princeuk21: you just said it large manufacturing and export because importation is truly killing our Naira and that is also a sign of underdevelopement.
And can you imagine we have the export market already but just not taking advantage of it…..I mean we can export product cheaper to other parts of African than Europeans and Asians….Maybe if we can seriously prioritize our energy sector then we can finally develop our country and tax base can increase….Until then Naira will struggle to survive….

petikal: Thanks man. I'll wait and keep fingers crossed. What CBN Governor is pushing for is actually good and practiced in developed nations, but many factors must be in place. On one hand, I'd like to get a higher TB rate, but I'd also like to see a stronger Naira and low inflation - which is indicative of a thriving economy. If the latter is achieved, it'll be good for everyone. Fingers crossed.
It will be good if all the indices are real!…..We definitely need to move towards large manufacturing and exports before we can achieve a low interest rates in Nigeria which is not visible for now…..

petikal: Angelo, indeed FGN bonds could be another alternative, although the rates are only slightly better (13%) for a longer tenor - 2 years minimum. We saw same rate for TBills last year on 1yr tenor. So you reckon after elections, TBill rates will improve? Factoring current inflation rate at 8.5%, it just doesn't make sense to keep it so low.
I don't think you should hope so much on T.Bills as the CBN Gov. is bent on reducing rates so as to spur lending but yeah it doesn't make any sense because of inflation and the falling naira….But 13% for Bond for a year is good if you are the waiting type like me…But on T.Bill rates, its 60% possible that the guy will change is stand on it as its policy plans to cut down the rate is very unrealistic and can put pressure on his job….So its better to invest in T.Bills and manage the current rates for now…And after Feb. you can review your options…..I believe there will be need for money/investment come 2015…..

petikal: I've been following this thread for many months, and finally decided to join Nairaland mostly because of it. Great exchange of knowledge!

So, I'm trying to decide on continuing rolling over my TBill investments or switch to physical assets (Land).

To the gurus, with the current downward trend on interest rates, wouldn't you say purchasing lands - with the intention of selling after a period - is a better investment? Of course, one has to bear in mind the risk factor.
The reason why you invested your fund in T.Bills is because you prefer a very safe investment…..Land might be profitable if you buy with logic but you can't predict the outcome as several circumstances could affect your investment in a land which is not possible in fixed income securities…Even though the interest is going down you should watch out because land in Nigeria is a very complicated asset…From falsification of documents which is very essential before you can dispose the asset to unaware litigation…..I will tell you that land is not a safe asset because from the process of buying a land you could loose your fund and if you are lucky to buy a well documented land, location could affect the return on that land except if the land is for your own use….This is the time to reflect on various possibilities but if you still want to preserve your fund cautiously and you don't need it for now,you should invest in Bond….The return can't go down because the money is actually used for projects financing and is completely risk free and I mean FGN Bond but you should wait till after the election just to be sure there is a government….I am going to do the same…There is no need to fret over the current rates which I believe is due to the personal interest of the new CBN Gov and is not going to support the current economic realities on ground…So far you have the fund to invest, more fixed income opportunities will come your way especially from Feb……Below is the link to the government agency issuing Federal Government Bonds….By that time we will change this thread to T.Bills/Bond…..lol…But very similar instruments but different economic purpose….

Instantly your money should be in your account….But all in all its good to always give instruction to the central customer care or head office concerning any investment because most times branches of banks are so irresponsible that they always suppress customers deposit/investment.Contact your bank immediately!

ernie4life: I like all the write ups above, personally am not a fan of equities, unless it's foreign equities. my reasons are simple the fund managers can swing the funds in other to favour a particular firm/ ccorporation. Mutal funds on the other hand are not bad especially the ones invested on Tbills and bonds. the new product launched by stanbic IBTC has nice prospects, I was at a meeting where investment experts where analysing it, it looks juicy if the play by the rules.

Tbills are safe but the don't appeal that much to me, bonds are my favourite.

with the current trend in the economy the best bet if you ask me is a diversification. capital market is still going down.

Take it from people who bought into mutual fund IBTC is overhyped as per return on investment and the only mutual fund that I can rely on is the Zenith Fund.I bought both and I started with IBTC with high hopes but after studying the way they operate,I understand that IBTC is in for exploitation.Dont based your interest to the name of the product as we know that most of this fund managers invest your money in something else. And as you said Bond is the most attractive but I just want the 2015 elections to be over and I will go for 3yrs bond…..T.Bills is not going to be good investment under the current cbn management…..You can still get some bond at 13%….

Chillisauce: I wanted to go for zenith but my supposed bank officer that has never met me asked me to come to the bank. I told her it's not possible cos of my location. I wanted to transfer from another bank to theirs ,then book for an investment and I don't have online access with them. She said she can't do it. Imagine. My own money kwa. Later she called that anyway, I should transfer it but when I want to withdraw, she must see me in person. I didn't even answer her. That was the end of my zenith story . Na about 2k kuku remain for the account. grin

I wonder how they can't make somethings online friendly in this 2014. That was how I ended up with stanbic.
There is nothing like account officer….Its bank workers cartel of a kind and they are not helping you…They will never support you for anything good except if it will benefit them….I had account officers everywhere but sometimes they talk and act like they are against you,I even send money to some of them to motivate them….Can you believe they knew about investment that can earn me as high as 14% per annum and they shut me down then I decided to take things up with the head office myself and right now I am free of their games….When your account officer of any branch is not talking sense just write to the head office or the central customer care….You will be surprise how your branch will act fast on whatever you need….

Chillisauce: I use their stanbic asset management. I only forward my profit from the TB from other banks to them. Just like you said for little money. Even their money market is not encouraging. Their equity is even reducing as at April no single 10kobo have I received rather it keeps going down.
Imagine!I left mine there because I don't like the structure of their product….They seem to want to profit more than you…I bought Equity and Ethical……I can't even check my account online for some months now….But its all experience and I have made profits from learning from my experience…..

tolutweety: Angelo82.: Thanks for the enlightening piece on mutual funds.
how many years are we talking about in the quoted?

I might just divert my cash to bonds,i seem to be losing confidence in tbills weekly with the drop in rates.
As at sept.30 2013(5yrs statement) from account statement zenith income fund returned 50% and by now judging from the price it must be up to 60% but I didn't check and I don't intend to but I am pleased with the pricing of the fund as there is no fluctuation….

ernie4life: angelo82 what's your take on mutual funds?
and what do you think about stanbic ibtc ETI which was just launched? am asking you because I like your take on investment issues, any other person who has a good knowledge on what I asked is free to air there views
If your investment is from 100k-1M,I think mutual fund is not a bad idea especially if you participate from the beginning…..But its not good for big fund because its more of benefit to the fund than you….Standbic is a reputable asset manager as we all know but I am not satisfied with the pricing of their fund, very little dividend and return on investment is not satisfactory….I bought Zenith fund from the inception and right now the fund has returned over 50% profit even though I left it there…..If Stanbic can structure a fund management service for you in a portfolio of fixed income instruments,I think you should go for it but I am not interested with this mutual fund thing because at the end of the day when you do the calculation you are not going to make a good return on your investment and the fund manager will definitely profit more…..I am saying all these because I have investment with them and can you believe that I don't even care because they are not encouraging and it will be stupid if you pump huge amount of money there.Stanbic reputation is good but I don't like their products but if they can structure a portfolio management product for you and if you are satisfied then go ahead….Never allow any asset manager to mix your portfolio with equity…..I like Zenith Capital but just don't have much to do with them for now…..Dont be moved with the different kind of attractive products they are rolling out….They are looking for money and the lesson I learnt from 2008 till now is to look out for myself….

I wish I could get a good answer.
I hate to say this but you are a fool…..You must know historically black existed before your so called white friends…..And don't deceive yourself, white people are institutionalized criminals……They can't live or survive without cheating and they can't endure and in a situation whereby they have to go through hard time someone will die for it….They are very good at wickedness and glorifying them….The only problem with black people is we are not united at all and that has exposed us and we have become scapegoat of crimes…..Even a small country in Europe commits more crimes than the whole of Africa….Killing is nothing for them especially if you are not one of them……If European men will have to go through what Nigerian men go through before sleeping with a woman then rape will be very high….Sorry to the few good ones among them but in criminality they are above us and we are completely beneath them…..I have lived among them for 15yrs and I wonder most times why our government exposed us to this people…..The enemy of a black man everywhere is first European men and the second is the Arab men…..Think about it….And when you talk about giving and taking, most african give without taking and whites can never give without taking…..Nothing is free from white people,is all business….They can never be saint…..

sunboy: Now I can see the USA is determined to destroy this country. Just yesterday the military was complaining about the USA blocking their ways that we were blacklisted to buy arms because of human rights violations, I didn't really believed it because we can always buy from Russia, Iran, China and even India who won't wait a second to sell. Now I'm reading about human right publishing this shi.t now I believed whatever the military excuse of laundering such cash. This mu.mu human right people no see Israel on Palestine soil committing anything, the USA Guatemala bay ? The Russian KGB method which was considered the toughest? The Indians torture was sef especially their police. What the mess does the USA stands to gain from a divided or destroyed Nigeria ?
I also strongly believe that I.diot Australian old man is a plant by the western world who's volunteering to talk sh.it he wasn't paid to do. All these doesn't just add up ?
Bottom line: either USA like it or not, petrodollar is going for good, then they can start surviving on their technology and become their dream world largest oil exporter. I'm beginning to dislike that country this days and their puppets media must especially BBC who never publish any good news from the military but look for lope holes. Like the same USA would have brought peace to Liberia suppose Nigeria army didn't single handedly did.
I'm vex.ed
Where were you when someone brought our attention to the killing of suspects in SARS custody?……Torture is realistic in Nigeria and must be stopped completely……Maybe Americans has bad intentions but Torturing citizens is very bad…..

Godside: thanxs . Please how do knw if the successful bid rate wil higher or lower . Nd what rate wil b beta . When you say loss the bid , please like wat level of loss is that , i mean in cash cuz i want to start wit 500k. Thnx again
When you loose a bid in the primary market,it means you can't buy tbills and your bank will refund your money to you but you won't loose a cent of your money.Ask your bank to advice you what rate you should bid and on your own try to lower it a bit so as to succeed, the result of the auction will show if your bid is successful or not….For example if your bank advice you to bid at 10.4% for 90days tbills.you should bid at 10.2% just to be sure..

Yes,you can buy from primary market and all you need to do is to approach your bank. But you will have to be sure of your bid rate because if the successful bid rate is higher than your rate then you automatically loose the bid.The best is to set a bid rate that is slightly lower to the successful bid.Yes due to new policy of cbn about custodial of tbills you will be charged 0.05% as custodial fee and your bank will charge you little commission as tbills commission.

Even though the KGIF rate is attractive,I still believe is for investors with little capital because its no brainer to move fund from a bank into mutual fund like KGIF….Investors with 10M and above should invest more in fixed income products that is well regulated and backed by government….I believe the rate is going up soon because inflation is going up again and the cbn is worried….

Chillisauce: You mean the federal government bond? I guess it's like 10yr period. I don't trust Nigerian government to last that long. Yes, I analyseriskvery well. And I'm always on point cheesy
Yeah I mean FGN Bond and they have 3,5,7 and 10 years series of Bond and the rates are good too but even at that before you can get involve in any Bond you must wait until after 2015 election to see how stable the government is…..You don't have to fear because money to pay the bond is always included in the budget and backed by law….Its good to be very careful when you are going to invest your money,so you need to scrutinize everything very well. Can you believe that I was offered 12.5% by Investment One but I don't feel good with it and I went for 10% with a bank that I am very familiar with….So risk is a serious factor to consider in anything but FGN Bond is secure but the political factor is the problem for investors right now….

By the time I move some finance to another platform like KGIF, they will remember to impose one policy to reduce interest rate.

I'm never lucky in this kind of things.
I think Bond is the only way out especially for investors that can invest for longer duration.

Even Union Bank internet banking is better than GTB,I tried to move my accounts to GTB due to overhyping by Nigerians but thank God I didn't do it.I have only 500k which was used to open account with them and I will just leave it like that until when am in Nigeria to close that account. Its very difficult for them to treat simple online issues even when you authorize your own blood relation to act on your behalf, they insist on something else.Different from other Nigerian banks and I just can't trust them with servicing my accounts.

nitrogen: For where? It's your bank that is pulling all these stunts. Trust me, I know what I am saying, naija financial market (fixed income and equities) is part of my terrain so to speak.
One thing you don't know whether stunt or not, they actually sell Tbills to you because when I checked with my custodial concerning the Bills that I bought in Aug.,they have the physical bills with them.So secondary markets exist and I am sure no matter how much you have.If banks buy with 250M….What are they suppose to do with it?….Selling it to clients will be a good deal as they will make more and quick money…..But that market is bad now because official rate is down and bank rate is nothing which means the official rate will eventually go up since everyone is now ready to bid from the primary market….
