For the whole country to belong to one party and South East stands out means South East is really United and wants to separate itself from Nigeria, that's why Nigeria is afraid of giving us a referendum to vote ourselves out of Nigeria cause they know, it will be 95%/5% in favour of Biafra separation, we South Easterners I are more United than any region, I [s]we don't want to belong to one Nigeria we want [/s]out Read your constitution Zik and Ironsi signed up to and you would not, always shouting referendum and Biafra, better go ask gidgiddy and horsepower how to get that. They didn't wait for Nigeria to help them deal with it. You need to agree that customs have failed if we are looking to Benin to do their jobs for us Benin dealt with dangote cement even when the Nigerian government looked away, Nigeria had decided to deal with Benin so their government should look away. It takes two to tango. The US with all her technology, wealth and all still has to collaborate with Mexico because she can't do it alone without the support of Mexico as per safe guarding her borders. |

Debaiz: You’re not talking about sugar and cement again?
Stop blabbing and accept you were ignorant.
You’re just grasping at conjectures.
Dufil didn’t start producing in nigeria in 1996 same way five alive wasn’t producing anything in nigeria in and MTN wasn’t producing recharge cards in nigeria until OBJ stopped all of them from importing.
I ask you a question. Name 10 items on that list that nigeria do not produce presently.
If you were too young when those decisions were made, don’t come here questioning people who weren’t. Instead ask questions.
In the next 10-20years, young ones would come to you with this kind of your lame argument that rice was never banned in nigeria. They will come with the same excuse the western economists is programming into your heads that protectionism don’t help any industry. All because they want to keep pushing their products into the country. When that time comes, it would be easier for you to defend ur argument than it is for me today because we have internet today as against 15years ago.
Yes we have imported spaghetti today same way we now have imported sugar but the difference is that they can’t really compete with our local sugar industry let alone kill it.
The whole point of protectionism is to protect up and coming industry and shield them away from unfavorable competition from foreign established industries. Once the industry is established, the import restriction is removed to drive down price through competition.
The problem with Dangote cement was that the corrupt govt instead of protecting small cement companies from going under when dangote was coming up, they allied dangote to buy them up thereby creating a monopoly rather than local compettition. Kudos, your brain has enough oil and all the nuts very intact. You've only said what I've been trying to tell that guy |

Agboriotejoye: An increase in production should be followed by a reduction in price. This is because supply will increase and force price down. This has not been the case with rice so... Your rice farmers are either lying or sabotaging the economy which makes them no different from smugglers. I never said foreign rice was cheaper and I'm sure you know it has never been cheaper except you know nothing abt what you're arguing about.
The quality story is very simple. Stone, grain size and taste are different. No need denying facts. I've eaten local rice several times too so stop acting as if you're the only person who eats it.
As I've said noodles and spaghetti do not have the same trajectory as rice so I don't still get ur comparison. The dude arguing abt ban of noodles himself attested dat dufil used to import it before moving to producing locally. So, I don't see how it can be compared to rice that is being produced locally and competing with foreign rice. Hope you get the gist. You're not a Nigerian with such statement. You don't visit our open markets to assert this. Most Nigerians know you're lying. Beg in the normal form and we may forgive but stop testing our resolve, even your president and ministers have not been having it easy. Do we care is the question? If you have info abt that pls share Those products you mentioned were not banned and neither was there any reported smuggling. Just import, pay the normal tariffs and move on. |

Agboriotejoye: Ok. Now tell me if local production has improved since the border closure. The evidence says otherwise. Know that rice is not the only goods imported through the Benin port. It's because the Nigerian ports are inefficient that goods have to go through Benin. That said, rice is smuggled through our borders because our customs is compromised. Note that imported rice has NEVER been cheaper than local rice. It's the quality and the quantity that made it desirable than local rice.
Again, noodles were never produced locally before dufil came you have also said. So all these talk of tariff and border closure to encourage local production of noodles does not arise Yes not only rice, contraband products like poultry and fish were equally imported through Benin and the government looked the other way and contravening the existing ECOWAS protocols they agreed to. Rice production has increased and would continue to increase as attested to farmers on ground. Give us the total production of rice in 2018 and by October 2019 and let's compare. At a point you said foreign rice was cheaper and now saying it hasn't been cheaper, your quality story doesn't add up in the markets and Nigerians can attest to it. Several have been eating local rice before the border closure and thinking it was foreign till date. Noodles and spags were not smuggled before now, they were duly imported and all tariffs paid which made other companies to come into the business and made prices low. |

Debaiz: Wait are you saying importation of cement, noodles and spaghetti was not banned? I’m forced to ask how old are you?
Nobody produces in an import dependent country. Even dangote was protected by the military for importing sugar before he he started producing. There’s no way any industry can survive without protection from the govt. obj had to ban importation of SA made recharge cards to promote local production.
Dufil didn’t start producing in nigeria. They started with importation. Get your facts right and stop promoting your ignorance. Bless you Bro |

Agboriotejoye: That's not true. Noodles and spaghetti were never expensive in Nigeria. I remember 2minutes noodles then. It was cheap. The reason dufil which is not even Nigerian and owns the largest share of the market came to Nigeria is the ready market and easy access to raw materials. That's what I'm saying though. You can encourage local production without closing borders. The tariff factor is one such example. Another is the farmers. If Nigeria can grow rice in sufficient quantity all year round, major rice mills will be encouraged to move down here. Nigeria's local rice farming is majorly at subsistence level. That's what govt needs to do. Set a target for local production and meet it. Not all dis audio rice You can increase local production by closing the border especially after several warnings of going against the layed down rules on smuggling and the FG increased tariffs, why didn't the importers import through Nigeria? Of course they wanted the cheaper tariffs Benin offered so that they can smuggle their goods in. Noodles and spags were duly imported through our ports and appropriate tariffs charged which made other companies to come into the business and started production We just started, this is November and it started in late August, it's not magic, we need time |

You should ask urself why dufil, dangote and flour mill started producing in Nigeria without any prodding from anybody and why we have to ban foreign rice before you can get local rice on a large scale according to your analysis. That's where the cure from ur ignorance will start There was no time those noodles and spags were smuggled into Nigeria, they were imported and all tariffs paid which made them more expensive and encouraged dufil, dangote etc to come in. |

The government will pay your hospital bills when you have appendix abi.... By the time the border is open most nigerians would have diverted thier diet to other food to conpliment rice... Then rice farmers begin to sell thier rice farms and they start exporting thier rice to other african countries who would reject it...
We take babaric laws and accept it like the foolish government. over here as a student i cant offord the rice and it keep increasing What stop the government to give warnings before the closure or setting all necessary tools around every state before the closure so Nigerians wont feel it when the border's are closed ... Instead he closed it barbarically to favour his kindsmen up north... This already tells after a while probably after December maybe feb the borders will be opened because it was all planed to be The border had been shut during OBJ's time because of this same smuggling but reopened after begging and promise to repent from same countries, Nigeria had warned them on several occasions and all they do is promise, suspend operation and after 1-2 weeks resume operations with the smugglers. Buhari decided to close the border because neighbouring countries were distorting our agricultural policies by encouraging smuggling into Nigeria despite knowing that it negates the ECOWAS protocols we all signed up to. Buhari wanted to protect our farmers and encourage them into more production so that we can have food security, that was why he increased tariffs on rice importation and warned Benin, Niger and Cameroon over the ongoing smuggling on several occasions. When they refused to listen and act, the FG acted in the interest if Nigeria and Nigerians. |

Agboriotejoye: You're correct on farmers forming political groups. It's not a bad thing but you should then realise that you can't politicise quality. It can't happen. If RIPAN claimed the onset of border closure that rice will sell for 13k and we are now buying for 18k, we should call them out for deceiving us not hail them. The problem is we don't want to put in the effort as a country but just wish to force rice production into existence. It can't happen like that. You can agree with me that if foreign rice were allowed in, within a week, the price of rice will drop drastically even though it is of better quality. You should now ask why a product of higher quality is cheaper than that of lower quality. It's simply the availability. There's nothing you can use to cover this fact!! If local rice is available in very large quantity, I can assure you the price will drop drastically. Note that we're in harvesting season presently. What happens in January/February when dry season farming which is not done at same level as rainy season sets in? Nice points though some I no gree o, you know that for now demand has outstripped supply and prices are bound to increase but with time and as more farmers go into production, supply and demand would equal and supply could outstrip demand which would force the price down. Do you realize that the FG in care of the CBN is now helping interested people who want to set up mills, Coscharis Mill is one of the beneficiaries. So the FG is doing something about it. Allowing for rice imports may negate some gains made already. I totally disagree that local rice is of lower quality, I don't know your location but where I stay, you have different brands and varieties, from the unmilled stone filled, starchy dusty one with some husk to the milled stone free and well polished rice that very many people mistake for foreign rice and not as expensive as you're stating it. Do you realize that some Nigerians rebag those well polished local rice and sell as foreign rice since some Nigerians still insist foreign is best? For their mind dem dey chop foreign rice not knowing na pure local rice dem dey on top. They'd still buy it at the price of foreign instead of local |

Agboriotejoye: Stop labeling people criminals just cause they don't agree with you. Not everything about rice is smuggling. There's smuggling yes but dats because customs failed at their jobs. The question is why should Nigerians be paying for customs failure. BTW, I'm not against local rice, I used to farm it myself before i moved on to other things and I can tell you there's been no time local rice was not selling well. It can't compete with foreign rice due to quality not price. There has always been a market for it. This artificial scarcity is only robbing Nigerians to pay RIPAN who have become more of a political group lately as you can see from the op. The govt is just creating millionaires at the expense of ordinary Nigerians. You made valuable points and so sorry about labeling you a smuggler anyway. Do you realize that farmers in different countries like Japan, Switzerland, the EU etc are all very strong political groups trying to protect their interest? Their governments protect and support them because they equally want their countries to be food secured. Local rice has different brands and variety depending on your pocket, the stoned unmilled and the stone free milled and polished rice are all there so it's all about your choice and pocket. |
