You can apply for visa at the embassy: meaning you will go to embassy in Abuja, submit all the required documents and if you are found suitable will be issued visa and you can come by atleast one-way ticket. This option is relatively cheaper becos you can come with one-way ticket provided you are issued a visa. It may be lengthy process but you may wish to experience the joy of visiting embassy.


You may get visa on arrival: this is comparably slightly expensive because you must come with two-way ticket. But you don’t need to worry about embassy. It’s usually processed within 1-5 days. This also may change at anytime based on the immigration rules/comes with varying regulations. For now it’s easiest way if you can afford it.

Ask the university. I was at a meeting with the immigration official they asked for original documents but if your university issued you a signed and stamped cover letter it may work but I don’t know. Ensure you ask your university directly.

A federal courtroom in Newark, New Jersey, on Wednesday morning will feature a rare sight — a U.S. senator facing felony charges.

The legal saga of Robert Menendez — a lengthy, leak-filled criminal probe followed by two-plus years of legal wrangling since his indictment while Menendez kept his seat — has huge implications for the Senate and New Jersey politics. If Menendez is convicted, there will be battles over who will replace the 63-year-old Democrat, in both the state and, potentially, the Senate. In a 52-48 Senate controlled by Republicans, every vote is immensely valuable.

The case has huge implications for the Justice Department as well. The last senator to be tried on criminal charges — the late GOP Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska — had his conviction set aside after it was discovered that federal prosecutors withheld evidence that could have helped Stevens’ defense. And a key witness against Stevens had a romantic relationship with an FBI agent. That stunning reversal dealt a major blow to the prestige of DOJ’s Public Integrity Section, which pursues corrupt lawmakers.

Here’s a primer on the trial:

The investigation:

Menendez’s relationship with Dr. Salomon Melgen, a close friend and donor, first came under scrutiny in early 2013 after media reports revealed that the New Jersey Democrat was flying on Melgen’s plane to the doctor’s “luxurious” villa in the Dominican Republic. Menendez did not report any of the flights, a potential violation of Senate rules and federal law. When the press disclosed the reports, Menendez cut Melgen a $58,000 check to cover the cost of the flights, but federal prosecutors say there were additional unreported trips.

Menendez intervened on Melgen’s behalf with the Department of Health and Human Services to resolve a $9 million Medicare billing dispute, dragging in then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Marilyn Tavenner.

Menendez also sought the State Department’s help over a $500 million port security contract Melgen had with the Dominican Republic. Menendez even assisted with visas for several of Melgen’s foreign girlfriends, according to prosecutors.

Melgen and his family members donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions directly to Menendez’s reelection campaign, as well as to a Democratic super PAC that backed Menendez’s 2012 reelection effort.


The charges:

Menendez and Melgen were indicted in April 2015 on a slew of federal corruption charges related to the senator’s alleged acceptance of hundreds of thousands of dollars in improper gifts and campaign contributions as bribes in exchange for using his office to help Melgen. These include eight counts of bribery, three counts of honest services fraud, one count of conspiracy, and one count of violating the Travel Act. Menendez was also charged with one count of making false statements.

Melgen has already been convicted in a multimillion dollar Medicare fraud case in Florida and is awaiting sentencing. Prosecutors may seek as much as 30 years in prison for Melgen in that case, a potential life sentence for the 62-year-old ophthalmologist.

The Justice Department alleges that the Menendez-Melgen relationship turned criminal shortly after the New Jersey Democrat became a senator and went on for nearly seven years.

“The defendants’ bribery scheme began shortly after Menendez’s elevation to the Senate in 2006, when Melgen began a pattern of treating Menendez to weekend and weeklong getaways in the Dominican Republic that would continue for the next several years,” prosecutors said in a recent court filing. “For the first four years of the corruption scheme, the all-expense paid trips Melgen provided often included free roundtrip flights on Melgen’s private jet for Menendez and his various guests. When the doctor’s private jet was unavailable, Melgen supplied equally luxurious travel for the Senator.”

In return for Melgen’s gifts and campaign donations, Menendez reportedly used his Senate office to help the Florida doctor.

“Although Menendez did not pay Melgen back for the lavish gifts in money, he did pay him back using the currency of his Senate office to take official action to benefit the South Florida doctor,” prosecutors wrote. “Email exchanges between the defendants, their agents, and officials from Executive Branch agencies will show Menendez’s considerable efforts to pressure the Executive Branch on Melgen’s behalf. And testimony from the agency officials over whom he exerted that pressure will illuminate the relentlessness of those efforts.”

Menendez is the first senator charged with bribery since the late Sen. Harrison Williams, another New Jersey Democrat, was convicted in 1981 in the Abscam case. The Williams case could come into play again if Menendez is found guilty because of the timing of his ultimate resignation.

If these things don't match up with the ability to make a $10,000 purchase, you will be questioned and audited. During the audit, you will have to prove how you were able to spend that type of money in one go. This applies to any and everyone. Anyone that's able to spend more then $10,000 at once almost always hires lawyers and Financial Advisers certified by an accredited board. This 'financial team' answers audits and fights authorities and investigations while you spend you money as you wish.

If you look at every major company in the US, they have entire offices and buildings dedicated to staffing lawyers and auditors because they're under investigation 24/7. Even small businesses (business that make under $1 million USD annually) have advisors and lawyers dedicated to making it possible for them to make necessary large purposes.


What is ideal in the US system is if you put all of your cash in their banks and borrow from those banks when you need money, against the amount you have. This is the #1 way to keep auditors, the IRS, and various investigative departments away from you because you're no longer a threat to the economy, and there's a paper trail on your spending.

While those in Nigeria are confused and believe this is a DSS/EFCC style 'hunt', the US is very careful about who has money, and how they're spending it in the country, and everyone operating at the billion dollar level is at constant battle with the Congress, Senate, and Internal Revenue Service.

Most businesses in the US opt to keep the powers off their back by funding the campaigns of various politicians, buying ads with major media houses, and funneling earnings overseas or into charity.

This is just a mere misunderstanding between you people, because from my understanding Brazil things are complicated, someone can get his/her PR withing a month and you see another person struggling to get his own for years, I am talking with experience because I live here. I will not deny you talking about getting your passport within a year rather than ask how you go about it because it might be due to your location. Here in Sao Paulo, they will tell you in Lapa to stay for 2-5yrs before they collect passport application from you and in other states it's a different things...for example when I submitted my PR, Sao Paulo rejected it and I traveled to Parana to do it, they received it and processed for 2 weeks and email me to come for my PR, it's still a shock to many in Sao Paulo till date because I was new here when I have my PR. So when someone tells me about a law in Brazil, I listen to the person and hear his story out because it's crazy here.

And let me add this, to apply for passport in Brazil depends on the state policia federal you re located. In Sao Paulo if it's marriage you have to wait for 2-5yrs (from what they told me in Lapa back in 2017) and in State of Parana it's just a year either marriage or child birth (updated last year)

Processing of PR in SP do take time because of the traffic, we have other countries applying too not just Nigeria and if your application is stuck, you might not receive your PR for years because amendment is hard for them but in other states it's easier even in SP interior

From the law to get a passport you must past the Celpe-bras exam (Portuguese language text like TOEFL) or you have a certificate of Portuguese class ( not all policia federal accept this)

And about people that has lived here for years without having PR or Passport, I need to clear this most Nigerians don't mind about papers or don't know how to go about it due to the freedom we have here, no one will disturb you and Brazil hardly deport people. So most don't even care they just keep working or doing their things, I have a friend here that has gave birth since 2017 and have not even care to apply for PR, but his name is registered as the father of the baby.

Lastly because of the language barrier many people don't even know how to go about applying for PR, some has qualified for PR and still using protocol to live here.

So the laws are crazy here, so you guys should take a chill pill

My advice for you guys planning to come here is just to prepare for anything because it's tough here and anything can happen.
