Abuja Embassy July 12th 2021

My interview lasted about 3 minutes. Here we go:

Massive palls of grey and black clouds hovered above the beautiful city of Abuja, a clear indication that Rain was warming up in the sidelines of the heavens, as I hopped into the waiting Bolt taxi which I had ordered a while ago. It was my first time in Abuja, I should say. As we drove from my lodge to the embassy, I admired the smoothness of the broad roads, how it gleamed in the distance, how it reminds me of the head of Papa Ajasco of Wale Adenuga production, and the many towering, foggy and greeny hills which rose like the back of an elephant from different corners of the city.

I arrived the premises of the embassy around 6.40am but we were not allowed in until it was about past seven. As expected, there was an heavy presence of people I would, I beg your pardon, call "embassy rats", those people who try to sell you water while you are in the midst of an ocean. Those who would say, Bros you go need passport o. Bros make we staple your form. Bros this. Bros that. But I ignored them all, except for a woman, I would later find her name to be Rose, who volunteered to take custody of my phone at zero cost. I rewarded her handsomely later, anyways.

Once the order came that we could proceed into the interview venue, I joined other applicants, mostly students, into the interview venue. We waited for a long time before a Nigerian man came into the waiting lobby to begin what seemed to me as a confirmation of appointments and documents. To save the reader's time, I went through other protocols before my turn to meet the VO, to meet with destiny eventually came. The place was window 8 and sitted there was a pretty, young, and stern-looking white lady who was just dishing out rejections like Akara.

VO: Good morning

Me: Good morning ma

VO: Pass me your i-20 and passport then place your hands on the scanner for the biometric capture.

Me: Okay ma. (I passed the documents to her and placed my hands on the scanner)

VO: I see that you're going for your doctorate in Sociology at MSU

ME: That's correct.

VO: Tell me about the research you plan to conduct

Me: My research is in the area of cybercrime and access to economic opportunities. Precisely, under the supervision of Prof XYZ I will be investigating the correlation between access to economic opportunities and youth involvement in cybercrime.
VO: Okay. Alright (kept typing into the system). Is your research going to focus on Nigeria?

ME: (VO give me through pass, I no gock am) Yes. Nigeria has had several issues with cybercrime in recent times. My research will be focused on Nigeria.

VO: Tell me about your plans after your studies

Me: I plan to return to Nigeria to take up a full-time lecturing job. I've always wanted to become a professor of Sociology. I also plan to publish academic papers that would interrogate and proffer solutions to the challenges of Cybercrime in Nigeria.

VO: Okay. So you plan to become an academic?

Me: Yes.

VO: Okay. I will be approving your visa. (Hands me the white paper and begin to talk about Covid-19 protocols bla bla bla. My ear don already block like ghetto soakaway. Lol

Me: Collects white paper with thanksgiving in my heart and left smiling.

NB: Take your case to God in prayers even if you're an atheist. The issuance of visa at the embassy, in my opinion, is 30% hardwork and 70% grace, if you like call it luck. However, this is not a liberty to relax. Work hard and also pray hard. I will advise whoever is attending the interview to be straightforward with answers. Only say what you are asked to minimize the risk of saying things that might potentially be used against you by the VO. Also try as much as possible to make your responses unique.

SPECIAL APPRECIATION
I am grateful to my friend Seun in the US who helped me throughout this visa application process. I am also thankful to my friend Babs who never gave up on me. Of course, I also thank all the beautiful people here whose transcripts and inputs have helped me tremendously. Big shout out to Fairheart who gave his expert opinion on my last rejection and encouraged me to apply again. To those who are still dreaming, don't give up. Cheers!

Visa Approved
Lagos Consulate
Alot of blue papers flying across board on that day.
I arrive lagos on Sunday all the hotels that was recommended here to me where fully booked that (it was showering so everywhere is abit cold) evening. Finally got one by 9pm.

My interview experience below:

She did more of typing/reading than asking me questions.

VO: Good morning and welcome, give me your 1-20/passport
Me: Good morning, here is it.
VO: Typed/read for about 1-2minutes, She then ask why do you want to study this course in this (She never mentioned the name of the school) school.
Me: I want to study this course in this school because of the research work of Professor James Madison which I believe can be easily transferred to case studies in the region where I am from in Nigeria (She looked at me with surprised). His research at the moment is on solute transport modeling of contaminant in groundwater, I believe the skills and knowledge I will acquire from working with him on this project will help me address the issue of groundwater contamination we are currently facing. The region where I am from, we are faced with a range of challenges one of which is groundwater contamination.
VO: Typed/read for another 1-2 minutes then she ask what will you do with this course?.
Me: I want to set up my own Environmental Consulting Firm to work with Federal Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in ensuring that there is access to clean water for everyone in the region.
VO: Typed/read for another 1-2 minutes then she ask I see you have a deficit ($10, 560), who is paying?
Me: My friend who is based in Canada (She looked at me)
VO: Is he a Canadian?
VO: No
VO: What is your relationship with him?
Me: He is my friend from childhood, we grew up in the same neighborhood. He is passionate about my plans of establishing my own consulting firm.
VO: What does he do
Me: He work with an SSS organization in Canada.
VO: Typed/read for another 1-2 minutes then she ask where do you work?
Me: I work with DYZ Services; we are into a range of work that include groundwater investigation and borehole development.
VO: Gave me the white paper and said I should follow the instructions on the paper.

Note:
What I notice on that day is that alot of persons are largely unprepared for the interview. There was this guy who built up his case very well and then the VO ask him where is the bank statement of his sponsor, he said he didn't bring it and that he had used it to apply for his 1-20 initial. There where others I can't mention here.

My interview wasn't as smooth as it is up there, but I ensured that I nailed all the points. After preparations pray to the being you serve. I prayed to God, because in my own case I cannot take God out of the scheme of thing (not by my power).

I just thought I should share this here.

VISA APPROVED !

This is my transcript as promised .Let me give a little background.I contacted an immigration lawyer who advised I cancel my appointment at the lagos embassy and apply in Accra,Ghana instead.Ive lived in Ghana for a while and only moved back recently and I hold both passports(Main reason I contacted a lawyer for the sakes of home ties). My sponsor also lives in Ghana and I’ve had my education and some work there.
I’m just grateful to God because it’s been 2 years working on this.

The embassy in Ghana is very very calm and no anyhowness like you’ll see at Walter carrington before entering and nobody outside asking to arrange your papers .The embassy is currently prioritizing only students so all the folks I saw there were students

Only 3 V.O available and no sitting from entering the visa hall until you leave so process was very fast

Stood in line for biometrics and continued to interview area

When it was my turn
Me:Good morning
V.O: Good morning. Please pass me your documents

V.O : Please put your hand on the scanner

V.O : What are your travel plans
Me: I’m traveling to the USA for my masters in information systems and business analytics

V.O: Who is paying for your trip
Me: My father

V.O : (Looks up at me)What does he do?
Me: (V.O Kept making eye contact from time to time)He’s a wholesale importer of clothes from South Korea ,China and the UK.He owns and runs a hotel and has rental residential and commercial properties some of which are occupied by banks

V.O : (After typing and looking at his screen for a long time)Are you married ?
Me: No

V.O : Do you have any children
Me: No please

V.O : (sticks a sticker behind my passport gives me a small piece of white paper )You can follow the instructions on there to pick up your passport at the circled time tomorrow .Come with a government issued ID
Me:Thank you

Just like that no document asked even though other before me were asked to show transcripts and school certificates.SEVIS receipt was not a requirement for the interview here but I had it .

All in all I only witnessed two denials, one from a lady who had a G.A but had been denied before and another guy who claimed his aunt will pay his $60k deficit .Another lady who claimed her friend in the USA will help her pay a deficit of $50k was approved. What they say about making eye contact is true.Look them straight in the eye even when they’re not paying attention to you.
Be confident in your answers (Practice in a mirror with your mask on)and go very well prepared and practice speaking audibly if your voice is low tone.Dress in a way that’ll help your confidence but don’t over do it.
Don’t offer any documents or unwanted information unless you’re asked .Fill your DS-160 yourself and go over it multiple times and know exactly what you’ve put down.
Don’t worry about denials before you ,your case is different and pray if you believe in it.

Program: Msc Sociology

I give glory to the Almighty God for the grace and favour I received.
The questions were few. I believe it God's grace. And I really appreciate everyone who has dropped transcripts as well as one info or the the other that guided my preparation.
Thank you all
My appointment was for 11:15am. But I got to the embassy by 8am. Many things happened but no time to explain all that now.

My transcript below

VO: Good morning
Me: Good morning ma'am
VO: Where are you going
Me: I'm going to Mississippi State University. (She started typing for about 30seconds or more)
VO: What are going to do?
Me: I'm going for my masters degree in Sociology.
VO: What was your undergraduate course?
Me: Sociology and Anthropology at Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife.
VO: What's your intent?
Me: (I became fussy a bit, so I answered poorly) My intent, I want to study sociology at the masters level because I believe it will make a me better sociologist. (I knew that wasn't even to my taste). Then she cut in.
VO: Wait, where do you work?
Me: I work as a data analyst at xyz. (I thought I'd lost it that point, but I still kept my eye contact firm with much less tensed facial expression)
VO: What's your intent? She repeated
Me: My intent is to go for my PhD in sociology after this course so that I can pick up teaching appointment at my alma mater.
VO: What was your undergraduate degree? She asked again
Me: Sociology and Anthropology at Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife.
VO: Ok, congratulations, I will be issuing your visa. She reached for the white paper, circled the pick up location and passed my documents to me. Your issued visa will be ready in five business days... I didn't hear the remaining part again jare.

I packed my things and left. Meanwhile she mistakenly dropped my passport together with documents, but excitement didn't let it occur to me that I should call her attention to that. I sha packed everything and left. It was the security man I greeted well on my way out that called my attention to the error. He guided me back inside and another guard led me back to the window where I was attended to. Then I explained to the VO that she mistakenly returned my passport, I had to show her my white paper for her to believe. She oh thank you, took my passport and dropped into the trail.

The joy that flooded my heart was like the deep water that surrounds the embassy.

I wish you all well I'm your interviews.

VO: why are you going to America?
Me: for my masters degree at Florida A&M university

VO. How many schools did you apply to?
Me: 3 universities.

VO: Why this university?
Me: It's one of the leading universities in Florida known for its excellence in computer information systems with highly intelligent professors in the department.
They have an outstanding faculty reputation.
The tuition fee and cost of living is less Compared to the other universities.

VO: sorry, you do not qualify.
