A federal court in Abuja has freed Aminu Oguche, the suspected mastermind of the Nyanya bomb attack in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria has reported. The court struck out a two-count terrorism charge against Mr. Ogwuche on Monday, after months of trial for the April 2014 attack which killed more than 70 people. The court hinged its decision on lack of diligent prosecution by the state. Mr. Ogwuche, a suspected Boko Haram member, was accused by the Nigerian government of being behind the attack. The blast at the Nyanya Motor Park occurred during morning peak hours as residents were hurrying to work. The government said Mr. Ogwuche fled to Sudan after coordinating the attack. He was later repatriated to Nigeria to face charges. Details of Monday’s ruling are sketchy and will be brought in our subsequent updates. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/171794-breaking-court-frees-alleged-nyanya-bomber.html |
T he Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA) has described has unfair and a total falsehood the news report in some media that the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki has ordered the arrest of Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal at a meeting with Vice President Namadi Sambo and Inspector General of Police Suleman Abba. Sambo Dasuki, National Security Adviser The Director Special Duties in the Office of National Security Adviser, retired Colonel Bello Fadile described the reports and rumours as untrue and total falsehood. Colonel Fadile said: “It is not only untrue and mere fabricated reports that the NSA met with the VP and ordered the arrest of Hon Tambuwal. The fact is that the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki has been outside the country since Wednesday on pressing national security issues. “To the best of our knowledge there is no any order for the arrest of Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of the House of Representatives. "We therefore urge the media to always cross- check their stories before going to the press.” Meanwhile the Spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, DCP Emmanuel Ojukwu has also denied the report for any such arrest. He nevertheless added that: “It lies with the investigators to determine who should be quizzed and/or prosecuted, as the case may be for criminal acts.” http://saharareporters.com/2014/11/22/no-order-arrest-tambuwal-nsa |

Hamza Al-Mustapha, an army major and former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, Sani Abacha, recently floated a non-governmental organisation, Al-Mustapha Unity and Development Initiative. In this interview with PREMIUM TIMES, he speaks on the mission of the organisation and its source of funding as well as life after 15 years in detention, his plan to return to the military, and the allegation by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that Mr. Al-Mustapha was heading a killer squad for President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2015 general elections. PT: What have you been doing since you returned from detention? Al-Mustapha : We were deliberately disconnected from the society that we have been with for many years before having served Nigeria, from my commission to my arrest in 1998. So from 1998 to 2013 is a long period. So, for 15 years that you’ve been kept out of the society you are desirous of serving and you believe you owe a lot. It is only normal that we continue to have a reconnect as a directive from within our own programmes from the north to the south. We have built a lot of goodwill in the years past and it is only normal that we see ourselves going around for a reconnect. PT: What is your impression of the recent ceasefire agreement between the FG and the Boko Haram? Al-Mustapha : Where there are any operations those who are deep into it are the ones that are actually aware of the nitty-gritty involved. So, if out of the surface or I don’t know about the conception to the present state, it will be foolish for me to be commenting on it. I prefer not to talk if I’m ignorant of some topics, rather I am confident to discuss or talk or contribute on any matter that I am familiar with and I am aware of. PT: How would you respond to the allegation by former President Obasanjo that you are heading a killer squad for President Jonathan? Al-Mustapha : I have replied him that it is most unfortunate. That is what I said. And for him to have come up with that I’m sure he has no fact, he has no figures, and he has nothing to say other than what he has done. If he’s angry that God has granted us freedom, that’s another thing entirely. But to give such an allegation, weighty as it is in the eyes of the law, certainly that is a fundamental issue that cannot be brushed aside. I challenge him to an open a debate as a direct reply. When he made that allegation in writing to the president I was not in Nigeria. I was in India treating the injuries he infected on me courtesy of torture that he arranged on me since 15 years. And while I was on hospital bed the information came that a letter was written on such an allegation. It’s most unfortunate. I wish being a statesman, a former head of state (and) a former senior military officer he should be able to summon me, even to Otta. I’m ready to go anywhere he wishes to discuss such issues. But I was not and I am not to be counted among those who have ill feelings against Nigeria. Rather we are bridge builders; we are peace building machine and we believe in peaceful coexistence of Nigeria. It is the mission before us. So it was so it is. We will not deviate from that. PT: You’ve forgiven him? Al-Mustapha : Of course, I have. Every other person, even out of mischief, requires forgiveness. It is strength to he that has forgiven and it a lesson to he that initiated mischief. Mischief cannot and will not have a sustained result no matter who, where and when. PT: What are your views about the presidential ambition of some prominent northerners like Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar? Al-Mustapha : I am not a political party card- carrying member. So I cannot comment on that. I’m watching the way you, as a citizen, is watching. We will keep watching. So, the interest and desire of whatsoever as provided by the law to provide leadership to Nigeria is therefore for anybody to exercise. You can aspire to contest for presidency tomorrow and we look forward with delight where young men will take up a challenge. Give it a shot, try, if you can, as enshrined in the law. While they are contesting we are also looking particularly for younger ones to do so and to provide leadership to Nigerians. PT: What is your take on the entry of late Head of State, Sani Abacha’s son into the governorship race in Kano State? Al-Mustapha : He is desirous of becoming an aspirant. Mohammed Abacha is my younger brother and where he has an interest, surely I will also have an interest there. I don’t think he’s the one contesting I’m the one pushing him to contest. PT: Are you supporting President Goodluck Jonathan? Al-Mustapha : The president is the president and commander-in-chief and as a commander-in- chief, he is the commander-in-chief to the military and that is where I belong. PT: Are you still in service? Al-Mustapha : My matter will come up at the Supreme Court and once it finishes everything will be formally regularized and it will be one. I’m in court. PT: Right now you are not in the military? Al-Mustapha : I’m in Supreme Court. You will hear the outcome because it will be made public. PT: You have an NGO called Al-Mustapha Unity and Development Initiative. Who is funding it? Al-Mustapha : Well-wishers and many of my friends in and out of Nigeria! We are committed to peace building assignment in our hands and we believe we will add colours and make the difference in Nigeria. We want a very peaceful Nigeria. For many things to come, it will. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/171182-alleged-jonathans-election-killer-squad-al-mustapha-replies-obasanjo.html |
ITSEKIRIS in Delta state have accused President Goodluck Jonathan of encouraging Ijaw agenda to exterminate them following the violent threats from Ijaws of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South West Area of Delta state which aborted the Tuesday’s scheduled groundbreaking ceremony for the $16bn Ogidigben EPZ project by the President. President Goodluck Jonathan In a briefing yesterday in Warri by Itsekiri Leaders of Thought, the ethnic group in Delta said they were ready to approach the United Nations to seek secession and opt for protection under the United Kingdom or United States in line with treaties signed with these foreign powers long before Nigeria’s independence which they claim have not been abrogated. The decision read by Secretary to the ILT, Edward Ekpoko noted, “Itsekiri and other well meaning Nigerians are surprised at the failure of President Goodluck Jonathan to commission the groundbreaking for the EPZ at Ogidigben, Ugborodo in Warri South West Local Government area due to threats of Ijaw militants mostly of Gbaramatu kingdom. “The EPZ is completely cited in Ogidigben, an Itsekiri town. The closest Ijaw enclave lying to the South, Yokiri, is about 14km from Ogidigben. The other town to the North is Kpokpo. This Kpokpo has no geographical contiguity with Ogidigben.’’. Pa J. O.S Ayomike, Chairman of the ILT, in their remarks said various court injunctions by courts of competent jurisdiction held on the land ownership tussle in the area support the fact that the entire land space currently occupied by the Ijaw of Gbaramatu is owned by Itsekiris of Ugborodo. “President Jonathan’s refusal to perform the groundbreaking ceremony of the project as fixed for Friday was a show of cowardice unexpected of his office which should stand for the rule of law. He has shown that he has joined the Ijaw militants in building fences among the ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta and Nigeria. “Jonathan should know that Itsekiri the world over will go to the UN to request for secession if Jonathan and Ijaw want to pursue the extermination of the Itsekiri people. We will ask for the protection of the Britain and USA and the United Nations”, Ayomike, an octogenarian screamed. Ekpoko added that, “Jonathan is pursuing an Ijaw agenda. We will resist it and will never be intimidated by threats of war and genocide against the Itsekiri.” The Itsekiri leaders also took a swipe at Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, calling him to resign as Governor following his failed boast that nobody can stop Jonathan from coming for the EPZ groundbreaking. Ayomike said, “Jonathan has been stopped by the Ijaw. They have belittled Uduaghan . Uduaghan boasted that he was governor and that nobody could stop the president from coming. Now that his boasting did not yield any result, he should resign like President Nixon did. “Jonathan has been intimidated by the militants, and the Ijaws have grown in fame and importance so they can control everything, including the president of Nigeria.’’. Meanwhile, the Ijaws of Gbaramatu speaking through Paul Bebenimibo have maintained their position to see that the EPZ never materialises until Gbaramatu stakes are as defineds. Bebenimibo in a phone reaction yesterday said, “Gbaramatu Ijaws are not at war with their Itsekiri neighbors. Our leaders are simply saying what is good for the goose is good for the gander. We own a large proportion of the EPZ. We do not deserve to be shut out. Equity is the password to a successful EPZ. Equity begets peace. You cannot talk peace in the atmosphere of injustice and oppression.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/protest-delta-epz-groundbreaking-ceremony-itsekiri-accuse-jonathan-ethnic-bigotry/ |
T he hopes of thousands of women mobilized for the flag-off of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in Bayelsa state by Nigeria’s first lady, Patience Jonathan, were dashed as they were sent home with nothing yesterday after policemen tear gassed a couple of them. Some overzealous security operatives also used batons on the hapless women who were frustrated for being hoodwinked by Mrs. Jonathan to come for the "empowerment program" she had claimed was from the MDG, only to be confronted with a political rally for the president’s re-election. One of the bags of Rice with expired Rice Photo Credit: Sahara Reporters Media One woman who could not hold her frustration and anger, Preye Dressman, said the whole thing was deceitful. "We came from our communities since 5 a.m.; I have not eaten and stayed under sun and rain, and now they are sending us home with empty hands.” A motorist, Stella Honesty, wondered why the President’s wife was coming to give Bayelsa women empowerment items to the people this late in her husband’s tenure. She said, “Is it because general elections are around the corner? In fact, if I were some people, I will reject any empowerment. Where was she all this while? Some of us have refused to be deceived by this political gimmick. Look at the kind of suffering one is going through because she is coming. Must she create tension each time she visits anywhere? I have been trapped in this traffic logjam for a long time for a journey that would not have been more than 30 minutes.” Commuters and motorists who were trapped in the gridlock created by the visit were seen struggling to make detours. 1 / 18 Expired rice 2 / 18 3 / 18 Expired Rice rebagged with president Goodluck Jonathan campaign bags PHOTONEWS: Patience Jonathan Distributes Expired Rice, Teargass Bayelsa Women In MDG Scam The MDGs, a United Nations benchmark which is aimed at eradicating extreme poverty and hunger for all citizens, became the basis for a political campaign ground for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), a political group affiliated with President Jonathan’s re-election. Several bags of rice repackaged in bags branded with Mr. Jonathan’s photos, sewing machines, hair dryers, and tricycles known also “Keke NAPEP” were distributed to some at the rally. However, several of the women left empty-handed. A cursory investigation showed that most of the items, especially food items, had expired, and most them were later diverted to Peoples Democratic Party politicians for onward distribution exclusively to their followers. Mrs. Jonathan, who was formerly a civil servant in the state, resigned a few weeks ago even though she had never shown up for a single day of work before and after Governor Seriake Dickson promoted her to the position of permanent secretary. http://saharareporters.com/2014/11/14/how-patience-jonathan-hoodwinked-bayelsa-women-expired-rice |

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has deplored moves by the state government to create doubts about his citizenship of the state. In a statement on Wednesday, the El-Rufai Campaign Organisation, said rather than face serious issues of governance confronting it, the Peoples Democratic Party-led government and its rulers had desperately gone comical by focusing on his roots. The organisation, in the statement by its Director of Media, Mohammed Soba, said it recalled that the government spent last weekend accusing Mr. El-Rufai, a former Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, of funding one of the PDP governorship aspirants in the state and now followed it up by assuming the temerity and authority to decide his identity for him. It said, “Having been stung by his critique of their poor performance in Kaduna State, they decided on a ridiculous way to stem the negative assessments: simply declare El-Rufai a non- indigene of Kaduna State in the vain hope to thereby nullify the criticism. And pronto, the PDP simply decreed that El-Rufai is from Katsina State.” Stating though that it would “not dignify their backwardness save to set the record straight,” the organisation, however, explained that Mr. El- Rufai was born in the ancient city of Zaria and therefore an indigene of the state. It said, “Malam Nasir El-Rufai was born to Malam Ahmad Rufai, from Zaria. His oldest brother, Air Vice Marshall Ali Rufai (rtd), enlisted in the Nigerian armed forces as an indigene of Zaria. Another older brother, Bashir El-Rufai, had a long career in the federal public service as an indigene of Kaduna State. “All three El-Rufai brothers are listed in the Who is Who of Zazzau Emirate, a compendium of renowned sons and daughters of Zaria. Alhaji Nuhu Bamalli, the first Zaria indigene to be appointed a federal minister, was an uncle to El- Rufai’s father, and was a well-respected Magajin Garin Zazzau.” The organisation also noted that when Mr. El- Rufai served as the Director General of the BPE and as Minister of the FCT, there was no question of his status as a Kaduna man. It explained that prior to joining the public service, the governorship aspirant had established his fledgling Quantity Surveying firm in Kaduna since 1982, after completing primary, secondary and university education within the state. It said now that his bid to serve as Kaduna governor is gathering momentum, they shame themselves anew. “They are exposing themselves badly enough as masters of division, pettiness and falsehood,” the campaign organisation said. “They are well-known as specialists in separating people along faultlines, be they ethnic, religious and regional, and they are unrelenting in setting so-called settlers against indigenes. “A spectre is obviously haunting them, and they are running from pillar to post. But their daydream will deliver nothing, for comedy never trumps reality.” The organisation also said Mr. El-Rufai would be offering a positive alternative to the people of Kaduna State and that the people found him credible because he is a man that has made a success of every public office he has held. It stated that the aspirant is engaging with and mobilising the people of Kaduna State for a mighty effort of change, stressing, “That is a most worthy focus.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/171096-kaduna-2015-desperate-pdp-goes-comical-el-rufai-says.html |
Following a petition submitted to the International Criminal Court (ICC) demanding a thorough investigation of former Borno State governor Ali Modu Sheriff and retired Nigerian Army Chief of Staff Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika, the ICC has confirmed they will review the petition and other supporting documents, which claim the pair were affiliated with the terrorist sect Boko Haram. International Criminal Court Photo Credit: Alamy In August, Sheriff and Ihejirika were accused of sponsoring Boko Haram by an Australian hostage negotiator, Stephen Davis, who claimed to have been working with the Nigerian federal government to negotiate a release of the kidnapped Chibok girls. In September, the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), a non-governmental organization whose mandate is to promote and protect human rights, petitioned the ICC to act on Davis' revelations, asserting that the Nigerian government lacked the "political will" to intervene against high-profile suspects like Sheriff and Ihejirika. "With your public admittance of Boko Haram's activities as qualifying for crimes against humanity, we shall not bother with further legal points to qualify these atrocities under the Rome Statute," HEDA chairman Olanrewaju Suraju said. "It is also instructive to assert that the Nigerian government, under the current leadership lacks the political will and judicial independence to prosecute the individuals who are friends and former subordinates of the President." "We hereby urge the ICC to urgently open immediate examination of this development by inviting Rev. Stephen Davis to provide insight into his revelations, to assist the court in its investigation and possible prosecution of those connected with the crimes," the statement furthered. In response to the petition, the Head of Information and evidence unit, Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC, M. P. Dillon, wrote to confirm that the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court had officially received, registered, and promised to review the submission. According the letter, the office of the ICC prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, would treat the issues raised in the petition within its mandate. "This communication has been duly entered in the communications register of the office," the letter read. "We will give consideration to this communication, as appropriate, in accordance with the Provisions of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court." The letter concluded with a promise by the Court to communicate its decision once determined. http://saharareporters.com/2014/11/09/international-criminal-court-considering-action-against-modu-sheriff-and-ihejirika |
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is deliberately planning to shut out Christians in the country from voting in the 2015 general elections. The President of CAN, Ayo Oritsejafor, who stated this at the association’s national executive council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, said he was suspicious of a sinister motive by the Commission following its poor handling of the distribution of the permanent voters’ cards. He, however, warned that Christians would resist such a plan if the Commission was truly harbouring it just as he appealed to faithful to register and vote in other to participate in governance. Mr. Oritsejafor did however not substantiate his claims. He did not say exactly how the electoral body is shutting out Christians and how it is failing to issue them cards. He only said, “I want to say passionately to Nigerians, go and get your voters’ cards. I want to appeal to INEC to double up. Our people must register and have their voters’ cards. “I hope INEC is not doing something deliberate here in order to prevent Christians from voting. I hope Professor Attahiru Jega can hear me. We must all vote and vote wisely.” The clergyman also warned the Boko Haram sect to end their terrorist activities in the North East region, adding that the association was ready to meet senior Muslim clerics with a view to ending the insurgency and unprovoked attack on Christians and churches. He demanded that fifth columnists among security agencies, which allegedly are sabotaging government’s war against insurgency, should be fished out and dismissed. According to him, the nation’s territories that had been taken over by the dreaded Boko Haram sect are predominantly populated by Christians who he said were no longer safe. Mr. Oritsejafor restated that the insurgents were waging a religious war against Christians, adding that he had remained a critic of the satanic activities of the group. “What is happening in the North-east is unacceptable,” he said. “What is happening there is unacceptable to us. Christians are the main victims. We are not saying that other people are not affected. But Christians are the ones affected more. All the places where Boko Haram has foisted their flags are dominated by Christians.” “They have taken over Mubi in Adamawa state which is dominated by Christians. Somebody will now tell me this is not religion. Who is fooling who? Nigerians should accept that we have a problem,” the leader of Christian community in Nigeria stated. Again, Mr. Oritsejafor did not provide facts and figures to back his claim that adherents of a particular religion have been more on the receiving end of the Boko Haram insurgency. The CAN president however called on Nigerians to pray to God to put an end to the mindless killings. He said he would not join other Nigerians who had created names for themselves by constantly criticising the military, but would continue to ask the leadership of the military to fish out saboteurs if the war against terror must be won. He said, “All well meaning Nigerians must pray and continue to pray. We must pray. I will not join those condemning our security agencies. They are Nigerians. Women are losing their husbands and children are losing their fathers. I want to challenge the military. They can do better. They must continue to fish out those sabotaging their efforts. Those people should be expelled. They are in all the security agencies. “No matter the intention you have, if you have people working against you, you will not succeed. There are too many people in the system working against the system. Why should these kind of things be happening? Innocent people are being killed. It’s too much. Enough is enough,” Mr. Oritsejafor told the audience. Mr. Oritsejafor also reminded the Federal Government and other Nigerians of the need to adopt new approach in the war against Boko Haram, noting that the use of force alone could not end the insurgent activities. According to him, “Even though I have said the military must continue to work harder, guns and bullets alone will not save this problem. Boko Haram is an ideology. Let us not run away from it. You do not defeat an ideology with guns and bullets. You defeat an ideology with a superior ideology. Boko Haram will not listen to me. “I want to make an appeal to our Muslim clerics and Muslim political leaders to come together and see how they can help us solve this problem. They have the solution. There are some muslim scholars Boko Haram members respect. To a large extent, that is the only way out. “As members of CAN, we are ready to meet with them. I believe in progressive dialogue. This is my strong appeal. I want to appeal to those at the grassroots. This connects to the leaders. The leaders should talk to those at the grassroots. They should give reliable intelligence to our security agents. Please, do not harbour these people. They are not fighting for you. Expose them. While noting that there were journalists at the meeting, the cleric asked them to pass the message to the relevant authorities. He said Nigerians would like to have a better country where everyone was equal and have respect for the constitution. In fact, we want one constitution where everyone will follow. Those saying Boko Haram is not religious are deceiving themselves. “We want a Nigeria where everyone is safe. We want a Nigerian where a man is not judged by his religion. That is the Nigeria we all want. If we want one united Nigeria, we must all pay the price for it.” Mr. Oritsejafor called on the international community to assist Nigeria and its people to surmount the current challenges. He said, “I believe as bad as the situation is, with God, all things are possible. I know that there is God. He will not forsake us. We have restrained our people so much and we will continue to restrain them. But I beg Nigerians to not let this continue. These are dangerous and serious times. “I was reading a report from a priest in Borno of how churches have been destroyed. I wonder why the international community is not saying anything. Is this not human rights violation? We call on government, NEMA, NGOs, the international community. We need help. Our people are dying. Come and help us.” https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/170655-can-accuses-inec-of-plotting-to-disenfranchise-nigerian-christians.html |
The Deputy Governor of Borno state, Zanna Mustapha, said in Yola on Monday that going by the ease with which Boko Haram was capturing territories in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, the three North-Eastern states would soon be history. “If the Federal Government does not add extra effort, in the next two to three months, the three North- Eastern states will no longer be in existence,” he said. “The Federal Government has tried its best but their best is not enough because rather than going after the insurgents, it is the insurgents that are going after us. It is a big crime that the criminals are better equipped than the military and they are just few kilometres from the Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states capitals.” The deputy governor was in Adamawa to visit thousands of Borno indigenes that were forced to leave their state and schools following Boko Haram attacks in Mubi. He said the continuous occupation of more towns by Boko Haram had confirmed the Borno state governor’s statement that the terrorists possessed superior weapons. He disclosed that 13 local governments in Borno, three in Adamawa and others in Yobe were currently under the control of Boko Haram. He said, going by intelligence reports, if the Federal Government did not step up its security measures the fall of the three states would only be a matter of days or weeks. Mr. Mustapha expressed his doubts on the purported ceasefire agreement between the Federal Government and the terrorists. “We are yet to believe that there is a ceasefire because the first day after the announcement was made, over 30 people were killed in Borno State, and (the terrorists) continued with their rampage in Adamawa, Gombe and only this morning there was a bomb blast in Yobe,” he said. “Let us appeal to the international community to come to our rescue otherwise in the next few months the three states may not exist.” Mr. Mustapha accused the insurgents of committing war crimes, saying they deployed anti-aircraft missiles in killing the people against international rules and conventions. The Borno deputy governor spoke in Yola shortly before a former Vice President and Presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, lamented, in Abuja, the ease with which towns in the North-East were falling into the hands of the insurgents. Atiku wondered why the Nigerian government was unable to overwhelm Boko Haram despite the claim by the administration that an increase in the country’s security budget would help relevant agencies and the military tackle the insurgency. “The situation in which we find ourselves today is grave,” the former vice president said. “Much of Borno, and the north of Adamawa and Yobe states is already at the mercy of the terrorists. It started a few months ago with Bama, which is nearly 400 kilometres from Yola, capital of Adamawa State. “The next major town to be taken by terrorists was Gwoza, where a terrorist caliphate flag has long been hoisted. Smaller towns near Gwoza such as Pulka and Limankra are equally not free. Next was Madagali. The town is still being occupied. Then fell Gulak. Next was Michika, then Bazza. Next was the twin town of Uba which is half Adamawa and half Bornu. Its neighboring town of Lassa was also overrun. Uba was the latest town captured before the terrorists trampled on Mubi. People from these troubled areas are now pouring into Yola for safety. “As somebody who hails from Adamawa State, you can appreciate why I feel such emotion at the fate of my people. For whatever reason, our defence forces are unable to cope and unable to defend. My sympathies go out to the soldiers who find themselves in a situation not of their making. This is a crisis of leadership.” Also speaking in Yola, the Adamawa state governor, Bala Ngilari, who had earlier said the state was not under siege, sympathized with the people of the affected states. “We are under siege for now, although security agents are doing their best,” he said. “With prayers, very soon, Boko Haram will become a thing of the past.” He said that certain things in life, like the Boko Haram insurgency, defied logic. “No matter the situation, one day it will come to an end,” he said. He noted that the Second World War, in which about 20 million people were killed, was now history. “The reason why we are facing this insurgency is because we have offended God, and when the rest of the world is going to space it’s unfortunate that we are left behind, plagued by insurgency and other problems,” he said. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/170534-borno-govt-raises-alarm-says-boko-haram-may-capture-entire-three-north-east-states-in-days.html |
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday summoned the Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Adamu Mua’zu, the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Suleiman Abba, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha and four others following a complaint by the House of Representatives Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, that they were plotting to unlawfully reconvene the House before its December 3 adjourned date. Also summoned are the Attorney General of the Federation, (AGF), Mohammed Adoke (SAN), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the House of Representatives (who are all listed as respondents in the motion. They are to appear before the court on Friday. Justice Armed Ramat Mohammed, in a ruling, ordered parties in an ex-parte application filed on Mondayby Tambuwal to maintain status quo pending the hearing and determination of the motion. The judge also ordered that an enrolled order of the court, accompanied with a copy of the ex-parte motion be served on the defendants for them to appear in court on Friday and show reasons why the reliefs contained in the ex-parte application should not be granted. Justice Mohammed gave the ruling after listening to Jibrin Okutepa and Sunday Ameh (both Senior Advocates of Nigeria) arguments on the motion ex-parte. “Having listened to applicant’s counsel and read the processes filed in court, I am of the view that the defendants should be given notice. An exhibit attached to the motion ex- parte shows that there is an urgent need for an order to preserve the res,” the judge held. Okutepa (SAN) had, while moving the motion, told the court that “the defendants have concluded plans to summon the House for the purpose of removing Tambuwal as Speaker.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/tambuwal-court-summons-muazu-adoke-ihedioha-igp-others/ |

The officer in charge of police armoury in Kaduna, deputy superintendent Nanbol Audu who was recently arrested for selling firearms to criminals and prominent people has shot himself to death. The officer was arrested together with one Zingkur Joseph of Trade Centre Jos, and Samuel Adamu of Kuru Jos-South Local Government Area of Plateau State stealing police guns. Police said one of the suspects arrested with officer Audu was a local gun maker. They were arrested with firearms hidden in a car including eleven G3 rifles, police commissioner Umar Shehu has said adding that Joseph and Adamu were emissaries of other people sent to Kaduna with the sum of N400, 000 to buy guns illegally. Police confirmed that local chiefs and other prominent people were among the people buying arms from suspects. According to officials, officer Audu was held at a police detention facility in Kaduna pending the completion of investigation. While in detention, he collected a gun from a patrol officer and shot himself in the tummy at about 5:40am this morning. Commissioner Shehu confirmed that Audu actually committed suicide and did not leave any written message to explain his intention adding that some police officers on duty provided him with the rifle he used in killing himself. “It is true the officer killed himself this morning at about 5:40am. The incidence occurred in one of our offices. Some police officers on duty gave him a gun and while they were not with him, he shot himself in the stomach. They heard the sound of gunshot and rushed back but found him dead. Three officers have been arrested in connection with the incidence.” Mr. Shehu said preliminary investigation indicated that Audu shot himself without any explanations but police are still looking for details. He also ruled out murder in the inquiry. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/daily/top-stories/38341-breaking-kaduna-police-armourer-detained-for-gun-running-commits-suicide |

By Femi Aribisala Paul’s statement that all scriptures are written by the inspiration of God is, itself, not inspired. The bible is the most important book ever compiled. However, it is also one of the most dangerous. It is used to edify and it is also used to deceive. Christians like to pretend that the bible was written by one person. But in reality, it was written by 40 different authors from three continents in three different languages. Jesus says: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat.” (Matthew 13:24-25). This portrait of the kingdom is directly applicable to the bible. The bible is a book of wheat and weeds. In it, the truth of God is presented side-by-side with grievous misrepresentations of God. Justification of Evil The bible can be used (and has been used) to justify evil. It tolerates incest: “They got him drunk that night, and the older girl went in and had sexual intercourse with her father.” (Genesis 19:33). It supports the selling of daughters: “If a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not be freed at the end of six years.” (Exodus 21:7). It supports witch-hunting: “A witch must not be allowed to live.” (Exodus 22:18). The bible supports pogroms: “The God of Israel says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbour.’” (Exodus 32:27). It supports discrimination against the handicapped: “No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed.” (Leviticus 21:18). The bible supports slavery: “Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.” (Leviticus 25:44). It supports discrimination against women: “Set the value of a male between the ages of twenty and sixty at fifty shekels of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel; and if it is a female, set her value at thirty shekels.” (Leviticus 27:3). Human sacrifice The bible supports human sacrifice: “Not even a human being who has been unconditionally dedicated may be bought back; he must be put to death.” (Leviticus 27:29). It supports capital punishment: “The assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses.” (Numbers 15:36). It supports drinking of blood: “They shall not lie down until they have eaten what they capture and have drunk the blood of the slain!” (Numbers 23:24). The bible supports the rape of virgins: “Save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.” (Numbers 31:18). It supports infanticide: “We destroyed all the people in every town we conquered- men, women, and children alike.” (Deuteronomy 3:6). It supports religious intolerance: if an idol-worshiper is found, Moses says: “take that person outside the town and stone him to death.” (Deuteronomy 17:2-5). The bible supports genocide: “When the LORD your God lets you capture the city, kill every man in it.” (Deuteronomy 20:16). It supports “suicide-bombing:” “Samson killed more people at his death than he had killed during his life.” (Judges 16:30) . It supports the abduction of women: “While the girls were dancing, each man caught one and carried her off to be his wife.” (Judges 21:23). It supports cannibalism: “We boiled my son, and ate him.” (2 Kings 6:29). It has anti-Semitic vitriol: “(Jews) are against both God and man.” (1 Thessalonians 2:15). Bible Errors The bible is full of mistakes. We are told Abraham had several sons (Genesis 25:1-6); then only two (Galatians 4:22); and then only one. (Hebrews 11:17). Jacob was buried in a cave at Machpelah bought from Ephron the Hittite (Genesis 50:13); but then again he was buried in a sepulchre at Shechem bought from the sons of Hamor. (Acts 7:15-16). Moses had only one wife. Nevertheless he had four different fathers-in-law; Reuel (Exodus 2:18/21); Jethro (Exodus 4:18); Raguel (Numbers 10:29); and Hobab. (Judges 4:11). Jesse had eight sons with David as the eighth. (1 Samuel 17:12-14). Then again he had seven sons with David as the seventh. (1 Chronicles 2:13-15). Saul’s daughter married to David is mistakenly said to be Merab instead of Michal. (1 Samuel 18:19). Jehoshaphat, king of Judah (2 Chronicles 20:35), is mistakenly said to be king of Israel. (2 Chronicles 21:2). Zechariah’s prophecy about the thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12-13) is mistakenly attributed to Jeremiah. (Matthew 27:9). Bible Contradictions The bible is also full of contradictions. Moses says God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. (Exodus 20:11). But Isaiah says God is never tired and does not need to rest. (Isaiah 40:28). God created man last, after creating animals. (Genesis 1:25-26). But then again he created man before creating animals. (Genesis 2:18-19). The Nephilim giants were wiped out in the flood. (Genesis 6:4). Nevertheless, their descendants reappeared after the flood. (Numbers 13:33). The peoples of the earth had different languages. (Genesis 10:5; Genesis 10:20). But then again they had only one language. (Genesis 11:1). Moses says God asked the Israelites to build him a sanctuary so he can dwell among them. (Exodus 25: .But Stephen insists God does not dwell in temples built by men. (Acts 7:48). Moses says God changes his mind. (Exodus 32:14). But Balaam says he does not. (Numbers 23:19). God is said to have blessed Jehu for destroying the house of Ahab. (2 Kings 10:30). But Hosea says God condemned him for doing so. (Hosea 1:4). Pauline Confusion This goes to show that Paul’s statement that all scriptures are written by the inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16) is, itself, not inspired. Indeed, more discrepancies come from Paul himself than from any other person in the bible. Paul says God is not the author of confusion. (1 Corinthians 14:33). But Moses says God confused the tongues at Babel. (Genesis 11:9). Paul says God is “the God of peace.” (Romans 15:33). But Moses says he is “a man of war.” (Exodus 15:3). Paul says God dwells in unapproachable light. (1 Timothy 6:16). But David says he dwells in thick darkness. (Psalm 18:11). Paul says no one is righteous. (Romans 3:10). But Moses says God considered Noah to be righteous. (Genesis 7:1). Paul says the law was given through angels. (Galatians 3:19). But Moses says God gave it to him directly. (Deuteronomy 10:1-5). Paul says all men are condemned to death because of Adam’s sin. (Romans 5:12/19). But Moses says children are not to suffer for their parent’s sins. (Deuteronomy 24:16). Paul says God justifies the ungodly. (Romans 4:5). But Moses and Solomon say he does not. (Exodus 23:7; Proverbs 17:15). Thank God for Jesus We Christians make fools of ourselves by insisting, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that everything in the bible is true. God raised one man to resolve this mess. He is the Amen; the one true and faithful witness. That man is Jesus. Jesus is the final authority on things of God. Only Jesus’ words present the undiluted and unvarnished truth of God. (John 14:10; John 8:26). They should be put in our hearts, and not just left in a book. (Jeremiah 31:31-33). http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/bible-book-wheat-weeds/#sthash.aBnxyWQe.dpuf |
T SOURCE: READ MORE: PM NEWS, LAGOS YOU MAY ALSO LIKE READ NEXT he drama between Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi and the presidency seems to have taken a new twist. In the latest spate of accusation and counter-accusation, Amaechi reminded the Presidency that President Goodluck Jonathan is not his ‘Prefect’, noting that, he cannot threaten him of sanctions for criticizing the president for not attracting developmental projects to the state. Rotimi Amaechi The Presidency had angrily reacted to a claim made by Amaechi that the the cause of the frosty relationship between him and the Presidency was because President Goodluck Jonathan hates Rivers people and that the president ceded Soku oil wells in Kalabari to Bayelsa and 40 Etche oil wells also in Rivers to Abia state. Amaechi also accused the wife of the president, Patience Jonathan of corruption. He said Patience wanted him to bring the money meant for Rivers people to Abuja. In addition to that, Amaechi at a mega rally held in Port Harcourt on Saturday rubbished claims by President Jonathan that the All Progressive Congress (APC) was a party only on billboards. And today, in his reply to the statement from the office of President Jonathan, which accused him of “Political rascality,” the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Ibim Semenitari said Governor Amaechi is an elected official and not a mere ‘prefect’. Semenitari also faulted Reuben Abati, the President’s spokesman for failing to get his facts right before publishing the statement despite his wealth of experience. She added that Amaechi never mentioned the name of the President nor his wife during his speech at the rally. Semenitari said, “I would want to say that the Presidential Spokesman should be careful for the kind of threats he issues to an elected Governor. “He should remember that the President is not a prefect of the governor. He was elected as President just as the Governor was elected as a governor, and Nigeria is a federation. “And please, Abati should know his limits and need not attempt to cross his boundaries. “It is a bit strange to hear the kind of comments coming out of the Presidency and this shows that the statement was already prepared before governor Amaechi spoke. “At no point in his speech did Governor Amaechi make any references. His wife was not even discussed because she is not an official of government. “I do not understand where or how Mr. Abati got his story, so we just take it that this is one of those clear indications of rascality within the Presidency trying to call a dog a bad name and hang it”. http://saharareporters.com/2014/10/27/you-cannot-threaten-me-amaechi-replies-presidency |
Chris Mamman, the immediate past National President of Eggon Cultural Association and a gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen men, his campaign director said Monday. Mr. Mamman was seized Sunday night few hours after angry youths attacked him and burnt his car at what supposed to be a peace meeting between him and other governorship candidates, including the immediate past Minister for Information, Labaran Maku. Mr. Mamman is among 13 other aspirants vying for the governorship of Nasarawa State in the 2015 general elections on the platform of PDP. Mr. Mamman was picked in his house in Lafia around 8.30 p.m. after a mob attacked him and burnt his car at the palace of Aren Eggon, Bala Angbazo, in Nasarawa Eggon, the Director General of Chris Mamman’s campaign organization, Nawani Aboki, told PREMIUM TIMES. He claimed the attack on the candidate and his subsequent abduction were the handiwork of his political opponents. “Our candidate was in Nasarawa Eggon as part of Effort by the Eggon traditional council to ensure that they are able to speak with one voice and have one candidate but as our candidate was approaching the place mob came out and accosted him and manhandled him but was later rescued,” he said. “All other candidates of Eggon extraction where there; Maku, and Ewuga but we don’t know who might have masterminded the attack among them. “Even after he was rescued, we were told later in the day that some unknown people came and took him away and we don’t know who the person is and we are yet to make contact with him 12 hours after,” he said. Mr. Aboki said his team will eventually inform the police if at the end of the day they are unable to find him. However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Umar Numan, said he was yet to be briefed over the matter. He said investigations will commence when such report was forwarded. On Sunday, Mr. Mamman was in the palace on the invitation of the paramount ruler alongside Solomon Ewuga, a senator, and Mr. Maku, to discuss how to pick a consensus candidate among them to represent the Eggon interest in the 2015 general elections. They all escaped unhurt as angry youth stormed the palace of the paramount ruler of the Eggon people, on Sunday evening. The traditional ruler was hosting a reconciliatory meeting between three Eggon sons seeking to be Nasarawa governor under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP which resulted in the youth, setting ablaze a Toyota Corolla belonging to Chris Mamman. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/170213-nasarawa-pdp-guber-aspirant-kidnapped-after-mob-attack.html |
A former Information Minister, Labaran Maku, and a senator, Solomon Ewuga, escaped unhurt as angry youth stormed the palace of Bala Angbazo, the paramount ruler of the Eggon people, on Sunday evening. The traditional ruler was hosting a reconciliatory meeting between three Eggon sons seeking to be Nasarawa governor under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The youth, who trooped to the palace in their hundreds, set ablaze a Toyota Corolla belonging to Chris Mamman, the immediate past National President of Eggon Cultural Association, ECD. Messrs Mamman, Maku, and Ewuga are all PDP governorship aspirants. The meeting was being held to choose one a consensus from among the three Eggon aspirants. Mr. Maku, who was attending the meeting for the first time, escaped unhurt before Messrs Ewuga and Mamman. The two men were rescued by military officers who came to the scene in three Hilux vans to forestall further destruction of property as the youth had blocked the Mr. Ewuga’s entourage and prevented them from going out of the palace. Ibrahim Audu, a resident of Nasarawa Eggon, said the youth were angry with Mr. Mamman’s decision to contest the election. When contacted, the Nasarawa Police spokesperson, Umar Numan, confirmed the attack and that Mr. Mamman’s car was burnt. He said calm had returned to the area and no arrest has been made. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/170166-nasarawa-youth-attack-maku-ewuga-others-burn-car.html |
By: Luka Binniyat KADUNA – Well known Islamic Cleric, Sheik Dr. Ahmed Gumi has foretold of violence should President Goodluck Jonathan go on to contest and win the 2015 Presidential election. Gumi made this known in an open letter he wrote the President yesterday and made available to Vanguard in Kaduna. Reads the letter: “We have never met despite the fact that we were all born and we lived for more than half a century in this great vast country Nigeria. It’s here we all grew up and were educated and I presume except by divine prudence it’s here that we will all be buried. “So what truly matters is the legacy that we will bequest our children and the next generation of Nigerians to come. We will not want it a burnt country with hundreds of thousands dead, maimed or displaced people because of the thoughtlessness and recklessness of its stewardship. “Nigeria today is a single railway line with two heavily loaded trains spending towards each other in opposite direction. President Jonathan “You need to come out of the cocoon and face the reality. Denial of the truth can never solve problems. “Mr. President, from what I heard from people who are close to you, is that you are humble with a soft heart. But still humility is never enough for an effective leadership. Leadership is about listening and taking the good advices from people of wisdom not from those that benefit from you or have any agenda other than the unity and progress of this Nation. “The mantle of the leadership of this country was given to you under oath. Almost four years ago you swore to protect ‘the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, well- being and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’. You said: ‘ I will not allow my personal interest to influence my official conduct or my official decisions; and ‘I will do right to all manner of people, according to law, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will’ “Unfortunately, many people including me before God believe you broke some of your oath. I’ll only need to refer you back to the honest open letter advice you were given by your political godfather. You appear more Ijaw than Nigerian. It’s seldom fathers will deceive their children. Yet you never listen. And sadly by your recalcitrance you are dangerously leading this nation to chaos and turmoil that only God knows were it will end. “Muslims have officially registered to you on occasions your partiality. Northern groups have complained about your bias. The youth about your neglect. “You have divided the nation gravelly on the religious divided. Already we heard a call in a church that you are now a savior. Now, not of Nigeria but the church in Nigeria. With this religious zeal on both sides, each side looking at the wrong people for salvation the nation is heading towards disaster. “My fellow country man, it’s unfortunate that your stand on many issues have made you into a polarizing figure while the exalted office you occupy needs a nationalistic one. Surely with the Christian votes and northern PDP followers you can win another election but you will also set the nation into another turmoil because that segment of the nation that rejects you do so because they believe rightly or wrongly you are involved negatively in the Boko Haram Saga. The natural thing any good leader will do in this situation is to step down for a person all the segments of the nation will have confidence with for their well-being. A credible person that will not stir apprehension. The decision is not about your rights but about responsibility. “Therefore as you pray in the Holy Land seek for God’s indulgence to show you the light of honor and do the right thing. It’s God’s command that Nigeria stay united and ‘what therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder’. “A word of wisdom says: ‘He who consults is never disappointed and he who seeks God’s choice never regret’ so please don’t brush it aside call men of wisdom to advice you too. “I for a start, I am hereby candidly advising you to relinquished your presidential ambition because of peace, stability and well being of millions of innocent Nigerians. There are many politicians that can ‘finish’ it on your behalf. The PDP can present Akpabio or Obi or Orji etc. “I rest my case here. “Ahmad Gumi” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/2015-jonathans-re-election-will-set-nigeria-ablaze-gumi/#sthash.YMXEwaPl.dpuf |

10 October, 2014 Jakarta | A catholic priest from the island of Java in Indonesia who has woken up from a 17 month long coma has converted himself to Islam after the man claims Allah spoke to him and showed him “the beauty of the heavens”. The 87-year old priest from Spain has lived and preached on the island for more then 43 years and is fluent in Javanese and various dialects of the different ethnic groups of the island and is a well known and respected figure amongst all religious groups of the area. The man who has suffered a cardiac arrest while helping local volunteers to fix the roof of his own church and fell an incredible two stories high has managed to survive and come out of his coma, in brittle shape, yet a changed man. preaching Priest Eduardo Vincenzo Maria Gomez weeks before his tragic accident “I know nothing of Islam. Never once have I read the Quran but God spoke to me and asked me to follow him to the heavens and the Holy light shone through my entire being and behold the golden gates of heaven appeared before me and God told me his name and it was Allah” told the newly convert to a journalist of the Kalimantan Press. The man who miraculously suffers no spinal injury should be able to walk soon, admits the physician who took care of him at South Jakarta’s Metropolitan Medical Centre. “This must be the strongest 80-year old I have ever seen. His bones should be smashed to pieces” ponders Jim Won May, who has practiced medecine for over twenty years. His conversion to Islam took most of his church followers by surprise, but interestingly enough, already half of his christian followers have showed interest in converting to Islam. “If Allah is the true God, I don’t want to be misled in the wrong direction on judgement day. I trust Father Eduardo. We all believe in him” explains one of his followers. The priest who is still under medical attention has already ordered the construction of a new mosque and his followers are already hard at work to find the funds necessary for the task. “We owe it to Father Eduardo for all he has done for us” comments one of the devotees of the old catholic church, that is now for sale. http://worldnewsdailyreport.com/catholic-priest-wakes-up-from-coma-after-17-months-converts-to-islam/ |

By Joseph Erunke ABUJA – ALL prominent Nigerians invited Wedneday to the public presentation and launch of a book meant to promote President Goodluck Jonathan’s achievements in office shunned the event which held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, leaving the organizers confused. President Jonathan, himself who was expected at the launch of the resource book that contains what the author called “proper and effective assessment” of his administration stayed away without sending any representative just as serving governors, ministers, senators, House of Assembly members as well as other prominent Nigerians shunned the occasion. When the organizers, who had earlier arrived the venue in readiness of the event stayed for several hours without noticing the presence of any of the invitees, they without hesitation left. The book entitled: “President Goodluck Jonathan: His Speeches and Heroic Deeds”, according to the author, Tana Ejenavwo, documented selected speeches of the president which he noted, were indeed reflective of his deep philosophical thoughts on issues of governance, progress and unity of Nigeria. “It also provides authentic and verifiable information for sectoral growth assessment, as encapsulated in the Transformation Agenda of the administration,” he added. The book, according to the chairman of the book launch organizing committee, Ahmed Danjuma Abubakar, unveiled the methodological disposition of President Jonathan in handling national issues in what he called “uncommon civility, instead of belligerent approaches that brutalizes our national psych.” He said the book also ‘divulges the prudency in the management of resources and accountability in allocations for infrastructural projects, as well as issues on how to balance Nigeria’s internal social and political conditions. When asked to comment on the development, the author, Mr Tanu Ejenavwo refused to comment. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/guests-shun-jonathans-book-launch-abuja/#sthash.1SfCNWaS.dpuf |
The 19-year old law student of the Ahmadu Bello University [ABU] suspected to manifest some symptoms of the Ebola Virus Disease [EVD] has tested negative to the virus. Authorities of ABU and the Kaduna State Government had sent the patient’s blood to Lagos for testing after he reportedly manifested some symptoms associated with Ebola while on admission at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital [ABUTH]. The state Commissioner For Health, Thot Dogo, had told PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday night that the result of the test was being expected on Wednesday afternoon (today). But Ebola Alert, an authoritative evidence-driven group of volunteer professionals working on Ebola Virus Disease interventions in the country, told this newspaper laboratory test has shown the student does not have the virus. An official of the group, who simply identified himself as Ladi, said the test, concluded earlier on Tuesday night, came out negative. “Yes, it is true that the result is negative,” Ladi said in response to an enquiry by PREMIUM TIMES. “Whatever information Ebola Alert puts out is authentic.” PREMIUM TIMES had contacted the group after it tweeted on its handle (@EbolaAlert): “The Kaduna rumour is not #Ebola after laboratory test. “Reaching a diagnosis of #Ebola is dependent on a laboratory test. However close it may be, it is not Ebola until it is Ebola.” The Federal Ministry of Health and the Kaduna State Government are expected to announce the result of the test later on Wednesday. The Kaduna Commissioner for Health, Mr. Dogo, had told PREMIUM TIMES that the student had been on admission at the hospital for a week. He said after he “developed rashes with redness of the eyes”, authorities became suspicious and decided to isolate him and test him for Ebola. The state government also provided protective equipment to medical officers attending to the patient, Mr. Dogo said. But in a series of tweets Tuesday, Ebola Alert urged doctors and hospitals to refrain from divulging patients’ information so as not to stigmatize them while also creating panic in society. It reminded Nigerian doctors and hospitals to note that several other diseases share symptoms with Ebola. The organization said, “We hope our hospitals will continue to keep health information of their clients and care givers confidential especially # SUSPECTED#EBOLA . “It is equally important to stay professional by not creating panic in the interest of your staff, patients and country at large. #Ebola “Several diseases share symptoms with #Ebola and there are other viral haemorrhagic fevers. “In an #EbolaOutbreak , it is challenging for the healthcare workers to balance between high suspicion and misdiagnosis. Remain professional. “It will be hard to have public panic if patients #health#information is kept confidential as is #ethically required; even #Ebola patients. “We hope our colleagues continue to remain professional as we work on this together. #Ebola#HCW#Nigeria Do not put patients’ info out there. “When you wrongly classify an ill person as an #Ebola patient, we hope you will be around to clean the stigma caused. #CAUTION “Reaching a diagnosis of #Ebola is dependent on a laboratory test. By Ogaga Ifowodo PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan’s hostage negotiator, Dr Stephen Davis, has done Nigerians a great favour and put his employer in a tight corner. Davis has broken the official taboo against naming names of persons behind Boko Haram, those who fund the ceaseless bloodbaths, abduction of adolescent girls as sexual slaves, arson and more. We owe Davis a debt of gratitude for letting us know more than our government has been willing to disclose: the mere geographical location of the Chibok girls coupled with the rote assurance of their safety. Dr Stephen Davis The utter secrecy surrounding what the government is doing or not doing to free the Chibok girls or end the insurgency has led to the unfortunate impression that it is helpless and all we can do is wait for Abubakar Shekau to become human again, renounce violence and lay down his arms. Or wait for the United States to send us night vision goggles and remaindered equipment from its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan before a proper anti-terrorism war can begin. Davis spoke first to a television station in Australia and then to a Nigerian medium, Arise Television . On 29 August, ThisDay published Davis’s revelations under the headline “Australian Negotiator Names Ihejrika, Sheriff as Sponsors of Boko Haram.” Davis points with the certitude of a chief prosecution witness to two highly placed citizens: retired Lt-General Azubuike Ihejirika, former Chief of Army Staff and field commander of the offensive against Boko Haram, and Alhaji Modu Sheriff, former governor of Borno State where Shekau has his headquarters and has planted the first flag of his dreamed Caliphate. The evidence against Azubuike appears thin, but Sheriff, Davis says, “has been funding Boko Haram’s terrorism for years.” Davis has also pointed to an unnamed third person in Abuja whose three nephews allegedly participated in the Nyanya- Abuja bombing that killed 77 people. In his interview with SaharaReporters, the New York-based online news platform, Davis gives further details concerning this man by claiming that he is a top official of the Central Bank and Boko Haram’s banker. To my mind, other than the surprise mention of Ihejirika, the real news is the proof by inference Davis gives of the charge that the government may indeed have been playing politics with the terrorist insurgency that has laid waste to vast swathes of the North East, killed thousands and scarred millions. This is not the first time Sheriff’s name would be linked to Boko Haram, but whereas we could only watch as the government camp and the opposition traded accusations of playing politics with the insurgency, Davis, in the final analysis, has now indicted the President. Mostly through his underlying tone of incredulity as to why Boko Haram’s sponsors have not been arrested, why the SSS “doesn’t seem inclined to interrogate” the three nephews of the Abuja man for “concrete evidence against their uncle in whose house they were living.” The implications of his words must have been clear to Davis, hence, I suspect, his attempt to absolve his employer of blame. If Jonathan arrests prominent politicians who are likely to run against him in 2015, he would lay himself open to the charge of hounding the opposition to enhance his re-election. To deflect that charge, he says, there has to be “a very high threshold” of evidence sufficient to “keep the Western nations happy.” This can’t be higher than the normal weight of evidence to sustain a criminal charge and it is obvious that Davis is convinced the threshold was reached a long time ago. According to ThisDay , Davis “was emphatic that the people he names are current sponsors of Boko Haram,” that he had information on “some of them about three years ago; one of them four years ago,” and that one even provided “money and . . . in one case . . . six (Toyota) Hilux vehicles used for suicide bombing.” Yet, by the end of Davis’s testimony, the line between the bad opposition politicians and the good government is blurred. Sheriff, now the de facto poster-politician allegedly sponsoring Boko Haram, has decamped to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party “in the hope this will give him protection.” What other course of action does Jonathan have now than to order the immediate arrest of all the persons that his hostage negotiator claims are the chief sponsors of Boko Haram? And to charge them to court forthwith? Unless, of course, his hostage negotiator is a rabble rouser, in which case we must wonder how and why he has worked for three successive presidents. It can’t be the case that the evidence that emboldens Davis to name names is unavailable to Jonathan and his security and intelligence heads. Jonathan must know that failure to act would give credence to the opposition’s counter-claim: a conviction that the insurgency was fomented by his political enemies to make the country ungovernable and prevent his re-election, but that the plot boomeranged and so it is best left unaddressed in order to gain him sympathy votes. My hunch is that Davis, an independent contractor, spoke at the bidding of the President, but even if he acted independently in order to force Jonathan’s hand, that should not prevent decisive action against any suspected Boko Haram sponsor, irrespective of party affiliation or status, against whom prima facie evidence can be adduced. All that is needed is political will. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/jonathans-hostage-negotiator-puts-tight-corner/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook |
The South-East chapter of the All Progressives Congress [APC] has warned its Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] counterpart against the adoption of President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2015 presidential election. It noted that the president had repeatedly failed the people of the zone and that it would be fatal for the entire zone to endorse him. The party said it wondered why the zonal chapter of the PDP would bemoan the marginalisation of the zone in the recent promotion in the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, and at the same time endorse Mr. Jonathan for the coming election. In a well-attended meeting at Umuahia, the Abia State capital at the weekend, the PDP governors, ministers, senators, members of the National Assembly and State Assemblies and other political leaders from the South-East zone rose from a crucial meeting bemoaning the marginalization of Ndigbo in the recent Police promotions. They also endorsed Mr. Jonathan for another term in office. The APC said in a statement by its spokesperson, Osita Okechukwu, that although it would not support the marginalization of the South-East or any zone, it could not reconcile the crass parody or the hopelessness exhibited by the zonal chapter of the PDP in Umuahia. It said the PDP was not only in power at the federal level, but Mr. Jonathan was the adopted son of the zone. “South-East APC for the umpteenth time had warned on the danger of putting all our eggs in one basket and the futility of adopting a clueless, incapable and less than transparent president once again and expecting different result,” the statement said. “For the avoidance of doubt, we have nothing personal against our dear president, but our candid assessment is that he is clueless, incapable and less than transparent to fix a complex Nigeria. “Otherwise, neither the Police Service Commission and the Police Council nor the Inspector General of the Police Force can promote top officers to the rank of DIG and AIG without the perusal of the Commander-in- Chief.” The APC said the zonal PDP chapter had not disclosed the reason the president unceremonious sack of the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Azubike Ihejirika, who was the first Igbo to occupy that position since 1966. On the new allocation of new Polling Units by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the zonal APC chapter challenged the South- East PDP to forthwith unravel what transpired. It said it was the PDP that nominated both the national and Resident Electoral Commissioners, REC, who represent the zone while another Igbo son, Andy Uba, chairs the Senate Committee on INEC. The APC said, “Or is it not appropriate to also remind the South-East PDP that their adopted son, President Jonathan rejected the core recommendation of the Justice Mohammed Uwais Electoral Reform Committee, which proffered that it is better to openly and democratically appoint INEC Commissioners through public advertisement to avoid corrupt officials? “We must be guided by an ancient maxim that we cannot act like the chicken that bends its neck to pot cooking it instead of the knife that killed it. “Therefore, to avoid further marginalization, why re-elect a president who condone inequality or is careless over crucial matters of national importance where justice and fairness are sine qua non for equity?” https://m.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-east/167292-why-south-east-must-reject-jonathan-in-2015-apc.html |
