Politics / Parents Donate Their Daughters To Boko Haram For Suicide Bombing - Nigerian Army by atorioke(m): 11:27pm On Aug 05, 2017
The Nigerian Army has made a shock discovery about how Boko Haram has been getting the supply of female suicide bombers.

Army spokesman, Brigadier Gen. Sani Usman said the girls were donated by their parents, according to some of the would-be-bombers apprehended and who made revealing statements during interrogations.

“It was discovered that most of these hapless minors were “donated” to the terrorists sect by their heartless and misguided parents and guardians, as part of their contribution to the perpetuation of the Boko Haram terrorists’ dastardly acts against the Nigerian society and humanity”, Usman said.

“The acts of these parents and guardians are not only barbaric, but condemnable and unacceptable”, he added.

He appealed to religious, traditional and community leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians in the North-East, to dissuade their people from donating their daughters to Boko Haram for indoctrination and suicide bombing missions.

“Nigerians have a responsibility and obligation to collectively mould our children and wards and define a better future for them rather than condemning them to death by the criminal Boko Haram terrorists and their sympathizers through suicide bombings,” Usman said.

He urged the people to be more vigilant, security conscious and report any suspicious persons or those whose daughters or female wards are missing or have not been seen recently.

”You can report by calling 193 on any network.

“The public is also reminded that the Nigerian Army’s offer and reward of the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000.00) to anybody that provide information about suicide bombing, is still valid,” he added.

Sports / World's Fastest Man "Usain Bolt" Loses To American Justin Gatlin In 100m Final by atorioke(m): 10:46pm On Aug 05, 2017
It was not a last race that Jamaican Usain Bolt would have loved as he was beaten to the third position by hot rivals American Justin Gatlin and his compatriot Christian Coleman in London on Saturday night in the World Championship 100 metres final.

Gatlin who endured successive boos from the crowd both in his heat and semi final race, because of his past doping offences, finished ahead of Bolt and Coleman, in a surprising end to the major highlight of the night. He returned a time of 9.92 seconds.

Coleman, who had beaten Bolt in the semi-final race earlier in the day, re-enacted the feat, beating the Jamaican, who had dominated the race for nine years. He also returned a time of 9.94 ahead of Bolt’s 9.95 seconds.

Perhaps, both Coleman and Gatlin were making a fitting statement, that the Bolt era has ended.

Respect: Gatlin on his knees for Bolt

But Bolt has one more point to prove in the 4×100 metres relay on Saturday, before he goes into retirement.

Usain Bolt’s qualification for the 100 metres final was shaky.

To qualify, he was given a double scare by Coleman, who beat him in their semi, and the stadium scoreboard, which initially left him off the results.

The Jamaican, seeing his fourth gold in the event before retiring next week after the sprint relay, had a better start than in the heats but it was made to look awful by the explosion of Coleman.

The American, fastest man in the world this year with 9.92 seconds, poured on the pressure and crossed first in 9.97. Bolt had to work hard to close the gap.

He eased up only over the last few strides and though it was only a semi-final he will not be happy to have been beaten across the line in a 100m race for the first time in four years.

Bolt clocked 9.98 – the second-fastest time of the night – but initially Andrew Fisher of Bahrain was shown as second with Bolt not in the first six.

Crime / UK Extradites "Miraculous Pregnancies" Pastor For Child Trafficking (PHOTO) by atorioke(m): 8:21pm On Aug 05, 2017
The UK has extradited a self-styled Kenyan pastor, who claimed he created miraculous pregnancies, to Kenya to face child-trafficking charges.

Gilbert Deya’s extradition came after he failed in his decade-long legal battle to remain in the UK.

He denied charges of stealing five children between 1999 and 2004 when he appeared in court in Nairobi.

Concerns were first raised about the conduct of Mr Deya, who ran a church in London, in a BBC investigation in 2004.

Infertile or post-menopausal women who attended the Gilbert Deya Ministries church in Peckham, south-east London, were told they could have “miracle” babies.

But the babies were always “delivered” in backstreet clinics in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.

Mr Deya later moved to Scotland, and was arrested in Edinburgh in 2006 under an international arrest warrant issued by Kenya.

His Gilbert Deya Ministries is being investigated by the UK Charity Commission for alleged mismanagement.

“Our statutory inquiry into Gilbert Deya Ministries is ongoing. We are currently considering the implication of Gilbert Deya’s extradition on our investigation,” the commission said in a statement.

When the BBC asked Mr Deya during its 2014 investigation how he explained the births of children with DNA different to that of their alleged parents, the 65-year-old Mr Deya said: “The miracle babies which are happening in our ministry are beyond human imagination.

“It is not something I can say I can explain because they are of God and things of God cannot be explained by a human being.”

Kenya’s police spokesman Charles Owino told the BBC that Mr Deya had arrived in Nairobi aboard a Kenya Airways flight following his extradition.

Mr Deya had opposed his extradition, saying he feared being tortured and sentenced to death.

In 2007, his wife, Mary, was sentenced to two years in prison in Kenya after being convicted of stealing a baby.

In 2011, she was sentenced to three years in jail after being convicted of stealing another child.

Desperate women, some past the menopause and others who were infertile, were convinced that being prayed for by Mr Deya and travelling to Kenya would result in a child.

Once there, they were convinced by Mrs Deya and others that they were experiencing labour and taken to illegal clinics where they believed they had given birth.

But they were actually given babies which had been taken from local women.

Education / News Agency Of Nigeria Titles Video Of Woman Insulting Adeboye "Best Video" by atorioke(m): 7:55pm On Aug 05, 2017
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday posted the video of a woman who accused the General Overseer of Redeem Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, of collecting money from her sister.

The U.K based Nigerian lady said Adeboye and other men of God should stop collecting money from people in the name of God.

However, NAN while posting the video and story, titled it “Best Video: Woman tells Pastor Adeboye to return sister’s money.”

Looking at the heading, one wonders if the said journalist agrees with the woman on the allegation or disagrees with the act of collecting money from members by men of God or an atheist.

NAN being a National News Agency shouldn’t have titled the story “Best Video” since it is not expected to take side in their reports.

The immediate trigger for the unidentified woman’s anger was the financial problem being faced by her younger sister. She had helped the sister to start a business in Nigeria. And the sister, a member of the Redeemed Church of God had given all her profit to the church.

Thereafter, the sister asked the older sister to send another money.

The UK based Nigerian lady who remembered that her sister had given money to the church in the past asked the sister to seek the church’s help, afterall life is sometimes a quid-pro-quo.

When the church was not willing to help, she took her case to the social media, where the church has been under a lacerating scrutiny since 3 August when the video hit the waves.

This part, we will be looking at Lizards. Lizard species are many and so, we will not concentrating on a particular lizard specie but general facts on any of the species.

Here are the Amazi NV Facts about Lizards.

Out of 6,263 species of lizards in this world, only two are venomous. They are Gila Monster (Heloderma sucpetum) and the Mexican Beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum).

Some lizards species can weigh up to 166kg, and may live anywhere from one year to 30 years.

Komodo Dragon is the world largest lizard and can only be seen in Komodo Islands of Indonesia.

Lizards take their tongue out to smell by tasting the air around them.

Some species of lizard squirting blood from their eyes to protect themselves from the predators or when there is threat.

When there is no water, lizards save saves water and excreet only salts, and you can actually see a white residue on their body which is salt.

Lizards are born dumb and remain so till they die. They are referred to being dumb because they don’t have vocal cord to make any sound except the Gecko lizard.

Chameleons don’t change colour so ands to camouflage with the sorrounding nor do it to protect themselves. But they change colour according to their mood, temperature, health, communication and light.

Most species of lizard continue to grow teeth throughout their life, and if teeth are lost, they simply grow in replacements.

When lizards feel endangered or threatened, they can detach their tail as part of a ploy to escape. Their tail will grow back in time, but it will usually be thinner than the original.

Most lizards have legs, but some species do not! These are often confused with snakes. You can tell the difference between a snake and a legless lizard by looking at the head; if there are eyelids and external ears present, you are looking at a lizard and not a snake.

Lizards can be found on every single continent of the world, with the exception of Antarctica.

A proverb says a lizard bob to praise itself after falling from a long range. But it is not true. Lizard bob up and down to announce their dominance, challenge other lizards that get near and the other lizard will bob its head also. The Winner apparently the one that does the most head-bobs.

Why do lizards do Push-Ups?. They do it to get attention and it is done by male lizards.

Health / Baby Born "Pregnant" In India Shocks Health Expert (PHOTOS) by atorioke(m): 3:26pm On Aug 01, 2017
A baby in India was born “pregnant” with his half-formed twin in a rare case that has astonished the medical fraternity in the country.

Radiologist Bhavna Thorat said some mass with the presence of bones was discovered early July in the then foetus’ abdomen during a routine scan of the 19-year-old pregnant mother.

“In the post-natal scans, we spotted another half-formed baby with a brain, arm and legs in a foetal sac in the baby’s abdomen.

“The mother had conceived twins.

“But here a twin got enveloped in the body of another twin, leading to a condition of a host baby and its parasitic twin, who grew up to 13 weeks and then stopped.

“This was a rare case of foetus-in-foetus, a congenital anomaly in which a malformed and parasitic foetus grows inside the body of a baby,’’ Thorat added.

After his birth on July 20 at Bilal Hospital in Thane, near the western city of Mumbai, the baby underwent surgery recently to have the foetus removed.

Paediatric surgeons at a separate hospital operated on July 25 to remove the unborn twin, a male about 7 cm in length and weighing around 150 grammes.

“There were no complications. Both the mother and the baby boy are still admitted but are in good health,’’ gynaecologist Neena Nichlani told newsmen.

Nichlani and Thorat said only 100 such cases have been documented worldwide.

“A foetus-in-foetus is estimated to occur once in every 500,000 live births,’’ Thorat said.

Health / Breastfeeding A Child Doesn't Makes The Breast To Sag (fall) - Health Expert by atorioke(m): 1:22pm On Jul 30, 2017
Mrs Olubunmi Aiyedun , the President National Association of Nigeria Paediatric Nurses says exclusive breastfeeding does not flatten or make breast sag.

Aiyedun made this known when she featured at a forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

The paediatrician, who noted that a lot of women prefer not to feed their babies exclusively because they don’t want their breasts to sag or get flattened, described it as a myth.

According to Aiyedun, whether or not a woman exclusively breastfeed her child, the breast will still fall later in her life when it is time for the breast to rest.

She stressed the need for every nursing mother to exclusively breastfeed their children, noting that it helps to reduce the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Aiyedun advised nursing mothers to wear good bra when breasting in order to help package the breast to make it firm.

On breast milk, the paediatrician said that it contains mostly water, adding that there was no reason to give babies water in the first six months after birth.

“Exclusive breastfeeding is economical and is also ideal food for the baby as well as saves money for the family and the community.’’

Aiyedun also said that for exclusive breastfeeding to be effective and sustained there must be a good relationship with the gate keepers such as the head of communities, religious and traditional rulers among others.

This according to her is because such persons can influence women, especially nursing mothers positively or negatively.

She added that having a baby friendly environment for working class mothers was another measure in ensuring that exclusive breastfeeding would be sustained.

The health practitioner frowned at some cultural practices which entailed the mother giving new born water in the first six months from the stream or goddess and that it was a taboo for mothers to disobey such practices in some communities.

She also advised health workers to maintain the right attitude as well as good relationship with nursing and pregnant women in order to ensure that exclusive breastfeeding was sustained.

According to her, giving some kind of incentives, training and assistance from Community Support Group and involvement of husbands from the antenatal stage through delivery will also help in sustaining exclusive breastfeeding.

She, therefore, encouraged husbands to support their wives to practice exclusive breastfeeding.

Aiyedun also called on the media to help in creating awareness on the need for nursing mothers to feed their babies exclusively for six months.

The paediatrician commended international bodies such as “Save The Children’’, “World Health Organisation (WHO) as well as local Non- Governmental Organisations (NGOs) for their support in making sure that exclusive breastfeeding was sustained in the country.

Foreign Affairs / I Will Not Step Down Nor Die - 93-year-old Zimbabwean President, Mugabe Boast by atorioke(m): 6:33pm On Jul 29, 2017
President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe on Saturday said he was not stepping down nor die and that there was no one with his political stature who could immediately take over from him.

The 93-year-old leader has been in charge in the former British colony since independence in 1980.

His health is closely watched by Zimbabweans, who fear the country could face chaos if he dies without anointing a successor.

Mugabe told tens of thousands of supporters at a rally in the town of Chinhoyi, in his home province, that doctors were recently surprised by his “strong bone system.”

He has traveled to Singapore three times this year for what officials say is routine medical treatment.

“There is the issue that the president is going. I am not going,” Mugabe told supporters on the grounds of a local university, 100 km west of the capital Harare.

“The president is dying. I am not dying. I will have an ailment here and there but bodywise, all my internal organs … very firm, very strong,” Mugabe said as he leant on the lectern.

Mugabe had walked onto the stage slowly but without assistance.

The issue of who will succeed Mugabe has deeply divided the ruling party, with two factions supporting Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Mugabe’s wife Grace.

On Thursday, Grace challenged Mugabe to name his preferred successor, to end divisions over the future leadership of ZANU-PF.

She repeated the call on Saturday, adding that Mugabe would lead the process to choose his eventual successor.

Mugabe said although some party officials wanted to succeed him, he saw no one among his subordinates with his political clout to keep the party united and fend off a challenge from the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change.

“A new man will not have the same stature and the same acceptance as I have managed to secure for the party over the years,” said Mugabe.

Politics / Kogi Government Ready To Pay Salaries, Releases Over N2bn For Workers Salaries by atorioke(m): 1:42pm On Jul 29, 2017
Government has released N2 billion to the 21 local government councils in the state as their share of the N6.2 billion of the Paris Club refund the state received from the Federal Government.

A statement issued in Lokoja on Saturday by the Commissioner of Finance, Mr Idris Ashiru, said the government’s share of the refund was N4.02 billion.

He said that N1. 716 billion out of the government share had been released for the payment of May and June salaries of teaching and non-teaching staff in tertiary institutions.

Ashiru said that N1. 323 billion was expended on the payment of May and June pensions of retired workers.

The commissioner added that N987, 540, 000 was expended on the payment of May salary of workers in ministries, departments and agencies.

“In addition, the Ministry of Finance made additional fund of N3,219,145,997.12 available to the Accountant-General to clear arrears of May salary of civil servants.

He assured that workers who were indicted by the screening exercise and granted clemency by Gov. Yahaya Bello would be paid.

Ashiru said that staff of the judiciary, the Legislature and political office holders had since been paid their June salaries.

“It is important to note that Gov. Yahaya Bello directed that the state should use all the Paris Refund to clear outstanding salaries and pensions as against the undertaken with the Federal Government to use only 75 per cent of the refund,” the statement quoted Ashiru as saying.

Although, Africa’s richest man, Nigerian Aliko Dangote dropped to 105th on the 2017 Forbe’s real-time billionaires’ ranking, he maintains the lead in Africa, as the richest man.

Dangote, who was ranked 51st in 2016 with a net worth of $15.4 billion, currently has a net worth of $12.2 billion, africannews.com reports.

The businessman was ranked 37th richest man in the world in 2014 with a net worth of $25 billion.

The decline is attributed to the devaluation of Naira, the Nigerian currency.

There are 21 African billionaires living in Africa worth a combined $70 billion.

The next African on the is South African diamond magnate Nicky Oppenheimer who ranks 199th with $7 billion, followed by another South African, luxury goods tycoon Johann Rupert who ranks 237th with $6.1 billion.

Nigerian telecom tycoon Mike Adenuga ranked 250th with a net worth of $5.8 billion, followed by Egypt’s richest billionaire Nassef Sawiris ranked 269th and worth $5.6 billion.

Retail magnate South African Christoffel Wiese ranked 269th with a worth of $5.6 billion.

South Africa retains its dominance on the Africa list and is tied with Egypt for the largest number of individual billionaires.

Only two female billionaires in Africa made it on the list including daughter of Angola’s president Isabel dos Santos – who is Africa’s richest woman – and Nigeria’s Folorunsho Alakija, vice chair of Nigerian oil exploration company, Famfa Oil.

Tanzanian Mohammed Dewji is Africa’s youngest billionaire at age 41. He is CEO of conglomerate METL, which his father founded in the 1970s.

Onsi Sawiris of Egypt is the continent’s oldest billionaire at age 86 and the father of two other African billionaires — Nassef and Naguib Sawiris.

Thirteen out of Africa’s 21 billionaires have self-made fortunes, while the other eight inherited their fortunes.

They hail from 7 countries: South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco, Algeria, Angola, and Tanzania.

atorioke:
Jeff Bezos was the richest man in the world for a time on Wednesday, with a fortune of over $90 billion.

Forbes and Bloomberg, the Amazon CEO had a net worth of over $89 billion as of the close of markets Wednesday, while Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates had a net worth of just over $90 billion.

Though Bezos didn’t end the day as the richest man, he may likely take the crown from Gates in the coming days and weeks.

When he hits the mark, Bezos, who started selling books from his garage 22 years ago, becomes the first man to overtake Gates from his perch in seven years and is only the sixth man to hold the “richest person” title in the past 30 years, according to Forbes.

Bezos’ rise carries important symbolic weight — signaling Amazon’s unbridled power and value, presenting a new face of outsized wealth to the world and heralding a new kind of billionaire who is skeptical of philanthropy and has massive reach in culture, technology and media. Bezos will be a stark contrast to his fellow Seattle-area resident Gates, who has topped the list for much of the past quarter-century and devotes his time and money to philanthropy.

What’s most astounding about Bezos’ rise is his recent wealth surge. He has been a billionaire for nearly 20 years, first making the Forbes list in 1998 with a net worth of $1.6 billion after Amazon’s IPO. He chugged along for the following decade, reaching $4.4 billion in 2007, gradually rising to $18.4 billion by 2012, ranking him 26th on the list.

But over the past two years, as Amazon’s stock has soared, so has Bezos’ fortune. He owns 79.9 million shares, or just under 17 percent of the company. His net worth has grown by $70 billion over the past five years, surging by $45 billion in the last two years alone — possibly the largest wealth-creation surge in history.

One victim, who was robbed at her home in Owerri, last night, told journalists that the family was taken unawares when some criminals burgled into their home and swiftly directed them to submit large sums of money. When they could not produce the money, they were forced to disclose their pin numbers for transfer, using POS machine they came with.

Also, a man who wanted to buy a car in Owerri, was shot yesterday by suspected armed robbers in Owerri, after he had been trailed to the bank.

The matter is under investigation, according to police sources.

Crime / Re: Buratai And Other Army Chiefs Relocate To Maiduguri by atorioke(m): 1:36am On Jul 28, 2017
atorioke:
The nation’s military chiefs are to move back to the Maiduguri command centre to consolidate the gains against Boko Haram insurgency.

The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, made this known while answering questions from State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday.

He said the meeting was also attended by Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS); Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Vice Admiral Ekwe Ite-Ibas, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), and Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS).

According to the minister, the meeting agreed to get more surveillance devices, cameras and other vital security gadgets that will be able to see distant attackers coming to the position of the Nigerian troops.

“We just finished a meeting with the Acting President and the three Service Chiefs.

“We agreed that they should move back to the Command Centre again and see what are the things happening there.

“We have also agreed that we should get more surveillance devices, cameras that will be able to see distant attackers coming to the position of our troops.

“The period of the raining season is a difficult moment for us.

“We cannot dominate the environment like what we do during the dry season but effort is geared towards regaining back our areas,’’ he added.

Dan-Ali reassured that “all these ambushes that are happening regularly would be stopped.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that suspected members of the Boko Haram sect have intensified their deadly activities in Borno in recent times.

The suspected insurgents on Tuesday attacked a convoy of oil workers at a village along Gubio and Magumeri local government areas.

The attackers ambushed the oil workers, who were staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), travelling in a convoy of about 10 vehicles.

The oil workers were engaged in oil exploration in the Lake Chad Basin. They were rescued a day after but with the military losing nine men and a civilian.
