shup up there!!! There is no mention of dirt in the article. Go to WHO website and see it for yourself. The problem is with ships emitting bad carbon from poorly refined fuel...also heavy construction due to increase in population.

The only mention of waste is the "waste management system not up to international standard"

If you want keep lying to yourself that the east is a bad place. We and the rest of the world know the truth

Shut up. If the air you breath is not clean, it mesns it's dirty.

Raker300 and all concerned..stop giving the jobless troll attention as we all know the basis of the assessment and even the WHO confirmed that the result from Onitsha is not reliable in the same report, so why do you worry about anything? Leave the thread for him to continue breaking his head.
You mind showing us where WHO asserted that their report is not reliable?

Do you even need who to tell you what's already known and what the governor of the state admitted and confirmed already?

You are obviously suffering from not knowing the meaning of dirt. What's not clean including the air you breath is dirt and it doesn't have to be garbage.

And t talking about dirt and garbage, Peter Obi admitted that his state was extremely dirty with garbage.

In the far-flung areas of Alau in Konduga Local Government Area which TheBrief visited, an intimidating agricultural masterpiece basks in the blazing sun fully functional, with 4 massive Centre Pivot Irrigation systems of two 60 hectares and another two 35 hectares of farmlands.

The 1st stage of the Agricultural rejuvenation of Borno, has already produced a bountiful harvest of Irish potatoes, with its first ever cultivation on the N/Eastern state’s soil. Producing about 140 50Kg bags in total, the system has proven to be a success, even at this test stage.

With N20bn spent so far on equipment and on other aspects of the scheme, the state’s efforts have remained unknown to the world, besides the handful of persons directly involved.

Dili remarked that for fear of sabotage, from the previous administration, the state opted to keep its exploits secret, but is now ready to open it to the world, to attract patronage.

According to the state government, as IDPs return to their homes, a small plantation of mango trees, poultry, mobile ponds and oil mills will be donated to 100-200 women from the beginning.

The proceeds from their farms will be bought by the government, to be used in the school feeding programme.

With the next stage of the all year farming scheme set to commence next month, Borno is becoming an agricultural force to be reckoned with again.

IDPs from nearby camps in Maiduguri, have already been trained and employed to work on the farms, with a couple of seasoned farmers among them owning farms in the area where the equipment are currently being used, allowing them to benefit directly from the scheme.

Women and children have been employed to plant cashew trees, and are paid per output. (The going rate is, N300 for every 25 seedlings tended to).

Although Boko Haram still remains a thorn in the flesh that orchestrates attacks, Borno’s prospects are bright.

Its plans of returning all those affected by the scourge of insurgency back to their homes and equipped with a viable means of livelihood is quite the site. A step in the right direction, The Home of Peace is ready to embrace and live up to its slogan

The European Union (EU) Senior Expert on Sanitation, Tope Babalobi, says that 1.7 million people in Ekiti State practice open defecation. The Nation reports that Babalola said this during a breakfast programme on the Ekiti Television (EKTV), Daybreak Nigeria yesterday January 26th.
Babalobi, who is also the National Chairman of Water and Sanitation Network, urged the residents of the state to maintain a clean environment to avoid falling victim of Lassa fever..
“Rodents and rats have no business coming to your house if it is clean. Eateries, restaurants, schools, shops, markets must prioritise sanitation. If you manage your waste very well, these diseases will be far. This is a challenge to us as individuals in our homes and business premises,” he said

What's going on in Anambra?
Politics › Onitsha Is The ‘most Polluted’ City In The World. WHO by aresa(op): 11:37pm On May 19, 2016
https://media.today.ng/main/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/onitsha_refuse-dump-690x450.jpg

Onitsha, a city in Anambra state, is the most polluted in the world, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

In a report on Global Urban Ambient Air Pollution, the organisation said Onitsha has about 30 times more than the recommended small and fine particulate matter (PM).

Kaduna was listed 5th, while Aba and Umuahia – both in Abia state – came 6th and 16th respectively, leaving with Nigeria the highest number among the 20 most polluted cities in the world.

WHO says in the past two years, it has monitored 3000 cities in 103 countries and has found that globally, air pollution, has risen by eight per cent in the last five years.

WHO measured the level of pollution by the amount of “small and fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) during the five-year period of 2008-2013.

“PM10 and PM2.5 include pollutants such as sulfate, nitrates and black carbon, which penetrate deep into the lungs and into the cardiovascular system,” the report read.

The rise in air pollution has caused a rise in “the risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic and acute respiratory diseases, including asthma, increases for the people who live in them”.

WHO says people in low income countries are the worst hit by air pollution.

“More than 80% of people living in urban areas that monitor air pollution are exposed to air quality levels that exceed WHO limits,” the organisation said.

“While all regions of the world are affected, populations in low-income cities are the most impacted. According to the latest urban air quality database, 98% of cities in low- and middle income countries with more than 100 000 inhabitants do not meet WHO air quality guidelines. However, in high-income countries, that percentage decreases to 56%.

Education › UI, ABU To Get Off-grid Solar Power Plants. by aresa(op): 11:00pm On May 19, 2016
https://cdn.guardian.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Ahmadu-Bello-University-1062x598.jpg

Collaboration between Nigeria and Germany is underway for the construction of off-grid solar power plants for the University of Ibadan and the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The groundbreaking ceremony for the solar power plants is to take place before the end of next month in Ibadan, Oyo State.

While playing host to German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Michael Zenner, Education Minister, Malam Adamu Adamu, hinted that the University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University solar power plants would serve as pilot projects. If successful, the project would be replicated in all other federal universities in the country.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, Adamu promised to render all necessary assistance to ensure the success of the projects.

Zenner, who was accompanied on the visit by the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka, told the minister that the projects would not only provide electricity to the university community, but will also facilitate the training of young engineers on renewable energy technology.

Zenner pointed out that “the project is very important because the university will become independent from other power sources, the money saved can be used for research, etc.”He remarked that there has been an energy partnership between Germany and Nigeria since 2008

how many gigawatts did it run.
how much did it cost relative to thermal. 10 times from my research.
it's easy to point fingers and make suggestions.
Abi you think say dem go give you the whole budget plus recurrent just to put up a 1 GW solar or wind farm. analyse every before you talk in publc. not everyone here is writing waec or from celebrity section
I don't even remember saying anything about GW so what are you rambling about or you just can not read and comprehend simple English words..

Do you need analysis to tell you that you must start from somewhere with what you have till you achieve your objective?

The fact that you can not walk today doesn't mean you should not start crawling today to allow you to walk tomorrow.

It's common sense that we can not generate everything we need today regardless what form of energy we build because we don' have the capacity and resources, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't start from somewhere. Every thousand mile starts from taking the first step.

You people reason too shallow and depthless..

fiizznation:
You see my friend wind and solar are very expensive to maintain. Besides, erecting windmills that will generate the amount of power/megawatts Nigerians need will likely run into billions of dollars. Aside from the pollution and environmental degradation cause by fossil fuels/fossil power plants, it still remains our best option for power generation for the meantime. Why? Well fossil power plants have the capacity to generate huge amount of electricity in just one single place, but the average windmill or your solar can't do this. I don't think we should also ignore the efficiency of fossil power plants and its cost effectiveness.

I don't even think any power minister in Nigeria will ever ignore fossil power plants and venture into renewable energy when we have gas in abundance
[/s]

1. Wind and solar requires all most zero maintenance especially solar. What's their to maintain in stationary and none mechanical solar panels? Please tell us.

2. Solar and windmills are renewable energy that's great for the environment and where the rest of the world is heading.

3. Where is the sense and wisdom in investing billions in ancient rubbish that the rest of the world is dying to leave behind? Are you stuck in reverse?

4. Like I said, Portugal and Germany powered their country for days last week without gas, oil or coal, everything was done with renewable energy.

5. It's very ignorant and ridiculous to say wind and solar can not produce enough power in Nigeria when countries like Germany, the largest economy in Europe is functioning entirely on renewable energy.

Do you people even think or read through what you type before posting or you just type and post just for the heck of it?

very stoopid nonsense. we have over 600 trillion in gas reserves and dip mumu say we should ignore it and chase very insanely expensive and unproven alternative energy. solar cannot run industry..... yet
Portugal for 3 days or more running powdered the whole of Portugal with renewable energy from windmill to solar and this one here is spewing ignorant nonsense.

How are industrial are you more than Portugal and Germany the largest economy in Europe that powdered the whole of Germany last week with renewable energy and not a drop of oil or gas?

Oil and gas is fast becoming a thing of the past and only foolish and irresponsible countries invests in fosil power plants these days.

Instead of spending billions of dollars on fosil power plants, we should be erecting windmills, letting rhe discos start installing roof top solar panels to supply uninterrupted power supply and charge same way they charge now. We wont even need transmission lines or other needless investments.

They should even be subsidizing solar installation with all the billions There are wasting on power plants.

There are too many easy way out, our leaders are just too slow and old in their thinking.

With solar and wind or other forms of renewable energy, norhing major breaks down and whatever is fixable in no time ans cheaply

Whilst the East are busy pushing in their own way, the North are battling insurgency but yet still trying to consolidate where they can, the South-South are busy blowing up pipelines, waiting for claims money, polluting their own land and waters, taking away their alternative source of livelihood.

Its just a pity..

Ogun State is developing so fast that all it needs to compete better with Lagos is a Sea Port.
The SW is able to do this and concentrate on development like they always do because they are not only smart, also because they are not bugged down with antisocial behaviour like inter communal hatred, lack of brotherly love and care, tribalism, religious hatred and bigotry like we see everyday in other regions..

Omoluabi and collective progress is a state of mind in the SW.

We are not experiencing inter tribal hatred and petty jealousy like Anambra people hating and despicing Imo people snd thinking they are better than them.

In iboland, a new flyover bridge in Imo State is a bad thing and must be condemed and the governor abused by the same ibo people, but a new flyover bridge in Anambra brings praise and adulation.

This is inter communal hatred, bitterness and lack of brotherly love that impede progress and development.

In the SW, progres in any corner of Yorubaland is progress for all in Yorubaland.

This is our strength and major advantage..
