GROWING TRENDS OF "GET RICH QUICK SYNDROME" AMONGST NIGERIAN YOUTHS. In recent years, especially in the new millennium, the urge to get rich quick amongst Nigerian youths has increased significantly. This cannot be said to be without factors necessitating this rise in the cases of youths engaging themselves in different diabolical and illegal means to make money. Money is very important no doubt. We need money for transactional purposes, for unforseen circumstances and for our daily needs. That notwithstanding, this money needs to be made through legit and legal means. On the contrary,a good number of Nigerian youths have chosen the wrong path by engaging themselves in ritual killings to make money through fast means. So far in 2022 alone, alot of ritual killings have been reported in the Nigeria media space. Top on this list are four cases that shocked the entire country. These cases ranges from that of Sofiat Kehinde,a 20 year old lady who was killed at Oke Aregba of Abeokuta,Ogun State. The three men suspects aged between 18_20 years allegedly killed and burned her head fo ritual purpose. According to reports, the deceased was said to be dating one of the killers. Also, a suspected ritual killer, Timothy Odeniyi, was arrested by men of the Amotekun Corps in Ondo State, Nigeria. The 35-year-old man confessed to newsmen that he was promised N30m if he could produce and deliver human parts to Lagos. He revealed that the human parts were to be delivered to one of his bosses living in Lagos. Timothy confessed that he went to burial grounds to harvest the body parts from corpses buried, claiming that he did not murder anyone. Other shocking cases included that of Jennifer Anthony,a student of the university of Jos,who was found lifeless at a hotel in Jos,along Zaria road,on new year's day. Some of her body parts were missing. A 20- year old Moses Oko was arrested in connection with the crime in Benue state after he fled from Jos for committing the crime. In another case, Afeez Olalere confessed to killing his younger brother for money ritual purposes. He was arrested during a stop and search operation along Itamaga, Ikorodu road in Lagos State by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command. Afeez confessed during interrogation that his mother encouraged him to kill his younger brother after a herbalist she took him to had told him to sacrifice one life which must be his sibling. He had planned with his mother to poison his 21-year-old brother to death. They harvested the required body parts and took his remains to the mortuary. Factors such as poor parental upbringing, careless flaunt of affluence by celebrities on the social media and lack of strong punitive measures in our judicial system are responsible for the rise of this ugly trend in our society. A very good number of parents have failed in their parental responsibilities of bringing up their children in the way of the Lord. Celebrities also flaunt their wealth on social media thereby enticing this young lads wanting to live the kind of lifestyle lived by their favourite celebrities without knowing the pains and hard work they put up to be what they are. Our judicial system also cannot be left out of this. When a crime is committed and there's no punitive measure metted out to the culprit to serve as deterrent to others, there's always high possibility of others engaging in that same crime as they believe they can easily get away with it. However, a way out is still possible. First, the youths need value reorientation. The youths needs to change their values and approach to issues of life. There's no short cut to riches and affluence, even if there is,it will always be disastrous. The government should enact laws or rather enforce existing ones to serve as deterrent to others. The family as the first agent of socialization should teach their children and wards good values and morals from early stage. Our mass media can also play a pivotal role to curb or reduce this trend. As the fourth estate of the realm, they should not relent on educating the people on good morals and the dangers of engaging in illegal means to get rich quick. ©Baba Sonny |

NUISANCE OF ONLINE LOAN APPS. There has been a trend of borrowing money now which is the use of loan apps. Some persons have testified to the goodness of such loan apps while others have recounted how it ruined or nearly ruined their lives. No human is above borrowing and as a result,I'm not spoiling anybody's business as the case maybe. I said this because the loan apps are businesses owned by people and that serve as their source of livelihood. For any individual to be give loan by any financial institution, one of the basic requirement is to present a quarantor who will stand for you should you default in paying bact the loan. The guarantor must be mandated to sign some documents that can be used as evidence in court if there's a breach of contract between the two parties. At some point,I felt the owners of loan apps are stupid to some extent. This is because they give out loans to their respective customers by accepting names and contact of those presented as quarantor without signing any legal documents or even calling the said quarantor to confirm if he/she is willing to stand as quarantor for their prospective customer. Two persons (names withheld) had at different times submitted my name and contact to loan apps as quarantor. I wasn't contacted at the beginning of the transactions but when the transactions went bad. My last experience, the representative that contacted me threatened for a further action if the said customer didn't pay up the loan before a given time. Trust me,I gave her the insult of her life. Those people that have found the habit of giving my name and contact to loan apps as quarantor, continue. Sonny won't call or even text you on the reason you did that. I will vent rather at the representatives of the loan apps. I might not result to only posting this on social media platforms if such should repeat itself another time but to take a LEGAL ACTION. ©Baba Sonny.

Born into a poor family that could barely afford a three square meal in a suburb of an African country,I was denied of basic luxuries children are exposed to and the basic necessities of life. Worst of it all,I lost my father to the cold hands of death at a very young age. This made me felt my world was crashing. I engaged myself in many odd jobs to fend for myself,my poor mother and my siblings. Even as the situation came biting hard on me and my family,we never gave up hoping for a better day een though people mock us that hoping for better days is a poor man prayer. In as much as I do this odd jobs to provide food for my family,I know within myself that I'm blessed with a talent and I don't joke with it. I tried so hard to create time out of my busy days to build myself on my talent. As an African that believed so much in the power of the supreme being,I never failed to pray. My mother also came through for me on this. Fortunately for me,her prayers,my hard work and dedication paved way for me. So,all what I lacked during my childhood are now at my disposal. I can now afford to seek medical attention when I'm sick, have a good accommodation to myself, drive any car of my choice and any other comfortable things of life. Now that I can afford what I wasn't fortunate enough to have during my childhood days and many children are now deprived of those luxuries and basic necessities of life, what should I do as a responsible human? Should I turn my back on them or extend my hands of fellowship to them? On my part,I chose to help them to have access to all what I couldn't during my childhood days. But some persons will turn their back on them saying,"who provided those things for me So why should I provide for others"? This act doesn't speak good of us as humans. A life that u were not opportuned to live at a point and you have what it takes to provide for others, please extend your hands of fellowship. I never enjoyed good health care during my childhood, but I now have hospitals in my community that provide free health care to my community. These and many more I have done to improve the lives of the common man in my community. Do the little you can to ameliorate the sufferings of the people around you even if you were denied of good livelihood while growing up. This piece was based on a story of an African footballer. ©Baba Sonny. |

Religion can simply be defined as the belief in the existence of a supreme being and practices in the worship of this being. Religion has been in existence from time immemorial. On the other hand,World peace is the concept of an ideal state of happiness, freedom, and peace within and among all people and nations on Planet Earth. The number of religions in the world can't be ascertained but majorly,we have religions such as Christianity,Islam, African tradition religion, Hinduism, Judaism etc. These religions have practices that differentiate them from others. The world would have been a very peaceful place to live without religion. Religion has brought humanity more harm, hatred, segregation and above all war compared to other factors of violence in the society. The hatred and segregation brought by religion is not only restricted to adherents of the different religions hating on one another but adherents within the same religion. A Christian will hate a follow Christian because they don't worship in same church or better still not belonging to same denomination. This also applied to othe religions such as Islam, Hindu and the rest. It's quite unfortunate that all these religions preach peace which they lack, preach love they don't show, preach forgiveness which they don't demonstrate and above all, preach against war which they instigate secretly. I know some religious fanatics will come for me for this write up. But one thing that can't be disputed is the fact that religion has contributed alot to the problems of the world today. A religion wants to see itself as the best and the only sure way to a life after death here on Earth. By so doing, they speak negatively of the other religions thereby instigating hatred for the religions in their members. A world without religion will be a perfect world free of all what religion has brought to us today. Let me set the record straight, religion isn't the only way world Peace have been tampered with. But u can't help but agree with me that religion is a major player when it comes to disruption of world peace. The earlier we realise this, the better for us. ©Baba Sunday. |
