Politics / Ojukwu Fought Isaac Adaka Boro After The Declaration Of Niger Delta Republic by atorioke(m): 8:35pm On Sep 09, 2019
THE HISTORY OF NIGER DELTA PEOPLE (PART ONE) By OKE NATHANIEL ATORI.

ISAAC ADAKA BORO AND THE BIAFRANS BLAME GAME.

Attn:

1. The Igbos insulting Isaac Adaka Boro for fighting against Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War.
2. ‎Niger Deltans with no or little knowledge of the struggle by Isaac Adaka Boro.
3. ‎Nigerians.

Isaac Adaka Boro who was born on September 10, 1938, fondly called 'Boro' was an Ijaw, a Soldier and pioneer of Niger Delta rights activism in Nigeria. Boro started his activism for the rights of Niger Deltans from when he was the Students' Union President at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), till the time he declared Niger Delta Republic in February 23rd, 1966.

• WHY BORO DECLARED NIGER DELTA REPUBLIC.

Boro declared Niger Delta Republic because he believed the Niger Delta region deserved a larger share of the oil wealth.

His grievance was that the oil proceeds/wealth benefitted mainly the Federal Government of Nigeria led by Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi (an Igbo), and the Eastern Region Government whose Governor was Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Igbo) with its capital in Enugu, and nothing was given to the Niger Delta people.

Prior to this, Boro had taken civil steps to accord the people of Niger Delta in the Eastern region a voice but was frustrated by the Igbo dominated party, National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons, NCNC. [check first comment for details].

• THE 12 DAYS WAR.

The Federal Government led by Aguiyi-Ironsi and with allegiance from the Eastern region; headed by Odumegwu Ojukwu, Western region headed by Francis Adekunle Fajuyi; who was appointed by Aguiyi-Ironsi, fought Boro and his Comrades and against the actualization of Niger Delta Republic. The war lasted for a short period of twelve (12) days which saw the defeat of Boro and his Comrades.

Isaac Adaka Boro stood for his people (Niger Deltans) throughout the 12 days war, he didn't surrender, fought the Federal Government until he was defeated.

• WHAT HAPPENED NEXT.

Subsequent to his defeat, Boro and his Comrades were jailed by Aguiyi-Ironsi until his regime was ousted by a counter-coup led by Theophilus Danjuma, Major Ibrahim Badamusi Babangida and General Murtala on 29th-30th July 1966, and Boro was granted amnesty by Aguiyi-Ironsi's successor, Yakubu Gowon, on the eve of Nigerian Civil war. Aguiyi-Ironsi did for the Ijaw what Boro actually fought for. [read second comment for details].

Boro then listed and was commissioned as a Major in the Nigerian Army and fought on the side of the Federal Government against the Biafran Army led by Odumegwu Ojukwu.

Politics / We Were Not Been Paid By DSB/DSBSB - 2017/2018 NLS Students Of Delta Origin by atorioke(m): 7:26pm On Feb 04, 2019
The Governor of Delta State, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, approved the payment of bursary/scholarship for Students of Delta State origin in various higher institutions all over the country and also 2015/2016, 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 Nigerian Law School(NLS) Students of Delta State origin.

The approval made the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board (DSBSB) to forward text messages to 2017/2018 NLS Students of Delta State origin, as Beneficiaries, to attend the screening exercise to verify their details and also enable them receive payments.

During the screening exercise in Asaba, the state's capital, and under media coverage, the Scholarship Board informed the Beneficiaries that they shall receive the sum of one hundred thousand naira (N100,000) each and that shall be effected soonest after the end of the screening exercise.

However, in January, 2019, only Beneficiaries from 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 NLS sets were paid the sum of N100,000 each while Beneficiaries from 2017/2018; who made several efforts to making sure the payment is a reality, were left and one will wonder if they are no longer regarded as Beneficiaries of the said bursary.

"Despite this disappointment from Delta State Government and the Scholarship Board, we the Beneficiaries were still hopeful and kept pushing to ensure that we are finally paid and along the line, we heard from a reliable source that the funds for payment have not been approved by the government as against the assurance the Scholarship Board gave us during the screening exercise.

"The recent development we were fed with was that the funds for the payment has been finally approved by the State Government and it is now left for the commisioner of finance to release the funds so that the Scholarship Board can disburse it to Beneficiaries.

"I know with time, more stories will spring up and in such case, we don't know what and who to believe as regards this matter," a Beneficiary said.

The Delta State Government under the leadership of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has done well in terms of Infrastructures; construction of roads across the twenty-five (25) Local Government Areas of the State; Sports: successful completion of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, successful hosting of the Senior African Athletics Championships, amongst others.

Other areas where the State Government has done so well include payment of salaries: up to date payment of salaries of civil servants; Health: implementation of Universal Health Coverage, Delta State contributory health care scheme and other health programmes.

Also to mention are the areas of Empowerment: disbursements of N835m to 600 entrepreneurship and other groups; Education: accreditation of Law Faculty of Delta State University, providing good learning environments for Students in all the state-owned educational institutions and providing various scholarships/bursaries for Students.

On the area of scholarship and bursary, the state government has been impartial and transparent in awarding scholarships and bursaries to indigenes of the state because right from time, there is no form of segregation which 2017/2018 are bringing to the notice of the government.

"This segregation by the State Government and the Scholarship Board partaining to this bursary has stirred a lot of arguments from the opinion that we have been used for political campaigns which I am strongly against but it has worked a lot of hardship trying to argue otherwise, and it has also caused some persons financial hardship in the long run.

"On receiving the text messages, some of us who were in the northern part of the country and also far away from Delta State had to pay the expensive transport fare in December, 2018, so as to meet up with the screening exercise that was held that same December.

"Some persons spent over thirty thousand naira (N30,000) coming to Delta State and going back to their respective states where they are currently undergoing their one(1) year National Youth Service with the hope that they will receive payment in the month of January, 2019, as earlier promised by the Board.

"At this juncture, we plead passionately with Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Delta State Scholarship Board to remain impartial and transparent with the awarding of bursaries and scholarships by quickening the procedures for the payment of 2017/2018 Beneficiaries, if Okowa cares, he should care on this matter," another Beneficiary said.

Politics / Suspicious Misappropriation Of Funds In NYSC, Ogun State. by atorioke(m): 6:46pm On Dec 06, 2018
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a programme managed by the Federal Government (FG) in collaboration with States of the Federation and from the onset, it is the FG that pays all serving corps members the 19800 Monthly allowance.

Some states of the Federation pay Corpers additional monthly allowances for Corpers serving in their states so as to make life better for Corpers while they serve the nation.

It is within the public awareness that Ogun State doesn't pay Corpers a dime and for that reason, corpers rely solely on the 19800 allowances paid by the FG.

It is an established fact that FG doesn't owe Corpers allowances because they pay all Corpers for complete twelve months that they will serve the Nation.

Going straight to unpaid allowances which is where the misappropriation comes in, there are instances where some Corpers might not be paid their allowances in a particular month due to some errors or not participating in that monthly clearance. However, after complaints, they are to be paid later on.

But that is not the case in Ogun State where Corpers rely solely on the 19800. In Ogun, after making applications for unpaid allowances, Corpers have been told that they should forget about their unpaid allowances; both those who couldn't clear and those who cleared and were not paid. The question is, where is the money going to?

Ogun State is currently owing so many Corpers unpaid allowances for either a month or several months and the hope of Corpers for future reimbursement have been killed by that statement "you should forget about it." Who is receiving those monies?

The orientation Corpers got was that Federal Government will pay them the allowances for complete twelve (12) months.

But the way Ogun state is handling the monthly payments, some corpers are being owed 2, 3, 4 or more months monthly allowances and most of the corpers cannot make online publication due to the fear that they will be punished by NYSC.

FG should investigate what is going on in Ogun state and trash the matter as some Corpers serving in Ogun state are currently experiencing hunger "a curse" in due to unpaid monthly allowances.

Politics / Stingines Of Okowa Made Referee To Cancel The Two Super Eagles' Goals - Oke Uje by atorioke(m): 1:15pm On Nov 19, 2018
There were so many comments over the match between South Africa and Nigeria played on the 17th of November 2018 at the FNB stadium in South Africa.

While majority of people are blaming the Referee for cancelling the two goals scored by Super Eagles to offsides, a DELTAN, Oke Uje, has expressed his opinion saying that it is the Stinginess of Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa that is behind the cancellation.

He said it is the Stinginess of Okowa which decided to go spiritual and no longer physical that made the Referee to deny Nigeria those two deserving goals.

Romance / Without Regular Sex Women Risk Mental Disorder - Psychiatrist by atorioke(m): 6:09am On Nov 18, 2018
By Lydia Ngwakwe

A psychiatrist, Dr Maymunah Kadiri on Saturday advised married women to have regular sex with their spouses in order to prevent depression and gain happiness.

Depression is a common mental disorder that causes people to experience depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor concentration.

Kadiri, the Medical Director of Pinnacle Medical Services gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Pinnacle is a health and wellness centre for psychological, behavioral, and mental health related issues.

According to her, sex is not just to nourish a woman’s body, but it is also beneficial to her mental health.

“As women, there is need for us to make our spouses our best friends if we want to be mentally healthy.

“Studies have shown that women who have more active sex and in long term relationships were less likely to be depressed than women who went without sex.

“So, more sex is important and essential. It is a remedy to curing women from having persistent headache.

“Low sexual drive, which leads to depression, should be looked into. A woman can be depressed when that sexual drive that she used to have is no more there.

“Frequent active sex can play good roles toward women’s sense of well being and quality of life,’’ Kadiri said.

She explained that sex was not just for procreation and to have children, adding that it could create bonding, good companionship and sound sleep.

Kadiri, popularly called ‘celebrity shrink’, urged women dealing with depression to frequently indulge in sex, while boosting their self-esteem.

She also advised women who are over-weight to also involve in active sex, saying doing so will boost endorphins which are happy hormones.

“The happy hormones will make them lose some calories as well as sleep better.

”Orgasms trigger the release of endorphins which are happy hormones secreted by the brain that act as effective painkillers,’’ she said.

She added that sex was not only beneficial to the men, but especially to women because it was capable of freeing them from stress.

Politics / Oshiomhole Meets Buhari, Dismisses Corruption Allegations by atorioke(m): 6:55am On Nov 17, 2018
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adams Oshiomhole, has dismissed allegations that he collected bribes of about 80 million dollars to manipulate the outcome of the party primaries in some states and FCT.

Some agrieved aspirants are accusing Oshiohmole of collecting various sums in bribery to twist the primaries.

Speculations are also gaining currency that he was last week interrogated by the Department of State Service (DSS) over the outcome of the recently conducted APC primaries.

An online media outfit which allegedly accused the APC chairman of collecting about 80 million dollars in bribes, however, reported that Oshiomhole had become a target after refusing 500,000 dollars bribe cash from one of the aggrieved APC governors.

It reported that the affected governor had wanted the APC chairman to adopt his anointed governorship candidate.

“It was gathered that many godfathers and governorship candidates were desperate for tickets but Oshiomhole stood his ground that he will not compromise party guidelines,’’ it further stated.

But, Oshiomhole, who spoke to State House correspondents after a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, described the allegations of corruption against him as reckless insinuation.

“No tree that will bear fruits that will grow in Sahara desert and the fact the publisher of Saharareporters himself is a presidential aspirant we would soon find out the difference between Sahara and its reporters, and a green forest and its reporters.

“The unfortunate thing here, however, is that people, who specialize in libels they take advantage of our peculiar judicial system.

“When I was a governor in Edo state, they published all kinds of things against me. At a point I decided to go to court and my lawyer told me that I have to be ready to enter the witness box to make my case – whether I was ready to go through that humiliation.

“What is in the governorship? Before I became the governor I entered the witness box and I know after being governor I can still go back there one day. So I went there and I won the case. They awarded damages in my favour.

“But by the time you want to check the process of the guy who libeled you and so on, he sales himself everything put together he could not compensate for by legal fee not to talk of really mitigating my paying as a result of the judgment,’’ he said.

On the forthcoming campaign programmes of the APC, Oshiohmole revealed that the party’s campaign for the 2019 presidential election would focus on character and integrity of the key candidates.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Buhari is the APC presidential candidate while the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is presenting former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its candidate.

According to the party chairman, the APC is fully ready to flag off the campaigns soon.

He said: “We are fully ready, we have done with our primaries and filled our nominations.

“As you know, INEC still has a window between now and first of January to deal with issues of substitution. As of campaigns, we are ready.

“We are going to announce the date and programme for our campaigns. My idea of kick-off will be the day we will do our first presidential rally where Mr President as our candidate and other candidates, party leaders will assemble in a venue that will be agreeable to all of us.

“There will be two sets of messages. One, on what we have done in the past, without failing to remind people of where we were before, what we are going to do in the next four years, and a couple of things we believe we will be doing differently.

“President Buhari if compared to the rest of the candidates, there is no basis to compare day and night. The real issue in this election is not going to be religion. It is not going to be about ethnicity.

“Central to the issue and given our past experience as a country, we know that what makes a difference is the character, the issue of integrity of the candidates.’’

According to Oshiomhole, the campaign is going to be focusing on character and integrity of those who want to govern the country.

Crime / Monkey Kills Baby Boy After Snatching Him From His Mother by atorioke(m): 6:51am On Nov 16, 2018
A 12-day-old baby died after a monkey snatched him from his breastfeeding mother and left him bruised and bitten on the terrace of a neighbour’s house in Mohalla Kachhera area northern state of Uttar Pradesh, in India.

According to The Indian Express, the monkey was said to have ran into the house and grabbed the baby by his neck while efforts to rescue the infant failed as family members later found the baby lying blood-soaked on a neighbour’s terrace.

The baby was rushed to a hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead, the family members said.

Not ready to believe it, the family took him to another hospital, but to no avail.

Eco-activist Shravan Kumar said monkeys are turning aggressive as their natural habitats have been destroyed and green cover is steadily shrinking.

Residents said the monkeys loot, snatch and attack people, particularly women and children in Agra.

“People do not dare to go to their terraces. Those who do have sealed their homes with iron mesh cages. You cannot leave your door open or sit in the sun,” a resident of Vijay Nagar colony Seema Gupta said.

The father of the boy said the monkey grabbed the boy by the neck and ran off before his breastfeeding mother, Neha, could act.

According to Agra Police Assistant Superintendent Abhishek, neighbours rushed to help after hearing the mother’s screams.

Foreign Affairs / I Have Never Used A Computer - Japan's Cybersecurity Minister by atorioke(m): 11:45pm On Nov 15, 2018
Japan’s Cybersecurity Minister says never used a computer
Japan’s Cybersecurity Minister says never used a computer
A Japanese Minister, Yoshitaka Sakurada in charge of the Government’s cybersecurity strategy has drawn controversy after admitting that he has never used a computer.

Sakurada, 68, said this during a parliamentary session that he has never used a computer in his life, as he “has been doing business independently since 25 years old and has been giving instructions to staff and secretaries.’’

When asked by independent lawmaker Masato Imai about how a man who does not use computers could be responsible for cybersecurity measures, Sakurada said that cybersecurity is “a matter that should be dealt with by the government as a whole’’ and that he is confident that he is not at fault.

Sakurada was appointed the minister in charge of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games as well as cyber minister in October in a Cabinet reshuffled after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was re-elected head of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

The minister from the ruling LDP has been known for a long time for his ill-advised comments, most notably in 2016 when he claimed that “comfort women,’’ women forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army before and during World War II, were “prostitutes by occupation.’’

He later retracted the remarks.

Crime / Boko Haram Fighters Attack Military Base In Borno by atorioke(m): 10:16pm On Nov 15, 2018
At least three soldiers were killed and several missing after a Boko Haram attack on a military base in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state, military and militia sources told AFP Thursday.

Boko Haram fighters believed to be from the IS-affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province late Wednesday attacked the base in the town of Kareto, 150 kilometres (about 90 miles) north of the state capital Maiduguri.

The militants temporarily dislodged troops from the base before being repelled with aerial support, the sources said.

“We lost three soldiers in the fight and several others are still missing,” a military officer in Maiduguri told AFP.

“The terrorists were smoked out of the base by a fighter jet which deployed to the scene,” said the officer who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the incident.

Troop reinforcements were sent to the base, the officer said. It was not clear if the jihadists took away weapons.

A civilian militia fighting Boko Haram in the area said troops withdrew to the town of Gubio, 60 km away, while Kareto residents fled across the border into Niger.

“The bodies of three soldiers were recovered after the attack,” said the militia who preferred not to be identified.

“More troops have arrived in Kareto but most residents have not returned,” he said.

It was the second attack on the military base in two years.

In April 2016, a Boko Haram raid left 24 soldiers wounded, according to military authorities.

Boko Haram jihadists late Wednesday also attacked Mammanti village, just outside Maiduguri, killing one person and burning the entire village before stealing hundreds of cattle, the local chief of the village and residents said.

“The insurgents came around 11:00 pm (2200 GMT) and opened indiscriminate fire,” Muhammad Mammanti, a resident, said.

“They killed one person and burnt the whole village and stole our cattle,” Mammanti said.

Earlier in the day a group of jihadists abducted seven women while working on a farm near the town of Bama, 70 km from Maiduguri, after killing their male escort, militia sources said.

Boko Haram has stepped up attacks on farmers and loggers in recent years, accusing them of passing information on the group to the military.

Despite the government’s insistence that the group is near defeat, Boko Haram has recently carried out major attacks on military and civilian targets, killing scores.

More than 27,000 people have died since the start of the insurgency in the remote northeast in 2009 and 1.8 million are still homeless.

Food / Four Family Members Die, Others Hospitalised After Eating AMALA by atorioke(m): 9:48pm On Nov 15, 2018
By Usman Aliyu

Four members of a family in Ilorin were feared dead after the consumption of `amala’ meal, suspected to be poisonous.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that four others who took from the meal, had also been hospitalised at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).

The incident happened at Magaji-Ogo community behind Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies, in Ilorin West Local Government Area.

A source told NAN that the victims took the meal on Sunday night before three of them were found dead the following morning.

According to him, the fourth casualty, who was the head of the family, died on Wednesday.

“Those feared dead are the family head, his sister and two children, while those recuperating in the hospital are the mother and three other children.

“The corpses of the deceased had been buried in accordance with Islamic rite. They were eight that took the meal.

“Though we are not sure yet of the cause of death, the meal was taken alongside amphibian and there is a suspicion that they died of poisoning.

“Officials from the state Ministry of Health were in the community to take samples of the meal for test but nothing was yet to be said of the findings,’’ the source said.

The family, NAN learnt, is an extension of the Histrict Head of Adewole, popularly known as Alangua Adewole in Ilorin.

Meanwhile, Dr Oluwatosin Fakayode, Director, Public Health and Disease Control in the state Ministry of Health, confirmed the incident.

He, however, said that the ministry was yet to identify the cause of the “ugly and unfortunate occurrence.”

Fakayode told NAN that samples from the meal were taken for laboratory investigation, which would be out within the next 24 hours.

“As it stands, it is difficult to say the cause until the result is out.

“However, we are definite that it is food poison because of the symptoms, but we are not sure of the food item that is culpable.

“We learnt they took these amphibian that they hawk around with it. So we are not sure if it is the source of the death because some of them are poisonous.

“Though we have not identified the culprit in terms of whether it is organism or chemical, definitely, it is a symptom of food poison.

“But our suspicion is the amphibian. It could be preservatives that were used on the items that were used for the meal,’’ he said.

When a NAN correspondent sought confirmation of the Police in Kwara on the incident, its spokesman, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi, said the command was not aware of the incident.
