I disagree with you, why? Because this TV series has a comic that it actually follows the story line....After the negan incident, we will get introduced to Ezekiel...I don't wanna say more so as not to spill spoilers but my advise is that you should try to also follow the comics a little bit to know the direction the series is heading towards.
