A minor who showed up at the Kofar Pada polling unit in front of the Emir palace in Keffi, Nasarawa State, stirred up a heated argument between agents of political parties participating in today’s governorship and state assembly elections, leading to scuffles. The boy of about 12 whose name Daily Trust decided not to mention, divided opinion among agents of the PDP, APC, and APGA as well as Accord party, Shehu Kassim Yamusa, Auwal Shauibu,, Monday Yohanna, and Yusuf Shuaibu, respectively, leading to a shouting match before security personnel, polling officers, and a European observers team. Some insisted the under-aged voter, who presented a valid PVC for accreditation be allowed to perform his civic duty at that age because he has been so registered by INEC, while others insisted he must not be allowed because doing so contravenes the provisions of the law on age of voters. The argument lasted over 20 minutes, with agents even engaging themselves in a scuffle that took a combined team of policemen and other security agencies to separate them. All of these happened before a team of European Observers, which was led by Dirk Veheyen, and Joelle Meganck. The foreigner observers interviewed the little boy, and took down his data, but declined to speak officially to our correspondent. Meanwhile, the Presiding Officer in charge of the polling unit, Miss Rashidat Momoh told Daily Trust that the unit was not going to accredit the minor, although would- be voters at the unit told their correspondent that the boy voted on March 28, in the first round of elections. The unit’s senior policeman, Insp. Alibade Charles confirmed the incident. http://www.lailasblog.com/2015/04/underage-voter-causes-fight-among-party.html

Jos - The Commissioner for Education in Plateau, Mr Paul Wai, on Friday, warned that any school caught in examination malpractice in the state would be blacklisted. The commissioner gave the warning while inspecting WAEC centres in Jos, saying the state had zero tolerance for such acts. Wai, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Secondary Education, Mrs Ruth Biangten, told newsmen during the inspection that the state had no tolerance for anything that would lower its standard of education. The commissioner, who frowned at examination malpractice, said it had a long time stain on the perpetrators and the society if not tackled immediately. "Malpractice has destroyed the future of many bright students in higher institutions as they find it difficult to cope with their academics after gaining admission with such unmerited results," he said. He, however, expressed satisfaction with the sanitary condition of schools visited and the arrangement of the WAEC examination halls there. He said an organised environment helped in minimising examination fraud, unlike in years past where halls were congested and very noisy during examinations. Wai applauded the examination council for providing sufficient examination materials and for ensuring that the examination was concluded fairly. - NAN

TY Danjuma
|
No matter how flawed he was or even if they don’t agree with his decisions, Igbos don’t joke around with the legacy of Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu… they simply don’t. A couple of days ago, while playing host to President Goodluck Jonathan, former Chief of Army Staff, General TY Danjuma (retd.) committed a huge blunder, by chastising Ojukwu, the late Igbo leader and Biafran warlord. Danjuma goofed by saying that if Ojukwu had conceded defeat after Enugu fell to the Nigerian army like Jonathan conceded defeat to Muhammadu Buhari, the civil war could have been averted. At a time when the Igbos were still upset over the threatening comments of the Oba of Lagos, it was a no-brainer that a backlash would precede Danjuma’s comments. And now they have started trickling in- from different Igbo leaders: The first four persons to react to Danjuma’s utterances are; former Secretary-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo and officer in the Biafran Army, Col Joe Achuzia; Second Republic Politician, Chief Guy Ikokwu; botched Third Republic Governor of Anambra State, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife and former Deputy National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chief Abia Onyike. Ezeife’s response was rather brief. He said: “I know Danjuma is not very well. So I am not surprised.” Ikokwu on his part, claimed that Danjuma killed Nigeria’s first military Head of State, General Ajuiyi Ironsi (an Igbo), stating that he will get a full response after the elections because by talking about Ojukwu, he is talking about the South-East and South-South geo-political zones, which constituted most of the former Eastern Region and later the defunct Biafra. He said: “I don’t think we should take issues with Danjuma until after the elections. Jonathan went to him and not him to Jonathan. We shall respond to him.” Meanwhile, Col Joe Achuzia said: “I am happy that my friend Danjuma owned up that there was bloodshed and pogrom against the people of Biafra. I don’t understand what he meant by Ojukwu conceding defeat. If the Federal Government had implemented the Aburi Accord, the bloodshed would have been avoided.” “Ojukwu believed in Aburi as the road map for peace at the time of the crisis but the Federal Government reneged on the agreement reached in Ghana. One does not concede defeat half way into a battle. Doing that would have amounted to cowardice. I don’t know where Danjuma got the idea of Ojukwu not accepting defeat from. He has little knowledge of the intricacies of the war. He didn’t even know the terrain of the Enugu that he talked about.” “If the necessities of capitulating were there, why did the war last for three years? I fought the war for three years and I know that the necessities were not there. Sometimes people talk for talking sake. The President’s visit to him was a private one and he should not have used that opportunity to insult all that Ojukwu stood for. To say publicly that the President was defeated was even a mockery of the President.” “It does not portray the President in good light. Of course what he said was an insult on Ojukwu. His reference to the fall of Enugu is laughable because the war was just starting then. Which military officer will surrender in that kind of situation even before firing a bullet? When some people make wrong comments on the civil war, I wonder what often inform their judgement. Ojukwu was a General and was right on all the decisions he took in the interest of the Igbo.” Onyike shared the others’ sentiments, saying: “In the first place, it was Danjuma that backed the spilling of the blood of the Igbo, with the killing of Aguiyi Ironsi in Ibadan in 1967 and we want to say that Danjuma belongs to the group of Army Officers who led the gruesome genocide and massacre of over three million Igbo during the Nigerian civil war.” “We want to say that the problem with General T.Y. Danjuma is mainly psychological because at a time when some of them felt that they had become great statesmen and patriots for presiding over the attempted extermination of the Igbo, unfortunately for them, the Igbo people survived and have come to assert themselves and their identity in the Nigerian federation.” “Secondly, a twist emerged in the Nigerian scene where people like Danjuma and the minority group where he comes from in the Northern have been subjected to the same gruesome murders by militant elements of the same northern oligarchy which they serve, and to that extent Danjuma cannot go to his village.” “So, let him go and resolve that problem 0 because when Ojukwu was making them understand the nature of the Nigerian federation and the dangers inherent in the politics that was emerging, Danjuma preferred to be a surrogate. So I felt he should stop using the Igbo to hide his inadequacies.” |

A flier titled: ‘The evils of the broom government against Ndigbo in Lagos state’ has been circulating over social media for the past few hours. The flier- which was made by proponents of the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos, Jimi Agbaje, - seeks to create division and enmity between the Igbos and Yorubas in the state. Agbaje has been on the receiving end of a lot of criticism since the flier surfaced, it is, however, not clear if he was aware of its creation or not. See flier below:

Governor Kwankwaso
|
Kano - Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano, has applauded President Goodluck Jonathan for his magnanimity by conceding defeat to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in the March 28 Presidential Election. The governor commended Jonathan on Sunday while briefing newsmen in Kano, on the outcome of the last Presidential and National Assembly Elections in the country. “I want to commend the President’s action in conceding defeat. This shows that President Jonathan is a true statesman,” he said. The governor, who also congratulated Buhari on his victory, attributed the success of the election to the determination of Nigerians to have a change in leadership. Kwakwanso assured Nigerians that Buhari would run a transparent government. He said the new administration would fight corruption and provide maximum security to citizens of the country. Kwankwaso then urged the President-elect, to live up to his campaign promises to justify the confidence reposed in him. - NAN |

A builder was stunned when he spotted Jesus Christ on a plank of wood just a few days before Easter. Paddy Morrall noticed the full-length Christ on a snapped scaffolding board in Scotland. The image appeared after they cut the wood and left it out for a while. He told reporters: ‘We didn’t take it too seriously but it really did look like him. We thought it was a bit crazy. It’s the first time I’ve seen anything like this. I’m not a normally a religious guy but it is Easter. We all thought it was pretty mad.’
