The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, has insisted that President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, is not qualified to rule Nigeria. Okupe, alongside Ekiti State governor, had before the March 28 Presidential election called for the disqualification of Gen. Buhari over issues bothering on his credentials. Despite the certificate controversy, Nigerians voted for Gen. Buhari and he won the election. However, Okupe said he is still of the opinion that Buhari is not the type of leader Nigeria needs. The presidential aide shared this on his Facebook page. Read below… These are very interesting times in our nation. An election has come and gone. A victor has emerged and the loser has conceded. Yet some of our folks are behaving as if we have just gone through a war between two hostile nations. Apc agents all over the place are unrelenting in their tirades of abuses, insults and lies against President Jonathan, his aides and supporters. It is shameful that we are still saddled with denying falsehood & fabrications in the social media and even hither to highly respected Newspapers. Missing $20b found in an account in zenith. PGEJ returns tons of dollars to federation accounts. N2trillion spent on elections by PGEJ. Okupe says chibok girls will not be found. How many lies, deliberate falsehood and evil propaganda, outright curses and attacks must we suffer just because we lost an election in which we were never disgraced. Buhari polled 15m(56%) while Jonathan scored 12m (46%) Those who talk to us disparagingly should respect the sentiments of the 12 million who voted for Jonathan. Of course we have our reservations about the results but we will pass on that for now. We have lost this election but this is not and can never be a crime. We are all Nigerians and haven lost does not make us less. We should be allowed to bow out peacefully and constitutionally on the 29th of May. Yes I said buhari was not electable. I also said his victory will not happen. I said and I Still insist that buhari has no WAS certificate. I said a lot of things to promote my candidate and many things to put his opponent down. I have no regrets for any of the statements I made. Law Mohammed said worse. This is the nature of politics. For any one who cares to listen. The last is neutral ground. It is mostly friend's place, hotel or guest house. As for me, I always like neutral ground cos i love to keep clean record from the area parole.. How about you? |

The police in Rivers said they have arrested 104 suspects for possessing multiple Permanent Voters’ Cards, offensive weapons, ballot boxes and papers. The spokesperson of the River State Police Command, Muhammad Ahmad, said the offences contradict the Electoral Act 2010 or other extant laws of the Nigeria. He added that the police are now investigating the case. “Accordingly, the command is discreetly investigating 41 different cases involving 104 suspects arrested on the election days from different parts of the State,” he said. Mr. Ahmad said the suspects will be arraigned at the end of its investigations. In Rivers State, the March 28 Presidential and National Assembly election and April 11 governorship and State Assembly elections held amid violence and other irregularities. The Civil Society Situation Room, foreign and domestic observers among others, lamented the spate of violence in the state with at least 6 people killed and called for investigations. While the Peoples Democratic Party won most elections in the state, the opposition All Progressives Congress has called for the cancellation of results and re-conduct of the elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission in its reports of the election acknowledged that Rivers witnessed the highest amount of violence during the elections. The red-cap goons known as Ohaneze do nothing but crawl from one place to another offering themselves for sale and for use. This has been their money-making scheme for too long and it can no longer hold water. Can’t we take a cue from the style Dangote adopted and made a kill? The Yoruba have already adopted it and it is working. We have to restrategise to become that economic power house we crave. The idea that every Igboman who makes money whether through his ingenuity or by accident becomes misguided and begins to push for political office even though they are clearly not professional politicians should be discarded. He said it all |
No fewer than 60 persons were feared killed at the weekend in a bloody communal crisis between Ologba and Egba communities of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. Sunday Vanguard reports: It was gathered that the latest crisis which left many with varying degrees of injury was a fallout of a lingering dispute between the fishing communities over the ownership of a fishing pond in the area. The latest crisis between the sister villages came on the heels of last month’s outrageous conflict in Egba community which claimed close to 100 lives when suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded the community. According to our source, “the truth is that there is no love lost between the two communities whose preoccupation is mainly fishing. “Unfortunately, the bitter rivalry between the communities and bottled-up anger for one another has lingered for several years and sometimes resulting in intermittent skirmishes; this latest conflict could have claimed over 60 lives because more bodies are still being recovered from the two communities. “As I speak to you today, (Saturday) the Egba people attacked Ologba during a funeral procession early this morning, after the Friday attack, just when the people were trying to bury their dead. So many people were killed in that attack and more bodies are still being recovered from the scene so we expect the causality figure to rise.” Speaking on the matter, Sir John Ngbede, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, deputy governorship candidate at the last elections, who hails from the area, said the communities have been embroiled in long standing issues. Ngbede also confirmed that the crisis which started Friday evening had displaced so any persons who now live as refugees at Obagaji, the Agatu Local Government Area Headquarters. When contacted, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hyacinth Dagala, explained that the villagers had been fighting over a fish pond for some time. The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said reports in the social media that new cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) had been discovered in the state were untrue. Dr Jide Idris, the Commissioner for Health, made the clarification at a news conference in Ikeja. He said the reports were mere rumours, pointing out that no new case of Ebola had been confirmed both in the state and in the country. “Recently, there was a rumour in the social media on the return of Ebola Virus Disease to Nigeria, killing three and infecting 12 other persons. “According to the rumour, the deceased were returnees from Liberia and one of them was reportedly taken to an undisclosed hospital in Lagos. “Also, it was also rumoured on twitter that two Chinese visitors from Sierra Leone have also died of EVD at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). “However, our findings reveal that these reports were completely untrue and that no new Ebola case has been confirmed in any facility in the state or in the country. “We urge residents to ignore the rumour and not panic as the government is doing everything possible to ensure the virus does not re-enter the country,“ he said. Idris said the state government would continue to collaborate with the Federal Government on border surveillance to check cross-border infections. The commissioner said that the government would also intensify campaigns against the EVD to keep residents safe. He said the Ebola Treatment Unit at the Mainland Hospital had been placed on alert to respond to the need for isolation of any new case. Idris urged residents to maintain good personal hygiene and clean environment to eliminate risks of infections. The commissioner urged residents and health professionals to report any suspicious case of the virus for speedy interventions. He said if people with symptoms like vomiting, bleeding from the ears and eyes, headache were responded to early, they could be saved from the resultant death. All the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party who lost in the just-concluded 2015 general elections, especially in the northern part of the country, lost because of same factors regardless of their states. These factors include President Goodluck Jonathan’s extreme unpopularity in the north, Muhammadu Buhari’s cult-like followers in the region, and the fact that most Nigerians were angry with the PDP because of certain reasons, especially its failure to combat insurgency that has devastated the North-eastern part of the country with the attendant socio-economic effects being felt throughout the North. In fact, in some parts of Nigeria, including Adamawa State, the PDP was overwhelmingly rejected that anybody the All Progressives Congress presented was voted for. Apart from the above generic factors that affected Nuhu Ribadu’s fortunes in the Adamawa governorship race, there are other factors which were peculiar to his ambition. Ethnicity, religion and money politics are deeply rooted in Adamawa politics and often shape the voting pattern in the state. The Adamawa 2015 governorship election was characterised by deep religious sentiment. For instance, the Social Democratic Party governorship candidate, Markus Gundiri ran his campaign largely on the platform of faith – banking on only Christian votes. Mr. Gundiri’s envisaged that since there were three Muslim-Hausa-Fulani candidates running on the platforms of the APC, PDP and PDM, he would carry the day. Mr. Gundiri’s adventure affected Ribadu’s chances: most of the PDP strongholds gave their votes to him. In fact, Mr. Gundiri’s candidacy was a product of anger with the PDP for failing to allow the candidacy of a Christian. There were speculations that Governor Bala Ngilari supported the SDP instead of his party, the PDP. The second issue that affected Mr. Ribadu’s chances was the SDP campaign style which forced the Muslim Hausa-Fulani to follow the path and direction of their cousins in the northwest- the famous APC SAK. Thirdly, Mr. Buhari has a special relationship with Adamawa people- his wife is from Adamawa state. In fact, Mr. Buhari’s voice was aired on some radio stations in most states in the north asking people not to disgrace him and his party, the APC. That singular statement was very instrumental in denying Mr. Ribadu huge number of votes especially from the Hausa-Fulani dominated areas. The internal crisis within the PDP was also a disaster to the former EFCC chairman’s ambition. The crisis in the PDP was not settled up to the time of elections, the aggrieved were not fully integrated into the party. The Atiku Abubakar factor in Adamawa politics was also an another albatross for Mr. Ribadu. At the tail end of the governorship campaign, Atiku became very determined to deliver his state to the APC. That affected Mr. Ribadu in the southern part of Adamawa, especially in the Chamba chiefdom. The Adamawa governorship election results have some far reaching political implications on the state’s polity. There are losers and winners. Former governor Murtala Nyako is a winner- most of his political associates won elective posts, while all of his political foes suffered defeat. Atiku Abubakar is another winner- he has rekindled his hitherto strong political structure and kingmaker position in Adamawa. The Governor-elect, Mohammed Jibril Bindawa is also a winner – he has assumed a post of prime political relevance, though his political future will be determined by the way he approaches the much needed development in the state and his ability to free himself from the shackles of Nyako’s men who were associated with Adamawa’s underdevelopment. The APC as a political party is a winner; it has completely displaced the PDP. There are also quite a number of losers- the PDP, Governor Bala Ngilari, Marcus Gundiri and Ahmed Modibbo. In fact, Mr. Gundiri will have a long and difficult political journey if he is to re-establish himself into all-inclusive and ‘secular’ politicking. Mr. Ribadu was the best governor Adamawa couldn’t have. He fought a good battle, but PDP’s extreme unpopularity already made his platform very weak. President Jonathan extreme disapproval in the north made it hard for people to approve anything associated with him, while the Buhari tsunami swept away anything and everything PDP — good, bad, or ugly. Mr. Ribadu was a good candidate but at the wrong time. 10 Nigerians are feared dead after angry South Africans launched a xenophobic attack on African migrants in Johannesburg on Friday April 10th. According to reports, 5 Gabonese, 10 Somalis and 5 Congolese students were also killed with some of their bodies set ablaze during the attack. According to reports, the South Africans say their anger is that black migrants from other African countries are taking all the jobs available to young men in their country, leaving them, the citizens jobless, and slowly taking over their economy. In a related development, 5 Africans migrants in South Africa were killed in yet another string of xenophobic attacks in Durban yesterday April 14th. The South African police is currently patrolling the city to avert further attacks on shops owned by immigrants from other African countries. Malawian government have concluded plans to repatriate its citizens in South Africa following the increased rate of xenophobic attacks. The national leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies worked against the party during Saturday’s governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections. The party said this was why it performed woefully during the elections. National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Olisa Metuh, stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Monday. He alleged that the action of some employees of the electoral body and the security agencies indicated they were in a hurry to satisfy their incoming Commander-in-Chief. Metin said, “We didn’t do well in the elections because INEC and security agents worked against us. It was as if they were in a hurry to satisfy and do the bidding of the incoming Commander-in-Chief. “Look at what happened in states likes Plateau, Abia, Plateau, Imo, Zamfara, which are parts of our strongholds. “Employees of INEC and security agents colluded with the opposition party to rob us of our victories. In a statement he later issued, Metuh said the the elections were characterised by what he described as widespread irregularities supported by certain INEC and security officials to the advantage of the All Progressives Congress. He wondered if such officials were intimidated by APC’s blackmail and propaganda to deliver its candidates in the polls. He said, “Evidence abound of widespread irregularities across the country with INEC rejecting results from the strongholds of PDP candidates for no just cause while accepting the figures of those of the APC. “In Lagos, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Ogun, Oyo, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Niger, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi and Imo states, there are proofs of electoral manipulations ranging from underage voting, ballot stuffing and intimidation of PDP supporters to alteration of some aspects of the process in favour of APC. “In Abia state, but for the outcry of the people and timely intervention of the INEC headquarters, which rejected the illegal cancellation of results from three local governments and strongholds of the PDP by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner even after they have been announced by the returning officers, the PDP would have been robbed of its well deserved victory in those areas.” Source: http://www.punchng.com/news/inec-security-agents-worked-against-us-pdp-2/ |

Based on results announced from 55% of polling units across Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is leading Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by more than 80,000 votes. Figures obtained as at 9.30 p.m. (Nigerian time) revealed that Mr. Ambode had received 325,026 votes as opposed to 240, 467 votes for Mr. Agbaje The APC and PDP are seen as the main rivals in the race for the Lagos State governorship. Both parties campaigned heavily over the last week in the state that was carried by the APC’s presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari. Lagos State is Nigeria’s most populous city and has historically been the site of intense opposition politics. The governorship race drew national and international attention a week ago following threatening comments by Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos warning some representatives of Igbo communities that they must support Mr. Ambode or face drowning in the lagoon. Mr. Akiolu’s incendiary comments were widely condemned on the social media as well as by numerous political groups. SaharaReporters will file updates about the governorship polls in Lagos as well as other states as they become available. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Plateau State has warned those without the Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs to stay away from polling units during tomorrow’s elections. INEC reiterated that only those in possession of their PVCs would be allowed into polling units even as card readers would be deployed for the April 11, 2015 elections. In a statement signed by the Head, Voter Education and Publicity, Osaretin Imahiyereobo, the commission said that it had taken adequate measures to ensure that the card readers do not pose any challenge during the exercise. According to him, “The Commission has reviewed the operation of the card readers in the March, 28th elections, identified the challenges and has taken adequate measures to address them. “Card readers are to be deployed for the April, 11 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections in the State.” He assured that if the card readers malfunctioned and cannot be replaced within a specific period, voting will continue the next day. As Nigeria returns to the polls tomorrow, I encourage all registered voters to come out en masse and exercise their right to vote. I have instructed our security agents to fully facilitate the right of Nigerians to choose leaders of their choice at the gubernatorial and assembly levels by remaining non partisan and ensuring that we all vote in a secure environment. Because of their sacrifice in securing our nation, we can all be confident to come out and vote our conscience all over the federation. I urge contestants to respect the will of the people as we promote a new Nigeria that is a pacesetter and light bearer in the practice of democratic politics without bitterness. May God bless Nigeria. GEJ Source: Gej Facebook page |

Kidnappers of the Orekoya kids have demanded a N13 million ransom for their release. The kids were abducted by their housemaid on April 8, a day after she was hired. The kids are Ademola (6), Adedamola (4) and Aderomola (11 months). The housemaid, Mary Akinloye, a 23-year-old indigene of Ibadan, Oyo States, was said to have been hired through OLX, an online trading portal. The agency, formerly known as Dealfish, deals in buying and selling; it is also a free classified advert website where one can easily post adverts including vacancies for free. Akinloye was said to have told the kids’ eldest brother, Michael (10), that she was going to buy his siblings’ biscuits. Yesterday, the Orekoyas got a call, asking them to pay a N13 million ransom. All the family’s efforts to reach the maid had failed until yesterday. The Ikorodu, Lagos address she gave could also not be traced. Michael alerted their mother to the disappearance of his siblings when the maid did not return with them by 1pm, about five hours after they left home. Around 9am yesterday, the children’s mother, Mrs Adebisi Orekoya reached the maid’s phone, but heard a male voice that demanded a N13 million ransom. The Orekoyas begged to speak with their children and the kidnappers promised to get back to them at 10am. “They called at 10am and gave the phone to my children; I asked them (two of the children) ‘how are you?’ They said ‘mummy, we are fine.’ The kidnappers then told us to get the money as soon as possible, else…,” she told The Nation yesterday at their Lawanson Road, Surulere, Lagos residence. A distraught Mrs Orekoya wondered how the woman she decided to help turned to hurt her. “I just want to appeal to them to return my children; we do not have that kind of money. I wonder what they are given the 11-month old baby to eat since yesterday,” she said. Mrs Orekoya, who works in a bank, urged the police to help recover her children. She seemed to have had a premonition of the incidence, saying: “I was supposed to leave home by 6am that day to resume work by 7:30am but I couldn’t leave until 7:30am. Despite that I kept returning to our apartment from downstairs, asking the children if they were alright. They replied ‘yes.’ I will go downstairs again and return up stairs, going to their (children’s) room asking again if they were alright and they would say ‘Yes mum.’ That was how I left home after the third time of doing so; it’s unfortunate that it turned out this way.” Mrs Orekoya’s father, Senior Apostle Adegoke Adekunle, appealed to the kidnappers to release his grand children. He said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Itire Police Station, Isah Abdulmajid has visited the family, adding: “We hope the security agents will help with their (children) release.” The Nation saw family members and other well wishers in the sitting room, commiserating with the Orekoyas. Lagos Police Command spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), confirmed the ransom demanded by the kidnappers. He said efforts were on to nail the culprits and rescues the children. “All hands must be on the deck to rescue the children,” he said.
