambridge to London ,where the Nigerian embassy is and delivered a letter to them. It cost me about £20 and this is coming from a man that hasn’t been giving allowance ” he continued and said that , the school authority is finding this situation disturbing and this will affect his education . ” I am meant to conclude my academic programme by October next year, by this November, I am meant to be done with my practicals. With the situation on ground, I don’t see this possible ” , he added. This is also the situation many Nigerian nationals face out there. With the dwindling fortunes of the country, coming at a time the recession and low oil prices have seen a once buoyant country on her knees. This situation has affected the oversea sponsorship of education. About six percent of the national budget is been spent on education, which is a far cry from the stipulated amount by World Bank and UNESCO . In the 2017 budget proposals presented by President Muhammadu Buhari, N448.01billion was allocated to education, representing about 6 percent of the N7.30 trillion budget, contrary to the recommendation by UNESCO. UNESCO stipulated about 26 percent of the budget must be earmarked for education . The CIA World Factbook report affirmed this, registering Lesotho as having the highest percentage of relative educational expenditures (13% of GDP) which was the highest of all countries. This indicated a slight increase in the government’s relative expenditures on education from recent years. This is followed by Ghana. Government spending on education is a huge investment in human potential that enhances the future of the country. This is the only way any country can be developed. Hopefully, as the economy is gaining momentum, the country’s budget on education will increase. Investment in human capacity building is non negotiable. http://etimes.com.ng/nigerians-stranded-foreign-universities-due-paucity-funds/

Dressed in smelly rags and torn clothes, he danced round and round the small fire made at the sharp little corner of the road. Okaka was once a fine intelligentsia, a man of enchanting words and enthralling letters and all round beautiful soul until one fateful day he came out of his bathroom —- mad. Completely deranged. Began to speak lots of isms and incoherent jargons and had to be remanded into a psychiatric ward, as the tears flowed like raindrops from his mother’s eye. Some people said he had previously indulged in having carnal knowledge of a virgin, an information everyone knew about in the village, one of the girls who was attracted to his sweet camaraderie and befriended him. He took her forcefully that night against her will and she cursed him with the blood coming from her ‘preciousness’ which explains his present predicament. Retribution in one word. His own karma came too early. Others said before he was born, Oshimiri, the village seer have advised his mother not to cut the dreadlocks on his head. The missionaries soon came and brainwashed everybody. The locks were gone and his sanity too. There be many questions than answers. His mother died afterwards mysteriously from a strange illness. People spoke about that family in hushed tones and silent whisper. But nothing bothered Okaka, the mad man. He is often seen talking and laughing to himself. His special type of madness allows him to call people by their name. The clarity of mind when he greeted passersby make people wonder if truly this boy was dementedly challenged. Due to his gentle mien and calm temerity, little children often came by to taunt him. “Okaka cannot do anything to us” The boy with the swollen tummy said to his friends as they approached him. “Let us flog him today…” the one on torn stripped shirt suggested and they all agreed. As usual Okaka was singing melodiously like sounds from a broken gramophone. His eyes glistened and shone like a million stars when he sang. His happiness seeped through to the earth like an hourglass… “Who know they see,go hear… Who know they hear, go see”… He sang aloud and his voice reverberated like thunder shattering the stillness of the cool evening, his loud voice could be heard by all and sundry. What makes a mad man unique is his unpredictability. Okaka was as unpredictable as the Nigerian dream. Okaka was astonished and stupefied at the loud fiam sound that kissed the small of his back setting him ablaze with unbridled pain. As the stick connected with bare flesh, he screamed out in pain. The boy with swollen tummy have just landed a neat stroke of the cane on his bare flesh as it tore neatly to reveal creamy, red liquid. Blood. Red blood. Okaka gazed at them and in a twinkling of an eye began to sing his infamous song which seem to make sense to only one man. Himself. “Who know they see, go hear… Who know they hear go see… Who know go see, go hear… Who know they hear go see…” A small crowd was beginning to gather at this point as the boys laughed heartily at the response of the mad man. One of the boys reached for the Iron in the bag of the mad man. That iron was more than just a tool for the madman. He spoke to it. He worshipped it. They communed together. One mad man and his god none must separate. “Give that back” Okaka cried. “Who know they see go hear, who know they hear go see…” He sang and began to dance near his small fire. The boys ran away with his Iron and chattered gleefully as they dispersed. Okaka, picked up his container and made for the house of the one with his iron: http//etimes.com.ng/bum-bum-stories-mad-man-onyeka-chiemelie/
