CultureRe: Ohu, Osu: Nigeria's Slave Descendants Prevented From Marrying Who They Want by Babanick: 5:04pm On Sep 15, 2020
Too many kids on Nairaland, everything quickly turns tribal.
Firstly, there is a difference between 'osu ' and 'ohu'. While the former is a religious slave, the later is an acquired slave like your maids and salesperson.
Ohu is an acquired slave like your maid or salesperson. They may not have all the privileges that a diala( son of the soil) enjoys, but can grow to become an important part of the community and many times, marry even the masters daughter or relative.
Osu on the other hand, has different categories; some were said to be people who committed sacrilege and thus willed to the gods, some were those who went under the protection of deities in times of war and famine... in all, they are all seen as properties of one deity or the other.
Not every community in Igboland still observe this practice and Christianity is really helping to kill off these beliefs. In truth, they are rather feared than segregated, people believe one can receive the wrath of the deity they are subscribed to if they marry or associate with them.
Igbos are highly cultural and religious people, it will take a little while and cultural engagement to stop most of these beliefs. There is nothing supreme court can do in this case, your family will not even show up on the wedding day.

Throwing insults at people because of their diverse view does not make you more intelligent. My first comment was meant to be a sarcastic comment, that's why i ask you to go read it again. As intelligent as you are making me feel, you still didn't get the message.

Apina:
Instead of asking me, u could have simply made your own findings.

The NNPC is the sole importer of PMS, and the landing cost is said to be #175. Pump price of fuel is fixed @ #145 and thus the NNPC has to balance its account . Thus, #30 naira which is recorded as loss on the part of the NNPC when selling to independent marketers at #145 is then refunded to the importer(NNPC) which in the past, importation was a joint venture carried out by both the marketers and NNPC. Here comes the highlight, That #30 is whats called subsidy and in this case, the NNPC after selling crude and imports PMS from the money realised from the sales, then takes that #30 per liter imported daily based on THEIR OWN FIGURES which is whatever they say it is with no external body or agency allowed to Vet or check the daily importation.

The NNPC claims to pay the above subsidy to the tone of #1.4 Trillion monthly as opposed to the #300 billion in 2015 before this government took charge. In 2015 we were paying #87 per liter @ #300 billion for subsidy but in 2018 we are paying #145 per liter and subsidy is at #1.4 trillion.

So what changed in these 3 years that took the subsidy cost to #1.4 trillion even after the government denied not paying subsidy while fuel price went up by 70%? Why did the government deny paying subsidy ever? And why are we paying more for fuel or PMS if the price of subsidy went up by 300%?

Be objective in your answer. Hope you now understand what I'm saying undecided
Go read my comment again, very slowly.

You are just being foolish for making this statement. Is the government not paying subsidy to itself? We are paying more for fuel and yet the subsidy is 3 times what was being paid when we were buying at a lower rate undecided
This comment is very confusing, can you break it down a little, I no finish school.

LaudableXX:
MKO merited the honour, but GEJ's renaming of UNILAG after Abiola was an insensitive Greek gift. sad It was done to rubbish the brand identity of UNILAG, and it was done without consulting widespread stakeholders who had invested time, energy, efforts and resources into the growth and development of the university. GEJ wanted to restrict Abiola's honour to a mere Lagos affair, without any impact. undecided There were new federal universities opened in the south by the same GEJ, that could have been renamed after Abiola, without creating a fuss, but GEJ chose to ignore those options. GEJ obviously had a sinister, spiteful and ill-conceived motive in changing the name of UNILAG. A leader is meant to consult widely before taking such monumental decisions, but GEJ refused to do so. Why?? huh
You are very correct. The same way he did not consult widely before removing fuel subsidy. Thank God PMB corrected that by "consulting widely" and even paying more after removing it. Good morning
PhonesRe: Margaret Omobolawa Opeyemi Dies Of Phone Triggered Gas Explosion by Babanick: 10:16pm On Dec 15, 2017
Most people keep believing this cell phone/gas/fuel rubbish without pointing to a single test or experiment to back it up. Do people really know the amount of electromagnet wave flying around us? The wave from cell phone is not enough to ignite anything else it would have been to dangerous to humans. The most realistic culprit is static electricity and its very common around this period(dry season).

Most of us commenting here have not left the comfort of our environment so am not surprised at some comments. You need to travel round the country to know how other ethnic groups do there own, this is Igbo culture. U have to show that u are capable as a man before going into marriage. The whole items there are not more 250k and no body said its compulsory to do everything on the list they usually give u when u come for there daughters hand in marriage.
FamilyRe: After 25 Years, Woman Dumped 70-year-old Hubby For First Love by Babanick: 4:56pm On Feb 19, 2017
They believe the woman is supposed to end up in marriage, so there is no need to keep anything for her. At least they try as much as possible to educate their female children as they do the males so they can also be independent.
abbey621:
Igbos are wonderful people but this is one aspect of their culture that scares me! A man and/or woman work their entire life to gather wealth and properties yet when they die their efforts goes to only a male child or the man's family because females are second class citizens and are not worthy of possessions....bullsh*t angry angry lesson for every man out there, as soon as you start acquiring wealth get yourself a will backed by the legal system, protect your children from disguised evil known as tradition!

EducationRe: Video Of DSS Operatives Beating Teachers In Calabar Emerges by Babanick: 10:59am On Feb 09, 2017
What ever the case may be, you don't have the right to take laws into your own hands. The most civilized thing to do, is to report the case to the nearest police station and get the teacher arrested and charged to court. what if you hurt other people in the process of trying to deal with the said teacher, does that make you right?
saaedlee:
Rubbish, let the teachers take it to court then the pictures of the bleeding girl will be make public, (according to someone close to the parents of the kid)then the public can decided if it was just 2 strokes of the cane could cause such damage.

I am against physical beating as a means of correction. There are more effective ways of correcting an erring kid. You don't have the right to lay hands on a kid you were paid to teach, protect and care for!

But the DSS did wrong by firing live rounds in the school though, but on reading the official report, one gets to understand what really happened in that school that day!

But let's not forget that its possible that that particular teacher was asking that kid out? Just asking?

Surprisingly, the teacher who caused this whole drama has been quiet all the while, does anyone care to ask why?

What cost Jonathan to have construct modern rail throughout the country with the Oil boom.
Bro please can u tell us anywhere in the world where electric train is used to ferry goods of this size? GEJ govt had its own bad side especially during the election period but u must give credit to some of the good works he did.
