By Oke Uje The Delta State Government under the leadership of two former Governors of the state, James Onanefe Ibori and Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, placed education as a focal point of its governance before the arrival of the current Governor of the State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who has also done well in terms of education. Prior to Okowa's administration, there was numerous scholarship schemes by the state government which includes; the Delta State Bursary, DESOPADEC Bursary and Scholarship for First Class Graduates of Delta State origin. It is no doubt that these scholarships and the state educational policies augmented the growth of the educational sector in the state that eventually made the state rank among the bests in terms of literacy and education in Nigeria from 1999 to 2015. However, despite these scholarships made available for Deltans by the state government, Nigerian Law School (NLS) Students of Delta State origin were neglected by the Ibori and Uduaghan's administrations, thereby leaving the Students/Aspirants to solely fund the high cost of attending NLS and being called to Bar. For one to attend the Nigerian Law School and be called to Bar, it will cost an Aspirant closely #500,000 (five hundred thousand naira), and that is why some states government make necessary provisions to assisting their indigenes with financial aids ranging from #150,000 (one hundred and fifty thousand naira) to #1,000,000 (one millionaire naira). The Northern states that are not as rich as Delta state are not left out in awarding financial aids to their Indigenes turned bar Aspirants. When Okowa was sworn in as the Governor of Delta State on the 29th of May 2015, Law Students thought he would do something about the "neglect" but he never did. He failed to render any financial aid or scholarship to 2015, 2016 and 2017 NLS Students and bar Aspirants of Delta State origin. In 2018, after several agitations by over 300 2017/2018 NLS Students of Delta State origin from the six NLS campuses across the country; Abuja, Kano, Lagos, Enugu, Yenagoa and Yola campuses, Aspirants who would be called to bar on the 27th, 28th and 29th of November 2018 respectively, thought things will change for the better and that they would be awarded financial aid by the Okowa led administration. But to their shock, the state government is indifferent and adamant over the matter. They did their best by notifying the NLS through persons selected among themselves, to forward their names to the Delta State Government, which NLS did but nothing has been done by the state government concerning the matter. Despite the disappointment, they are pleading with the state government to assist them financially so that they can fund their call to bar expenses. The state government must know that most of the Aspirants' Parents are down financially after spending a whole lot of money while they were still students in the Nigerian Law School. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1551944624905268&id=100002692371182 Mynd44

Thetruthsayer10:Sorry sire stands to be corrected Mean to say states in the southwest |
Chukazu:Sorry was just stating the obvious. But truly the Yoruba are falling in terms of education. |
Chukazu:Sire the statistic said Delta took first in 2015 while IMO took second. Anambra is more populated than Delta and Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers. IMO is more populated than Bayelsa. Check the population figure of 2006 and verify. |
Chukazu:Do you know you argue blindly. With the schools both private and public universities located in South West , you guys ought to top everything but from statistics being released recently, the Yorubas are no longer going to school. Just imagine Imo, Delta and Anambra topping number of JAMB applicants from 2010 to 2016 and these states don't have the good schools like your region. Delta that topped 2015 medicine admission don't have standard schools like LAGOS, OGUN, OSUN, ONDO, OYO EKITI and the gap they gae these states is so large that even a blind man will know. Am currently a law student of Nigerian Law School, Kano Campus and if the Yorubas don't dominate law then their backsliding in education is obvious. The quota Southwest schools has in Nigerian Law School is more than that of South East and doubles that of South South because they have standard schools. South South has less schools but DELTA is dominating the South West. How come? |
hornyofife:Sire with your information you are not from Niger Delta. The ijaws has more oil than any tribe in Nigeria. Don't conclude without good facts. |
Chukazu:Let me burst your head. Do you know Delta has a single University for professional courses? until FUPRE was established but their quota of admission is still very very very low because is still young and it has few courses. No medicine. In IMO you have IMSU and FUTO with high quota. In Anambra you have ANSU and UNIZIK In Enugu, you have ESUT and UNN but still yet DELTA managed to beat three of them in 2015 medicine admission. DELTA WILL SOON TAKE OVER The two new private universities recently established : Edwin Clarke University and Ibru University will fill the gap We love education in Delta but we have no standard universities compare to South east and south west. Both public and private we don't have but with time Delta will take over |
Chukazu:The igbos in delta State love being part of the state. They don't even want to be called igbo they prefer being called the anioma. They have benefitted from the state in so many ways. I will be also glad if Anambra can join them to their map and take them from Delta. It will only reduce the population and at least better the lives of the other tribes |
CSTR2:Rivers state is dominated by the igbos politically right from 1999 and still they cannot make the list even if we extend it to ten. Delta State that is dominated by the Urhobos politically and otherwise is among the list. The old Bendel state comprises of Edo and Delta and when it was formal Bendel state, the binis and the Urhobos dominated it both educationally and politically. The igbos in delta are the second largest tribe in Delta and with 9 local governments while Urhobos has 8 local governments but still yet, the Urhobos dominates the State University in terms of lecturers and students. All tribes in Delta according to their numbers values education except the ijaws which are coming up now. A deltan igbo won't say this bullshit you just said. Delta cannot be split by you people. Urhobos Deltan Igbos Isokos Ijaws Itshekiris are all one. Don't split us. Edo that don't have igbos took fifth and third position. Where is Rivers State. Bendel state is an educated state not because igbos are in delta but because we value education. The first SAN from Bendel is an Urhobo man. For your information Urhobos, Isoko are not into militancy like the ijaws. And for your information, the aniomas don't have oil that warrant militancy. If the igbos has oil in South east like the South south, they will top militancy. Even with the small oil they produce in IMO the number of militants there overrides that in the Urhobo and Isoko with the Itshekiri Lands combine together. |

Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie, who was removed as deputy speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly has vowed not to return her official cars. She insisted that the vehicles were given to her as gifts by a former governor, Adams Oshiomhole. Ativie and sacked speaker, representing Igueben constituency, Dr. Justin Okonoboh, were impeached on Monday by 19 out of the 24 members of the House. Majority Leader, Foly Ogedengbe, was also removed for “incompetence”. The new Speaker, Kabiru Adjoto, had directed the Clerk of the House, James Omoataman, to retrieve the vehicles and other official items with the impeached principal officers before the close of work on Tuesday. The clerk in a letter of reminder to Ativie, dated August 16, 2017, directed Ativie to return the official vehicles and hand over the keys to him. But Ativie, who represents Uhunmwonde Constituency and the only female member of the House, claimed the vehicles, comprising a 2016 Lexus jeep, one Prado jeep and two Hilux vans, were officially given to her for personal use by Oshiomhole, Punch reports. The lawmaker, in a letter to the clerk dated August 16 signed by her lawyer, Olayiwola Afolabi, stated that Oshiomhole had in a letter he personally signed on June 19, 2016, given the vehicles to her in acknowledgement of the sacrifices she was expected to make for the peace, security and well-being of the state. She stated that Adjoto, who was then the Chief Whip, led the delegation of the House to the executive arm of government where the decision to give her the vehicles was taken and implemented. “After the vehicles were given, our client went to the licence office with the said letter and registered the vehicles in her name. “In the exercise of her bona fide right of ownership, our client has sold one of the vehicles (Lexus jeep, 2016 model),” Ativie’s lawyer said in the letter. A strange disease, whose symptoms include diarrhea, bloodstained vomiting and high fever has killed 50 people at Okunran, Okoloke and Isanlu-Esa villages in Yagba West Local Government of Kogi. Initial reports had suspected lassa Fever, but medics told Dr. Saka Audu, Commissioner for Health, who visited the affected areas on Thursday, that it was a strange diseases that was unknown. “We initially suspected Lassa Fever after getting some misleading reports about people bleeding around, so we made a diagnosis for viral haemorrhagic fever (lassa fever), but the result was negative,” Dr. Jannette Hathorn, a Consultant at ECWA Hospital, Egbe told Audu. She said that the first case was that of a child of two and half years, who died 12 hours after he was brought to the hospital. “We are sure it is not lassa fever; but our concern is that we do not know exactly what is happening. We have not arrived at a definitive diagnosis. “Two adult patients were also brought here; one showed symptoms of ulcer-viral illness, but there was no bleeding component of any haemorrhagic symptom. “We isolated them and both of them were treated for malaria. When they started improving, we let them go. “Another parent brought a child to the hospital and pleaded for help. He said that 50 people had died in their village with similar symptoms of bloodstained vomiting, diarrhea and fever. “When the child died, we called the World Health Organisation (WHO). Yesterday (Wednesday), their officials came and took samples of everything; we must know exactly what we are dealing with,” she said. Audu, who described the situation as “serious”, said that the visit was to assess the it “especially since many lives have been lost to the disease”. “We want to determine the cause of these mysterious deaths and then proffer solution to it. “Government is committed to assisting the people irrespective of how remote their settlements may be. We must ensure that we take healthcare to the door steps of rural dwellers. “We want to reassure the people that government is with them and will take full responsibility of those who are already ill, so as to arrest the spread of this disease. “For now, what is clear and confirmed is that it is not lassa fever; but whatever it is, we will carry out further investigation and come up with definitive diagnosis,” Audu said. He said that the information about the outbreak of the strange disease came to government last week and a technical team was immediately sent to take samples which were sent to General Hospital Irrua, Edo State, for definitive investigation. “We are digging into the real cause of this ailment. All hands are on deck toward unraveling the definitive cause of the mysterious deaths among the kids,” the commissioner assured. According to him, the Fulani settlers have been reported to be the worst hit by the disease which broke out three weeks ago. Ardo Damina Ibrahim, leader of the Fulani settlement, told newsmen that the first case was reported three weeks ago, adding that children were worst hit. “We at first used herbs to treat the patients but had to rush to the hospital after recording several deaths,” he said. He explained that parents became more confused when doctors could not ascertain the cause of the illness, saying that many died in the hospital while others were discharged without any cure. “We have lost more than 50 people and still have many helpless patients at home,’’ he said. Oba Joshua Ogunyanda, the traditional ruler of the community, who thanked the commissioner for visiting the area in spite of the difficult terrain, said that he ran to the Yagba Local Government when the disease broke out. “We are confident that the disease will soon be brought under control with the commitment that you have shown,” he said. The commissioner later gave N50,000 to the leader of the Fulani community to transport the sick patients to Lokoja for proper treatment. A 10-year old girl in India who had been raped, but whose abortion plea was turned down by the country’s Supreme Court, on Thursday delivered a baby. Both the minor and the baby girl were safe at the state-run hospital in northern city of Chandigarh, according to Dasari Harish, chairman of the committee which was set up to treat and take care of the girl. “The girl is stable. The infant has been admitted to the neo-natal intensive care unit for quick recovery,’’ he said by phone from Chandigarh. The girl was repeatedly raped by her uncle over several months. The crime came to light when the girl was taken to hospital complaining of stomachache in July, and was found to be over 20 weeks into the pregnancy. Her uncle was arrested shortly afterwards. Indian law prohibits medical termination of pregnancies after 20 weeks except when the mother’s life is at risk. Lawyers had approached the Supreme Court on behalf of her parents but the judges refused their plea to allow an exception. More than 300 people were killed when a mudslide struck the outskirts of Sierra Leone’s capital Freetown on Monday, sweeping away homes. The Red Cross said at least 205 bodies had been taken to the central morgue in Freetown. Police and military personnel were at the scene in the mountain town of Regent searching for people trapped in the debris. The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are recovered, Red Cross spokesman Abu Bakarr Tarawallie said. Vice President Victor Foh told Reuters at the scene: “It is likely that hundreds are lying dead underneath the rubble.” He said a number of illegal buildings had been erected in the area. “The disaster is so serious that I myself feel broken,” he said. “We’re trying to cordon the area. Evacuate the people.” Standing in the rain, people cried and gestured toward a muddy hillside where dozens of houses once stood, a Reuters witness said. “We were asleep when we heard the noise of one of the walls falling down. By the time we got up water was flowing in and the whole house was flooded,” said 36-year-old Salimatu Bangura. She escaped, but her brother died, she said. Mudslides and floods are fairly common during the rainy season in West Africa, where deforestation and poor town planning has put residents at risk. Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has refuted reports linking him to a statement that those agitating for restructuring were political jobbers. Mr Laolu Akande, the acting president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, stated a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, that Chief Ayo Adebanjo reportedly connected the acting president to the assertion. The presidential spokesman stated that at no time did the acting president say that those asking for restructuring were political jobbers looking for appointments. He said: “The video, audio tapes and full text of his speech at the National Security summit organised last week by the Department of State Services (DSS) are publicly available. “While several newspapers and media outlets reported Osinbajo’s speech last Wednesday, not one of the publications made such a blatantly inaccurate claim that he said those asking for restructuring were political jobbers. “Besides, the debate on restructuring is an important one and the calls for restructuring cover a wide range of legitimate and constitutionally valid issues.’’ According to the presidential aide, all Nigerians have both a right and a duty to advance their arguments on whether Nigeria should be restructured or not. Akande recalled that the acting president had once expressed support for State Police based on the community policing model, advocated for devolution of powers to the States and fiscal federalism. “Besides, the Buhari administration has been active in supporting State rights in several ways, including in fiscal matters and will continue to do so,’’ he added. A federal court in Rio de Janeiro sentenced a Brazilian judge to eight years imprisonment on Tuesday for driving confiscated luxury vehicles, local media reported. Judge Flavio Souza, who was presiding over criminal proceedings against former billionaire Eike Batista, was removed from office in 2015 after he was caught driving Batista’s Porsche Cayenne in Rio. The judge also kept another luxury car confiscated from Batista in his garage, as well as a piano and several Rolex watches. They were seized by a court from Batista, once Brazil’s richest man, because of his high debts, the O Globo news portal reported. In 2012, Batista had a net worth of 30 billion dollars, making him the seventh wealthiest person in the world, according to Forbes magazine. His wealth plummeted due to strategic mistakes, a drop in oil prices, falling stock prices and criminal proceedings following corruption allegations. Most of his fortune was made from investments in mining and oil and gas exploration. Mynd44 http://www.eyereport.com.ng/brazilian-judge-jailed-for-driving-porsche/ |

Archaeologists may have found in the Israel, the lost Roman city of Julias, home to three Apostles of Jesus Christ. Peter, Andrew and Philip are believed to have resided in the lost city of Julias, which may have existed on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, Haaretz reports. It was Jewish historian Josephus Flavius (37-100 AD) who first indicated the existence of the city of Julias, which he said had been built on or near the fishing village of Bethsaida, by King Philip, the son of the biblical King Herod. He created the Roman city and called it Julias after Julia Augusta, mother of Roman Emperor Tiberius. According to MSN, Archaeologist Dr Mordechai Aviam of Kinneret College, told Haaretz: “Josephus reported that the king had upgraded Bethsaida from a village into a polis, a proper city. “He didn’t say it had been built on or beside or underneath it. And indeed, all this time, we have not known where it was. But the bathhouse attests to the existence of urban culture. “Our main surprise was that at the bottom of the excavation, in a small area, a wall of a building was discovered, and next to it was a mosaic floor and artifacts that characterise a bathhouse.” The mosaic wall is an indication that a church once stood there. A bishop of Bavaria, who visited Israel in 725 AD, spoke of visiting a church at Bethsaida that was built over the house of Peter and Andrew. Another reason Julias is likely to be located at the site, called el-Araj, has to do with an error about the level of the Sea of Galilee.
