Hey pls help me o i want to study computer science in a university (unilorin) and my dad and other people advised me not to study it that i can study it in a cafe or a computer institute but from what i have about the course i really love it can someone explain to me why they said so?
computer science is not about programming. It's about computation. The science of computation. What is computable and what is not. What is the most efficient way to perform a computation etc. You will study algorithms- the tools used in computation. Compilers os etc. It is math intensive. It's not about programming languages .
Your father's statemnt stems from the misconception ppl hav about cs because of the word computer in it.
In a good cs program,u'll learn lots of maths in some poor programs it mayb more of practicals nd less theory.

It depends on what you intend achieve as an aspiring programmer. If you want to learn Web development and design then learn the following in this order:
(1) Html
(2) CSS
(3) javascript
(4) php
(5) include a graphic software like corel draw, Photoshop e.t.c

If you want to build mobile apps or write computer programmes then go for python, though there are other programing languages but I chose python in this context because it's an open and general purpose programming language.
arent most popular languages general purpose? Besides,if by open, you mean open-source , how many novices inspect the source codes of the languages they use? What percentage programmers even do this?

Religion / The Illogical Contradiction Of Watchtower And Governmnts Theology by asalimpo(m): 5:23pm On Jun 27, 2019
The watchtower has an anti government stand. It doesnt recognize human governments. It's members sing no national anthems nor say pledges nor salute flags.

They believe they r serving God.
Inspite of copious clear categorical scriptures to the contrary.

Issue is the glaring illogicality behind such stances!

Do jws expect the governmnts they hate to protect them?

Do they expect the soldiers fighting for the govt to lay down their lives for the integrity of their country so that jws could go about their daily businesses in peace?

Do jws receive salaries from this govts? Govts r one of the highest/highest employers of labour. Would a christian take a paycheck from the devil?

Do jws receive pensions from this devilish govts they dont recognize?

Do enjoy the largesse of good governance and administration e.g good roads, free nd affordable health care/education/housing etc . Do jws want all these good things in life yet refuse to vote for ppl who could enact such changes?

Do jws think? Anythinking person can see that it is hogwash to espouse such an illogical/hypocritical nd contradictory teaching.

2008, I started the long, painful journey towards learning web development.

Since I had a day job, I knew that this process was going to consume my nights and weekends. And, since I had never taught myself any technical skills online before, I was aware that there were plenty of unimaginable challenges that would rear their ugly heads along the way.
But here is what I could not anticipate: After using hundreds of written, youtube video and interactive tutorials, I found that the methods for teaching technical topics online were incredibly… primitive and insufficient.

The State of Online Coding Tutorials
There are thousands of tutorials written per year on HTML, CSS and JavaScript by developers with tens of thousands of years of collective experience.

You would think that there would be a rich ecosystem with a variety of teaching methods and interactive tools.
Not the case. Instead, coding tutorials simply repackage 20th century teaching techniques with 21st century technology.
Video tutorials mimic a classroom lesson with a whiteboard.

White-Board Teaching is good, but not sufficient, Video Tutorial is good but not enough!

E.g if u find chemistry utterly repulsive, have u tried to study it for a looong time inspite of d repulsion then measure your proficiency afterwards? Say,u decide to grok chemistry for 1000 hours, or 2000 hrs, how would u compare? airsaylongcon:

Yes Pascal was in the early 2000s. And I agree that the curriculum may be outdated. But I don't believe the problem solving that is involved in this is outdated. What the teacher is teaching here is the problem solving and algorithm development technique. If the OP can develop his own algorithm to solve the problem, it's irrelevant if the final product is in Pascal, Basic, Assembly or Java. All those languages are just a means of expressing the solution. The most important thing is the developed solution.
C and Fortran are alive for reasons mainstream languages can't meet. C is blazingly fast and gives u unfettered control of the system. Fortran is. Very fast and has native inbuilt constructs for scientific computing. Basic was very easy to get started programming with. Assembly gives u even more control over d system than c. The problem is older languages had flaws newer languages tried to address.
Pascal nd Fortran were king of spaghetti code writing. C was unwieldy for writing large programs, hence c with classes ,C++ was born. C++ was too complex , you could program in many ways and shoot urself in d foot while doing so. Also memory leak issues plagued languages that allowed direct access to memory so java came along. Java imposed restrictions that limited programmer's power and enforced programmer to code in a particular paradigm -oop. Java took over the world. It is till one of the most successful programming languages ever. Always trending at or near the top of most popular programming languages. The issue then is why should a school/teacher in this modern era resort to teaching students with languages that could engender very bad coding habits that they'll have to unlearn down the road when they are cheaper more modern alternatives specially built to enforce good sound software engineering principles in the user? It doesn't make sense and is outrightly Stu.pid!
How easy is it to get a BASIC language compiler as against getting a java/kotlin/Python compiler/interpreter?
Why would you want some to code using line numbers and in all uppercase today? Is that how professionals code today?
The only reason is laziness and complacency.

Na wa o! Someone is asking for a simple program in pascal that is a procedural language and someone ias advising him to use OOP in another Language.

Reminds me of the joke were some one who was preparing for an exam in Christian Religious studies was faced with the question "Discuss the life of Jesus Christ". Having studied in detail the life of Apostle Paul, the candidate answered thus

"Who am I to discuss about the life of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! I'd rather discuss about his servant, the Apostle Paul" and he went on a tirade yanning of point.

OP this is actually a simple task. Every Course in university has a "credit" rating (usually between 1 and 4). Also every letter grade has a grade point. For example "A" might have a grade point of 5, B a grade point of 4 all the way to F with a grade point of zero. So to calculate Semester GPA you multiply each course credit rating by the grade point. So if a course has 3 credits and someone scored B in it the grade point will be 3(credit)x4(grade point) to give a grade point of 12. You do this for all courses then add the calculated grade point and divide by the sum of all the credits of the courses. For CGPA you do the same for all courses from year 1 till date.

So for HND 1 Semester 1, you need to list out all the courses, their credits and whatever grade the person scored and calculate the Semester grade point. For Semester 2 you calculate the semester GPA and the cumulative GPA
See the following page for sample. They will need to be modified to suit your needs

In Nigeria of today, a school is teaching future software engineers to build software using the highly faulted procedural method! I know Fortran was the king in the procedural age but the op is using Lazarus ,a modern Fortran(or is Pascal) ide. The new language is object oriented.
This is simple task for toy examples, but for something that looks like a real world app-though trivial- u have to design it properly to handle more scenarios.
The better paradigm for designing software is pop, hence I showed him how to go about it.
E.g what if the software will b used by some1 else? What if student carries over a course etc

What about code reuse and not repeating oneself? This require using mechanisms like encapsulation, inheritance etc. it seems overkill but I thought that was d level op is at

And also Fortran is still favoured among scientists today because of it heavy computing library. Before any arguments, it is used heavily by weather forceast station and some air travelling company. Its last updated compiler is 2018 also.
i know but so are lisp nd ada.
But this isnt d reason it's still on the school curriculum. It's there because the curriculum is outdated. Hod is lazy nd lecturer is lazy. Theyre all dull nd behind d times. Teach languages tht will help them get their career off, later,if they want to,they can pick up obscure/niche languages.
A friend was thought pascal/fortran (cant remember clearly) during his programme in the early 2000s!

i am under instruction. i need to use it. I'm a beginner in programming, help me out with the code please.
Your lecturer is an a@$$hole. S/he needs to be sacked. Or flogged. Anyway, I can help but I program in java. It's more complex than u think, the main issue is in creating a smooth nd beautiful design. So I'll give some tips:
1.) create a timeBlock object
Don't worry what timeBlock means,it's just a conceptual object representing a collection of courses. So a semester system will contain two timeBlock per session and trimester system would contain 3 timeBlock per session. Also if carry overs are done in the same calendar year, then it would go into the session object.

2.) Abstract the calculative functionalities into an interface. Many objects will share this traits. E.g a timeblock- and timeBlock container -session,programme all perform similar actions like: compute GPA,compute cgpa, compute credit hours, etc. All these objects will implement these functions from the interface.
Etc.
The reason for all these abstractions is so that in d future, your code base can b adapted to any school system with very little modification.
It can easily get robust.
I am assuming that u are using the object oriented paradigm.
The right data structure for the internals of the timeBlock should be a dynamic one. That grows nd shrinks as necessary. Arrays will waste memory.
A hash map or set will do.
Good luck.

Our ancestors are very wise and our values, culture and traditions are the best. During the golden age of humanity when our ancestors walked amongst us, It was unheard of for a man to put a lady in the family way without first going to knock on the family's door to show interest.

It is an insult to put a man's daughter in the family way without his consent. Now, if such happens by mistake and the person responsible develops cold feet to make amends, the father or any male in that family have the right to defend their honour. Many culprits have been decapitated in such madness. This shows how we value and respect our women.

This guy in this scenario must now approach the girl's father with all the respect he deserves to save his own head. Literally.
so if a lady got pregnant from consensual sexx it's d man tht bears the brunt and you call tht justice? With such loopholes u can see what womn will do to men?
What if lady goes to man nd infect him with std, what will judgemnt say? Does she foot d hospital bills?

The thing is that I really want to learn but I get bored, discouraged, tired and sleepy every time I try. My thought is that I need to find means to make learning it more enjoyable and real, maybe by being around those who are good in it already or get a project to work on, but I don't know how to even start a project.

I have studied and learnt some complex stuff before in chemistry, so I am confident I would be able to handle this once I get a hang of it. I have learnt to a good extent both HTML and CSS, and now trying my mind on JavaScript, but generally my learning have been On&Off kind of. I have been on it since around October last year but its been haphazard and inconsistent.
you hav a problem of motivation. It can b hard to muster the drive to do something like this all alone for extended periods.
You dont need complex math skills to understand how to program, the math skills come in when u r working in a mathematical domain,in other words, the degree of math knowledge required is domain specific. You dont need to worry about math at all at d onset, when u r mature,u will know if/when to acquire more math knowledge.
If u know secondary school math, basic algebra,u r good to go.

In my opinion, dont worry about strtng a project. Just get a language into ur bloodstream. Hook urself up to one and let d concepts drip into u.
This stage is the hardest part because our minds resent unfamiliarity. So time is the only ally u have. Keep ingesting d concepts. Dont look at the passage of time. Keep ingesting. After some time some syntax will begin to seem familiar. You will also begin to hav an itch to solve a little problm tht bothers u. It could b to write a calculator, to copy files etc. When that itch arises, work on it. Complete it . If u havnt completed a small projct u strted, u wont b able to complete a larger one! Motivation is a major issue here.

Lastly, to accelerate ur learning, u need to b under some1 who has been there and has a track record of completing projects. The reason for this is tht,the person will save u time-years infact. The downside to this is tht u will learn his bad traits too.
The other option, is to teach urself. The pro is,as ur skillset grows,so will ur confidence. 2) u will learn how to teach urself things-a meta skill. 3) u r not limited by any structure a teacher couldav imposed. U could explore any topic to ur heart's delight.
The cons are: time- self learning is terribly time consuming. 2) more expensive: the cost doesnt look obvious but,u'll make lots of mistakes which would consume resources- data (internet), books, etc

You think you are depressed and you know what it means to go through difficult times. Trust me you dont but you will find out soon when you drop out without a degree certificate. I have seen what is about to happen to you happen to my friend. He is a singer and performer and was making money from shows. he got admission to read a course he didn't like and was unmotivated. His father told him to try and finish even if with a pass certificate. My guy abandoned his school in his final year to sing song. today his younger brother has also dropped out and his defense is "i am not the first person to do it in this family". Today my friend is chasing undergraduate admission doesn't mind the course because he has become a yard stick of ridicule , something that he got without stress 8 years ago. His fiancees family rejected him....they couldn't allow their daughter who has a MSC and studied abroad marry a university dropout, shes now married to a Doctor.. My guy no longer gets invites for shows and concerts though he still makes money as he has gone into music production. But he has missed out on so many opportunities even an Exxon Mobil job (his father is well connected) because he doesn't have a certificate. He is now seen as someone who is not reliable and doesnt finish what he starts just because of one stupid action. Thats a story his kids will eventually hear. that their father couldnt finish school (When he is not bill gates or zuck). One lesson i learnt is "Always do something whenever your mates are doing it" even if you dont know how to do it. You have the "Wisdom of the crowd that knows you" to help you. He is my physical representation of Job in the bible, cos I have never seen someone endure so many misfortunes till the point his family has left him alone (they still blame him for his younger brother dropping out and he blames himself for it too) . I am sure if he could do things differently he ll try his best to finish with a certificate. My guy now knows depression he understands it, you dont...at least not yet.
your post isnt a motivation but proof of how demented our society has become over this pieces of paper. The guy tht returned to school is cowing in to social pressure which is nothing but a control mechanism by closed-mindedness conformists. The girl got a foreign msc- so her family (why should ur family dictate who u marry?) - how much will the education affect the quality of life they can have together? None. She can speak english so can he? Issue is our society has lifted up this piece of paper to undeserved status.

any warrior that won't help his fellow warrior in time of need is a useless and irresponsible warrior tht should be quatered and sent to the guillotine.

many of men that send money to women do it because they want to show they are rich so they can get into the woman's good book and maybe her pants, not natural instinct, because you are the stronger sex means you should give the weaker sex money? na you send dem make dem weak? nigerian men should better stop this burden mentality so they can save more money

you won't help a male friend that you enjoy his company but help a babe that only chats you when she is broke, fvck you
when ur mum weeps , what is ur initial action?
When ur hear tht a guy insulted ur sister ,say slapped her , what is ur initial response? Infct what does ur sister do? She storms home with tears in her eyes to report to her brother(s) .
What is d dynamic here? Havent u seen brothers confront assaulters on behalf of their sisters? Havnt u seen sons grieve at d tear drops of their mothers?
Havnt u seen girls with many strong brothers gloat at d protection she has?
This is instinctive nd has nothing to do with being weak. If ur younger brother comes home crying tht he was beaten how dyu react? What if ur father was crying? Your reaction to d men is different cuz, men are the strong ones. U expct them to muster courage nd recover. U may fight for ur younger brother but u will try to make him be the warrior nd lion he is. To fight bck. You may console ur weeping father but if it bcomes reoccuring u will b disgusted.
Men, were designed to protect. That's y the male physique is built for strength nd endurance. The male drive is for strength nd power. It's by design. What makes a ruler become despotic and a dictator? The male drive. The lion nd ruler urge! The passion to conquer nd dominate. This created feared races like d vikings nd mongols.

So ... Naturally, some men's heart bleed seeing womn in distress nd they want to help. We've all being there. But some womn, instead of being grateful abuse this priviledges.
Some men actually know tht the womn they play with r actng d b*tch but let it slide. The other side is when d men go perverse nd start acting weak, becomng women wrappers nd doing anythng to please d woman. This is a perversion but it still stems from the inbuilt male instinct to protct the weaker sexx. Same as dictators are abusers of the inbuilt warrior instinct in men.

Its because of men like you that they feel entitled. Would you have help her if she was a man?
guy, this angle u r taking is wrong. Men hav an inbuilt instinct to protect and help weaker species-women,babies,children. We r d stronger sexx. The warriors nd protectors. We r d Lions. But women think this is weakness nd most exploit nd abuse it. A man wont treat his fellow man with d tenderness,he treats a weaker specie but tht would b an insult to his co-warrior rather he'd try to boost him up to regain his strength nd status. His roar.
