Kaduna State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in some communities in Kaduna South and Chikun local government areas with immediate effect. According to the state government, the areas affected in Kaduna south include Barnawa, Kakuri, and Television while those of Chikun are Maraban Rido, Sabon Tasha, Narayi and Ungwan Romi. Daily Trust reports that the government’s decision followed Saturday’s break-in into certain warehouses in the two LGAs where youths carted away stash of food items believed to be stored from the Covid-19 palliatives earlier distributed. A statement issued by the state Commissioner for Internals Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan stated that security agencies have been directed to arrest and prosecute anyone found violating the curfew and those responsible for breakdown of law and order. “Security agencies have further been directed to effect the arrest and prosecution of anyone found looting and destroying properties,” it stated. While condemning what it described as concerted incitement being done on social media, the state government appealed to all communities to reject incitement and resist the attempt to create chaos and anarchy. |

A young graduate from Katsina state identified as Usman Abubakar, has reportedly burnt all his certificates including National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) University degree, WAEC. According to reports on various Hausa Facebook pages, the frustrated young man tore all the certificates and set them ablaze because he was unable to secure a job since graduation. He gathered the certificates, tore them to pieces first, then set them on fire. See photos below... Usman is not the first Nigerian graduate to do this, recall that in 2019, a graduate burnt all his certificates, saying school is the biggest scam in the world. In a video shared online, he was seen burning all his school certificates from Junior High School to the University level. According to him, going to school and acquiring all the certificates does not guarantee success, based on his own experience.

Two months after they suffered from a fire incident at their Oka, Umudike Mbano home, deaf and dumb couple are yet to get proper medical attention. Thursday May 28, 2020 started as a normal day for the family of 32-year-old Uzochukwu and Mrs Ihuaku Igbokwe (25) in their one-room apartment barely enough to contain a 3 by 6 feet bed located in their family compound in the agrarian community of Oka, Umudike Ugiri in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State. While Uzochukwu went off early to the farm, his heavily-pregnant wife stayed back to attend to house chores. As the days wore on, it was briefly interrupted by a light shower, prompting Uzochukwu to come back home sooner than expected. With the approach of dawn, the couple relaxed outside, communicating as usual in their sign language, while their daughter Ugochi was lying inside the room. But tragedy struck at about 9pm. Ihuaku had gotten up to light the lantern whose oil had gone low. However, hell was let loose as she struck the matches, there was bedlam as the room was engulfed by a raging flame. Uzochukwu, who was outside could not immediately fathom what was happening because of his limitation, but as he turned round, he saw his room engulfed in fire. He rushed inside to rescue his wife and daughter who where at that time fighting for their lives however, before the duo could be rescued, they had suffered various degrees of burns. Ihuaku, with her pregnancy, suffered severe burns on her chest and abdomen while the worse affected was Ugochi, who suffered about 75 per cent burns all over the body. Uzochukwu’s uncle, Peter Nwanguma, who narrated the incident when Daily Trust Saturday visited the family penultimate Thursday, said the shout attracted other members of the family who came to their rescue. According to him, the victims were initially taken to Joint Hospital Mbano, where they were referred to the Imo State University Teaching Hospital Orlu, but were curiously rejected by the authorities. Nwanguma, who is a staff of Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, said, “Immediate the fire started, we rushed in to put it off and rescue them. “We removed their clothes and rushed them to Joint Hospital Mbano for the initial treatment because the burns were too much. “There, we were given a referral letter to IMSUTH Orlu, but to our amazement, they were rejected. Nwanguma, who showed our correspondent the referral letter, said that they had no other option than to bring them back home where they have been receiving treatment locally since then. The referral letter from the Mbano Joint Hospital to Burns and Plastic Unit of IMSUTH Orlu, stated that the victims suffered from kerosene explosion while trying to refill a lantern. The letter further stated that the hospital has tried to give them initial resuscitation and asked IMSUTH to take over. He expressed surprise at the action of IMSUTH authorities. However, it was not all sorrow for the family as Ihuaku was on June 29 delivered of a bouncing baby boy. Nwanguma described the birth of Baby Chima as miraculous as the grieving mother delivered the baby right in their home with the help of women around. He said the plight of the family was brought to limelight by a Facebook user, who visited them. Since then, he said, a lot of people have been to the house to offer one assistance or the other. Indeed, it was a sorrowful sight as little Ugochi lay on a foam covered with a net to prevent flies from feasting on her wounds. A woman guide, who accompanied our correspondent to the Igbokwe family, was moved to tears when a fly entered the net. Ugochi tried to draw the attention of her parents, but they could not hear her until their attention was drawn to her shrill cries. With no hope of any medical attention, the Igbokwes have taken their plight as fate. Right now, Baby Chima cannot be breastfed as his mother’s two breasts are still covered with wounds. For now, the baby has to rely on baby milk for sustenance. All efforts to get the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Damaris Osunkwo, were unsuccessful. Calls to her phone by our correspondent were unanswered. However, her counterpart in the Ministry of Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, said the state government is unaware of the plight of the family. He however promised to get all the necessary information and further act accordingly https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/two-months-after-fire-incident-deaf-couple-yet-to-get-medical-care.html?platform=hootsuite

The Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has sentenced Yunusa Dahiru (AKA Yellow), to 26 years imprisonment for child trafficking and sexual exploitation of Ese Oruru. Ese was reportedly abducted by Dahiru in Bayelsa in 2015, taken to Kano State where she was allegedly forcefully married and impregnated by Dahiru. Delivering judgement in the case on Thursday, Justice Jane Inyang, held that Dahiru was not guilty of count one which bothered on abduction. The judge, however, found him guilty of child trafficking, illicit sex, sexual exploitation and unlawful carnal knowledge. He was jailed five years in count two (Child trafficking), seven years in count three (illicit sex), seven years in count four (Sexual exploitation) and seven years in count five (Unlawful carnal knowledge). The judge, however, held that the sentences should run consecutively, which means the convict will spend a maximum of 26 years in jail, except if he gets his conviction overturned by the appellate court. The case of Dahiru and Ese generated a lot of reactions in 2015 when it was first reported. Ese, the daughter of Mr Charles and Rose Oruru, who hail from Uwheru community in Ughelli, Delta State, was allegedly married off to Dahiru without her parents’ consent and subsequently impregnated. While in Kano, Ese, who was 13 years old at the time, was reportedly converted to Islam and renamed Aisha. Ese was later rescued by the police in Kano with a five-month-old pregnancy, allegedly belonging to Dahiru. Youths in Ibi-Ade in Ogun Waterside council area on Thursday took to the streets in protest against police officers they said were responsible for the death on Wednesday night of a pregnant woman whom officers enforcing Covid-19 lockdown delayed from giving birth. The youths threatened to burn down the divisional police headquarters in the town. The woman, yet unidentified, was due for childbirth but police officers enforcing lockdown at a checkpoint stopped the motorcycle conveying her to hospital. A witness said the woman was already bleeding but her ride was delayed for hours before the officers allowed the motorcyclist to continue. She died shortly after arriving hospital from suspected blood loss, sparking outrage among the community’s youths. The traditional ruler, Alarege of Ibi-Ade, Oba Kola Rahimi and some eminent personalities in the community helped pacify the youths. A youth in the community, Festus Ogun, said, “The true situation is that, the woman was in labour and she was already bleeding profusely and being taken to the hospital. “On the way to the hospital, the motorcycle carrying her was stopped by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, she was delayed for hours and it was that delay that led to her death.” The spokesman of the Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident, but absolved police officers of culpability in the woman’s death. “The officers stopped them and asked questions; they said that the woman is bleeding, so the officers asked them to go to the hospital. About 10 or 15 minutes later, the woman died during labour. Maybe she had lost a lot of blood before they decide to take her to the hospital. ” She hasn’t even given birth before she died. So, those people came back and said that the policemen that stopped them at the checkpoint delayed them from getting to the hospital earlier, saying that they killed her. How is that possible?” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/death-of-pregnant-woman-stopped-by-lockdown-police-sparks-outrage-in-ogun.html

Two Nigerians have been rated among the richest sports stars of the world who are aged 30 or under. According to a list unveiled by Sunday Times in Britain, Anthony Joshua is ranked the second richest after Gareth Bale of Real Madrid. Joshua is also the only non-footballer, on the list dominated by Manchester United players. This may not be a surprise as Manchester United is one of the wealthiest clubs in the world. Odion Ighalo, a new entrant into the list, is number 15. He is one of the five Manchester United players rated. Joining them is goalkeeper David de Gea. The Spaniard – who became Manchester United’s highest-paid star after signing a new £375000-a-week contract in September – is joint-fourth at £34m. In the top 18 Anthony Joshua is the only non-footballer having made the cut. The boxer sits second in the list with a wealth of £107m. This is an increase of £58m from 2019 – the biggest fortune rise of anyone. The 30-year-old made the majority of that money from his two bouts with Andy Ruiz Jnr. The first fight – which resulted in a shock loss – took place at Madison Square Garden, New York in June.

Saudi Arabia on Sunday partially eased a 24-hour curfew in place to combat the coronavirus pandemic, except in hotspots including the Muslim holy city of Mecca. The curfew will be relaxed between 9am and 5pm and malls and retailers will be allowed to reopen in all regions of the kingdom until May 13, the official Saudi Press Agency reported. But a round-the-clock lockdown will be maintained in some areas including Mecca, which has reported the kingdom’s highest number of infections in recent days despite being sealed off. Many countries around the Middle East and North Africa have announced a similar easing of lockdown restrictions as Muslims mark the holy fasting month of Ramadan. Saudi Arabia, which has reported the highest number of infections in the Arab world, is scrambling to limit the spread of the disease at home. On Saturday the health ministry said deaths from the respiratory illness had risen to 136, while confirmed infections rose to 16,299 with 2,215 people reported to have recovered from the illness. Last month, Saudi Arabia suspended the year-round “umrah” pilgrimage over fears of the coronavirus pandemic spreading in Islam’s holiest cities. Authorities are yet to announce whether they will proceed with this year’s hajj, scheduled for the end of July, but they have urged Muslims to temporarily defer preparations for the annual pilgrimage. Last year, some 2.5 million faithful travelled to Saudi Arabia from across the world to participate in the hajj, which Muslims are obliged to perform at least once in their lives if able. The Arab world’s biggest economy has also closed cinemas, malls and restaurants and halted flights as it attempts to contain the virus. King Salman has warned of a “more difficult” fight ahead against the virus, as the kingdom faces the economic impact of virus-led shutdowns and crashing oil prices. (AFP) |
