Icon4s: You read complete football.
I was one of the writers as at the late 90s.
The drive then was to uncover new players that will take over from the then aging 90s squad.
My focus then was more on identifying young Nigerian players in Europe. oh you were one of the writer's of that magazine? lol I used to buy at 100n if I remember quite well btw late 1993 till usa94 started... another one I also used to read was international soccer review |

elyte89: Baba dis ball we talking of self, even as as today some ardent fan of football don't knw d basic rules if u engage dem, such do happen on dis forum at times
And u want to tell me DT as an 8year old below can analyse different formation like 4-5-1,4-4-2,4-3-3,den as at 92,94,96 year
Me I no believe una o
Okay let me ask u a question, and please b sincere don't check d internet,d Chile 87 u claimed to watch
Wc formation did Nigeria used against Canada in died 2-2,name d starting 11,if u truly u comprehend what u watched as at age 7 den.I knw u can't analyse it
But am sure if I ask u d formations and line ups most teams used from 98 till present,u go tell me wout d help of internet. who said anything about knowing formations as a 7yr old? I knew players not formation.. I would wait to watch matches on tv then to see who wins, the goals and excitement .. it is from 1993 that I started getting ideas about formations.. no need to doubt all these things.. if you still doubt me go and check whether Canada 87 final against Soviet union was a sunshine match (as I alluded to ) or played under floodlight |

Mujtahida: And I've explained to you that then there was nothing to understand other than who win, who score. Finish. One can only know things based on the knowledge prevailing at a time. And I think you misread asha80. Playing football on the pitch was default mode for most boys. Nothing unique about that. What he meant was precisely the staying glued to watch a match. i wonder what is he us doubting it for.. people had different experiences.. as 14yr old leading up to 1994 nations and world cup I was already an avid reader of complete football and international soccer review magazines that you could get in newspaper stands |

elyte89: Bro,my simple point is u can't analyse d game den d way u re analysing it now or 10years back, boss icon4s and odas don get my point
And for asha80,picking interest den was largely on d pitch of play, children den would give deirself "nicknames" of popular footballer reigning den.I can remember vividly DT we do fight for d name rashidi yekini when we want to play 3aside and not an 8year old child or below sticking glue to a TV set b4 a match having d intention to watch live matches as we do now as adult, but kids of today, are more interested in watching live matches, I c dem very well in viewing centers arguing passionately prior to d match, emergence of viewing centers, internet in early 2000,made d sport more popular among kids now, meanwhile those who got to watch it den was thdefault, maybe d family is watching d match or ur uncle or fada took u along to a place where dey re watching d match when NEPA took light at home.
U dare not go out as a kid at night to watch matches den as a kid.but come area now, even if d match 11pm,kids of ages 8-10 will come and watch ball I watched Chile 87 u20 as a 7 yr old at home... our first match we Brazil we lost 0-4... a certain Andre Cruz scored a classic Brazilian free kick against us... that match was around 10 to 11 pm at night.. bro some of us started watching football early.. in Canada 87 u17 final Philip osondu equalized 1-1 agsinst Soviet union.. that match was played around 9pm in nigeria while it was sunshine match in Canada.. we lost to penalty kicks.. Guy forget |

Mujtahida: See if we had picked interests from say age 4 we would have remembered vividly. Thing is most of us didn't pick interest in it cos growing up as kids our lives were about play. And you can see many here remembering the names of wrestlers cos that was what captured our imagination.
And football didn't have the global appeal it has today. So while Rashidi had welts on his back, parents today give birth to a child and one of the first things they buy is a ball. So naturally you can find an 8-10 year old child being more tactically aware than we were cos most of us, our interest picked up only in our mid - late teens.
So elyte89 it has nothing to do with intelligence but rather with consciousness or what the Germans call zeitgeist - the spirit of the times. I picked up interest in footbal and wrestling simultaneously at age 7.. |

Dey were only promoted after Rio Olympics which was held later in the year. AFCON is in January. So those 4 players wouldn't have made the 96 AFCON list. tijani banangida might have made it.. prior to usa94 he played in a friendly match against Georgia and shone do much that there were some talks of bring breaking in the final squad for that tournament |

TheGoodJoe: Note this excerpt from the same article.
Of course it is better than USA ’94, Italia ’90 and Mexico 1986, tournaments which flickered only occasionally.
The author rated 2014 ahead of USA 94 when it comes to drama.
A good example is the game between Argentina and Holland in France 98. The dark night of the game was when Ariel Ortega who thrilled the World with his repeated brilliant displays decided to head butt Van Der Sar in retaliation to a complaint. Not long after that, a long ball to Bergkamp and one of the most delightful first touch in the history of football from Bergkamp took the ball in between I think Ayala's leg. A fantastic finish beating, I think Goalkeeper Roa of Argentina ended the tie.
This kind of thrill and brilliant display was not felt in USA 94. mexico 86 had some all time classic games namely brazil vs france, soviet union vs belgium, argentina vs england and argentina vs germany..brazil vs france had drama, technique and skills all wrapped in one game not sure how in the reporters mind brazil 2014 had more drama than usa1994 |

Mujtahida: As a child I never liked watching football. I recall that NTA used to show football on Saturdays. I never was quite interested. Na USA Champions (wrestling with people like Mike O'hayes, the Mangoes, Kamala the Ugandan Giant, Sergeant slaughter, Roddy Piper Andrew the Giant, Mighty Igor, Jimmy Superfly before it became WWF) na im dey interest me.
Only thing that struck me then in football and was a wonder to my childish mind was how footballers could give long passes and locate the others on the pitch. The thing was a mystery to me.
My interest began to pick up during the miracle of Daman. Then I remembered watching our Afcon qualifying against Angola in 1989 in which Okwaraji slumped and we later heard he died. I still remember say na for dem Ogbonna house I watch that match.
Then my interest died again. Wrestling with all them Hulk Hogan, Warrior, Undertaker, Briefcase etc continued to hold me spellbound.
Japan 93 I picked up again. Then Tunisia 94 I started following the SE as a matter of passion. I watched only the final for one black and white TV and it wasn't clear. I no send. USA 94 I didn't watch any of the matches cos we had moved out of the Airforce Base and there was no power supply where we were. But I was following proceedings. After that tournament I became so intensely passionate about football ehn, my appetite was huge(but I didn't like our local league and still don't). I started watching the premiership then sponsored by Rothmans of Pall mall. Overmars, Bergkamp, Seaman were in Arsenal, Andy Cole, Paul Scholes, Peter Schiemechel were in Man U, Paul Ince and Robbie Fowler were in Liverpool, Andre Flo and Vialli were in Chelsea, zola was in Aston villa and Ginola was in Tottenham.
By France 98 I was already so deep and I watched almost all the matches, often going far away from home to watch matches so that in school one will not be left out of the gist. I will never forget Bergkamp's divine control bringing the ball down from a De Boers' long pass, turning the on rushing Ayala aside and twisting the ball over the head of a hapless Roa who stood transfixed. It was in extra time. Holland won 1-0.and then Kluivert's killer header to equalise against Brazil.
Korea/Japan wasn't that sweet sha but I still enjoyed it. It was from 2005 that my fervour for football began to wane gradually.
I al it ended 2-1 |

Mujtahida: We do Bro. We've had exchanges on this point na. I am still enamoured to players like Maradona, Zico, Asprilla, Stoichkov, van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Zamarano, Silas, De Lima, Baggio (he hurt us but I have personal affection for him) Paul Ince, Klinsmann, Eric Contona, Ginola Zola, Vialli, Andre Flo, Maldini, Kempes, Eusebio, and many others. Go to four four two magazine website you will see interesting articles that give insight into the lives of these players.
Thst was where I read that Escobar the drug don once invited Maradona to play football in his privately built prison. I too like Maradona. He's a crazy guy. That's the difference between him and Messi. Maradona had talent plus a lively personality. Messi is so quiet. sometimes i find myself rewatching clips of 82,86,90,94 and 98 world cups..from 2002 it started getting a bit mechanical(players)..one of my younger cousins once said made a statement "what is so special about brazil and the way they playfootball that older people rave(d) about?..i have watched them and nothing special about the way they played ..they have good players no doubt but nothing spectacular" he was sort of trying to say despite some talented brazillian players that there was nothing to be mad about their style of football that barca plays better football(not disrespecting barca here)...i had to call him aside and told him that the brand of football that oldies raved about died essentially in the late 80s and it was called jogo bonito..i now opened YouTube and showed him clips of brazil of 82 and 86..i now showed him careca's goal against France in 86..the pure poetry of that goal wowed him..ever since he has been looking at other older clips |

Mujtahida: I have decried this trend but sometimes I am thrilled with the infusion of technology into football. Fact is it's inevitable. Machines WILL take over. What you watch in Sci Fi will become a reality.
Till date I go back and watch old football just so I refresh my heart with the poetry that was once football. seems we have the same cravings |

Luckyroro: Thanks for this informative post. My point is the followership and not the Stars who played. 1994 was the end of an Era in terms of stars, 1998 was the beginning/ twilight of an Era to some extent but I'm talking about followership and popularity here. I guess you will agree with us that 1994 has it. like icons4 said the viewership was high because of the time the matches were played.. between 8pm to 12am gmt for most of Africa and Europe.. 12am to 6pm for most of north and south America.. and early morning to maybe 10am for most of Asia... the stadia too had capacity of 50000 and up.. funnily enough Americans who weren't known much for supporting football thronged to the different stadia to watch and almost every match the stadia were filled to capacity.. also there is this aesthetic beauty about sunshine world cups played of central and north America on tv |

safarigirl: dem dey write am for face? What does a promiscuous man look like?
See ehn, laslas, to marry a footballer is not easy. They spend days away from the home, moving from one destination to another to play matches. When they are out there, you can't control what goes on, who they meet, who they are influenced by, you can only hope things work favourably for you. The whole stress of having one's partner away for long periods of time is weighty enough, the emotiinal and physical detachment can be hell
Sometimes, the act isn't necessarily done, it is the suspicion that is heartbreaking.
I dey salute all these girls wey dey folloe footballers, e no easy. most of them do it for the money..one should listen to tales after the footballer retires and the big bucks does not roll in as fat as when he was playing |

TheSuperNerd: Idowu, Obi, Simy Doubtful For DR Congo Friendly; Mikel, Ighalo Out
https://i0.wp.com/www.completesportsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_4361-1_566x400.jpg
Super Eagles left-back Bryan Idowu is set to miss the team’s farewell friendly game against the DR Congo on Monday May 28 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt due to FIFA’s new rule for players listed to play at the 21st World Cup starting next month in Russia.
FIFA have told all 32 partcipating teams to ensure players listed for the World Cup observe a 10-day rest after their last game of the season as a means of ensuring they stay fresh. Idowu is likely to join 14 other Eagles stars who will miss the game due to the rule as the Russia-based defender is set to feature for his club Amkar Perm when they take a 2-0 lead to the Otkritie Arena on Sunday to play hosts FC Tambov in the second leg of the Russia Premier League qualification play-offs.
Idowu was on for all 90 minutes in the first leg played on Thursday at the Zvezda Stadium. If he gets to play on Sunday, it means he will be ineligible for the DR Congo game.
Already out of the game is team captain Mikel Obi who will be playing on Friday in the Chinese Super League as well as striker Odion Ighalo who will be in action with his Chinese club Saturday.
Italy-based duo of Joel Obi of Torino and new invitee, Simeon Nwankwo, are also doubtful for the game if they should play for their respective Serie A clubs this weekend.
