Competent & Courageous Minister Has This to Say: Dayo Orolu WROTE: I was at a CFO Forum earlier today where the Minsiter of Finance, Ms Kemi Adeosun made a presentation. My key take-away: 1. The FG payroll bill in January 2016 was 5billion naira less than that of December 2015. Reason: many fraudulent ghost accounts had been delisted. Plan is to achieve 10bilion monthly savings. 2. 400 accounts opened in a Bank sameday and put on the payroll are now inactive due to BVN. (Some Bank Managers will be transfered to Kuje in no time). 3. Govt plans to reduce domestic borrowing to fund budget deficit as to 'force' banks to lend to the productive sector. 50% of 2016 budget borrowing will be from external sources. 4. Govt spending on Stationery and office consumables in 2015 was 18.5billion while total spend on capital expenditure was 18.9billion. (See why we keep getting poorer). Govt is re-negotiating all contracts of supply for more efficie 5. 30% Capex budget in 2016 is to stimulate the economy. 6. The Minister said her outfit to the forum cost her just two thousand naira. (Message: Ladies, please drop Gucci suits for local materials). She also queried why schol pupils are forced to wear socks daily which we don't produce locally. 7. On looted funds, one (just one!!!) former public official is negotiating with FG to return $1billion (equivalent of 199billion naira at CBN rate) of stolen fund. This is just one of many. 8. She wants to be the first Finance Minister that wouldn't want to know or care to know the price of crude oil. Implying - they plan to build a self-sustaining economy. #MayBuhariSucceed |

Artur Fischer, a German
inventor who registered more
than 1,100 patents, including
the first synchronized camera
flash and an anchor that
millions of do-it-yourselfers
use to secure screws into walls,
died on Jan. 27 at his home in
Waldachtal, in southwestern
Germany. He was 96.
His death was announced by
his company, the Fischer
Group.
Mr. Fischer, a locksmith by
training and an obsessive
tinkerer, came up with his first
patented invention in 1947,
when he wanted to take
pictures of his newborn
daughter.
“At the time, you could only
use a powder flash for interior
shots, which you had to ignite
with a cord,” he told the
magazine Der Spiegel in 2015.
“It was dangerous, and the
picture quality was poor
because the subject usually
blinked at the flash.”
He came up with a
synchronized mechanism that
triggered the flash when the
shutter was released. The
device was bought by Agfa, a
large camera company, and
Mr. Fischer was on his way,
coming up with hundreds of
solutions to nagging technical
problems over the next seven
decades.
In 1958, he addressed a
problem faced by construction
workers and home-repair
amateurs alike: how to insert a
screw securely into plaster or
drywall. He devised a nylon
plug with a split tip to be
inserted into a drilled hole. As
the screw turned, the plug
prevented it from dislodging
the plaster. As the screw
advanced toward the tip, the
anchor expanded, pressing
tightly against the hole. Two
anti-rotation fins on the plug
wedged into the plaster,
keeping the anchor securely in
place.
This was the proverbial better
mousetrap, a major
improvement from the hemp-
filled metal anchors then in
use. Today, about 14 million of
Mr. Fischer’s plugs are
produced every day around the
world.
“What Bill Gates was to the
personal computer, Artur
Fischer is to do-it-yourself
home repair,” Der Spiegel
wrote in its interview.
Mr. Fischer’s other inventions
included Fischertechnik model-
making kits, cup holders with
retractable lids, ventilation
nozzles and edible play-
modeling material made from
potato starch.
“I am interested in any
problem to which I can provide
a solution,” Mr. Fischer told the
German magazine Technology
Review in 2007.
His total number of inventions
put him just ahead of Thomas
Edison, who had 1,093 patents
to his name. In recognition of
Mr. Fischer’s work, the
European Patent Office gave
him a lifetime achievement
award in 2014.
Artur Fischer was born on Dec.
31, 1919, in Tumlingen, now
part of Waldachtal. He was the
son of a tailor. His mother, who
ironed collars to make ends
meet, recognized her son’s
mechanical aptitude and
encouraged him at every turn,
helping him set up a
workbench at home and
buying him the German
equivalent of an Erector Set.
Artur attended a vocational
school but left at age 13 to
serve an apprenticeship with a
locksmith in Stuttgart,
Germany. He joined the Hitler
Youth and enlisted in the
military with the hope of
becoming a pilot, but he was
nearsighted, short and lacked a
high school diploma. He was
trained as a mechanic for the
Luftwaffe and was assigned to
a base in the Palatinate region,
where Adolf Hitler paid a
surprise Christmas visit in
1939.
“I had made a model airplane
to give my mother as a
Christmas present,” Mr.
Fischer told Der Spiegel. “Then
my commanding officer said
that I was the best mechanic
and I should give the plane to
Hitler. It was a horrible time.”
Mr. Fischer survived the Battle
of Stalingrad, leaving on the
last plane, and later in the war
was captured in Italy and sent
to a prisoner-of-war camp in
England. After returning to his
hometown in 1946, he found
work as an assistant at an
engineering company and
began making lighters and
loom switches out of military
scrap. In 1948, he founded his
own company, the Fischer
Group, which today has 42
international subsidiaries,
employs 4,000 people
worldwide and sells its 14,000
products in more than 100
countries.
In Germany, Mr. Fischer is
famous for his Fischertechnik
kits — sets of nylon blocks with
electric motors and
photosensitive cells that
schoolchildren and hobbyists
have used to make machines
and robots, and engineers have
used to model prototypes. The
first kits were given to clients
in 1964 as Christmas gifts, but
they were so popular that they
were sold to consumers the
next year.
Many of Mr. Fischer’s humble
inventions led to spinoffs. He
applied the principle of his
wall plug, for example, to
create a series of surgical plugs
to hold broken bones together.
Mr. Fischer’s wife, the former
Rita Gonser, died in 2013. He is
survived by a son, Klaus, and a
daughter, Margot Fischer-
Weber.
One of Mr. Fischer’s most
recent inventions is a gadget
that makes it possible to hold
and cut the top off an egg of
any size. He got started on the
problem when a hotel owner
complained to him that his
guests, on opening their boiled
eggs for breakfast, always
made a mess — the year was
1946. |
My own opinion is: it has to do with mentality. Even b4 I got scientific proof, av always been of d mind dat, Africans migrated to colonise Europe, though I didn't factor in d Neanderthals. My thoughts have been on enlightenment. I believe d brave, outcasts, outside-d-box thinkers made it out of Africa. D typical African, b4 d coming of Europeans had too many taboos- sacred forests, ogbanjes(abiku), witchcraft, twin births etc, such dat we didn't/dont ask enough questions of happenings around us. Religion sells out in Africa, as d masses practice faith to a fault. Until d Whiteman researched otherwise, d typical African would burn, cut n mutilate d body of d ogbanje, even outcasting d mother. They didn't even try to find a worldly explanation. That I believe is what limits us, compared to other races. Till date, our politicians visits spiritualists; religion is such dat, decisions are arrived at, at d say so of dieties or their messengers. Most Africans aren't curious enough to search/delve for a worldly/logical reason. D ones dat did/do, end up living on d outskirts of society, labelled heretics. I believe it was ancestors like dat who left to colonise Europe. My uninformed opinion. |

Exporters of cashew have blamed shipping
companies for the increasing incidence of
rejected cashew abroad while the shipping
companies have in turn said the exporters are
not entirely blameless.
The issue was raised at a stakeholders’ forum
where members of the National Cashew
Association of Nigeria met with operators of
leading shipping companies in Nigeria to
address issues of delays and rejected cashew
exports.
Speaking during the forum, the President,
NCAN, Mr. Tola Faseru, urged the shipping
companies to reduce the transit time for
shipping cashew from Nigeria, adding that the
time should be set at a maximum of 30 days.
He accused shipping companies of sometimes
keeping the product inside containers for as
long as 120 days, noting that such length of
time could damage cashew given its fragile
nature.
Faseru said, “Most of the shipping companies
don’t even understand. They just treat cashew
as one of those commodities. It is a sensitive
commodity that should not stay in a container
for too long.
“Shipping companies should help us improve
the transit time so that instead of the
commodity taking several months to get to its
destination, the transit time will be shortened.
We want that transit time to be reduced to 30
days.”
He added, “The moment the container stays
beyond 30 days, we will send a lawyer and the
shipping company involved will pay 100 per
cent cost.
“You know how it is when a commodity gets
back here in a bad state. There are claims that
come back to the exporters. This past year
there were huge claims that were given to the
customers. When the product is damaged,
the exporter suffers huge losses.”
In their defence, some of the shipping
companies represented at the forum blamed
the situation on exporters and terminal
operators, falsified and inaccurate information
from exporters and delays caused by Lagos
traffic when products were being moved to the
ports.
The General Manager, Pacific International
Lines, Mr. Verhaert Mathias, called for a look
at the entire supply chain instead of putting
the blame on the shipping companies.
According to him, 2015 was a difficult year for
shipping companies because of the slide in oil
price.
He said, “Ships were not full anymore and
some even pulled out and stopped doing
business because if they did not pull out, they
would sail empty and incur losses.”
He urged exporters to pay attention to
packaging details, adding that they should also
be transparent about the real volume of the
product they were sending out.
The General Manager of Hull Blyth shipping
agency, Paul Brethel, remarked that weather
differences in countries other than Nigeria
affected the quality of cashew when the
product was taken to those countries.
He said, “When you move a steel box from a
warm climate to a cold one, condensation sets
in. When there is warm season in Nigeria,
there is winter in South Africa and Nigeria’s
product has certain vices, so exporters cannot
turn around and say it is the fault of shipping
companies.”
Also speaking, the South Main Export Manager
for Maersk Line, Maureen Okojie, said the
decision on what went out was based on
imports, adding that because imports
nosedived in 2015, it had ripple effects on
exports.
She emphasised transparency on the part of
the exporters, stressing that shipping lines
needed to know if they kept dedicated
products and the length of time it would be
delivered.
Okojie added, “The issue of transparency
should cut across and NCAN should tackle
fumigation because some government
agencies go about with fictitious documents
passing the bills to the shipping companies,
claiming to have fumigated products that have
already been fumigated by exporters.”
Some of the shipping agencies blamed
terminal operators who had programmed for
imports instead of exports.
