Otherwise don't repeat the falsehood. It was that easy to guarantee free education when the number of kids in school was not much. Once the population rose as time went on, fees had to be paid, somehow.
And even then government schools nationwide are in a mess, because the money is, and has never been enough.(and yes, Tinubu was not spectacular in that regard). Is the government revenue at the level of what it was when Awolowo and the LOBOO governors provided free education to every child, plus books in the 1980s?

subsidywise18: In the USA, people do not earn enough money to put their children through college. That's why most Americans take out loans to pay for their children's colleges, and even the kids hustle for things like scholarships and grants over there.(Like Rotimi has done).
And the loans are not free money. Once you get a job, you start paying back the loans. On top of your other expenses. And your children too have the same issue.
(When Obama became president of the USA, one of the first things he did was to open savings account for his 2 daughters and start saving a huge chunk of his salary as president there so that they could go to college stress free. Had he lost, his daughters would have had to take loans like other Americans.)
Some Americans do other things like side hustles, buying life insurance for their children, etc, to pay for their kids education in college.
Even then....I once heard of an American medical doctor with debts of $150000 from medical school alone. That#s par the course. Can you please provide credible reference for the bold part above. Thanks. |

Or what is your point? Something that the old Western region had in 1950s and the LOBOO states in the 1980s before Bubu scattered everything with his senseless coup that is the only successful one against democratically elected LGA councilors & chairmen, state lawmakers & governors, senators, representatives and president? Unlike governors Tinubu, Kwankwaso, Obi and co who are just rogues instead of employing teachers & other workers to provide free education for all children. Ovaiegbe: More than half the world's children who are not being educated are in Nigeria, the country's government has said.
Acknowledging the scale of the problem the education ministry's permanent secretary Adamu Hussaini said it was "sad to note" that Nigeria had 10.5 million children out of school.
This is the first time senior officials have admitted the size of the problem.
Cultural factors have been blamed but critics point to a lack of money going to publicly funded schools.
The UN's children's agency, Unicef, has been campaigning on this issue as well as a number of other groups.
On a visit to the country last week, education activist Malala Yousafzai met acting president Yemi Osinbajo and asked him to declare what she called "an education state of emergency in Nigeria".
Mr Hussaini said those most affected were girls, street children and the children of nomadic groups and added that economic prosperity can only be achieved with an "inclusive and functional education system".
But BBC Hausa editor Jimeh Saleh says the failure in the education system is due to a lack of government funding, rather than any cultural factors as suggested by the ministry.
"Government funded schools in Nigeria have practically collapsed over the years because of poor funding leaving children from poor homes with nowhere to go but the streets," he says.
Unicef estimates that 60% of Nigerian children not attending school live in the north of the country.

The Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Tuesday said the first phase of the state Blue Light Rail project would be completed by June this year(2013).
He expressed confidence that Lagosians would start enjoying the services of the lrail project immediately.
The first phase would run from Marina and terminated at Okokomaiko area in Ojo Local Government.

The governor, who inaugurated the trackwork of the blue light rail at Alaba Suru, Coker-Agunda Local Council Development Area, said the level of work on the road and those of the National Theatre and Alaba-Mile 2 rail stations, would ensure early completion
He said, “In order to finish the project, the contractor did not go on vacation during the festive period. This will ensure that the project is delivered on time for the use of Lagosians.
“The first section of this rail, which started from National Theatre, Orile-Iganmu to Mile 2 Bus Stop, would be fully completed with the tracks laid.
“Construction work will continue on the project from Orile-Iganmu to Marina, the expansion work on the road from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko will also be intensified.

Aside from open defecation, another common practice is public urination, which takes place virtually everywhere and practiced by all classes of people residing in the state including elite, illiterates, male, female, young and old.

The lack of state-owned pipe-borne water in the homes of Lagos residents has continued to be a source of concern, a non-profit group, Corporate Accountability and Public Advocacy Africa (CAPPA) has said.
At a press event to mark this year’s World Water Day, the group said its monitoring team’s visit to state-owned waterworks showed that most of them are not operational.
The group said the waterworks it visited include the ones at Maryland, Mushin, Ikorodu, Obalende, Agbowa, Onikan, Ikoyi, and Amuwo Odofin.
Only the one in Ikoyi is producing water, according to CAPPA.

WHILE the Federal Government continues to proliferate the country with dams, it is such an irony that a state like Lagos, with its massive, constant boast of being a megacity, cannot provide its residents, thereby forcing the bulk of them to take solace in the arms of water boreholes.
At regular intervals, the two major waterworks in the state, the Adiyan, and Iju get grounded leading to the non-availability of water. In April and May last year, for instance, they both produce less than 10% of their installed capacity.
As of today, Eti-Osa, Apapa, Victoria Island, Badagry, Ibeju Lekki, Surulere, Ikorodu, Agege, Ojo, Mushin Kosofe, and most locations in the state are without access to clean water. Consequently, millions of residents now rely on boreholes, rivers, rainwater, as well as comprised wells for their water needs.
On its website, the LWC claims that it has a total installed water production capacity of 210 million gallons per day (MGD), which is far lower than the current estimated daily water demand of 540 million gallons per day. Also, its plan to produce 745 million gallons per day by the year 2020 through the Lagos Water Supply Master Plan fell flat with the actual number of citizens having access to potable water dropping, rather than increasing 11 years after the launch of the master plan. A senior staff of LWC, who preferred anonymity said that at present, its agency only supplies water to Lekki, parts of Ikoyi, Victoria Island (VI), Ojodu, Iju, and some parts of Ikotun.
https://guardian.ng/sunday-magazine/potable-water-still-luxury-23-years-after-return-of-democracy/ >>> >>> Lawmaker scores Lagos Water Corporation low A Lagos State lawmaker, Mr Saka Fafunmi, on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction at the performance of the state Water Corporation. Fafunmi, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), said in Ikeja that the corporation had not been able to justify statutory allocations to it.The lawmaker, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 1 at the assembly, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He said that the corporation had the capacity to generate much fund internally through water rates but had relied solely on government funding because of poor performance. '' Anyone that is using water will be willing to pay for it; the corporation has not been giving us water. "Is there any new community that Water Corporation has given water? People depend on boreholes; even government estates have industrial boreholes. "Why do we keep pumping money into an agency that does not give us the desired results?'' he asked. He noted that the Adiyan Waterworks was located at Ifako-Ijaiye, where many of the residents had resorted to digging boreholes as a means of getting water.''A lot of people are falling sick because they don't drink clean water. ''In the same compound, where you have sewage, is where you have a borehole. ''There is no way you can manage the sewage that it will not leak and pollute the water; everyone drinking such is drinking contaminated water,'' he said. The lawmaker urged the corporation to increase water reticulation and supply to residents.
