UK pledges £32 million support for Nigeria’s humanitarian, energy needs

https://media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2016/04/Buhari-and-David-Cameron.jpg

The UK government has pledged £ 32 million support to Nigeria over the next three years to help deliver humanitarian assistance and protections to victims of the crisis in the north-eastern part of the country.
The UK minister for international development, Nick Hurd, said the British government’s gesture would help provide relief for over seven million people facing increased humanitarian devastation as a result of the conflict in the region.
“The UK is committed to continuing to help Nigeria to provide humanitarian assistance and protection for people affected by the conflict in north eastern Nigeria,” Mr. Hurd said.

Welcoming Nigeria’s efforts to support the affected population, the envoy said the UK government was looking forwards to the continued collaboration with all partners to strengthen the effort to reach the most vulnerable people in difficult areas.
He said the funds, which would be channelled through the United Nations, UN, the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, and other humanitarian organisations, would be used to provide support for critical life-saving assistance.
Apart from support for nutrition, food security, water and sanitation as well as protection of civilians affected by the conflict, the minister said technical expertise would also be made available to the Nigerian government to support the humanitarian response to the crisis.
Noting the enormous and growing humanitarian needs in north-east, Mr. Hurd said the situation required a sustained, large-scale government-led response to meet people’s basic needs and to help them rebuild their lives once security conditions allow them to return home.
The minister said the new funding is in addition to more than £8.2 million provided by the UK since 2014 to help respond to the life-saving humanitarian needs of people affected by the conflict though violence, displacement, and loss of livelihoods.

In addition, the Minister announced a substantial increase of £16.7 million to boost Nigeria’s solar energy programme.
“The additional funding is in support of a UK-sponsored Solar Nigeria Programme for which £37.1 million has already been approved since 2013 to promote access to household energy in Nigeria.”

Sometimes if you are fighting to believe in the Nigeria project our leaders will remind you that some regions don't deserve their attention.

Call me a tribalist now and i will embrace it with glee but we can see how the billions of contract were ceded to the North and SW.

Is the SS/SE part of Nigeria or is their resources solely for plunder and use to enrich other regions?

The revenue from oil will be used to pay this 2billion dollar loan but the people from that region are not alowed to share in the spoils of the loan.

Please don't tell me about who voted who because in democracy there is freedom to vote for anyone you want but the winner needs to carry everyone along.

My heart bleeds because this government ois sowing seed of division instead of integration.

If a restructuring is not done in this shameful system we call Federalism then an abortion might happen before the delivery day.

All Buhari has done is to widely open the gates of importation unto China which is funny because we thought he was encouraging locally made products and exportation? undecided

This deal will greatly benefit the Chinese more than Nigeria because now that there is a free flow of importation from China into Nigeria, the demand for Yuan will increase greatly which will increase its value which is exactly the same thing we are facing with dollar.

Don't try to hood wink us, your certificate less president definitely doesn't understand the intricacies of the deal he just made.
The loan agreement has nothing to free flow of finished products into Nigeria and our sovereignty still allow us to ban whatever we don't want in our country.

The agreement remains about infrastructure financing and importation of raw materials for our factories and industries to maximum productivity and export.

Wait ooo.....I've been seeing stupid stupid comments here from most NairaLanders with most of you all missing the real fact......here I Quote...:

Dangote gets a loan of $2Billion n a whole country like Nigeria gets a loan of $6Billion....hmmm smh

Question...!

1. Does that mean that Dangote's cement plants are far almost close to all the infrastructure the GMB plans for the whole country that its diff with Africa's largest population is just $4Billion huh? That's awkward.

2. From what I see here, Buhari's govt is only interested in seeing to the full establishment of Northern supremacy in Nigeria's economy for the President to solicit a loan for Dangote's company alone(I know most of you will call me a tribalist but check well you'll see that most of the embattled budget mainly benefits the North)

3. What exactly is that $6b will do in a country like Nigeria if Dangote's proposed cement plants will gulp $2b....huh?

Please someone with a Reasonable mindset should answer me.....ohh, let the Bashing begin...am ready for it.
The 2 cement factories means cheaper cost of cement for you yourself to build with and for general construction in your country

The 2 cement factories means jobs for you and your people

The 2 cement factories means cement exports and foreign currency generator for your country

The 2 cement factories means addition to your country's tax and income generating base to provide infrastructures and social services for you and your people...

It's 2016 and all you have to offer humanity is still bigotry and tribalism even when you are benefiting directly from what you are foolishly criticizing.

Pidggin:
Even China have dollar reserves. Is it a mistake that the West and other important countries ignore the Yuan?
1. Nigeria is not the west and Nigeria and the west are not facing the same economic struggles..

2. The fact that China accumulates dollars has no bearing on our own economic worries and just to add to that, China can afford to collect dollars as reserves which we should be doing also, but we are incapable of doing that right now since the only avenue is strong export and a very diversified economy which ours is currently not.

3. Since we can are in no position to generate dollars or spend whatever dollar we have at the moment, we must boost our export.

4. Boosting our exports means we must first improve our power supply to make sure our manufacturing factories, industries and the informal sectors down to the hair dresser and so on..

5. Since nearly all our manufacturing depends on raw material imports from China, it makes great sense to buy and import via Yuan instead of strong and expensive dollars that gets you less and drains whatever you have saved in dollars..

6. The dollar is too strong to trade with right now and it won't be in our best interest to keep exhausting our meager dollars.

7. Lastly and again, we need to get our acts together first before comparing with other countries with different economic situations and realities. Let's cut our coat according to our size by first growing our local manufacturing and export potentials. This is what generate dollars, not comparisons with other countries like China with strong manufacturing base that translates into dollars regardless.

Those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat same with more dire consequences.

The Chinese do not run a charity, every agreement must favour them or no deal. Have you given a thought to the terms of the agreement, do you have an idea what we will be paying in the long run? What are we battering with the Chinese in exchange for this loan? They have a strong economy with strong fundamentals which we lack, they have the capacity to manipulate the Yuan as they like, they have a large pool of cheap and skilled labour, and they are fiscally disciplined, the very opposite of Nigerians.

The Chinese will flood Nigeria with cheap goods and our industries will die, unemployment will increase, hunger will hit the roof and there will be social unrest. we do not have the local industrial capacity to compete with their products and the few ones we can boast of will be strangled by Chinese competition.

Do not ever think the Chinese are coming to do you a favour, they are coming to enslave you! grin
History of your county is borrowing money to loot and share like 16 years of PDP, DasukiGate and before them.

Today's history is borrowing money to build crirical infrastructures, to grow our economy and create jobs which means increase in government income to payback our debt and still remain on top.

You are not saying anything about China and loans that even primary school children doesn't know about.

China is not different from your own loan issuing banks because when people loan you money, they do so to get something in return in form of interests or access to win infrastructure projects in Nigeria which is ok as long as we do the right thing with the money in form of delivered infrastructures , jobs, expansion of government tax base and income and improved industrial and human productivity.

Unfortunately, you didn't learn anything from your own history hence your ignorant and shallow post.

What is guiding you people's argument is the same hatred, bigotry, destructive politics and not logic, sensible and rational reasoning.

We welcome intelligent discussions about our country, but not the shallow and lazy thinking reasoning you people keep coming up with...

Honestly, I feel strongly against this loan junket by president Buhari. We are a mono product economy, crude oil our economic mainstay has lost a lot of value in the world market and as cheaper cleaner alternative sources of energy are discovered it will continue to lose rank in the pecking order of global highly sought commodities.

Taking a loan at this time to finance our budget does not make sense, where are we going to get money to pay back? What are the terms of the loans? Is anybody watching out for the interest of ordinary Nigerians? When poo hits the fan, no one will be spared, including those among us who have refused to be objective about this government.

Crude oil will continue to lose value, it will never be $100/barrel again.

Are we being enslaved to the Chinese?
1. Don't be shortsighted. Borrowing money is not a big deal, it's all about what you intend to do with the money.

2. We have the largest government budget ever designed to address many issues affecting our economic development from lack of diversification to job creation, the budgetary increase is needed to tackle these issues and get us on the right track.

3. Borrowing to address issues plaguing you means infrastructure upgrades from power generation and transmission to human development which = Productivity in crease and jobs which = Income for the government via taxes and strong exports.

4. 10% increase in power generation and transmission can generate enough money to pay back everything we owe through increased productivity and optimum performance by our lackluster performing industries, factories down to hair dressing salons and informal sectors.

5. Our budgetary benchmark is $38 , but Oil is selling way above $38, meaning we are already making extra money and which could even be saved and diverted to pay down our debt.

6. We have trillions in our TSA account which we didn't have before.

7. No more massive oil thefts and dodgy oil contracts and other shady ways of looting us dry.

Nigerians voted for this administration to manage their affairs for 4 years and ultimately fix our decades old problem and obviously they've examined the best possible way to tackle the problem so why not just give them room to address our issues and do what we asked them to do and if at the end of their 4 years you still are not satisfied with their performance, you have every right to go to the polls and vote them out.

To me, we are already weaning just due to the fact that we are no longer bleeding and looted everyday, we are getting back our looted funds and the criminals involved are answering for their crimes against Nigerians.

It took ore than 50 years to damage Nigeria as a county and to expect Nigeria to be rescued in less than a year is absolutely impossible unless you have some other issues affecting your judgment and sense of reasoning like politics, ignorance, tribalism or bigotry which obviously is the only basis for the noise and negativity out there today..

We love to engage and debate intelligently, but it gets very difficult when all many of you have to offer sounds shallow and unintelligent.

I hope their eyes open on time to see the foolishness in cutting their nose to spite their face.

I doff my hat for Goje and Jubrin.
The Northern NASS guys diverted funds for the rail line in the south to spend on meaningless and irrelevant projects that was never included in the budget which obviously opportunity to loot, but the southern NASS jokers looked the other way and instead if questioning their NASS colleagues in the North and demanding why they diverted money for their projects in the south to the North to address made up projects not included in the budget, they are busy attacking the president and his party and blaming him for not including the project in the original budget when in fact the projects the north took the money to spend in the north were not included in the budget either.

Are they asking their Northern friends in the house why their money was diverted to spend of projects not included in the budget in the North? No...

So, it's ok for the north to spend money for projects in the south on projects not included in the budget, but the south but it's not ok for the south to do the same thing to their advantage..

See how silly, incompetent out of focus and stupid the southern senators and reps are especially the ones from SE/SS.

I say this all the time, they don't mind getting abused, taken advantage of and denied progress and advancement as long as the people doing it to them are enemies of their perceived enemies. They put politics, hatred, bitterness and bigotry ahead of their own progress and survival.

While the rest of the country is looking out for themselves, they sit around and preoccupy themselves with politics, hatred and bitterness..

This is how they lose all the time and why they are at the bottom of everything.

The Prof is basically advocating for constitutional dictatorship and thinks that Buhari will be there forever.

NASS is the representatives of Nigerian people and have the power of the purse hence the constitution even gave them the power to sack an elected President provided they get the support of 67% of their members.

The President can't sack a Legislator rather the people can recall their elected representative.

If you are not satisfied with your elected representative, there are procedures the constitution put in place to recall him/her.
The majority of the Nigerian electorates voted for that man to lead them and manage their affairs for 4years.

NASS are lawmakers and part of their job is to appropriate funds for the presidents agenda and priorities and not to usurp the executive's responsibilities by drawing up their own budgets and assigning funds the executive never asked for to support their own side deals. This is not their job.

The crooks at NASS have a very warped understanding of their responsibilities.

Veto or no veto is irrelevant at this point, the constitution is clear and unambiguous when it comes to the constitutional obligations of all the arms of government and the judiciary can settle that if the legislature remains clueless and ignorant per their spelt out obligations.
