To get licensed as a lawyer, you need to apply to the NCA, get assigned some courses and write the exams. The exams are written a few times annually. You can write all in one sitting if you are a genius. If you pass and get your NCA certificate, you then apply to the Law Society of Ontario or the province where you want to practice. The Bar exams-Barrister and Solicitor’s-are written 3 times a year. Not sure if this has increased or decreased because of the pandemic-induced changes.

If you pass the bar exams, you can either apply for Articling or get an exemption as I did. Of course, you will called to the bar. What you do after that is up to you.

Those who love transactional practice areas and with good experience can join banks and corporations as In-house Counsels or join law firms-big, medium and small.

Networking will determine how fast you get good opportunities to practice after your call.

I agree. Life, success and opportunities are almost always relative. Another key influence on what you do and get is the immigration pathway that brought you to Canada. If you came through the Express Entry with your PR or Spousal Sponsorship for PR/Work Permit, your challenges will be fewer. If you came as a student, the challenges will be higher to transition to PR. If you came as a Refugee Claimant, the challenges will be higher and the opportunities will be fewer and lower initially. These things affect so much greatly.

People talk about the US and the UK. Most of the Nigerians I studied with, often from rich families, are in the UK doing security jobs, working in Morrison’s, ASDA and MacDonald’s. I am proud of them but it’s what they can get.

Unlike the UK where Canary Wharf and big city jobs are for the Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, LSE lots, many Nigerians working in big Canadian banks and holding prime positions studied in Ife, Awka, Osogbo, Anyigba, Zaria and Abeokuta. Nothing more! �

Yes, some Nigerians are teachers and nurses in the UK and the US. How much do Nigerian nurses and teachers make in the UK? 26-34k annually. Nigerian professors in UK universities make 50-75k annually. I have a sister teaching in a high school in Alabama with a PhD in education leadership. Her income is less than $50k annually.

Professors in Canada, starting with the lowest rank of Assistant Professor earns between $137-150k. Full professors earn between $160-350k. If you want to check do the next thing:

Google the Ontario Sunshine List where the government mandates that people making salaries of $100k above be displayed. For instance, check for Professor Obi Okafor of Osgoode Law School. I will delete this in few minutes!�

Do you live here? The Nigerian community in Canada is largely new. The mass migration to Canada began after 2014/2015. It’s too early to do the intense comparative analysis you are doing, but I know the countries to highlight what I know.

Cold….Alberta is colder than Ontario. Winter is largely Winter in the Western world.

Go to the UK, 80-90% of Nigerians who moved there in the last 10 years still live in small rented houses. I lived in a community in Canada where 14 of us bought our homes within 2 years of landing.

I lived in the UK studying from UG to PhD level. I know the US well too. While you can make more money in the US, healthcare, childcare and other costs and cultural violence makes it an expensive place to live and raise kids.

I am a prime professional who practiced in firms before setting up mine.

I know bankers who left Naija towards the end of last year who are holding down 2-3 jobs (enabled by the pandemic’s remote work) and making 20-30k monthly. I mean these are close friends.

While the traditional professions have rigid licensing processes in every country to test for determination, it is normal. When we went to Nigeria for the law school, even professors of law and accomplished lawyers from the US, UK, Canada et al, had to do Bar 1 with us. They did and some are accomplished politicians and lawyers in Nigeria today.

I know 2 SANs who did their accreditation and bar exams, and are now doing Articling in Toronto. It’s normal.

Yes, doctors like lawyers and all do same too. You either want it enough to soldier through or you stay in your comfort zone. If you push through, the rewards are huge. I have many lawyer colleagues making over $130k and some are immigration panel members (judges) within 2-3 years. I know 2 very close Nigerian professors of law in Canadian universities , they came in as students, who make over $300k.

Canada is today’s heaven. Lazy and unfocused people will promote harsh relativism as the general experience. But it’s crap!

If you come to Canada legally and have your PR, you can settle in 1-2 years and do great. Of course, lawyers and doctors may face a slower transition, but it’s worth it.

Bankers, IT professionals, business analysts among others should get great jobs within 2-4 months, if properly guided, and earn between $70-120k. I have seen tens of close friends go through it and doing great!

As per loneliness, it’s demand and supply. More black/Naija women who are single crowd the Naija community populated by men who largely have families before leaving Nigeria. Yes, professional Naija men are almost always married few years after university. If they use potential husbands to play boyfriend koso, who they go blame? Naija ladies can go back home and find their kind. It’s easier than deluding themselves that they will find Oyibo men here. Those who go home to look for husbands and lovers do find!

I do agree with you that Priests need permissions and dispensations from their Bishops to carry out some functions.

All Catholic priests need the permission of their Bishops for EVERYTHING-because they share in the priesthood of Christ through them.

The Catholic Bishops that I know are unlikely to permit a priest to serve as a Best man.

If he decides to do it without his Bishop’s permission, he will be reported by other priests and punished.

How did I know? I was in the Major seminary from a diocese and reported to a Bishop for 6 years.

People start somewhere. Some of those drivers have great jobs.

For example, the Naija couple who have the leading bakery around the GTA were doing Uber and working in Walmart less than 2 years ago. Today, they get $1-2m annually. They are close to us.

A close friend of mine left UniBen as a law lecturer, and did warehouse jobs for over 6 years while doing another LLM and a PhD in Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. He finished and he is a professor in a major university near Toronto taking home $170k. He lives in a home he bought for peanuts now worth $1m and has a son finishing a PhD on $70k scholarship.

Another left Naija as a lawyer working for the EFCC and started here working in a prison. Her hubby was unemployed for 2 years. Today she has a law firm and her hubby is a senior manager with a large corporation.

Another a State Counsel in Naija, hustled a bit and now running a promising law firm here.

2 of the people I mentioned are active on Nairaland, helping many people.

My close friend does Uber with his GMC. But his day job is a Project Co-ordinator earning $6-10k monthly in a major engineering company.

2 friends do food deliveries but are AML Managers in Scotia and TD banks earning close to $10k monthly.

Another friend, a Ghanaian, is a police officer working on the Canadian National Intelligence team taking home $140k annually, but he does food deliveries for extra cash most evenings.

I have done food deliveries. Did that stop me from having a $1m home within 2 years in Canada?

4 of my friends came after us to Canada 2-3 years ago. We used to live in the same compound. Today they are managers in big banks and financial firms.

I can go on and on. All of these people own their own homes, drive exotic cars and came to Canada less than 3-4 years ago.

Let me give you examples of earnings between the UK and Canada.

In the UK, qualified teachers earn between £27,000-34, 000. In Ontario, Canada, they earn $CAD 90-110, 000.

Nurses in Canada earn about two-three times more than their UK counterparts.

Doctors in many places in Canada earn over $350,000. In the UK, it’s less than £70,000.

In my years in the UK, many Naija UK graduates and students were happy working in ASDA, Morrison’s, Sainsbury’s, doing security jobs, carer e.t.c. These include MSC, LLM and PhD holders from great UK universities.

Since, I came to Canada. I have watched tens of Nigerians come from banks and the streets in many local places in Naija to start bank jobs...I am yet to see ANY except those just coming in today and refugee claimants do the jobs that Naija people in the UK do and celebrate.

AML. Some got the jobs before doing the CAMS certification or whatever you guys call it.

Your strategy should be to join the WhatsApp groups for each of the banks’ alumni in Canada. It’s the sure path to getting jobs as many of them are now managers in critical units and departments of various financial institutions in Canada.

7 of my friends who came here as bankers got great jobs in banks within 4 months. It’s a paradise for Naija bankers and many Naija bankers are Managers of strategic units in many financial institutions and banks here.

Yes, but I still did the conversions and the average is approximately twice what UK professionals earn. I'm coming as an entrepreneur not to be a professional but I still want to have a high paying job - it mustn't be from a professional job, while I build my business. A friend started doing call centre job almost immediately after entering Canada with FedEx. I'm more of an entrepreneur.

About PhD holders doing security jobs in the UK, that is sad but it is way better than almost anything Nigeria has to offer.

Your point is very clear and well taken. Canada has better job opportunities than UK on average and I believe it applys to entrepreneurship too. Canada also shares border with USA, the second biggest market in the world. The opportunities are endless.

I will focus on getting into Canada through tourism. I know I should be able to survive better there than UK. I'll UK too though and I need to leave this country.

I am just laying the cards bare for you as I will do for a brother or sister. I did those jobs in the UK from LLB to a PhD. Security jobs with Rossi and Systematic in Knightsbridge(Versace, Gucci), banks, council houses and Westfield. I even worked at many food outlets at the Emirates and Wembley stadia...Porter job at the Queen’s palace and hospitals. They paid well and I won’t look down of them.

Just saying Canada ensures that most PRs from Nigeria get jobs that are a thousand times better than what UK offer.

I didn’t address your entrepreneurial plans because you are not coming in as one as it will require anywhere from $500k-1m to come in COMFORTABLY under any of the programs in that line. I am not wrong to say you don’t have that.

You have to come in through one of the routes I mentioned. Those are your choices and opportunities.
