Hello all, Thanks for the usual assistance. I just completed my form and scheduled my interview. I noticed on the confirmationtion page that:

1. Police character certificate and
2. Medical Examination results are required.

Kindly advice if this document is required for B1 Visa.

Regards,
Ayokunle O.
Not required for B1/B2 visa category.

Glad you are doing good. I am too...thanks.
I'm about to start. I'm filling everything in caps, is it okay to use capital letters?
Also, my mom's home has a long address and the space provided is not enough. What do you think considering it will be where embassy letters if any would be mailed.
It's ok to fill the forms with capital letters. You can write the full address with a little explanation on a piece of paper (A4) and add it to the form. Try and print out the I-130 instruction form( USCIS ) to use has a guide to fill the form.

Well said... Lol. And for the girls another option of getting a GC is through FGM. I know a ton of girls, especially East African who got their GC via FGM.

Babbs, I came here on full undergraduate scholarship some years ago. I want her to have her green card and be able to visit whenever. I can't wait to have my mother around. I have not started the process cuz I'm weighing to see the best options eg.
How about if I file for green card for her to come here straight...is that still a good option?
Armofone, your mom coming straight with a green card, was the first scenario I gave before you said someone told you about her coming with a visiting visa then filing for her being quicker. Which I explained to you how you can go about that.
TravelRe: USA Visit Visa Part 2 by babbs45: 9:31am On Jun 24, 2016
armyofone:
Thanks you for your time babbs, highly appreciated. Someone said it is best to invite her over with visit visa then file for her here. Which do you think is quicker for her to get her green card?
If I may ask, how did you immigrate to the US? Your mom coming through with B1/B2 visa and then you filing for her is much quicker but it is little tricky. She'll be given a duration of six months to stay in US ( POE ), but the question is, if you file for her during that period, will she be interviewed before her six month elapses?

If you decide to take this route, then NVC will be eliminated out of the process. You'll have to file an I-130 form with I-485 which is the adjustment of status form with USCIS.

Not sure which state you live in but in Washington state where I used to live, it's very possible your mom would've been interviewed within that six month period cos, there are not too many cases compare to states like Maryland and New York.

Even though some people just wait it out, in violation of their B1/B2 visa, I wouldn't advice that. So this is what you can do, your mom comes in with a tourist visa, you file for her, if her interview date does come within that six months, let her come to naija and she can always come back when her interview is scheduled.

Very simple.

Thank you Babbs45. IR5, is this the same thing as filing for green card?
Can you walk me through the process, I mean step by step please wink
Yes, it's the same. Your mom falls under the Immediate Relative (IR5). So, you look under that category on the visa bulletin.

Just checked the immigrant visa processing fee is $325 and the affidavit of support fee is $120. She'll be doing Medicals, police report etc.

armyofone:
Thank you Babbs45. IR5, is this the same thing as filing for green card?

It's very simple, you don't need a lawyer. I didn't use one. You'll have to file the I-130 forms with USCIS with your supporting documents like proof of citizenship and your birth cert showing your mom's name. The filing fee is $420.
When it is approved you'll get notification indicating that the application is been forwarded to national visa center ( NVC ). And this is when the real process starts. How quickly your mom gets interviewed depends on how fast you're able to submit all documents required.

A case number will be generated for your mom and with that you can check the status of her application and determine the time she'll likely be interviewed ( visa bulletin)

The first line of action from nvc will be a form being sent to your mom ( choose an agent ). She has fill it indicating that you'll be her agent. All correspondent will then be sent to you.

You will be paying immigrants visa processing fee and affidavit of support fee. Not sure how much it is now, budget about $2000 for the whole process. Pls do check NVC website, all documents needed is clearly stated there. After all documents and fees have been received and paid, the application is then is forwarded to US embassy in Lagos. You get about a month and half notice before the interview

Try and have all your required documents ready to make the process smooth and fast. Will be happy to answer any questions.

Good luck to you.

Which is best to bring one's mom over, green card for her or a visiting visa?
How long does each process takes?
I think you should file for her ( IR5 ). Did same for my mom. The process took almost a year.

Hello everyone,
I had my visa interview december 2015 and this is how it went.
Firstly, i went to his corner but he switched off the microfone although he was talking with his colleague. Then the interview started a minute or two later.
Vo: Good morning
Me: Good morning sir!
Vo: Are you a student?
Me: yes
Vo: why Houston,texas?
Me: told him but was very nervous but it is my nature in public.
Vo: you also chose houston because of its duvetsity? Looked deeply into my eyes
Me: yes because i will get to meet new people who differ by ethnicity, socio economic status and as well degree of dissability which will be a great starting place for me
Vo: do you have any relative in the US?
Me: no (although there is a man who is my fathers friend who helped me in paying sevis fee because of that ban on western union transactions)
Vo: bought out blue paper and said you are not qualified for a us visa. (214)(b)

On my way out the nigerian staffs were just mocking me cus they saw me reading the blue paper. I wanted to hit one because i was very sad. I just controlled myself.

Can any one speculate to why i was rejected? I am 20. I have been out before to DUBAI,EYHIOPIA,EGYPT,QATER,BENIN REPUBLIC and CHINA for 1 year. My sponsors pay is pretty very high and statement also. But i am a muslim. Could it be that my religion played a part? Because americans descriminate muslims. Or could it be that they are aware of my fathers friend which i lied about? Or my program of study (INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS & DIPLOMACY) maybe because it is not ENGINEERING or MEDICINE

Best Regards!

Overstaying your B1 visa to get married and apply for a green card complicates your application as this increases the chances of USCIS thinking your marriage is fraudulent.

I don't see why he should overstay his visa and cause unnecessary complications when he can simply return to Nigeria and apply through a more straightforward process and be back within a year.

The more complicated your case the higher the chances you need a lawyer. They would not need a lawyer if he returns to Nigeria and his case is straightforward, but complicating it by over staying is not advisable and may require use of a lawyer if the USCIS come up with issues.
I don't think it is necessary for the guy to return to Nigeria, no complications will arise and the wouldn't be the need for a lawyer sef.
Talking from experience, I overstayed my B1/B2 visa. I was over a year out of status... got married to a USC and I got my temporary green card four month after filing my petition. The interview was a breeze.

Well, another means for the ladies wanting GC after college, is filing asylum via female Genital mutilation. I know a ton of east Africa girls especially Kenyans and some few Ghanaians who got their GC after graduating from school through this means.

Guys,
I am new on Nairaland and have been going through the trends although a bit lengthy and difficult to read all. I applied to four fours in Canada for my masters in Economics- University of Ottawa, University of waterloo, Brock University, Wilfrid laurier university and did not get any of the admission. I have very good grades and finished with 4.49 in school and have about 4 year experience in a good company. I am wondering what I could have done wrong and was very pained when I didn't get any of the admission. Can anyone here advise me.
Why don't you apply to schools in the U.S. as well. With a very good GRE scores , SOP, recommendation letter couple with your strong cgpa you can get full funding for your MSC.

I really didn't see any flaws in your interview transcript. You are married, have travel history, your income is good... your profile looks good. Try and reapply, hopefully you find favor with next VO who'll be interviewing you.

Hi everyone. Please o, I want to do my LL.M in the US, do I need to write GRE or any standardized test at all? Do lawyers write GRE too?
Thank you
GRE is not needed... however most schools require applicants to submit an English proficiency exam ( TOEFL/ IELTS ) score if English is not the applicant's native language.

The law school admission test( LSAT ) which is usually the test taken to get admission to law school is also not a requirement since LLM is a masters program and you must have have your first degree in law...

Hi, pls I and my wife applied for US tourist visa few months ago and we were denied. We have travelling experience though, we've visited south Africa n uk together. We used hotel reservation for the us application claiming that we don't know anyone in the us. Now we want to reapply but with a close frnd inviting us for his wedding, hew ready to give us written invitation plus his utility bill but we will still book n hotel cos we don't intend staying in is house during the visit. (he just got his permanent resident card a month after our previous app) that was why we claimed we dunno anybody then cos he had not gotten a status then. 1 Pls can we go ahead with d application using is inivitation? 2 will it not look like we lied in the first application that we don't know anybody in US. Pls I need advice. Thanks
The wedding invitation and utility bill from your friend won't carry much weight in your next interview so I suggest you stick with the hotel reservations...

BTW, why don't you share your last interview transcript so that you can be better adviced by the house.
