A crippled man was accused of stealing a bag of salt and was charged to court. After hearing the prosecuting and defense counsels, the judge said:

Judge: The prosecuting counsel has failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this crippled man actually stole the salt. Besides, how on earth could he have carried it without help? I hereby discharge and acquit the accused and order that he takes the bag of salt with 20, 000.
The crippled man quickly jumped out from the soap box, lifted the bag of salt perfectly and set out of the court room.
The judge said oohhhh come back here man, it is obvious that you actually stole the salt,

Nairaland GeneralGod Says Jonathan ‘ll Win Election -prophet Mustapha by BabaIbada(op): 8:34am On Mar 14, 2011
THE joy of every good leader is to leave a lasting and beffiting legacy for his subjects. This and many more benefits of democracy are, no doubt, the desire of Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, President of the Republic Of Nigeria, for Nigerians and foreigners living within the nation’s border alike amidst a peaceful and fruitful reign.

Contrary to his expectations, however, a man of God, Prophet Solomon Moses Oni Mustapha, has warned that the President should earnestly seek the face of God so that the nation will not break up during his rule as president.

Prophet Mustapha, who presides over the Seed of Christ Golden Church, Gbaremu-Idi Obi, Airport area of Ibadan, Oyo State, said God actually told him that President Jonathan would scale through and win the forthcoming elections to become the substantive elected president of the nation, adding however, that the president needs to fast and pray for seven days, begining as soon as he sees this publication.

The Prophet, an indigene of Isanlu in Kogi State, said the seven days prayer and fasting by Mr President was to avert series of crises which could culminate into the nation’s break up.

Prophet Mustapha, who spoke with our reporter during a visit to the Tribune House recently, said what would happen prior to and during the election would be mild when compared with post election events.

He, therefore, enjoined all Nigerians, to observe the 1st, 2nd and 3rd days of December 2011 as days of fasting and serious prayer for Nigeria.

According to him, the fasting and prayer is to ward off the crisis which would rear its ugly head in 2012.

Likewise, the Prophet admonished all South West governors to pray very well concerning the aftermath of the 2011 elections, so that the covenant for some people’s lives would not be broken.

He, however, singled out Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State, even as he urged the Governor to seek the face of God. Prophet Mustapha claimed that there was a covenant between the Governor and God that he would rule for a second term, adding however, that the Governor has broken the covenant.

Popularly known as Baba Se Bi Oba, the Prophet also urged the leaders and people of Lagos, Osun and Kogi to be very prayerful as the elections would be tough in those states, adding that the powerful aspirants who some people thought would be victorious in the elections might not win afterall.

Born in 1969 to Mr Samuel and Mrs Esther Mustapha, both farmers based in Isanlu, Kogi State, Prophet Mustapha, who attended Kaduna Division (KD) Primary School, Isanlu after which he learnt a printing job, said his ministerial appointment was prophesied.

His words: “Although my parents were not Christians when I was born but my mother told me that when she was carrying my pregnancy, she was told that the child in her was a male and that he would be a great prophet.”

Baba Se Bi Oba, who said he had prophesies concerning his call, right from his primary school days, claimed to have been seeing visions and hearing from God since he was eight years old. The man of God who had attended Christ Apostolic Church and the Cherubim and Seraphim Church received the call into full time ministry in 2002. He left Ekiti State where he was residing for Ibadan to heed God’s call in 2003 and started his church in 2004.

He had wanted to call his church, a penticostal gathering, the Holy Trinity Evangelical Church but he said that God told him to name it Seed of Christ Golden Church.

Going down memory lane, Prophet Mustapha recollected that the first miracle the Lord wrought through him was in 1988 at Oke-Orin in Ikole Ekiti where he had prayed for an Urhobo woman who was bed ridden and she got up and walked immediately.

Nairaland GeneralJune 12 Was Not Free And Fair - Prof Okon Uya by BabaIbada(op): 2:26am On Mar 01, 2011
The former chairman of National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (NECON), Professor Okon Uya, has said no election ever conducted in Nigeria, including the much talked about June 12, 1993, election has ever been free, fair and credible. Uyah, who was also in the Electoral Reforms Committee headed by the former chief justice of the federation, Justice Muhammadu Uwais, has equally revealed that since the first election was conducted in Nigeria, every election in the country has been rigged, with that of 2007 being the worst election ever.

The professor of history and former Nigerian ambassador to Algeria, told Daily Sun that though June !2, 1993 election came close to being a free election but still fell short of most of the ingredients of a free, fair and credible election.
“The problem in Nigeria, we cannot in all honesty, say that there has been anytime, even the First Republic we talk about, where the government in Nigeria has been the reflection of the wishes of the Nigerian people.

“I was shocked in the Electoral Reform Committee in which I played a very important part, to discover through historical research, that since 1922 where the first election was held in Nigeria, there has not been any election in Nigeria which has not been rigged. Every election has been rigged.

“That is to say it has been prevented from reflecting the wishes of the people. The only difference is that some are more rigged than the others. That is a statement of fact – even June 12. I was chairman of INEC (NECON). I took over from Humphrey Nwosu.
“I have refrained from talking about June 12. I have my reasons. I don’t think it is time, as a public servant, to begin to talk about things which came to your possession by virtue of being in that office. That is a violation of the very principle of oath of office. That is my position and I stand by it.
“But let me put it this way: June 12 came nearest to acceptable election in Nigeria. But it wasn’t free, fair and credible. I don’t want to say more than that. I had the records for those months I was there.

“The election could be said to have been free because people cast their votes. But it was not credible in that very few Nigerians voted; about only 13 percent. You have made me to talk about it; but I don’t want to. What it means is that about 14 million out of a possible 60 million people voted.

“So you cannot say it represented the wishes of the people. There were so many other technical problems which I don’t want to bother you with. Votes were cast; votes were counted in only 14 states out of the then 30 states. So the votes were not fully counted. I don’t know why; I wasn’t there. I inherited the problem. I don’t know what happened, but the reality was that the votes were not counted everywhere.
“We needed the votes to be counted in at least 25 states to satisfy the constitutional requirements which said at least two thirds of the states in the country. But we had 14, was that two thirds? So the election did not satisfy that constitutional requirement.

“Election is not all about voting; it involves voting; the votes counted and the votes counted satisfy every laid down constitutional requirement – political action, constitutional action and there is a legal action. Those three elements must be present to declare an election successful.
“What was present was a political aspect in the June 12 – the legal aspect? Problematic. The constitutional aspect? Problematic. So there are issues involved which is not to say what was done was right or wrong. It is just to say that by the laws of Nigeria, these are technical things which were not satisfied. So even June 12 fell shot of being credible.

“Now what is painful for me in that whole exercise was to find that the 2007 election was the worst. In order words, here we are starting from 1922, instead of progressing, solving some of the problems, we are adding new dimensions to the problem to the extent that the very last one became the worst.”
Uya said the scenario has become frightening for a country blessed in so many ways such as people who are known around the world as intellectuals.
The former NECON helmsman said the problem was not only on the electoral body which midwifes the election, nor the legal framework put in to guide the conduct of the election nor on the electorate, but on all on them.

“You know the mistake Nigerians make is that if you get the chairman of INEC who is credible, honest and a person of integrity, they believe that the thing would work. It is a lie. Attahiru Jega is a very thorough man. But the day he was appointed I told him welcome to being abused by Nigerians, because that’s what we have suffered.

“It is important for the chairman to be somebody who is independent minded; who cannot be intimidated. But the success of election is beyond that.”
Uya warned Nigerians to ensure that they get the next election right as it would mark the turning point in the nation’s socio-political existence, stressing that the political upheaval happening in the Arab world was possible in Nigeria, “because this election is about the sole of Nigeria. If we don’t get it right, we will have a very difficult time in the years ahead, if at we will survive. “

He also talked about his controversial appointment as NECON chairman, claiming he was not consulted by the Babangida administration before his appointment, else he would have rejected the job even as he said he was happy to have served the nation in those few months.
Uya who is now an ordained pastor, and senior pastor of Leaders Love Life Ministry Calabar, explained that the only regret he has was that the wasn’t allowed to conduct the next round of election before General Sani Abacha sent him packing, but revealed that most of the programmes that INEC took off with in 1998, were drawn up in his brief tenure.

PoliticsCourt Extends Five Governors’ Terms by BabaIbada(op): 1:49am On Feb 24, 2011
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission from conducting governorship elections in Kogi, Adamawa, Sokoto, Bayelsa and Cross River states.

In his judgment which lasted for about two hours in the consolidated suits by Governors Ibrahim Idris (Kogi), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Timipriye Sylva (Bayelsa) and Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Justice Adamu Bello held that there were no vacancies in the affected states for now.

The judge added that the tenure of the concerned governors would not expire until 2012.

He held that the tenure of the governors legally started in 2008 when they took fresh oaths of office and allegiance following the nullification of their April 14, 2007 elections by the courts.

The court held that since the 2007 elections were nullified and set aside by competent courts, the oath of office and allegiance subscribed to by the five governors had all been nullified and set aside along with the elections.

Justice Bello held that in line with section 180 of the 1999 Constitution, the tenure of the governors legally commenced in 2008 and not in 2007.

According to the judge, the 2007 elections used by Independent National electoral Commission to determine the tenure of the governors did not exist in the eyes of the law, having been legally declared null and void by competent courts as nothing can stand on nothing.

He, however, said that although section 180 of the 1999 Constitution was amended in 2010 by the National Assembly and signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan, the amendment had no effect on the five governors since their rerun elections were conducted in 2008.

The judge said, “There is nowhere in the world where a constitution takes retroactive effect as erroneously held by INEC.

“The said amendment cannot be used to determine the tenure of the governors who took oath of office in 2008.” He, therefore, directed INEC to put on hold governorship election in the states and ordered that elections would only take place in the states next year.

He said, “INEC cannot validly conduct elections in the five states until 60 days to the expiration of the tenures of the present occupants.

“The notice of elections, received nominations, and timetable issued by INEC for the April 2011 elections are unlawful, illegal and contrary to section 180 of the constitution.”

Reacting to the verdict, INEC on Wednesday said that it would give the judgment to its legal team to study.

Director of Information and Public Affairs in the commission, Mr. Emmanuel Umenger, said this shortly after the verdict was delivered in Abuja.

He said, “It is too early for us to speak about the Court judgment delivered today. The Commission does not just react on issues like this, besides, the judgment has not been served on us yet.

“We have a consortium of lawyers who will have to study the judgment and advice the commission accordingly, we can only act based on their advice.”

In their reaction, Idris and his Bayelsa state counterpart, Sylva, said it was a triumph of the rule of law and victory for their states and the nation.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Idris said, “I am grateful to God, it is a victory for the people of Kogi State. I will lay a proper foundation for whoever is going to take over from me.”

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Doifie Ola, Sylva said, “The extension will give the administration more time to deepen development and democracy in Bayelsa.”

The plaintiffs had sued INEC and the Peoples Democratic Party, seeking legal interpretation on whether their tenure in office would be extended beyond May 29 this year.

They had challenged the decision of the INEC to conduct governorship elections in their states in April 2011, claiming that their tenure would still subsist beyond 2011.

The plaintiffs, who were represented by Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Samson Ameh (SAN), Kanu Agabi (SAN), Ladi Williams (SAN) and Paul Erokoro (SAN) respectively, stated that INEC was wrong to have concluded that the tenure of their clients would expire in May based on the fact that their elections conducted on April 14, 2007 were nullified by the courts.

They had contended that their tenure could not lapse in 2011 because they took oath of offices and oath of allegiance in 2008 after those of 2007 had been voided and set aside by different courts.

The Federal Government, a defendant in the case had, through its lawyer, Chief Niyi Akintola (SAN), asked the court not to grant the tenure elongation on the grounds that the amended constitution was in opposition to the request of the governors.

He had argued that since the governors won the rerun, their tenure started from their first oath of office in 2007 in line with the amended constitution.

But the PDP supported the governors, saying that their tenures commenced on the day they were inaugurated after the rerun.

The national legal Adviser of the PDP preparations, Chief Olusola Oke, had argued that the 2007 elections which brought the governors to office in the first instance were declared illegal, unlawful, null and void and set aside by law courts.

He contended that the oath of office taken along with the voided elections were of no effect in law.

With this development, the tenure of the affected governors will end on the following dates: Ibrahim Idris (April 5, 2012); Aliyu Wamakko (May 28, 2012); Murtala Nyako (April 30, 2012); Timipre Sylva (May 29, 2012) and Liyel Imoke (August 28, 2012).

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state had a similar suit.

But Justice Abdul Kafarati of a Federal High Court in Abuja had on October 7, 2010, held that Amaechi must quit office on May 29, 2011, though it was Mr. Celestine Omehia who was first sworn in as the winner of the governorship election in the state on May 29, 2007.

Delivering judgment in a suit by a former legal adviser of the Peoples Democratic in Rivers State, Chief Cyprian Chukwu, Justice Kafarati had also held that Amaechi was not entitled to stay in office beyond May 29, 2011.

The judge had held that since Amaechi was deemed to be the candidate of the PDP in the governorship election, he would be deemed to have assumed that office on May 29, 2007 when Omehia was sworn in.

He held that Amaechi’s tenure was a continuation of Omehia’s term, at the time of election.

The judge said that the case of Anambra State Governor Peter Obi v. INEC did not apply on the grounds that the election petitions tribunal sitting in Anambra State nullified Dr. Chris Ngige’s election.

Justice Kafarati said Omehia’s election was not nullified.

Christianity EtcPrimate Ayodele Donates To Mosque by BabaIbada(op): 2:45am On Feb 20, 2011
THE president of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Babatunde Elijah Ayodele has called for unity between the Christians and Muslims.

The cleric who stated this in Lagos at the weekend when he donated electricity generating set and mats to Alhaja Ojuolape Memorial Mosque at Oke-Offa, Ejigbo, Lagos as part of activities marking his birthday, said only when there is unity that security of Nigeria as a nation could be guaranteed.

Primate Ayodele who was received by the Imam of the mosque, Alhaji Mohammed Alimi Adeola said religious and political violence was an ill-wind which should be avoided, stressing that adherents of both faith should at all times pray for the progress of the nation.

The cleric also donated computers to Isolo High School, Metro College, Ilasa and money to the charity purse of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for the abandoned patients.

While some widows were empowered, awards were also presented to some journalists and wives of journalists. UTME forms were also distributed freely to some students who are orphans.

SportsBabayaro Declared Bankrupt •chased By Creditors In Uk by BabaIbada(op): 1:48am On Feb 18, 2011
FORMER Toon player, Celestine Babayaro is being chased by creditors after being declared bankrupt. The ex-Nigerian international, who was reported to earn £25,000-a-week at one stage, has been listed alongside a dinner lady and glass cutter in an announcement printed in the London Gazette.

The player, who won the gold with Nigeria at Atlanta '96 Olympic, has been living at an address on Laleham Road, in Shepperton, Middlesex, according to the order. Neighbours said they feared the former full-back, now 32, had fallen on hard times because the upkeep of his £475,000 property had slipped.

It is understood the player who started 66 times for the Magpies, had bought the house for family members to be near him when he signed for Chelsea, in 1997. The house is also next door to the home where his younger brother, Kennedy was understood to have lived until he died of tuberculosis in 2007.

A neighbour, who lives on the same street as Babayaro said: “You can tell money’s difficult because the home used to be maintained really nicely, but now it’s a bit of a mess. “You can see where the conservatory is starting to fall down and the garden is completely overgrown. They came and asked to borrow my lawnmower but I had to say no because the grass was too long and would have broken it.”

The bankruptcy order was first entered at a court in Croydon, London, last year, before being confirmed last month. It is understood Babayaro has recently been living abroad. The financial meltdown is the latest in a string of disappoint-ments for the U-17 World Cup winner in 1993.

After an injury-plagued spell at St James’s Park, Babayaro’s career stalled when he moved to the US in the hope of starring alongside David Beckham at LA Galaxy. But he was released by the club, and his hopes of a comeback with Portsmouth were dogged by a bout of malaria. Babayaro is understood to have racked up debt despite having the rest of his contract paid by Newcastle he was released in 2007.

He was signed for United for £1m by Graeme Souness, in 2005, and famously chose to play for the team just hours after his brother’s death.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Is Guardiola Afraid Or Just Playing A Mind Game? by BabaIbada(op): 1:16am On Feb 16, 2011
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has admitted he does not expect the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie against Arsenal to be decisive.

The Spanish manager also admitted that while he admires Arsenal's style of play, he does not relish coming up against them for a second successive season.

"I do not expect a game tomorrow that is going to be comfortable, or that the tie will be resolved here," Guardiola stated during a pre-match press conference. "If we are defeated by a big margin, we will go out on the attack to win.

"I like Arsenal, but do not like playing against them. The reason behind this is what they do with the ball. They do not run when they possess it.

"I also imagine they will tighten up compared to last year and try to do better."

The tactician hopes his counterpart Arsene Wenger plays Frenchman Samir Nasri, as Guardiola is impressed by the 23-year-old.

"I hope Nasri can play," he added. "I always prefer it because he can influence the team and a match.
"We have a very tough tie - possibly the hardest and most complicated we have ever had. We must be very prepared, very strong and do well in the competition. I think that we play better in the quarter and semi-finals rather than the Round of 16.

"We must try and play well, take control of the ball and score, which is vital to do away from home in Europe. I have a lot of respect for Arsenal. I have some idea on them from last season's matches.

Celebrities"buttock-implant" Surgery Kills British Born Nigerian Claudia Aderotimi by BabaIbada(op): 3:25pm On Feb 10, 2011
An aspiring hip-hop dancer and choreographer, Claudia Aderotimi, has died of heart attack in the US after cosmetics surgeons of shady professional background injected her with buttocks enhancing silicon.

The 20-year old British-born Nigerian and her friends came to the US for the surgery after she arranged with a group of women who advertised their services online. The butt-enhancement treatments were administered on Claudia at the Hampton Inn hotel in Southwest area of Philadelphia.

Shortly after the treatment she complained of chest pain and had difficulty breathing. She had to be rushed to the Mercy Fitzgerald hospital in Darby, Pennsylvanaia where she was pronounced dead before doctors could save her.

In October 2005, Nigeria's first lady, Stella Obasanjo died in an exclusive Spanish hospital after she underwent a liposuction at the Molding Clinic in Marbella. The surgeon involved in the surgery was jailed for one year in 2009 by a Malaga Court in Spain.

Police authorities in Philadelphia are yet to make any arrests but they have questioned one of the women involved in the procedure that took Claudia's life on Monday.

The political atmosphere in Kano exploded with excitement yesterday, following the surprise inclusion of Alhaji Mohammadu Abacha, the son of Nigeria’s former Head of State, the late Sani Abacha, as one of the four gubernatorial candidates for the April polls in the state.

His name was unexpectedly published by the state headquarters of the Independent Electoral Commission of Nigeria (INEC), when they released their official list of candidates at about 4:30pm yesterday.
Others whose names were published by the electoral body are the former governor of the state, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (PDP), the incumbent deputy governor of the state, Alhaji Abdullahi Tijjani Mohammadu Gwarzo (A C N) and the candidate of the ANPP, Alhaji Sagir Mahhamed Sagir.

Following the announcement, supporters of Abacha burst into wild celebration, seizing major roads in the state capital, chanting victory songs and distributing his posters to passersby.
The Director-General of the Mohammed Abacha Campaign Organisation, Alhaji Mohammadu Sulieman Manbo, expressed delight with the development and prayed that if elected as the governor of Kano State, they would work with all shades and groups in the state.

He tasked their party members, including those who lost to rally round their candidate for the election in the state, saying that the battle ahead was that of team spirit.
Abacha’s name had initially been withdrawn by his party, Congress for Progress Change (CPC), resulting in a law suit.
Manbo recalled the ugly incident leading to the withdrawal of the name of their principal, saying “The results of several local government councils were deliberately cancelled perhaps to deny him of his victory.”

“After so many days of waiting, after 19 days after the conduct of the elections, the winner was surreptitious declared through the back door and the name of General Lawal Jafaru Isa was taken to INEC for the reasons best known to those who did it,” he stated.
It could be recalled that Alhaji Mohammadu Sani Abacha had, on acount of this withdrawal, dragged his party, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Mohammadu Buhari and INEC before a Federal High Court presided over by Justice Gabriel Kolawole.

In the said suit, he sought for an order, restraining CPC, from submitting any other name other than his to the INEC.
He argued that in the party’s primary, conducted on January 12, 2011, he scored the highest number of votes of 144,066.
