The Congolese medical authorities said on Saturday that they had received the first shipment of a new Ebola vaccine as the central African country battles its second deadliest outbreak of the virus this decade . The health ministry for the eastern province of North Kivu said that a preliminary batch of 11 ,000 doses of the new Ad26 -ZEBOV-GP vaccine manufactured by Johnson & Johnson had arrived on Friday . In all , a shipment of a total 50 ,000 doses is being sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo to help fight an outbreak that has killed more than 2 ,100 people since August 2018. Until now , the only vaccine against the disease was one manufactured by US firm ,Merck Sharpe and Dohme . The DRC ’ s deadliest Ebola outbreak since the WestAfrica pandemic in 2014 -2016 has affected the provinces of North Kivu , South Kivu and Ituri and left 2 ,183 people dead, according to the latest official figures . Since the start of the vaccination campaign on August 8 , 2018 , a total 245 ,999 people have been vaccinated . Ebola fighters have been hindered by chronic insecurity in the affected provinces of eastern DRC , but much of the controversy surrounding the response has centred on the use of vaccines. The World Health Organization had been pushing Kinshasa for months to approve the use of the J& J vaccine — an experimental product – to protect those living outside of direct transmission zones . The J&J vaccine had been rejected by DRC ’ s former health minister Oly Ilunga , who cited the risks of introducing a new product in communities where mistrust of Ebola responders is already high . But Ilunga ’ s resignation in July appeared to have paved the way for the second vaccine . Jean -Jacques Muyembe , the new head of the anti-Ebola campaign , said Friday the J&J vaccine would be used from mid -November with the operation being launched simultaneously in DR Congo and Rwanda . https://punchng.com/first-shipment-of-new-ebola-vaccine-arrives-in-dr-congo/

The Nigeria Customs Service has announced the seizure of 34 containers of rice smuggled through the Tin Can Island port in Lagos . The Comptroller General of Customs , Hameed Ali (retd) , disclosed this in Lagos on Tuesday . He said one of the rice containers was concealed by its importers as spare parts . He said , in addition to the 34 containers of rice , the service intercepted 11 containers of unregistered pharmaceutical products, two containers of used tyres , one container of used clothing and four containers of refined vegetable oil in retail packs, bringing the total to 52 containers of seized contraband . Ali put the duty paid value of the seized goods at N 2 .7 bn. He attributed the seizure to the recent closure of the land borders, which he said had prompted importers of banned items to route them through the seaports . He said, “ Specifically , we are aware that the partial closure of the land borders has resulted in the diversion of some cargoes back to our seaports . “ While we welcome this development, which no doubt will boost revenue , improve our trade facts and figures and sustain our diversification efforts, we have also recorded a number of seizures of unwholesome products , which otherwise would have been smuggled through the borders. “ Realising that there may be possible backlash to the closure of the land borders, I directed all seaports and airports to beef up surveillance and intercept any illicit and prohibited consignments for which attempts for their smuggling may be made through these entry points. “ This decision was made considering that those consignments may have been paid for and the importers will devise entry means to ensure they are delivered to their warehouses in Nigeria . ” Ali , who disclosed that the smuggled rice originated from Thailand added that some had expired . https://punchng.com/customs-intercept-34-containers-of-rice-at-port/

A Nigerian firm , Buserve Limited , has announced plans to introduce hydrogen -powered generators into the country to enable businesses to reduce their electricity costs. The Chief Executive Officer , Buserve Limited, Mr Laitan Aderinto, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Lagos , said the technology was being deployed in Europe . He said, “ We are partnering with a German company. We are starting with the bigger generators with capacity of 500KVA and above. Our plan is to ensure that factories are back to normal ; the price of diesel is killing them. “ If the government is ready , we are ready to work with them. For instance, there a independent power plants in Lagos that are being powered by gas . We can have IPPs powered by water instead of having to look for gas before you can power your generators.” He explained that water -to -hydrogen gas mass production technology represented a major scientific breakthrough of the utmost importance . According to him , the patented technology is based on an advanced proprietary scientific process , which includes the invention of using thermoplasma to convert water into hydrogen gas in high volume for power generation and at much lower cost than any other hydrogen production technology . Aderinto said, “ Furthermore, since H 2 production is done in real time according to actual power production requirements, there is no requirement for hydrogen storage, which is one of the greatest challenges in using hydrogen gas as a renewable fuel source, not to mention avoiding a storage model is also much safer. “ On average , with this technology, power is generated at about 10 per cent of the cost of diesel and very importantly , no fossil fuel component is required to mix with the H 2 when using this technology . He added , “ Water is the input and less than 10 per cent of the gross energy production is required to power the equipment . For each litre of water fed into the retrofit system, the net output exceeds 1m 3 of H 2 gas . “ This is a no -pollution technology designed to shift existing and future industrial power production away from fossil fuels and , therefore, reduce the world’ s harmful emissions. Currently , approximately 25 per cent of the world ’s harmful emissions is caused by industrial power production .” Copyright PUNCH. |
The Oyo State House of Assembly on Thursday passed the anti-open grazing bill. The passage of the bill came 24 hours after Fulani herdsmen from various parts of the state resolved to use a legal option to stop the Oyo State Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Bill 2019 . According to the lawmakers ,the bill when it becomes law, will foster peace and promote agricultural business in the state . The House noted that the bill was also to end loss of lives and constant clashes between herders and farmers. The Speaker of the House , Adebo Ogundoyin , appealed to residents of the state to ignore falsehoods and misconceptions about the bill. “ We assured the people that all suggestions and memoranda of understanding submitted by various groups, agencies and representatives of different communities and tribes on the bill was looked into before it was passed,” the speaker said. He maintained that the Assembly through the bill was only seeking a legal framework to address open rearing and grazing, as well as encourage and protect the economic activities of others who were into agricultural-related ventures . https://punchng.com/oyo-assembly-passes-anti-open-grazing-bill/

The Oyo State Government says its decision to revoke the 26 ,000 hectares of forest reserve land allocated by the immediate past administration was in the interest of the state . Briefing newsmen on Tuesday over the revocation, Mr. Kehinde Ayoola , the state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources , said the allocation was illegal and not for agricultural purpose as claimed by the past administration . According to Ayoola , the administration of ex -Governor Abiola Ajimobi “ illegally allocated ” 6,000 and another 20 ,000 hectares to individuals at Gambari in Oluyole Local Government Area and Opara in Oke Ogun area of the state . “ Their claim was that the allocations were for agricultural purposes , but you cannot see any farming or other agricultural activities going on in any of the areas now .“ It is very unfortunate that the administration that was supposed to preserve forests in the state to fight global warming was depleting them. “ It is ungodly for anybody to do anything that would reduce the size of our forests or to take such for themselves . “ The present government will do everything to secure and protect its forest reserves and also take steps to expand its forest resources , ” the commissioner said. How many Muslims and Christians know these facts? THE BIBLE IN ARABIC, . . IS THE CONTENT DIFFERENT? There are more Christians in Palestine than Israel. Their vernacular is Arabic. There are more Israelis who are Muslims than those who are Christians. And they also study in Arabic inside Israel. The population of Palestine is 12 million. 7 percent [approximately 840,000 of them] are Christians. In contrast, Israel population is 8.5million. Only 2 percent of Israelis, [approximately 171,000] are Christians while 17.5 percent of Israelis, [approximately 1.5m], are Muslims. Now let me further break it down. Most of the 840,000 Palestinian Christians speak Arabic as their vernacular. Most don't speak or understand English. Their Holy Bible is written in Arabic language. In the Arabic Bible, God is called Allah. That is how God is called in Arabic language. Same way the Yoruba Bible calls God "Oloun." If they want to say "God is great", they also say "Allah Akbar." If they want to say "Glory to God" they say "Alhamdulilahi." Their preachers preach to them every Sunday in their churches in their vernacular, which is Arabic. Just like the Catholic Pope preaches in Latin. Sunday services in many parts of Egypt too are conducted in Arabic because that is their native language. Don't let the fear mongers continue to spread fear and sow discord among us. Those saddled with the task of uniting us have become instruments of division. Arabic is not Islam and Islam is not Arabic. One is a language, the other is a religion. Arabic is a language like English, like French, like German, like Spanish, like Hindi, like Yoruba, Hausa and Ibo. It is not a religion. So if you like another man's English language and claim to hate another man's Arabic language because most Muslims speak Arabic, my friend, you are simply a slave of accidental civilization. So I am wondering why all these topsy-turvy? Why all the hullabaloo? Why the hoopla? Why the noise and the evil intent to use other people's languages to play politics in our country? Are we not tired of dividing ourselves for wetin no concern us? I am sure the owners of these languages will just be laughing at us in their hearts. +COPIED. |
