“Whenever I meet a Nigerian, I ask, What do you like the most about your country? There invariable reply from more than a thousand Nigerians is “I like the Nigerian people”. “Today, Nigeria is fortunate to have such leaders and citizens. Together they are dedicated to keeping Nigeria united and to ensuring every Nigerian is heard and taken into account and treated fairly,” he said. U.S. Ambassador Stuart Symington has called on all leaders and other stakeholders in Nigeria to preserve and maintain the nation’s unity and ensure peace. The ambassador said this while addressing guests at the 241st anniversary celebration of the independence of the U.S. on Thursday in Abuja. He said that Nigeria, like U.S, was blessed with visionary and dedicated leaders and it was capable of facing and overcoming its challenges. The envoy said that both the U. S. and Nigeria shared incredible diversity as nations. According to Symington, just like the U.S., Nigeria is a wonderfully diverse nation which differences and diversity are sources of strength and a reason for pride. “Whenever I meet a Nigerian, I ask, `What do you like the most about your country? There invariable reply from more than a thousand Nigerians is “I like the Nigerian people”. “I like our diversity, our resilience, our energy, our warmth, our spirit, our food…” He also cited some of the difficulties the U.S. had faced in order to preserve its union. He credited its success to the resilience of visionary leaders and citizens committed to ensuring justice for all. He believed that Nigeria was capable of achieving the same feat. “Today, Nigeria is fortunate to have such leaders and citizens. Together they are dedicated to keeping Nigeria united and to ensuring every Nigerian is heard and taken into account and treated fairly,” he said. The ambassador said that the anniversary was an opportunity to underscore how much Americans shared with Nigerians. “We share families, friends, interests, and principles. “All across this land, from Birnin Kebbi to Calabar, from Maiduguri to Badagry, Nigerians have welcomed me warmly and showed me the wonders of this country and its people. “In almost every place, I have also met Americans whose lives are dedicated to their work with and for Nigerians,” he said. Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama appreciated the U.S. support in Nigeria’s efforts to implement policies and programmes that could impact positively on the citizens. Onyeama was represented by Amb. Vivian Okeke, the Director, American and Caribbean Division in the ministry. He expressed confidence that the long existing relationship between Nigeria and U.S. would be sustained. The celebration was witnessed by current and former top government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business, political, and traditional leaders among others. The celebration featured entertainment by American singer, song-writer and State Department Arts Envoy Andy Allo. Implementation of UNESCO strategies, particularly commercialising research findings should occupy Nigeria educational institutions rather than constant hike in tuition fees payable by hapless students. The President said that Nigerian students did not deserve such harsh punishment as fee increase would further limit the capacity of students to dream of a better future. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said that it will resist every plans by some tertiary institutions to increase tuition fees. NANS President Mr. Chinonso Obasi, in a statement he issued on Wednesday in Abuja, said that NANS had received the report that no fewer than 38 tertiary institutions had concluded plans to increase tuition fees. Mr. Obasi said the Nigerian students had over the years been made to bear the brunt of administrative ineptitude of managers of tertiary institutions. He said: “In saner climes, education funding includes revenue from researches and consultative collaborations. “Implementation of UNESCO strategies, particularly commercialising research findings should occupy Nigeria educational institutions rather than constant hike in tuition fees payable by hapless students. “However NANS believes that the planned hike in tuition fees would be the last straw that would break the cycle of obnoxious levy on learning and pursuit of education.’’ The President said that Nigerian students did not deserve such harsh punishment as fee increase would further limit the capacity of students to dream of a better future. He said: “Consequently NANS wishes to serve notice to the authorities concerned that Nigerian students will never endure any increase in tuition at this time of the nation’s socio-economic challenges. “If administrators of Nigeria’s educational institutions have run out of ideas of funding and sustaining educational institutions in the country, they should feel free to liaise with students to explore new ways of funding the institutions. “While we express our readiness to dialogue with chief executives of tertiary institutions, NANS wishes to reiterate the fact that Nigerian students have been patient with the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. “The President Buhari administration should recognise that this is time to reward the understanding and cooperation of Nigerian students with education subsidy, proper funding of education and adequate welfare initiatives for students,’’ he said. [quote author=atorioke post=57954467]In the new suit, Evans is claiming N300 million as general and exemplary damages for his alleged illegal detention and unconstitutional media trial by the Police. Suspected kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly called Evans, has again filed a new suit on Thursday, dragging the Inspector General of Police, and three others before a Federal High Court in Lagos over his alleged illegal detention. Other respondents in the suit are the Nigeria Police Force, the Commissioner of Police Lagos State and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command. Evans earlier filed an ex parte application with reference number FHC/L/CS/1012/2017 on June 28, before the same court, seeking an order directing the respondents to charge him to court. However, in his new suit also marked FHC/L/CS/1012/ 2017 and with the same persons as respondents, Evans who is the applicant is seeking a declaration that his continued detention since June 10 without arraignment, breaches his fundamental rights as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution. The suspect is also seeking an order by the court, compelling the respondents to jointly and severally, pay him the sum of N300 million as exemplary damages for his illegal detention and alleged harm caused by his alleged media trial. The court has not fixed a date for hearing of the the suit by the suspect, who is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the respondents from further arresting, detaining, harassing, investigating or inviting him in relation to the facts of his case. The suit marked, FHC/L/CS/1012/2017, Evans is contending that his continued detention by the respondents since June 10, without a charge, or release on bail is an infringement on his fundamental rights. Suspected billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike popularly called Evans, has taken the Inspector General of Police, and three others before a Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged illegal detention. Other respondents are the Nigeria Police Force, Commissioner of Police Lagos State, and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command. The fundamental rights suit filed by Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, a lawyer to the suspected kidnapper, is seeking a court’s order directing the respondents to immediately charge him to court if there is any case against him. The suit is alternatively seeking an order, compelling the respondents to immediately release him unconditionally in the absence of any offence warranting a charge. The suit marked, FHC/L/CS/1012/2017, Evans is contending that his continued detention by the respondents since June 10, without a charge, or release on bail is an infringement on his fundamental rights. He argued that the respondents ought to have charged him to court in accordance with the provisions of Sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution. It was further argued that the alleged offence committed by the Evans are correspondingly intertwined with the constitutional safeguards as provided under Sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution. In a 27-paragraph affidavit in support of the motion deposed to by Evan’s father, Stephen Onwuamadike, it was averred that the applicant has been subjected to media trial without any court order by the respondents. The new suit has not been assigned to any judge and no date has been fixed for the hearing. Lalasticlala http://www.eyereport.com.ng/evans-sues-nigerian-police-for-illegal-detention/

Source: http://www.eyereport.com.ng/wyclef-jean-titles-new-song-fela-kuti/ “So for me, the same way kids can have songs called “Wyclef Jean” who are influenced by me, I want kids to know who Fela is and what he means.” The multiple award winning Haitian-American singer Wyclef Jean have disclosed in a recent interview that the title of one of the songs in his forth coming album [Carnival III: The Fall and Rise of a Refugee] will be “Fela Kuti”. The ace musician is clearly taking inspiration and paying tribute to the legendary Fela Kuti, who pioneered Afro beat music and much like the Reggae legend Bob Marley spoke out against oppression and social injustice of his people through his many hits that remain ever green in Africa and the rest of the world. Mr. Jean dsiclosed that the reason why he named his song after the music legend was to make young people know the legendury founder of Afrobeat. Wyclef Jean speaking to XXL said: “I decided to name it Fela Kuti because for me, I feel like we be thinking of [Bob] Marley, we give a lot of people from our past props, so when the kids hear Fela Kuti, I really want them to Google it. “Fela Kuti studied jazz in England. Wyclef studied jazz at Vailsburg High School. Fela Kuti then went back to his country and tried to help his country by running for president. Wyclef, you know, did the same thing. “Then, Fela, through all his obstacles and all that, his music is what pillared him right back to the top. He understood the strongest way to help politically was to make sure the music was bangin. “So for me, the same way kids can have songs called “Wyclef Jean” who are influenced by me, I want kids to know who Fela is and what he means."

As a way to celebrate the golden anniversary, the ATM was transformed into gold and Barclays also added a commemorative plaque and placed a red carpet in front for its users. Scottish inventor Shepherd-Baron created the original ATM and was commissioned by Barclays to create six cash dispensers, the first of which was installed at Enfield. However, the first person to withdraw from the ATM was English actor Reg Varney, who starred in the British TV comedy show “On The Buses.” Despite the fact that there are new technology such as online and mobile banking competiting with the ATM, the ATM remains popular 50 years on. Currently, there are three million cash machines across the globe and the U.K. alone dispensed 175 billion pounds in 2016 from 70,000 cash machines Mynd44 http://www.eyereport.com.ng/worlds-first-atm-clocks-50-years-photo-story/

“What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules,” declared Margrethe Vestager, the European Union’s Competition Commissioner. Google said it may appeal Popular search engine Google has been fined the sum of 2.42bn euros ($2.7bn) by the European Commission after it ruled the company had abused its power by promoting its own shopping comparison service at the top of search results. The total amount is the regulator’s largest penalty against a company accused of distorting the market. The commision also noted that if google don’t change the way it operates the Shopping service within the period of three-month, it would be ordered to make payments of 5% of its parent company Alphabet’s average daily worldwide earnings. Margrethe Vestager, the European Union’s Competition Commissioner. This is based on the company’s most recent financial report, that amounts to about $14m a day. The commission said it was leaving it to Google to determine what alterations should be made to its Shopping service rather than specifying a remedy. The European Union’s Competition Commissioner explained that the anti-competitive practices which has denied other firms to compete on their merits and to innovate is illegal under the EU antitrust rules. “What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules,” declared Margrethe Vestager, the European Union’s Competition Commissioner. “It has denied other companies the chance to compete on their merits and to innovate, and most importantly it has denied European consumers the benefits of competition, genuine choice and innovation.” The Commissioner added that the decision could now set a precedent that determines how she handles related complaints about the prominence Google gives to its own maps, flight price results and local business listings within its search tools. Reacting to the ruling, Google spokesman said “When you shop online, you want to find the products you’re looking for quickly and easily. “And advertisers want to promote those same products. That’s why Google shows shopping ads, connecting our users with thousands of advertisers, large and small, in ways that are useful for both. “We respectfully disagree with the conclusions announced today. We will review the Commission’s decision in detail as we consider an appeal, and we look forward to continuing to make our case.” Mynd44 Lalasticlala http://www.eyereport.com.ng/google-fined-e2-42bn-2-7bn-by-eu/

http://www.eyereport.com.ng/gay-marriage-cake-controversy-in-supreme-court/ The baker refused to bake a cake for same sex-marriage (gay marriage) because he honours God through the art of decorating cakes. The couple, Craig and Mullins, claimed they were discriminated against by the baker for his refusal to make a cake for them in 2012. The U.S. Supreme Court has vowed to hear the appeal filed by a Colorado baker who refused to bake cake for same-sex marriage. The court will decide if the baker, Mr. Jack Phillips, who objected to same-sex marriage based on his religious beliefs, could refuse to bake a cake for Charlie Craig and David Mullins’ same-sex marriage. Mr. Phillips filed the appeal when the Colorado Court of Appeals ruled in August 2015 that he was required to bake a wedding cake for the gay couple under Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act He said the Colorado Court of Appeals ruling violated his constitutional rights to freedom of speech and freedom of religion. He refused to bake a cake for same sex-marriage (gay marriage) because he honours God through the art of decorating cakes. “I feel that the Bible is clear — what God defines marriage as,” Phillips said in 2015. “For me to violate that would be for me to rebel against God, to take what he’s designed and say it doesn’t matter.” The couple, Craig and Mullins, claimed they were discriminated against by the baker for his refusal to make a cake for them in 2012. However, despite the ruling of the Colorado Court of Appeals, Phillips refused to bake the cake for the couple. “They said you have to create cakes for same-sex couples, so he removed himself from the market. He chose to stop making wedding cakes,” said Jeremy Todesco, a lawyer for the Alliance Defending Freedom, who appealed for Phillips on his behalf. Mynd44

The suspect also threatened to make a public confession if the police do not arrest those he mentioned as being his partners. “It is true. A former minister of FCT, Olajumoke Akinjide, and Olanrewaju Otiti has been remanded in EFCC custody by Justice Joyce Abdulmaleek of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, on Thursday over alleged N650 million fraud. Sen. Ayoade Adeseun, as well as Akinjide and Otiti, alongside former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke were arraigned on a 12-count amended charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful conversion and stealing of N650 million in the build up to the 2015 general elections. At the hearing, the prosecution counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, informed the court that the commission had amended the charge against the accused persons and prayed that the amended charge be read. However, Mr Bolaji Ayorinde, Mr Michael Lana and Mr Adeniyi Isola, all defence counsel, argued that no charge had ever been read to their clients before, and so there was therefore no cause for any amendment. The defence counsel further submitted that it was an irregularity on the part of the prosecution to be amending non existing charges. But the judge overruled them and directed that the charge sheet be read to them. However, The two accused persons present in court—Akinjide and Otiti– pleaded not guilty to the 12- count charge. The two defence counsel, Ayorinde and Lana walked out of the court after they said they were withdrawing further appearance in the case, claiming the court had not been fair to their clients. Akinjide, however, had begun moves to explore plea bargain arrangement with EFCC and Oyedepo confirmed the move during the court’s proceeding saying that the process was still ongoing. The Nigerian Government has taken a new dimension as the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, disclosed that the country will export 72 tonnes of yam to Europe and the United States of America (USA) on June 29. The Minister made this known in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Olukayode Oyeleye, in Abuja on Thursday. However, Mr. Oyeleye said Ogbeh disclosed this at a meeting with some members of the Committee on Nigeria Yam Export Programme, and also adding that the flag off of the yam export would be done at Apapa Port. The minister said the yam would be exported in three containers at 24 tonnes each, one will be exported to the U.K. while the other two will be exported to the United States. Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh Ogbeh said: “To make yam competitive, we will work on the packages and the right types of trucks to be used for transportation of the produce. The Minister also noted that Agriculture can create more employment than oil and gas and for that reason the country need to move from oil and gas to agriculture. “Oil and gas cannot employ millions of people just like agriculture so, we must work hard to move from oil to earning foreign exchange from agriculture,’’ he said. Also confirming the statement of the minister as regard the export of yam to the two world powerful countries, Prof. Simon Irtwange, the Chairman of the committee set up in February, said they were working with the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) to commence the process of the export. The committee is made up of representatives from the Nigerian Customs Service, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), and many more. ……by Strive Masiyiwa TITLE: 4 Tips on How to Deliver a Pitch Investors Simply Can’t Turn Down (Part Two) Know your product, your customers and your investor! When investors listen to a “pitch,” establishing whether or not someone has a good business idea is the easy part. Most investors walk away because they’re not convinced they can trust you with their money. It’s really that simple. If I don’t tell you this, I will have done you a disservice. It’s nothing to be angry or bitter about. This post must be read with the other two posts I’ve done on this subject. If you haven’t yet done so, I suggest you click here and read them carefully. For those of you who missed part two, here’s a summary of Neil Patel’s first four pitching “tips” Take only ten minutes. Turn your pitch into a story. Be laser-focused. Explain EXACTLY what your product or service is. And in this part, we shall continie with Neil’s article and it will run from tip 5 through 8. 5. Explain EXACTLY what is unique about your product or service. If you are not producing or providing anything different from the run-of-the-mill widget, don’t even go to the meeting. Go back to your drawing board, and design something better. 6. Explain EXACTLY who your target audience is. Use demographic and psychographic features to pinpoint your customers. Show investors a picture of a customer along with relevant data points. 7. Explain EXACTLY how you intend to acquire these customers. Business success comes down to marketing. If you have a marketing idea, method, technique or process, this is your chance to showcase it. Contrary to pithy maxims, great products don’t sell themselves. You sell the product. To be persuaded, investors have to see an airtight strategy for getting the product to market. Most VCs are well aware of the advantages of digital marketing and won’t take a second glance at a product that isn’t backed by a tactical plan for online marketing. 8. Explain your revenue model. Investors invest because they want to make a return on that investment. An investor will care about your pitch if you can answer this question: ‘How will my company make you rich?’ The answer, in investor-speak, is your revenue model. Specifically identify which type of revenue model you are embracing, and how you intend to apply it. By now you know that one of my favorite TV shows of all time is Shark Tank. I hope Neil’s excellent tips one through 8 are preparing YOU to “swim with the sharks”! Last week, I drew your attention over and over again to the need for you to understand investors. When you do your pitch, you must remember: # Investors are not donors. # Investors are not tourists. # Investors are not philanthropists or charities. # Investors have options. If you have the opportunity to pitch to an investor, consider it a privilege rather than an entitlement: # A good investor will never put money into a venture run by someone who comes across as arrogant, cocky or argumentative. # A good investor will never put money behind someone who is dishonest, corrupt, or a thief. If you have a tendency for dishonesty or misuse of other people’s money, a good investor will find out before they give you a cent! # A good investor will not put money behind someone who is careless or disorganized. # A good investor will not invest in someone who is highly emotional. Being passionate is one thing, but being emotional is not acceptable! # A good investor will not invest in someone who is political. You should understand the politics of your country from an economic perspective, but not come across as an active participant in politics. Being a good investor is very hard! Your job is to show them that you can be trusted with someone else’s money. Nigerians all over the world, has raised over $15,000 for the family of Sergeant Chukwudi Iboko, the policeman that was killed during a robbery in a branch of Zenith Bank in Imo State. The late sergeant Chukwudi, died on February 23, 2017 in a gun battle with some robbers who invaded a Zenith Bank branch on Wetheral Road, Owerri. The feat of the fundraising for the Ibokos was achieved within 24 hours of the campaign that was started by PUNCH Newspapers and other social activists led by Kayode Ogundamisi. As of 11:08pm on Monday, $16,476 had been raised on a fundraising platform, GoFundMe, by 390 people. The late father of eight children, in a video clip released in June, could be seen engaging a four-man robbery gang in a gun battle, during which he killed one of the robbers and was shot by one of the armed robbers . He later died a day after the incident. The late policeman’s wife Rose, in an interview, said one of their eight children Chukwuebuka, died from shock on the day of the father’s burial, and that Zenith Bank only paid for his burial, adding that the police authorities abandoned her and her surviving children. Punch Readers had challenged PUNCH Newspapers to create a platform to raise funds for the deceased’s family, with many Nigerians pledging to support the cause and PUNCH created a GoFundMe account with a target of $15,000. In less than 24 hours, the target was exceeded: The highest donation was $1,000 and the least was $5. “You won’t know (what) this feels until it happens to someone that you know,” said Elochukwu Obimdike, who gave $5. Tope Fasua, who gave $120, asked that part of the funds should be used to support the other policemen involved in the tragedy. He wrote: “Please, let us use this money for the other affected policemen and to put Zenith Bank and Nigerian Police under pressure. Thanks The PUNCH for this initiative. You clocked the amount in one day, plus extra.” During the donation campaign, some Nigerians requested that a bank account should be opened in the name of the family for naira donation. “Please, can PUNCH provide a bank account to pay the fund? My payment is not going through on the platform. Thank you,” @tipsy8701 tweeted. Fredrick Obinna-Raymond Chukwuemeka, requested the opening of a bank account in a Nigerian Bank. “Please, is there any Nigerian bank account (in which) one can make his own donation?” After request by readers for a Nigerian Bank account, PUNCH Newspapers has decided to open a Nigerian bank account for the purpose of raising funds in naira for the family. The PUNCH and its partners would soon announce three non-governmental organisations that would manage the funds raised for the family to ensure accountability. However, the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) has threatened to sue the Nigeria Police Force and the management of Zenith Bank PLC for abandoning the victim’s family. The Roman Catholic Church in Rome, saddened by the events at the Diocese of Ahiara in Imo State, Pope Francis, has directed the tribal masterminds to pledge allegiance to the Vatican or be fired. He made this known to a private audience with the delegation of the Diocese of Ahiara, over the ‘painful situation’ in the diocese since 2012, when Bishop Ebere Peter Okpaleke was appointed by Pope Benedict. The members of the delegation were accompanied by His Eminence Cardinal J. O. Onaiyekan, Archbishop of Abuja and Apostolic Administrator of Ahiara, His Excellency A. J. Obinna. Others are Metropolitan Archbishop of Owerri, I. A. Kaigama, Archbishop of Jos and President of the Episcopal Conference of Nigeria, His Excellency P. E. Okpaleke, Bishop of Ahiara. Reverend Fathers C. O. Ebii, J. N. Uwalaka and U. I. Olekamma, Sister B. O. Ezeyi and S.A.R.P Iwu, Traditional Head, on behalf of the religious and lay faithful. The Pope said: “Therefore, I ask that every priest or ecclesiastic incardinated in the Diocese of Ahiara, whether he resides there or works elsewhere, even abroad, write a letter addressed to me in which he asks for forgiveness; all must write individually and personally. “Whoever does not do this will be ipso facto suspended a divinis and will lose his current office. “We all must share this common sorrow. “I feel great sorrow for those priests who are being manipulated even from abroad and from outside the Diocese. “I think that, in this case, we are not dealing with tribalism, but with an attempted taking of the vineyard of the Lord.’’ The Pope went further to note that he do not want to surprise the Diocese but to make indications to be communicated to all. He added: “However, I decided not to suppress the Diocese. Instead, I wish to give some indications that are to be communicated to all: first of all it must be said that the Pope is deeply saddened. “This seems very hard, but why must the Pope do this? Because the people of God are scandalized. “Jesus reminds us that whoever causes scandal must suffer the consequences. Maybe someone has been manipulated without having full awareness of the wound inflicted upon the ecclesial communion. “To you brothers and sisters, I would like to express my sincere thanks for your presence; and also to Cardinal Onaiyekan for his patience and to Bishop Okpaleke, whose patience and humility I admire.’’ However, the meeting ended with a prayer to Mary and the Pope’s blessing. “I cordially greet the Delegation and thank you for coming from Nigeria in a spirit of pilgrimage. “For me, this meeting is a consolation because I am deeply saddened by the events of the Church in Ahiara. “In fact, the Church (and excuse the wording) is like a widow for having prevented the Bishop from coming to the Diocese. Many times I have thought about the parable of the murderous tenants, of which the Gospel speaks (cf. Mt 21:33-44), that want to grasp the inheritance. “In this current situation the Diocese of Ahiara is without the bridegroom, has lost her fertility and cannot bear fruit. Whoever was opposed to Bishop Okpaleke taking possession of the Diocese wants to destroy the Church. “This is forbidden; perhaps he does not realise it, but the Church is suffering as well as the People of God within her. “The Pope cannot be indifferent. I know very well the events that have been dragging on for years and I am thankful for the attitude of great patience of the Bishop, indeed the holy patience demonstrated by him.’’ lalasticlala mynd44 http://www.eyereport.com.ng/pope-angered-by-ahiara-diocese-crisis-gives-directives/#sthash.ZP7zKcFZ.dpuf |
