AgricultureRe: Human Urine Is Better And Easily Available Than Fertiliser - Specialist by atorioke(op): 10:14pm On Jul 08, 2017
atorioke:
An environmental engineer and a lecturer, Mr Isaac Bryant, has said the conversion of human urine into fertiliser and other products would have higher environmental value.

“Urine, which most of us consider as waste, is a valuable resource which we can use directly as fertiliser.

“Urine is very safe, hygienic, easy to handle and collect, and easily available,“ Bryant, a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.

He made this known at the 2017 African Clean Up Conference taking place in Cape Coast with the theme: “Exploring New Horizon and Sustainable Best Practices in Waste Management and Recycling’’.

The conference which was organised by a Non Governmental Organization (NGO), African Clean-up Initiative, is committed to promoting environmental activities in communities and schools.

Bryant said that human urine was part of domestic waste water, which could be used as fertiliser.

He said using urine as fertiliser posed minimal health risk to both the environment and human beings.

“Rather than use chemical fertiliser for crops, human urine is better.

“We can use human urine to cultivate crops such as maize, okro, tomato, pepper, garden eggs and some other vegetables,’’ he told NAN.

According to the lecturer, use of human urine as fertiliser would reduce public discharge of the urine and promote a clean and safe environment.

CelebritiesRe: Nigeria Summons Cameroon's Envoy Over Killing Of Nigerians In Bakassi by atorioke(op): 4:55pm On Jul 08, 2017
atorioke:
The ministry has instructed the Nigerian Missions in Yaounde and Buea, to investigate the report with a view to confirming their veracity and inform Headquarters immediately.

The Nigerian Government has summoned Cameroon’s High Commissioner, Amb. Abbas Salahedine, to explain the report of maltreatment and killings of Nigerians in the Bakassi Peninsula by Cameroonian Gendarmes.

Foreign Affairs ministry’s Spokesperson, Mrs Jane Adams, expressed dismay on the incident.

Adams said the Nigerian citizens in Bakassi are reported to have been subjected to harassment for alleged non-payment of taxes on fishing activities.

“The ministry has instructed the Nigerian Missions in Yaounde and Buea, to investigate the report with a view to confirming their veracity and inform Headquarters immediately.

“The ministry appeals to the Cameroonian authorities to exercise their duty of care and protection over the people of Bakassi, including other Nigerian citizens in the area,” she said.

Reports at the disposal of the Nigeria government say no fewer than 97 Nigerians were killed as Cameroon Gendarmes allegedly attacked residents of Bakassi over failure to pay a N100,000 boat levy.

The report stated that the attackers sacked mainly Nigerians from Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Ondo states.

Many others were however said to have escaped at midnight with their fishing boats and arrived at Ikang in Bakassi and Ibaka in Akwa Ibom.

The killing and sacking of Nigerians in former Bakassi is believed to be a violation of the 2005 Green Tree Agreement (GTA) by the Nigeria-Cameroon Mixed Commission.

The Agreement stipulated that the Bakassi returnees must be properly resettled to their natural habitat so that they can have a meaningful living.

The GTA also states that Nigerians who choose to remain in Cameroon can do so without any molestation.

PoliticsMy Brother, Uncles’ Names In List To Recall Me – Dino Melaye by atorioke(op): 12:42pm On Jul 08, 2017
Senator Dino Melaye, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, has revealed that his own brother and some of his uncles’ names appeared in list of people who want him recalled.

Melaye made this known in an exclusive interview with Sun, adding that Governor Yahaya Bello was the worst leader the state has ever had.

Melaye said, “Yahaya Bello did not vote for me, he is not a member of my constituency, he has no electoral value as far as my seat in the Senate is concerned. So he has no power to recall me.

“So he sat down with his appointees, and got INEC data, then directly transferred names from INEC register to the recall list.

“Do you know that my blood brother’s name is on that list? Do you know that two of my uncles from Takete who are immediate brothers to my mother, their names are on that list?

“And we have also discovered that there were a lot of ghosts, a lot of dead people, their names are on the list.

“In some instances, the names of some people on the list supersede the required number of eligible voters and registered voters in the INEC register

“And I’m telling you on good authority that he’s the worst governor in the history of Kogi State.

“And because of my agitation for the welfare of the workers and pensioners of Kogi State, he orchestrated an assassination attempt on me the first time, it failed. He organized the second attempt; it failed to the glory of God."

PropertiesCustoms E-auction: Many Will Lose Their Cars by atorioke(op): 6:22pm On Jul 07, 2017
Many Nigerians see the recently launched e-auction by the Nigerian Customs Service as an easy and cheap means of acquiring a car.

However, what many of these Nigerians are not aware of is the implication of some of the terms and conditions of the electronic sales.

For instance, number 8 in the terms and condition of the sales states: “Take note for overtime cargo, that the successful bidder shall in addition pay 25% charges for Shipping Line and Terminal operators respectively.

Among the terms and conditions on the site, number 8 was the only one that the Nigerian Customs Service emboldened to lay emphasis.

A staff of the service who spoke to our correspondent explained that many of the cars up for auction had over stayed at the terminals and as such attracted overtime charges.

He explained that most of them have already incurred overtime charges while also still owing the shipping line that brought in the vehicles.

“So for some of these overtime cargo the person who wins the car shall pay in addition 25 oer cent of his bid as overtime cargo and another 25 per cent as cost of shipping.

“If someone wins a bid at N100,000 it means that the person will pay an additional N25,000 for overtime cargo and N25,000 for the shipping line,” he said.

He added that all the cars up for auction had already attracted overtime cargo charges stressing that the shipping cost on most of them had yet to be paid for since such payment are usually made at the point of clearing.

Our correspondent who took time to speak with a cross section of Nigerians reports that many of them were unaware of the implications of this and other conditions stipulated in the e-auction.

A civil servant Mrs Taiye Edeni admitted that she was unaware of the implication of that provision.

She said: “If that is so then i will review my Budget”.

A business man Abraham Alfred however said that he would forget about the gidding it it is so as he was not cut out for any extra expenses after winning.

He said he already planned to bid with all he has leaving only ample money to travel to the terminal to retrieve his vehicle.

Other respondents who spoke also admitted to not knowing the real implication of the terms and conditions stipulated by the NIS.

The terms and conditions giver a successful bidder only two weeks to move the cars they have won out of the terminal.

This means that they should have paid the full bid price and 25 per cent each of bid amount for overtime cargo charges and for shipping line.

It further stated that failure to clear the cars within two weeks it will revert to its pre-bidding status.

“The successful Bidder has two (2) weeks from the date of payment to remove the item bidded for or forfeit same at the expiration of the two (2) weeks.

“Any auction item not removed from the warehouse within fourteen (14) days from the date of payment shall revert to its pre-bidding status.

PoliticsOsinbajo Held Meeting With SANs For 5 Hours, Before Insisting On Keeping Magu by atorioke(op): 6:53am On Jul 07, 2017
The Presidency’s insistence on Ibrahim Magu as Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chief may have been strengthened by opinions of legal giants, The Nation has learnt.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo said yesterday in Kaduna that Magu would not be removed. The Senate is insisting on Magu’s removal, saying it will shun nominations from the Executive if the EFCC chief remains.

Some legal experts, including Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) met for about five hours on Wednesday night to review the “Magu issue and the Senate’s threat”.

The Presidency, it was learnt, was told to keep Magu because it had valid constitutional reasons to do so. The experts relied on Section 171 of the 1999 Constitution.

Besides, they endorsed EFCC’s and Magu’s decision to seek the consolidation of all the cases on his status in court.

The agency has written a letter to the Federal High Court, pleading for the consolidation of six suits.

In a letter to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, Magu and the EFCC stressed “the fact that the reliefs sought in the matters(six) and the subject matter are the same”.

The letter, written by the counsel to the two parties, Wahab Shittu Esq, is titled, “Re: Humble appeal for consolidation of the underlisted matters.”

“The matters are:

Suit No. FHC/ ABJ/ CS/ 225/2017 Registered Trustees of African Patriotic Youth Assembly vs. Ibrahim Magu and six Ors., pending before His Lordship Justice A.R. Mohammed of Court 8 and presently adjourned to 27th September, 2017.
Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/159/2017 John Mary Chukwukasi Jideobi vs. The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and three Ors., pending before His Lordship Justice Quadri of Court 10 and presently adjourned to 10th October 2017.

Suit by Jibrin Samuel Okutepa(SAN)
“This humble request is to avoid multiplicity of suits in respect of the same subject matter and also forestall possible conflicting judgments. Please find herewith attached front-page copies of each of the matters; the subject matter of this humble application. We will appreciate your approval of this humble request,” Shittu wrote.

Meanwhile, for about five hours, the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, met with some Senior Advocates of Nigeria and legal on Wednesday night on the legal battle on Magu.

A source said the session ended at about 1am on Thursday.

The source said: “At the session, the experts said the Presidency has a valid constitutional reason to keep Magu in office by virtue of Section 171 of the 1999 Constitution.

“They also said the decision of the Senate to reject the consideration of all nominations from the Executive because of Magu was subjudice to the ongoing matters in court.

“They asked the government to seek the interpretation of Section 171 of the 1999 Constitution in court.

“The government was also advised to declare its confidence in Magu. This informed the position of the government yesterday, declaring that its choice for the EFCC job remains Magu.”

A Nigerian man on facebook, Falex Oluwagbotemi, shared photos of his 5-year-old boy smoking shisha.

The pictures got lots of people wondering why a father would open his young son to such ridiculous behaviour.

Rose Nzanegbe, one of the man’s friend, who could not fathom the pictures, lambasted him, saying: “You are exposing your son to great danger.”

But he replied the concerned friend, saying: ‘”He’s over 5 years, he knows what is good for him.”

CrimeMutiu Ogundare, Baale Of Magodo Kidnapped By 3 Gunmen by atorioke(op): 9:15am On Jul 06, 2017
The Baale of Shangisha in Magodo, Lagos, Chief Mutiu Ogundare, on Wednesday, was abducted by three men along Center for Management Development (CMD) Road, Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The baale was said to have received a phone call from alleged developers, who had indicated interest in a landed property within his domain.

The callers told the Baale where to meet them, prompting Ogundare to drive to the address with one of his brothers.

On arriving the location, the three men appealed to the Baale and his brother to join them in their White Toyota Venza so that they could go see the land.

On their way, it was gathered that the Baale’s brother noticed one of the men had a gun on him and he raised alarm.

And the suspected kidnapper pushed the baale’s brother out of the vehicle and sped off with the Baale.

After reporting the matter to the police, the command’s spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said it was not a kidnap.

He said there has been protracted dispute between Ogundare, one Shittu Lawal and another person.

According to Famous-Cole, it was a case of rivalry between two Baales, adding that investigation had commenced.

He said: “The White Venza had no registration number. They drove to CMD Guest House to meet the people who called that they wanted to check a land. It was there that they joined the suspect’s vehicle on appeal so that they could take them to the land. I cannot say if the Baale has regained freedom unless I receive additional information from the men in the field.”

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has said that Nigerians must do everything possible to stop the Biafra agitation led by Nnamdi Kanu.

He warned that failure to do so could lead to a replay of the 1966 coup and the events that led to unprecedented bloodshed in the country.

Obasanjo made this known during the launch of the biography of late Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari on Tuesday at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

According to him, the top most lessons for Nigerians to learn from unfolding events in the country are that the nation has had enough of tragedies.

He said: “What lesson can we learn? The lesson we can learn is that we have had enough tragedies in this country.

“So far, since 1999, it seems that we have got it right. Let us hope that we continue to get it right and learn that Nigeria has had enough of bloodshed, enough of sacrifices by those victims, that Nigeria deserves peace, unity and progress,” Obasanjo asserted.

PoliticsRe: Court Adjourns Olisah Metuh's Case Until October 23 by atorioke(op): 8:36pm On Jul 04, 2017
atorioke:
The court adjourned the trial because the court is due to commence its annual vacation on July 10.

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday adjourned the trial of former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisah Metuh, until Oct. 23 for continuation of trial.

The court adjourned the trial because the court is due to commence its annual vacation on July 10.

During the hearing, Mr Sam-Ben Nwosu, a defence witness, told the court that he was aware of the N400million payment made to Metuh by retired Col. Sambo Dasuki, a former National Security Adviser.

Nwosu said: “I know about the N400million payment because I remember that sometime in Oct. 2014, Metuh said that we were going to make a presentation to the then President, Goodluck Jonathan.

“The presentation was on issues bordering on perception of activities of the government,’’ he said.

Nwosu said he could not complete his testimony as the Judge, Justice Okon Abang, said that the court needed to adjourn to enable the court registrar sort out files for the next day’s proceedings.

Abang, therefore, adjourned continuation of trial until Oct. 23.

PoliticsINEC Commences Recall Process Of Sen. Dino Melaye by atorioke(op): 10:20pm On Jul 03, 2017
Chief Olowo, who led the constituents of Kogi West to INEC headquarters to submit the petition, accused Melaye of distancing himself from his constituents since he was elected to represent the district in 2015.

INEC, on August 19, would conduct verification of the signatures of the petitioners demanding the recall, submitted to the commission from all the polling units in the constituency, she explained.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the recall of Sen. Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West Senatorial District.

INEC released the timetable in a statement issued by the Secretary of the Commission, Mrs Augusta Ogakwu, on Monday in Abuja.

Ms Ogakwu, on July 10, said INEC would issue verification notice to be pasted at INEC Local Government Office in Lokoja and Melaye’s constituency.

According to her, the last day for submission of application by interested observers at INEC headquarters office is on July 30.

She disclosed that INEC has fixed Aug. 10 as the last day for submission of names of verification agents for the member to be recalled and the petitioners.

She also added that the commission would schedule stakeholders meeting for the recall to be held on Aug. 15 at INEC Lokoja office.

INEC, on August 19, would conduct verification of the signatures of the petitioners demanding the recall, submitted to the commission from all the polling units in the constituency, she explained.

On the same day, INEC would declare the outcome of the verification at its Local Government Office in Lokoja.

INEC would issue the timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of referendum subject to the outcome of the verification exercise, she explained.

Speaking with NAN shortly after submitting the petition on June 24, Chief Cornelius Olowo, said the move was based on the senator’s “abysmal performance’’.

Chief Olowo, who led the constituents of Kogi West to INEC headquarters to submit the petition, accused Melaye of distancing himself from his constituents since he was elected to represent the district in 2015.

He said that no fewer than 180,500 registered voters out of the 360,000 voters in the senatorial district endorsed Melaye’s recall.
