chris81964: I normally do an engine flush on any car that I purchase. This gives me a baseline. You might need to change your oil more frequently. I use Shell Rotella T6. It has more detergents in it. It should help with your sludge issues too. Bolt is a more punishing duty cycle than your privately driven car. true... because the more hot and cool cycle the oil goes through also adds to the possible formation of sludge. |

sooperrescue: The oil were way above what was recommended for Toyota. I remember that I told them that Toyota never recommended extended performance Mobil 1 but they were swayed away by the guys. So the reason was that the owners were using the wrong oil and it caused sludge I'm sorry but this doesn't add up to me. If the oils exceeded what was recommended by Toyota as you mentioned, then it is only expected that the oil should perform better. considering the fact the oils have good detergent and additives to prevent the formation of sludge due to oxidation. Also consider the fact that the oil change interval was religiously kept at 5,000 miles. My thought. |

Itsrm: I've had direct experiences with two different vehicles I imported myself using the same 1ZZ-FE. Vehicle engine came in clean as a whistle. Mobil 1 Oil was bought from two of nairalands biggest importers, the oil was religiously changed every 5k miles but to my greatest surprise, both vehicles developed sludge after a while.
I have to also add that both vehicles were used on bolt. I don't know if that was a factor. Thermostat was intact and there was no abuse. Hmmmm this is very interesting. So wait... Engines came in looking clean no issues. But gets to Nigeria being used for e-hailing and boom the engine don crase again. Shey na out weather ni abi wetin dey occur gan gan? because I want to believe the oils used were imported Mobil 1 and they should have been good quality oils. Would he interesting if we're able to narrow down the specific cause of this sludge build up. |

chris81964: Yesterday, I drove to Epe from Oshodi. I went via Lagos Ibadan expressway. The Pajero prior to being owned by me averages 500 km per month. The last 2 years as per the owner was spent on the island. I have put over 500 km in the short time I owned it. The ride is smooth. Would get to 100 without an effort. Refused to go past 120. Lots of noise but no progress. Ride on the Sagamu Benin portion of the road was good. The new Epe road was smooth as butter. The AC on these cars are good. I did not overheat. I set it to 25 and left it. Tomorrow I will replace the torn boot, get new spark plugs and replace trans fluid. Nice ride so far. The vehicle has présence. Black with tinted windows. The police officer that stopped me at a check point only said. Good morning sir. The last time I was driven there they asked for money. The best stealth vehicle to own. Low cost of entry but a lot of bang for your buck. Pictures are of my trip to Paradise and the torn boot that will be replaced. Next time I will take fishing gear with me. Thanks for these man.. I love reading these... Abeg carry us along during your repairs ooo |

Piyke: Still watching much content on sludge removal lol. Seems diesel works. I agree that that 1ZZ-FE engine seems more prone to sludge. A friend of mine who has always maintained a rigorous service schedule with 5w-30 is also facing sludge on his 2002 Camry. Generally, I've seen more sludge on Toyota than Honda cars. Totally agree. do let me know what solutions you come across. also i believe whatever option you decide to pick, it depends solely on the amount/extent of sludge build up. |

Piyke: Dealing with sludge in a 1ZZ-FE engine presently. Done first flush, but some sludge still remaining. Planning a more aggressive flush. I used liqui moly engine flush initially however I didn't follow up with a 2nd drain and fill. I may use diesel as part of the 2nd attempt. Still researching and planning! haha... Does the diesel trick work? used it once on my former Nissan Altima... wasn't sure if it worked tho. Also I still wonder why the 1ZZ and ZR engines are notorious for building up sludge so much. Seen so much of it, it feels crazy. I personally believe there is only how far this sludge removers can work. e get the kind sludge wey dem no fit comot. those ones that are thick like icing... |

foonshur: Thanks for the reply. Went on many car forums online, and it seems it a very common problem with the 2007-2009 Toyota Camry ABS module (not the whole pump). Symptoms is exactly how I described it; no/or intermittent tachometer, no speedometer, no temp gauge, no AC. Now the problem is fixing the module(as it is fixable). How much do you rekon a used one will be(make I no near new one yet)?? Thanks for your time once again. Oh alright that's a good one. You're one step closer to the solution. I am not sure about "fixing" the faulty module. Na to replace sure pass. Also when replacing since it is a common problem Toyota might have released a TSB giving information on the part number of the updated pump. Kindly ensure you get an updated one. Finally at the moment I don't know how much a replacement pump will cost. |

foonshur: Hello bro, pls I need your advice on something. I have a Toyota Camry 2007. My abs and brake light suddenly came on and my temperature guage, tachometer, speedometer and some other things too don't work. My ac too isn't working. I have tried scanning the abs module for fault codes but it's not even communicating with the scanner. Do I have to change the entire abs system. When you tried to turn the ignition off and on, was there any difference? When did the lights come on? While you ere driving or when parked? While scanning what other modules apart from the ABS can you communicate with? Now, if the ABS was down, you should have your temperature gauge and tachometer working because those ones get their signals from the engine control unit. But in this case it seems like everything shut down. So I highly doubt the ABS being the problem here. Check your fuses and relays first. |

susanc: Good evening sir. They just discovered this evening that the chain rail damper, according to dem is bad. The adjuster mouth is always sliding off the damper because the plastic fence like stuff on the damper, that is meant to hold the adjuster mouth hostage is broken. I hope this solves the issue. Will check dem tomorrow hopefully it should. i just hope they dont keep making you spend money sha without fixing the problem |

susanc: Good morning sir, the timing has been set twice and it has jumped. They first changed the timing chain adjuster, it jumped timing. The guy had to loosen the side of the engine. To look at it. After everything he said it was ok. After driving it, it has jumped timing. It was scanned and has the previous P0016 And a new code P0011 camshaft position timing over advanced or system performance bank 1 Has he considered changing the timing chain? There is definitely something causing the chain to jump constantly. Until that is resolved, that code will keep coming back and you will experience low engine performance. |
Car Talk › Re: REMOTE FAULT ASSESSMENT AND DIAGNOSIS GUIDE By AutoMoTech by AutoMoTech(op): 9:25pm On Dec 13, 2022 |
susanc: I am in portharcourt. The car jumped timing very well. And the timing chain is very loose on the cam shaft. The mechanic says there is an adjuster that makes the timing chain firm, that it is spoilt. So hopefully tomoro when he is done, car should be fine OK THAT'S GOOD. BUT HOW ABOUT THE MAF FAULTS? THE TIMING RESET WILL SURELY HELP IMPROVE ENGINE PERFORMANCE HOWEVER THE MAF CODES WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE A VERY HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION. KINDLY CONSIDER FIXING IT. IF NOT NOW LATER. BEST REGARDS |
