Henries: pls,how do i contact the embassy.i ll be leavin in a week, thanks
Emailing the embassy would have been the best but since you are leaving in a weeks time, I'll suggest you call them.

Telephone: 234- 1- 460- 3400.

Email: Lagosiv@state.gov.

Also you can have your spouse call the immigration office in the city that she resides in, to find out the way forward.

IMO, if you have to re- seal the envelope, it has to be done by the embassy.

Be front about it if you decide to re-seal the envelope yourself because they're definitely going to know its been tempered with. All the best.

Henries: thanks for the hint, pls dont u think it ll be better to leave it open n maintain my ignorance than to try n reseal n look as if am tryin to do a cover up.
I'll contact the embassy and explain the situation. They will advice you on what to do. They should be able to re-seal the envelope for a small fee. Good luck.

Henries: dear tzetzefly n gbenga 77,pls n oda gurus on ds forum i wnt an advice on an issue.wen my visa ws given to me @ d DHL office a big brown envelope ws handed to me as well,so i opened it n it ws packed wit all d document submitted by my wife while prosesin my petition bt ws suprise to see do nt open covered wit a white sheet after i v opened it,nw d question is wuld my action hv a negative impact @ d point of entry in US,cos my wife zd i ll nid to drop d parcel for dia immigration ova dia.wuld hv reseal it bt didnt open it properly out of impatience, thanx
Omg!That envelope shouldn't have been open by anyone but the immigration official at the POE. I happened to witness this elderly woman who was almost refused entry at JFK, couple of years ago because her sealed envelope was opened. In her case the envelope was accidently opened by an immigration official at Shiphol airport. This elderly woman spoke little English and couldn't explain to immigration official at JKF why the envelope was opened. I had to go explain to the official what happened at Schiphol but still he was adamant, so I asked to speak to his supervisor and I told him what had happened at Schipol and that its no fault of hers before she was let in. It was quite a hassle.

You just have to be truthful when asked why you opened it. All the best.

Siga: .... Just got off the phone with Keyano College again.... I decided to call the Presidents Office.... spoke to someone there.... she advised I speak with the Registrar (Massa) again...then Massa will forward the request to them for approval.... well... Massa says no... that students need to walk into their school to pay tuition (exactly her word).... I was shocked and sad... seems these guys are not gonna bend.... and guess wat her last option is.... telling me to advise the students to apply to another school in Ontario and transfer once they get to Canada... I told her, these are students that are already on the final phase of their visas and this tuition payment is holding their visas... and they will have to reapply again if they cant pay.... well... she said SORRY.... I dont think I will advise anyone to apply to this school again... the headache is too much....
God bless the United State of America!

kofsy: Good morning house. smiley smileyHappy sunday to you all.

A quick one pls,

What's the cost of living in Washington? I'm eyeing a school in that state and I'm thinking the cost of living and housing will be high. Ofcourse I asked google and I couldn't really lay my hands on any concrete info. Some said the cost of living is average and some said it's on the high side.

So I need a first hand info from an international/Nigerian student. How is the state? Can one live an average life there without headache? smiley smiley

Inperiouxx, gboyega, et al pls assist on this, thanks
I live here in the state of Washington ( Seattle ) and yes, it is an expensive state. Which of the universities are you looking at ( UW, WSU or Seattle U ).
It's a nice state but the only problem is, it rains a lot and there are not too many foreigners here.

tzetzefly: Be calm, you will be informed at the embassy on the procedure to follow and the money to pay. The questions are just basic ones like how you met your wife, when you got married, how many kids you both have, what you do for a living etc....
The petitioner pays all money involve in the process to NVC. The beneficiary just shows up for the interview with the necessary documents. Hope you have your spouse current income tax transcript.

peters ife: Bros temmy tanny, i having dis problem, i won,t be going to states wit my wife cos we were nt married at d time of my interview, i hope travelling in feb alone, my question is that if i stay in america for one yr and six month nd come back to nigeria, will the american embassy grant me visa to go back to america, nd is it possible for me to file for my wife to join me cos my wife is a medical doc she said she prefers practicing in nig, that she can only come to spend holidays in america.
If you intend on being outside the United States for periods in excess of six months, you must obtain a Re-entry Permit, which will authorize you to remain outside the United States for up to two years. You must apply for the Re-entry Permit before you leave the United States. Although the Re-entry Permit remains valid for two (2) years, obtaining a Re-entry Permit does not guarantee that you will be admitted as a returning Resident after a prolonged absence. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer has discretion in whether they will allow you to re-enter the United States. Their determinations are based upon a review of the facts existing at the time of admission and the degree to which ties to the United States can be established. Processing times for Re-entry Permits can sometimes be lengthy. Therefore, it is prudent that your travel needs be carefully planned with this in mind.

It is very rare for new immigrants to come to the state and land their dream job. You will have to start some where may be not in international relations. Have your transcript from grad school evaluated by one of the agencies ( WES or Josef Silny ). You may have to freshen your credential here. You can go chase your dream job after that.
Life in Bmore is fun, lots of naija people over there. All the best.

chyk2020: : Thanks so much@babbs45- is just that our host want to use us as dependent, just want to know if that is ok, wont that have a negative effect on us in future, please response
I am assuming you are married with kids. It is sad you host is trying to take this route with you because he is going to claim your kids as his dependents. Usually the child tax credit and the child and dependent tax credit provide great relief for parents. You get back from the government money you spent on your kids, like day care, school supplies etc. So your host is going to deny you as a parent this money you are suppose to get, he might give you a cut of the money. It is not going to be illegal, cos you're going to consent to it. He will need the kids ssn to claim them as dependent.
There is no much you can do since he is hosting you guys. Stop it as soon as you become independent. People do this all the time and get away with it, but when you're randomly selected to be audited by the IRS, and you're not able to provide receipts of all expenses of your dependent that is when you trouble starts. All the best.

chyk2020: Hi nairalanders, i greet u all and i want to say happy new year to everyone. to those preparing for interview i wish you all success IJN. just want to know what this $165 USCIS fee is all about. on the issue of Citizenship, do we have to fill any thing online in the states as we enter United states or wait till we complete 5years before the citizenship processing. Please 1 last question, do anybody know anything about Tax application(W-2 form), where u will include your dependant and money will be given to you. is ok for someone to be added as dependant? wont it have negative effect on the person at the long run? Thanks all for ur contribution. hope to get the answers on time. I believe all my newly immigrant to states are enjoying this Cold with me. lol.
The $165, is a new fee that you will have to pay to uscis to have your GC process, starting feb 1st. If you already have your visa, then it doesn't apply to you.
You don't do anything online with regards to the citizenship. You just have to wait for five years and make sure you meet all the necessay requirements ( continous residence, physical presence, no criminal record etc )
The W2 is a form your employer send to you and the IRS. It show your annual income and the amount of taxes withheld from your paycheck. The more dependents you claim on your w2 the less taxes are withheld. So somebody with no dependent will pay more in taxes.
Why add a dependent when you don't have one. It is well know that people claim dependents on their yearly income tax just to get more money back from the federal government. IRS is one of the government agencies you don't want to mess with. You don't have a problem if the number of people you claim on your income tax are truly your dependents. Prost.

Spoondar: I would want to go for a nursing school and i hear BSN is the best level to acquire in nursing. How long does one take to do this coarse? And will you compare it with IT in terms of money and getting jobs because am an IT profession but not by choice.
Yes, BSN is the best level to acquire in nursing. It is a four year program. You use the first two years for your prerequisites and the last two years for the real nursing course. I think the best route is to start with CNA whiles you take your prerequisites at a community college and then transfer as junior to a university to finish your program. This route is also cheaper than going straight to the university. The demand for RN is very high and pay very good.

adzovia: i have no idea but i will advice anyone coming to have more then $1500 on them when you come you enroll in a course called CNA that is community nursing assistance. it does not take 3 weeks and job is guaranteed the pay is good. you can be doing that whiles applying for other jobs or furthering your education
And also, the CNA program is a very good start for those aspiring to be registered nurse.

adzovia: i thought we had to wait at home for the card since we have filled the ssn on the ds forms. i was actually given a print out by the embassy to wait for 2 to 3 weeks after arrival in the states for the ssn. that there was no need to go to their office
My mum got her Social security card in the mail within two week of her arrival. She didn't have to go to the social security office. It might vary from state to state, I live in the state of Washington.

lislabo: US Congress passes bill to cancel diversity visa (DV Lottery)
http://www.awrambatimes.com/?p=4969
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/nov/30/house-passes-bill-cancel-diversity-visa-lottery/
There is no need to worry about this bill. This bill passing the house doesn't mean it is the law of the land. The ONLY way the Republican Party can get rid of the the dv lottery is when they control all the three branches of government. For now they only control the house. This bill will make its way to the senate which is control by the democrats, I doubt whether its even going to make its way to the floor to be discuss left alone vote on. Even if both congress pass it, the president who is trying to push through a comprehensive immigration reform and who is strongly against this bill, will definitely veto it. The republican will need 2/3 majority in both house to override the veto.
You see how complex this is? They have tried numerous time to get rid of the dv but they all failed. The same faith awaits this bill.

That is why it is very important that has you guys become eligible for citizenship, don't put it of. Together we can teach this republicans a lesson. Hate them we passion.

brightmon: See your mouth, that republican controled stated that you guys cant deliver to Obama.
Well, it's been predicted that come the next election cycle ( 2016 ) Texas is going to move from been a red state to a battleground state. Can't for that to happen cos that will be the demise of the Republican Party.

Yes, you can. There are all kinds of entry level jobs( retail, security etc ) that you can start with whiles you get settle in. I will encourage you to enroll in college or trade school as soon as you get settle in. You can be working while you go to school, it's not easy but it is doable. You have all kinds of programs available to you when you enroll like federal work study, financial aid etc and if you have to take a student loan so be it, I think it will be worth it. I great thing about this country is, I believe the playing field is level and if you have the necessary qualifications you will get a very good paying job and also so many opportunities will be open to you.
