•Fears Aspirants’ Gang-up Against Ribadu •I am sure of getting party’s waiver —Marwa •Imposition would affect party — Gulak By Henry Umoru, KINGSLEY OMONOBI AHEAD the October 11 gubernatorial election in Adamawa State, strong indications emerged yesterday that the presidency may have bowed to criticisms trailing its support for former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, just as it has made a U- Turn on him. President Goodluck Jonathan and Mallam Nuhu Ribadu It was gathered yesterday that for fear of any gang up against Ribadu if he emerges the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP by other aggrieved aspirants and party leaders, the presidency was said to have now soft- pedalled on Ribadu. Speculations have been on that Ribadu was drafted into the Adamawa governorship race by the Presidency on the recommendation of the Principal Private Secretary to the President, Ambassador Hassan Tukur. The presidential aide and Ribadu were classmates who have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with each other. Meanwhile, former military administrator of Lagos and Borno States, Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, rtd) yesterday declared that he will contest the governorship race of Adamawa state under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party adding that he will win the seat for the Party in the bye election slated for October 11 this year. Disclosing that he was sure of getting the party’s waiver to contest the election, General Marwa said that the decampment of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu who is being touted as ‘anointed candidate’ as well as others, posed no threat to his ambition. Also, Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Barrister Ahmed Gulak has warned that imposition would have a disastrous effect on the chance of the party in winning the state’s guber election, stressed that the least anybody could wish the people at this trying moment was for them to be allowed to choose their leader. However, following the support from the Presidency, Ribadu who was the 2011 Presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN and a Chieftain of All Progressives Congress, APCRibadu, picked his governorship form through his political associate, Hammidu Mahmud, at the national secretariat of the PDP in Abuja where he told Journalists that he was not aware that President Goodluck Jonathan had anointed him as the party’s governorship candidate. According to him, “We are not aware that the president wants Ribadu, it was some PDP chieftains in the state who called on Ribadu to come and contest for the governorship of the state. So the question of the president wanting Ribadu does not arise in the case.” It will be recalled that the Presidency, particularly the PPS has neither denied nor confirmed the speculations, Ribadu has consistently denied that he was running for the governorship of Adamawa on the strength of an alleged presidential support.h Ribadu who has just joined the party must get a waiver from the PDP in line with PDP’s constitution, Section 50 (9) which says: “There shall be a minimum of two year membership span for a member to be eligible to stand for election into any public office, unless the appropriate executive committee gives a waiver or rules to the contrary.” According to a member of Board of Trustees, BoT of PDP from the South-South zone and a member of the president’s inner caucus, “The race in the coming days is likely to be very interesting but we have all resolved to be very careful because in politics, you cannot take chances, especially ones that are likely to jeopardize the chances of your party. Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a source said was waiting for aggrieved members of PDP who will kick when Ribadu eventually becomes the PDP candidate as he was said to be waiting to lure them to the APC. Those who bought forms according to the record at the Mobilisation office in the office of the National Organising Secretary and obtained by Saturday Vanguard yesterday are the Acting Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri; a three time gubernatorial aspirant, Dr. Umar Ardo; former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Senator Abubakar Girei; former Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Matters, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak; Erstwhile Military Administrator of Lagos and Borno States, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa and former Minister of Statement Foreign Affairs, Dr. Aliyu Idi- Hong. Others are the immediate Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, Dr. Ahmed Modibbo Mohammed; Son of former PDP National Chairman, Awwal Bamanga Tukur; Marcus Natina Gundiri; James Shuiabu Barka; Jerry Kundusi; Engr. Brig. Gen. A.A.V. Kana and Andrawus Sawa. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/adamawa-pdp-ticket-presidency-makes-u-turn-ribadu/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook |
T he All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday said it would sue spokesperson of the States security Service (SSS), Marilyn Ogar, for attempting to blame the party for the series of bomb blasts in the country. APC stated that by stating on national television that whenever the opposition party wins the election, there would be no bomb blasts, but whenever another party wins the election, there would be blasts, Ms. Ogar was implying that the party was responsible for terrorism in Nigeria. SSS spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar A press release issued by APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Saturday demanded Ogar’s resignation. “For the DSS Spokesperson to echo the same capricious statement that has been made in the past by the spokesman of the PDP shows that the agency has dropped its toga of non- partisanship and has descended into the political fray. “If the DSS has any professional ethics, if DSS is not an arm of the PDP, then the agency must publicly dissociate itself from the irresponsible and unfounded allegation by Ogar and disengage her from the service. “'Doing that will be the first step in restoring the credibility, or whatever is left of it, of the DSS. In the alternative, we challenge the DSS to present to Nigerians any evidence it may have to link our party to the spate of bomb blasts in the country. After all, it is trite that he who alleges must prove." The party also commented on Ogar’s allegation that “a certain political party” believed to be APC offered the SSS N14 million as a bribe, saying institutions of state like the SSS must know that their responsibility is to the nation, and not to any political party that may be having a transient hold on power that their loyalty is to the nation, not to any individual. “This way, the institutions will keep their integrity intact and also serve the nation properly. Irrespective of the government in power, institutions of state must stay above the fray, in line with best practices. “This is a lesson that should not be hard for the fellows over there at the DSS to understand, going by the antecedents of their agency. However, where they choose to play politics with their professionalism and integrity, they will soon realise there are working in an agency that is not worth its salt, one that has lost the respect of the citizenry." It saddled the National Assembly with the task of inviting Ogar's to explain if the alleged N14 million bribe was offered and who offered it http://saharareporters.com/2014/08/16/apc-threatens-sue-ogar-over-terrorism-bribery-allegations |
The Minister of Defence, Aliyu Gusau, said on Thursday that Nigeria was ‘under siege’ and called for collective effort in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the country. Mr. Gusau made the call at the graduation dinner/ award night for Course 22 Participants of the National Defence College, NDC, on Wednesday in Abuja. “It is not just government and security services that are in the war, it is our country that is under siege. “It is our war and war can only be won if we keep a united front, while we are concerned about our present we should also think of our future. “The current challenges in some part of the country remind us that military might alone is not enough to ensure peace,’’ he said. Mr. Gusau, however, said that military power was essential to ensure stability without which it would be impossible to build and sustain peace. The minister said without the support of the people, especially the locals, the unseen enemies in an insurgency would retain the perception that they had the upper hand. He said the armed forces required the total and unequivocal support of generality of Nigerians for their actions to remain legitimate. On training, Mr. Gusau said government was focused on renewed collaboration with the NDC to ensure that senior officers of the military were properly trained to enable them face the challenge of terror “To you the graduating participants, I have cause to believe that you have all earned the right to be conferred with the qualification of Fellow of Defence College (FDC),’’ he said. Mr. Gusau stressed that innovation and foresight were needed to curb emerging security threats in the 21st century. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the college in the areas of training, research and development as well as for retaining its position as the centre of excellence. Awards were given to staff and participants who had distinguished themselves. A total of 139 participants, including 15 foreign participants, would graduate from the college on August 8. https://m.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/166211-boko-haram-nigeria-under-siege-defence-minister.html |
A group of soldiers who brought back dead and injured soldiers from the besieged town of Gwoza yesterday fired shots at the main gate at Maimalari Barracks, is home to the 7th Division the Nigerian army. Gwoza, located near the border with Cameroon, fell under the control of Islamist insurgents yesterday, the second major town in Borno State to be captured by Boko Haram after the terrorist group seized Damboa on July 21. Two sources at the barracks told SaharaReporters that the soldiers were angry about the number of dead soldiers’ bodies that had to be deposited at a military hospital in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. They added that the commanding officer of the Bama military unit that was sacked by Boko Haram militants is also missing. The military hospital attached to Maimalari Barracks in Maiduguri received the remains of dead soldiers as well as those with critical injuries who were brought in overnight from Gwoza, a town overrun and seized by Islamist insurgents in a deadly operation early Wednesday. One source said that seven Hilux pick-up vans arrived at the barracks filled with dead bodies and injured soldiers. Several sources disclosed that Boko Haram fighters had massacred at least 100 residents of the town and inflicted a high casualty on Nigerian troops before the soldiers abandoned the town to the superior firepower of the surging insurgents. Boko Haram blew up two bridges in Gwoza, forcing hordes of displaced residents to flee into Cameroon in search of refuge. The new Emir of Gwoza, Mohammed Timta, remains missing more than 24 hours after the militants seized his town. Cameroonian authorities reported that Boko Haram also killed 10 people in a Cameroonian village near Gwoza. The high death toll and injury count among soldiers provoked the gunshots fired by irate soldiers at the main gate of the Maimalari Barracks. “The shooting forced the soldiers on duty at the gate to take cover in order to escape being hit by the bullets,” one of our sources disclosed. One source said the angry soldiers on arrival also demanded to see their commander ask him why they were issued far less weaponry and manpower compared to that of the Boko Haram militants. One of the angry soldiers told SaharaReporters that most of their mortars were manufactured in the early 1960s, adding that some of them failed to fire. He also stated that their rifles often jammed after firing a few times. “The commander went into hiding,” said one source. Frustrated by the development, some of the battle-weary soldiers began to shoot again into the air, saying they wanted their colleagues at the barracks to get a little dose of what they suffered in the bush in Gwoza. One source added that there was great anxiety among families of soldiers involved in the Gwoza battle. “Some of the relatives of the soldiers attempted to check in the hospital to see whether their people were among the dead, but they were not allowed in. The commander gave orders for the gate to be locked,” he said. Two weeks ago, military authorities started building a fence around the hospital to restrict public view of the facility. One officer said the military was worried that people were able to see into the hospital and expose information that the military considered detrimental to the morale of its troops. Some soldiers are reportedly critical of the fencing of the hospital when the barracks remain unsecured and vulnerable to attack. Our sources said there was high tension among soldiers as the commanding officer of the Bama military formation who led a reinforcement of troops to try and repel Boko Haram’s attack is nowhere to found. One military source disclosed that Boko Haram militants had condoned off and laid ambush in all the axes where they suspected that troops would use for reinforcement. “We heard that the Bama formation ran into an ambush and many of the soldiers were killed and some, including the officer, are still missing,” said a military source. http://saharareporters.com/2014/08/07/near-mutiny-army-barracks-maiduguri-over-high-number-nigerian-troops-casualty-gwoza |
An address by Dr. Ahmad A. Gumi on the occasion of the launching of MY VOTE, MY PRIDE at the Gamji Multi-Purpose Center, Kaduna on 22nd July, 2014 Protocol, Assalamu alaikum. Let me state with this quotation by Lyndon Johnson. “The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying walls which imprison man because they are different from other men” Ladies and gentlemen, Nigeria today is facing numerous challenges necessitating the need for individuals to complement government efforts by taking on any of the challenges they are capable of addressing and proffer practical solutions. Such offers however should be nationalistic devoid of tribalism, religion or sectionalism. Allah has created us and brought us together as Nigerians. Those clamoring for separation are only exhibiting their nationalistic deficiencies. Our organization, MY VOTE, MY PRIDE is our humble efforts to tackle the challenges facing the country and complement government efforts. Opposing our ideas is not the solution. The solution lies in joining us to ensure good and credible election and good governance. Our efforts are based on the realization that the whole democratic system revolves around people votes. The people should be allowed to choose their own leaders using their votes. If this process is free, fair and transparent, the people will listen and obey those leaders and the leaders will turn respect the wishes of the people and will do practice their possible to protect the people’s lives, property, the freedom to practice their chosen religion and finally to come their rescue in times of distress or calamity. Leaders chosen by the people will not be afraid of the citizenry. This is not happening in Nigeria today because the elections are seen to be manipulated, thus not reflected the people’s choices. This has resulted in suspicions and mistrust by the electorate. Faulty elections give room for the wrong persons to be in government and this in turn leads to poor governance. The fault however doesn’t stop at the leadership. The citizenry are also guilty in the sense that they allow themselves to be manipulated through monetary inducement. The reason for this behavior is because the citizenry are uniformed on the enormous powers of their votes. For example, the citizenry do not appreciate that the offices of state and national assembly are very powerful. While these houses can remove a governor or the president through impeachment, governors and the president cannot remove any member of these chambers! As powerful as the state and the national assembly are, it is only the citizenry the determine who goes to these chambers and it is the people who decide who comes back at elections. In other words, elected officials must carry out the wishes of the state and national assemblies which in turn must also serve the wishes of the people. What is currently happening is that the governance is being run as if the people don’t matter. They are only remembered during elections when indomie and maggi are freely mad available. The legislative arms are in control of the executive, while the judiciary is compromised. MY VOTE, MY PRIDE therefore seeks to address the short coming of free and fair elections by ensuring that the people are allowed to choose and effect changes through their votes. Such votes so casted must be protected peacefully to ensure that the elections held are credible. Incidentally this is what the electoral law is all about. This way, the leaders so elected will be respected and obeyed by the people and such leaders so chosen will equally respect and carry out the wishes of the people. MY VOTE, MY PRIDE is a nongovernmental organization which is nonpartisan, non-sectional and non-religious. Its governing body comprises Muslims and Christians of high integrity with nationalistic commitment. It will be funded by the ordinary people through voluntary contributions. That way, their mindsets will change from relying on politicians to fund elections that of them bearing the cost in nurturing and protecting their votes to ensure that only their chosen leaders are allowed to govern them. The electoral law stipulates that results of all elections held at election centers must be compiled, signed by the electoral officers and the political party agents and PASTED/DISPLAYED at that election centers for the people to see and know which party won and by how many votes. This important provision of the electoral law is what the people should take maximum advantage of. MY VOTE, MY PRIDE is also taking advantage of technology by capturing/photographing such displayed result sheet so pasted with their specialized handset and transmitted through the internet to their central computers for the whole world to have instant access to such data. The citizenry will also be encouraged to snap such result sheets on their handset. It is our belief that such efforts will go a long way in complementing governments’ efforts in ensuring free fair and transparent elections. Our activities will be nationalistic, transparent, nonpartisan, non- religious and knowledge based. Our aim is to cover the whole country and it is hoped that the people irrespective of tribe, religion or geopolitical location will contribute their widow’s mite as the extent of our coverage will be determined by their level of contributions. Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to invite you to the demonstration of how MY VOTE, MY PRIDE will peacefully and by the grace of god contribute its quota to ensuring a credible election in Nigeria through technology. It is our conviction that with the advent of the social media that provides instant access to global information at the click of the computer, patriotic people should come together to provide credible flat form failing which the citizenry could be misguided by mischief makers. Finally I wish to thank all those Muslims and Christians who have started sending in their donations to this noble project. We are encouraged by your responses in cash and in kind. Once more you very much and god bless. http://www.myvotemypride.com/all-posts/my-vote-my-pride-initiative-the-way-forward/ |
Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State on Monday morning appeared before the seven- member panel set up by the Chief Judge, Suleiman Dikko. The panel is investigating the 16-count charges of impeachment levelled against him by the State Assembly. Mr. Al-Makura, who arrived the sitting at about 9.12 a.m. waited for over 30 minutes for the panel members headed by Yusuf Usman to arrive. The members were yet to arrive as at the time of this report. The governor arrived with a large entourage of political appointees and a member of the state assembly representing Keffi-East, Othman Bala Adam (All Progressives Congress, APC). Twenty (Peoples Democratic Party members) of the 24-member Assembly are believed to be in support of the impeachment of Mr. Al-Makura, who is a member of the APC. https://m.premiumtimesng.com/?p=165994?p=165994?p=165994?p=165994 |
Six of the 20 members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) including Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Musa Ahmed Mohammed, who signed the impeachment notice against Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, are facing recall by their constituents over allegations that they did not consult properly before embarking on the exercise. The other five members are: the deputy speaker, Elisha Agwadu, Mohammed Baba Ibaku, Abdulkarim Usman, Francis Orogu and Mohammed Sidi Bako. In two of the constituencies, namely Nasarawa-Central, and Udege/Loko, where the speaker and Ibaku are representing, respectively, people have for the past two weeks been collecting signatures from constituents. But the other constituencies have just commenced the exercise, Daily Trust gathered. In Nasarawa-Central, the constituents have already set up a central committee headed by the chairman of Nasarawa Local Government Area, Tijjani Ahmed, who is coordinating the recall process with three sub-committees. A former council chairman, Barrister Mohammed Sani Bawa is heading the Nasarawa-Central sub- committee, the state Commissioner of Agriculture, Danladi Madaki, is heading the sub-committee for Udege, while Alhaji Ibrahim Gambo and Nuhu Abubakar, a former councillor is heading the sub- committee for Loko axis. The council chairman, Tijjani Ahmed, told Daily Trust yesterday that there are also seven sub- committees for the seven wards of Nasarawa- Central, just as there are 44 sub-committees set up to coordinate signatories in the 44 polling units of the constituency. “We are on course and signatures have started coming in from constituents against the two lawmakers representing the two constituencies of Nasarawa Local Government,” Ahmed said. The state commissioner of Agriculture, Madaki told Daily Trust that constituents are “falling over each other to append their signatures against Ibaku,” just as Sani Bawa said they are getting signatures from Angwan Dalatu polling unit, where the speaker voted in 2011. But Ibaku, who confirmed he is aware of the process initiated to commence his recall, said he is not bothered by the development. “I was voted by 43,500 PDP members of my constituency in 2011. My opponent polled only 13,000. If the 43,500 people who elected me say they want me out; I will be bothered. If disgruntled APC members in their microscopic minority are initiating a recall against me, I will be sleeping and waiting for 90 days for our people to go a referendum to decide who is more popular in Udege/Loko,” he said. When contacted, the speaker’s spokesman, Tanko Ibrahim, said: “Frankly speaking, I have no comments.” Francis Orogu, on his part, confirmed the moves against him but insisted that the process is not one to give him sleepless nights. “I have 100 per cent support from my constituents to go ahead with the impeachment against the governor. I consulted my people and they gave me the go ahead. Today, they are promising me an automatic ticket because I did them proud by appending my signature to the impeachment notice,” he said. This is just as Lanze Kassim Ujah, a legislative aide to Usman of Wamba, said he is aware of plans by the minority APC members in his area to recall his boss, but added: “My boss consulted his constituents and got their approval. He is still in touch with his constituents”. The deputy speaker, Elisha Agwandu said he got the mandate of a majority PDP constituent to represent the area in the state assembly, just as he insisted that he had the approval of the electorate to sign the impeachment notice against the governor. Sidi Bako could not be reached at press time. http://dailytrust.com.ng/daily/top-stories/30771-impeachment-nasarawa-speaker-5-others-face-recall |
The National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.) on Thursday said contrary to the claims by some individuals, the Federal Government was not behind the last week’s attack on the convoy of a former military leader, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). He said as far back as February, the leader of the Boko Haram sect, Shekau, had threatened Buhari and some others, calling them infidels that must be dealt with. Dasuki spoke while fielding questions from State House correspondents after the Council of State meeting during which the issue of the attack on Buhari came up for discussion. He said, “We said something about the attack on Buhari and Sheik Dahiru Bauchi. There was a threat as far back as February this year issued by Shekau calling them infidel by names and positions saying that they were in trouble and they were going to see. “Well, the government was not responsible, and if you say that the government was responsible in the case of General Buhari, why don’t you say the same in the case of Sheik Dahiru Bauchi? “We said this not because we had facts but because it is what sells the paper. That is the most unfortunate thing. And we want to say that it was not only General Buhari, there were others mentioned too.” On the fears that the Boko Haram sect might have started turning the schoolgirls abducted from Chibok, Borno State to female suicide bombers, Dasuki said the government did not have control over the girls since they were still in captivity. www.punchng.com/news/fg-not-behind-attack-on-buhari-nsa-2/ |

—————————— An explosion has occurred in central Kaduna killing at least 10 people, a witness has said. The blast occurred Wednesday afternoon along Isa Kaita road which leads to the popular Murtala Square. A witness said the explosion is believed to have been targeted at the convoy a prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, who was on his way to the Square. The witness, Hassan Mohammed, told PREMIUM TIMES that the bomb, concealed in a red Volkswagen golf car parked by the road side, was detonated as the cleric’s convoy drove past. The sheikh escaped unhurt, the witness said. “As I speak to you now, I can see many bodies on the ground,” Mr. Mohammed said. The police could not be immediately reached. But the witness said security and emergency officials have arrived at the scene evacuating the victims of the blast. The blast is the second targeting Mr. Bauchi in Kaduna State. In June, an explosion occurred near his house injuring one person. The Sheikh is a known critic of the extremist Boko Haram sect. It is however not clear whether the group is responsible for the attack. Details later… |

A former Nigeria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations, Alhaji Maitama Sule, on Monday called on Nigerians to put the nation’s interest above their personal interest. The ex-diplomat added that he had written a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan and the governors, warning of what he called disastrous consequences if the prevailing trend in the country was not arrested. Sule made the call when the Arewa Youth Development Foundation paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Kano. The elder statesman said, “That was what our founding fathers like Zik, Obafemi Awolowo, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sardauna, Aminu Kano and Tarka did. “These leaders belonged to different political parties, tribes and religion, but they lived and worked together because the unity of the country was their main interest. “About two weeks ago, I wrote to the Chairman of Northern Governors Forum and his colleagues. I also wrote to Mr President about the situation in the country. “I did point it out that if we do not put a stop to personal interests, we will have disastrous consequences in this country. I have written the letter and I will follow it up. “We have never had it so bad but what I believe is that we have to get together and tell one another the truth, let us agree to accommodate our differences, be patient and put Nigeria above our own interest.” Sule, who is the Danmasani of Kano, however, urged youths to desist from acts capable of causing chaos in the country as they had no other country but Nigeria. The Leader of the group, Mr Ashiru Sharif, said the members were in Sule’s residence to express their concern with what was happening in the country. http://www.punchng.com/news/maitama-sule-writes-jonathan-warns-of-disastrous-consequences/ |
The Chairman, Organisation and Mobilisation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West, Mr. Buruji Kashamu, has said his organisation, Omoilu Foundation, distributed 66,000 litres of kerosene to residents of Osun State. Kashamu, who spoke in Ede on Sunday through the Managing Director of the Foundation, Mr. Samson Onasile, just before the start of the distribution, said the gesture was not to induce voters but to assist the people. He added that an additional 66,000 litres of kerosene would arrive in Osogbo this week for distribution. Onasile said the group was not involved in any fraudulent activity which could disenfranchise voters in Osun State contrary to the claim of the ruling All Progressives Congress. He explained that politicians started making overtures to the foundation having realised that members of the foundation who were benefitting from the magnanimity of Kashamu had electoral value. Onasile said, “The Omoilu Foundation gave out 750 vehicles and 1,000 motorcycles in 2006. The chairman (Kashamu) at times distributes recharge cards to members without asking them to do anything for him. “We are distributing kerosene today to assist our members in the state (Osun State). “Before you are registered as a member of the foundation, you are requested to obtain a form and we get your data. We ask them to come with their voter cards to know that they registered. “We encourage them to register so that they would be able to vote and we ask them to bring their cards to know that they truly registered and got their cards.” According to him residents of Ondo State and other states which are not preparing for elections are also registering to become members of Omoilu Foundation. Onasile said the allegation that the foundation was an occult group was a lie and was aimed at discrediting its chairman. “We have registered 140,000 members for Omoilu Foundation in Osun State as of today and many are still obtaining our forms. “We are distributing 66,000 litres today and before Tuesday additional 66,000 would arrive for distribution. The kegs for the kerosene is branded PDP of course and the chairman is a leader of the PDP and would work for the interest of the party. “Omoilu Foundation is not an occult group like some politicians are saying. We are interested in the welfare of our members,” he added. It will be recalled that Governor Rauf Aregbesola has asked the people of the state to shun registering with the foundation while claiming the group was an occult one. The Director, Communication Research and Strategy, Osun APC, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, described the distribution of kerosene as a ploy to hoodwink the citizenry. Oyatomi said, “Why do you need to collect people’s voters’ cards if not for fraudulent purposes? http://www.punchng.com/news/kashamu-distributes-66000-litres-of-kerosene-to-osun-residents/ |

The Peoples Democratic Party has said the impeached Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, is at liberty to return from the All Progressives Congress to the ruling party. Nyako, along with the governors of Rivers, Kano, Kwara and Niger states, had defected from the PDP, November last year, after several months as members of a faction of the party known as the New PDP . The Publicity Secretary of the Lagos chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, Taofik Gani, speaking in a telephone interview with SUNDAY PUNCH , accused the opposition party of contaminating PDP chiefs and governors. He said, “Gov. Nyako used to be a thorough person until he had reason to go against President Jonathan and eventually defected from PDP. However, let me commend him for having the moral guts to absolve the President from this impeachment process “He has absolved Jonathan, and I think that is good enough. At the same time, there may be a subtle way of him trying to retrace his tracks back to PDP and I will advise that he comes and does that openly. He should come as quickly as possible and return to his party. According to Gani, Adamawa is a predominantly PDP state and it was tactless of the embattled governor to have defected from the PDP. The PDP spokesperson expressed disappointment that members of the PDP in top positions had defected. He said, “It is unfortunate that our governors and other chieftains of the PDP do not realise that they are infected and corrupted by these tendencies in APC. Anytime a member of the PDP, who has been well behaved, joins these tendencies in APC, the member becomes another thing. “He becomes recalcitrant and politically naïve, so much so that their attitudes and characters even go against patriotism.” He further backed the impeachment process that led to Nyako’s removal, saying it was in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended. He added that the constitution was clear about impeachable allegations. According to him, if indeed Nyako is popular in Adamawa, the whole of Adamawa would have protested in his support. http://www.punchng.com/news/nyako-can-return-to-us-pdp/ |
UEFA has announced their disciplinary rules where players on a yellow card will have their bookings voided following the quarterfinal stages of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. In a statement posted on UEFA’s official website , it read, “Following a recommendation by the UEFA Club Competitions Committee - in order to implement in UEFA club competitions a rule which is already in force in the UEFA European Football Championship - the Emergency Panel decided that, as of this season, all yellow cards from the beginning of the group stage will expire on completion of the quarter-finals.” "Bookings will therefore not be carried forward to the semi-finals." Last year, Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso was forced to miss the Champions League final after picking up his third yellow card in Real’s semi- final tie against Bayern Munich. However, he will still be unavailable to play in Real Madrid’s UEFA Super Cup tie against Sevilla due to his ban for his celebration on the pitch during the Champions League final last season. Former Manchester United legends Roy Keane and Paul Scholes had suffered the same scenario when they had to sit out of the 1999 Champions League final. http://m.sportskeeda.com/football/uefa-announce-new-disciplinary-rules-yellow-cards |

No lives were lost. Gunmen suspected to be hired assassins, in the early hours of Thursday, stormed the home of Jeremiah Useni, a former Abuja minister. Mr. Useni was, however, not at his Langtang north Local Government Area, Plateau State home, when the gunmen came. According to witnesses, the suspects shot at the building about 48 times. Mr. Useni, a member of the on-going National Conference, in a telephone interview with journalists on Thursday evening, confirmed the incident. The retired general said no lives were lost. “I was not there myself, but I was told of the incident. No one was killed, but I will later today (Thursday) visit the scene to see things for myself,” he said. The Police Public Relation Officer, PPRO, of the Plateau State command, Abuh Emmanuel, also confirmed the incident to journalists in Jos. According to Mr. Abuh, the alleged assassins were repelled by the police in the area. “The suspects shot sporadically at the building, but no one was killed. Police have brought the situation under control,” he said. However, residents of the area said it was a group of vigilantes and youth who chased away the suspected assassins. One of the witnesses, who identified himself as Nanpon, claimed to no longer be afraid of the sound of guns shots, as it had become routine in the area. He alleged that members of the Special Taskforce, STF, posted there often shot sporadically in the air for no just cause. Mr. Nanpon also alleged that members of the STF harassed people in the area. “Soldiers in our area sometimes enter our houses and beat up people even when no one has committed an offence. So when the attackers came, we thought it was soldiers doing their usual business of shooting in the air,” he said. http://m.premiumtimesng.com/news/165118-gunmen-invade-jeremiah-usenis-home.html |
If Jonathan meets with Malala, a foreigner, it will go a long way in confirming wide growing suspicion that his government regards its own citizens with disdain …to meet with GEJ Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani school girl who became a global icon after being shot by the Taliban is believed to be in Nigeria. Malala, who is a UN Ambassador arrived last night and might be in audience with the President and some parents of the abducted Chibok girls during the week. A vocal advocate of the #bringbackourgirls campaign, Malala is believed to be visiting for two reasons; to drum up support for the $100m Safe Schools Initiative launched at the last World Economic Forum (WEF) and show support for the Chibok girls. Two things stand out from her visit, she arrived a day before her birthday and she might be meeting with Goodluck Jonathan who has refused to meet with the #bringbackourgirls campaigners; a movement that his government has tagged a “ franchise.” If Jonathan meets with Malala, a foreigner and teenager, it will go a long way in confirming wide growing suspicion that his government regards its own citizens with disdain since he has refused to meet with Oby Ekwesili, a former minister and Maryam Uwais, a first class legal brain. http://www.sabinews.com/all-news/malala-arrives-nigeria-chibok-girls-onyema-dike/ |
