NYSCNew Book Alert- Mbok Don't Kopa Me By Badiru Kehinde by Badirukehinde(op): 8:31pm On Mar 15, 2018
NEW BOOK ALERT!!!

I've always wanted to capture all the moments and soon to be memories on the pages of a memoir.

Brenda Nwafor particularly had stated: "Oga, by now you should be writing a memoir" This was after she saw my poem on Mammy Market.

I've also had people slide in my DM saying; "won't you write all the experiences of NYSC for us to read?"

Yea, I thought I could write what the next generation(s) would forever benefit from.

-------------------------------------------------
What does it mean to be an Akwa Ibom Kopa? (Corps member in Akwa Ibom)
I wasn't posted to a school, government Office, organization and what have you, so where, and why?
What if you discover that NYSC is beyond wearing a Khaki, going for CDS, taking pictures and waiting for a monthly pea-nut?

Absolutely, this is 1 year some will either forever regret or forever adore.

You will find these in a memoir. Things you didn't know about Akwa Ibom are there in also. And for those who dream of serving there, this is a must read.

Prepare your mind as I capture the momental chapters in words and pictures...

Share the good news to/with your contact list and friends if you love and support my craft.

NB: The Book will be available for free on Okadabooks, Createspace, Booklify and Amazon this month

Wait For This... Leggo!

NYSCCorps Member Carries Out Personal CDS Project: Trains Over 150 Young Students... by Badirukehinde(op): 8:21pm On Mar 15, 2018
CORPS MEMBER CARRIES OUT PERSONAL CDS PROJECT: TRAINS OVER 150 YOUNG STUDENTS IN UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE TO BECOME CREATIVE WRITERS

For many corps members’, having a CDS Project towards the end of their service year is the height of NYSC and most times, an impossible feat. However, for some others, it is not necessary as long as their alawee keeps coming in. It suffices to say that having a Personal CDS comes with much hurdles and challenges, particularly when it is one that deviates from the norm of providing bore holes, building class rooms and providing desks.

A corps member, Badiru Kehinde with AK/17A/0918 decided to see a Personal CDS from another angle. The corps member with the Akwa Ibom Editorial CDS group has decided to do something different. In his words: When I left a place I call home in April, 2017, I had no main picture of where I was going to, how it looked like and the tales that awaited me, I took my life with all care. Like one writer said, you must face life like a mirror and keep burning like flames of fire.

I spent the night at Ikot-Ekpene and from there the story to life, impact and realities of being a youth corps member was birthed.
More than anything, writing and seeing budding writers become better have been one of my greatest passion. More so, in the pursuit of impact on the young minds and with the desire to promoting Nigeria's Literature, I knew I had to do this. Do what?
All plans had been thought out before the beginning of the scheme. I had hoped to have a Personal CDS Project (which some people whispered to me as impossible). In proving every impossibility wrong, I walked the streets of Uyo, Akwa Ibom under the rain and in the sun (Coincidentally, that's also a line from the NYSC Anthem). I also jumped in and out, from different taxis and Keke marwas in search of sponsors and literary enthusiasts.

Many of these tales were filled with heart breaks. Although, there were no pieces. I had some people look in disdain without believing in the proposal I had in hand. Interestingly, I had written and reprinted the proposal about 5 times before it was finally approved by the NYSC. That could have kept me down but I kept on with it.

What had kept me inspired were these tough times. One of such was when I wrote a poem in dedication to the state's 30th anniversary. I had hoped I would perform it but I couldn't due to one reason or the other.

I therefore knew a lot had to be done. I needed to challenge the stereotypes in the community and metropolis I was. I therefore adopted a Personal CDS Project named "Write Now" which successfully:
1. Trained over 150 young students on the art of Writing.
2. Empowered them with different writing materials from books to pen.
3. Provided close-watch writing workshops, feed-backs as well as virtual writing aids/prompts.
4. Helped the students discover and nurture their writing prowess.
5. Revealed the various genres and elements of writing to the students.
6. Published an anthology as written by the students themselves.
Many of the poems focused on themes such as feminism, the girl-child, education, politics, motherhood, justice, corruption, leadership and lots more.
All these would not have been possible without the wonderful team of writers, poets, photographers and lovers of art that supported me in one way or the other. For many of these people, NYSC made our friendship a real time friendship and a journey in words, rhyme and rhythm.
I will save you the stories; you can read a lot more in my full length memoir on the service year.

LiteratureAll This We Ask (poem) By Badiru Kehinde by Badirukehinde(op):
Dear Lord,

Help Us to love your Word
more than our Phones.
And if we won't,
Let the charger get spoilt.

If Glo makes us use our tithe
to do one month subscription,
let all their mast go to sleep.

We pray that PHCN will
become useless
more than ever,
so that we will go to your house.

Help us to learn to pray,
even when we travel to UK
in our dreams
And not only when
the village people are at work.

Give every Landlord sense,
to teach their tenants to be landlords too.

Let every song
the political choristers in Abuja sing
become cacophonous to your ear.

And help us to love
our president like we love Telemundo and Bet9ja.
Curse every looter
to die in the Pilgrimage of shooters.

Teach us to trust tomorrow,
and not just the today in our mouths.

Let our fathers receive sense to
lead their families responsibly
and let our mothers know how to
cook good meals, care for their husbands
and grow in strength
and not be ordinary
ideological feminists.

Teach the young ones in love
that it is a borderless road.

Dear Lord, help our universities
to buy new books into our libraries.
Let us know even quickly, the difference
between education, a degree and common sense.

Let it be known that,
secrets are time-bombs,
trusts too are deceptive pills,
Staying in-between is a charade more so...

All this we ask through
all this we ask.
Amen!!!

Poems For ReviewMad Men And A Fictional Country-badiru Kehinde by Badirukehinde(op):
MAD MEN AND A FICTIONAL COUNTRY

Welcome to Nigeria;
The fictional country.

You are mad if you
don't know that
Nigeria is a fiction!

I'm mad, and I know it is
a fiction.
I'm not mad because of them
I'm mad because
you thought your dreams
are achievable only
with their long spoons.
I'm also mad,
not because I'v not eaten
but because the larger
hungry planet of masses
will vote again
for change.

I'm mad because
we will not change
our diapers
and sing new songs.
I'm mad because
these words are too
light for the sane,
they
will
never
understand
a bit...

Only the mad can speak out!

LiteratureRe: Authors On Okadabooks Drop Your Book Info Here by Badirukehinde(m):
I Know Why Your Mother Cries is Badiru's first collection of poetry after years of writing for the social media space.

In his words, "This book contains poems I wrote from my heart,it's my first published work. I sat reading some pages days ago with friends and they could almost cry, yet smiling".

I Know Why Your Mother Cries (IKWYMC) is not just a collection of poetry but a manifestation of the tears mothers and women have cried and still cry. The collection is engaging, utilizes humour, collective imagery and creates a special eureka feeling which every one no matter class, age or gender can relate with. It addresses almost every motifs of life.

Every one born of a woman should find pleasure in this beauty. And the beauty lies in the tears your mother sheds... "But with your woman's tears, the world becomes complete" (Stanza 15)

IKWYMC is a poetry about love, feminism, motherhood, failed promises, poverty, corruption, will, injustice, leadership, hope and the dream we collectively share. Christianity EtcGod Is There In The Mirror by Badirukehinde(op): 11:49pm On Jan 26, 2018
I was at a barbing salon yesternight to have my hair cut. Mintues before I was attended to, I saw a young couple walk in with their son (he should be about 3 years old). Obviosuly, the mother wouldn't want to have her hair cut, she only came with her son and hubby.

The little boy was ushered to the arm-chair by the barber. He was little and collapsed in the chair which was about 6 times bigger than he was (how small). He stared at the clipper intermittently not knowing if he should cry or laugh. The barber, like the ones I had experienced growing with gave the boy a rhetoric smile as he held his head to start.

At the sound of the clipper, the boy began to cry. What amazed me was this: as he prepared to cry, he looked forward at the wide sized mirror before him. He looked again and saw his father's face filled with a big smile, so, he stopped crying. As the clipper sound rose to a crescendo, the sound of his cry would almost rise too, but seeing his father smiled from behind as reflected in the mirror gave him the relief he ever wanted.

This is a lesson to us. In every situation, God is there in the mirror, reflecting but we can't see him because our heads are down and our eyes are in tears. Whatever, the case, God is in it. He is there to comfort you. He just wants you to trust HIS bold smile from behind, also trusting him that every situation trying to cut you out of life will be handled by Him. Trust Him.

Okay, I'm out...

Oga, the boy is over qualified oo. I can’t get a degree from buckingham and then use it to serve a dirty organization like the Nigeria Police Force. This boy joined the police at the prodding of his father and other northern hawks to be the Inspector General of Police in the near future. It is all part of the Northern hegemony.

The boy is on a mission.

15 Nuggets You Need in November

1. Reshuffle Your Life & Priorities.

2. Don't let your life depend on people.

3. Trust the plan and stay committed to the goals.

4. Be focused and no matter what don't trade your standards for iranu. This is the youruba word for 'rubbish'.

5. Treat people with respect, treat those who don't need respect with the other side.

6. Don't sacrifice too much of your life for people, sometimes, their hapiness is all that matters to them, not yours.

6. Think before you smile to the wrong person.

7. No matter how rough, keep moving, there's al-ways- a way. (All ways)

8. Stay real or your fakeness will soon become expired.

9. Don't wait for opportunities, take them.

10. Don't care, sometimes, just watch, learn & be strong not to repeat the same mistake twice.

11. On the altar of kindness, dreams have been taken away, on the altar of peace, war had been brought upon people. Be smart and watch who you are kind to.

12. Stay where you want to be, don't wish for other people's lives.

13. Don't be stupid when you need to be savage.

14. Trust God and yourself.

15. No matter what, don't lose HOPE...

Your eye ball, the three men at Ojota will.

This is Lagos,
Here, your dreams are painted
On the canvas of yellow & black.
Here, traffic is like taking attendance
at the gate of heaven
You must confirm your pocket
As you walk from bustop to bustop...

In my Lagos,
Madness is a choice,
Amebo is integrity,
Freedom is in chains,
Fashion is oxgyen,
Love is a sham,
Business is business.
If you don't mind your business,
You will be taught the lesson of Eko Akete!

This is my Lagos!
But there is more to it...
In my Lagos!

LiteratureGrayscale Photo Filters Among Contemporary Social Media Posters by Badirukehinde(op): 12:11am On Sep 27, 2017
(A Must Read)

“A DIGITAL REPLAY OF HISTORY: THE OBSESSION WITH GRAYSCALE PHOTO FILTERS AMONG CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL MEDIA POSTERS”

‘Alade your neck is bent’ the only photographer in the village said as he faced the group of high school leavers who had gotten a scholarship to study at the University College, Ibadan, now University of Ibadan. That was the last photograph they had together as a group. The photographer was Afolayan; he was the only photographer in the rural area, somewhere in Ekiti, South West Nigeria.

Hey! Before you get lost in this, my concern is neither the group nor the photographer but the uniqueness of the camera of the time. Then, there were no higher definition digital cameras like we have now. Many had nicked named Afolayan 'gray scale'. That time had passed but then, photography and pictures was a luxury only elitist could afford. Some of those who were fortunate to be loyal to officials of the colonial government in the pre-independence era were given cameras amongst other things as a form of reward for their loyalty.

Gray scale (greyscale) then was the quality of pictures in vogue, hence, was appreciated. I will not bore you with the history of greyscale and photography but I’m sure to mention some things which will aid this short paper. The digital camera has come a long way, the same way photography has. Cnet.com mentioned that the camera generally recognized as the first digital still snapper was a prototype (US patent 4, 131, 919) developed by Eastman Kodak engineer Steven Sasson in 1975. He cobbled together some Motorola parts with a Kodak movie-camera lens and some newly invented Fairchild CCD electronic sensors. The photographs that came out of this were mostly in black and white (gray scale). However, there was a rapid shape-shift in the latter part of the 20th century as the influx of digital cameras became really tremendous. Following this or consequential with this was the popularity of the web which gained ground in that same period with the www.

Social networking had provided an avenue for groups to come together virtually while maintaining newer identities or creating newer ones. In such digital communities/folk groups, there were needs to fill up profile pictures (avatars) as well as upload pictures seamlessly. These upload first appeared in coloured forms which proved modernity to truly be modern. However, the emergent 21st century had changed the entire story. There is a case of digital replay of history among the contemporary social media posters with the quest for Grayscale. The history replayed is that of the early era when pictures were supposedly in 'black' and 'white'. Some critics, like I read in an article and review online had blamed this retrogressive shift on the social media platforms e.g. Instagram and Facebook particularly which make available filters for turning pictures to gray scale textures.

Yet, many youths seem to be satisfied with gray scale for one reason or the other; one, the desire to remain indigenous or two, a case of retelling history. Really, it has been hard to differentiate between historical pictures and contemporary pictures as they are all wrapped up in the same feature. Who knows? There may be a problem for the next generation to gather research materials as there may be a problem having to differenciate between their parent's past and of their great grand parents.

And that take us back to our story, Afolayan’s grand daughter is one of those who supposedly found interest in the choice of gray scale over normal filters. Would her granny be happy? Well, you should know, I'm almost a victim, my last uploaded picture was in gray scale. Okay bye, I'm out...

CLEARANCE DRAMA: ASPIRING UNDERGRADUATE WEARS SUIT AS HE SELLS FRIED MEAT TO CORPS MEMBERS

It was not a day like other days for most corps members. Thursday 3rd August, been the last day of the clearance for most corps members for the month of August was a busy day with everyone almost joining one queue or the other where their respective banks fell into.

So many activities occupied the moment; platoon mates who had missed themselves could be seen hugging each other, some making photocopies, some arguing over who was in a queue and who was not. However, despite all of these, one person had taken the spotlight. This was Chukwuemeka. Every corps member looked in amazement at this young man who wore a suit with a well tucked in white starched shirt. His shoes were well polished that drops of water could fall on it yet it would splash away. One could literarily see oneself in it.

Emeka was dressed like this and was holding a white transparent bucket over his shoulder as supported by his right arm. In the bucket were grilled meats held together by toothpicks and well arranged in rows. Like most graduates would think, some had looked at the young man in disdain and for some in shock why he was dressed like that and yet selling meat. I was talking away when this young man caught my attention. I thought to myself; this is yet an exciting story that could make a feature sponsored in our monthly editorial, Ibom Kopa of which I was part of as my CDS.

I had a very short interview with the young man to the shock of other corps members who wondered what a fellow corps member was doing with a meat seller or who probably didn’t know I was part of the Ibom Kopa Editorial crew; below are the excerpts from the interview;

Kenny: Can I meet you? I mean what’s your name?

Emeka: My name is Chuwu Ebuka Obi, I am from Anambra state.

Kenny: Very good. So what brought you to Akwa Ibom state?

Ebuka: I’ve been here for some time since I concluded my secondary education in 2008. I live with my older brother. Trade brought me here.

Kenny: That would take us to my next question. If I’m right, do you mean the trade in fried meat *points to plastic*?

Ebuka: yes! Something like this, I’ve been doing this for some time now, since August last year to support myself. There is no support for me to go to school…

Kenny: That is not too good to hear but then, there is hope. I was inspired to come speak to you as you took the attention of all corps members by dressing in a suit and tie to sell your grilled meat. What inspired that dressing?

Ebuka: *shy* well, yes, I’ve been dressing like this for long now because I am a pastor too and as a business man, I believe in packaging.

Kenny: so that means you love the way you dress and no one compels you to?

Ebuka: yes, I love it. I’m trying to make a living.

Kenny: On an average, how much do you make in a day and how much meat do you prepare?

Ebuka: ehn ehn, sometimes I make a profit close to #2000 but I make meat of over #15,000 daily.

Kenny: So why did you decide to target corps members as your customers (market target)?

Ebuka: Yes, I just feel I will sell more if I come here, nothing more.

Kenny: Very good. Your story is inspiring. I love your spirit of entrepreneurship. Despite selling this thing in a plastic, you didn’t feel shy to still dress responsibly. You have all eyes of corps members on you.

Ebuka: I don’t feel shy because I know I won’t do this forever.

Kenny: So do you have plans to go back to school?

Ebuka: Yes, like I said, I left secondary school since 2008, I once applied for an admission into Anambra State University and Imo State University to study Engineering but I wasn’t selected.

Kenny: Well, I’m sorry about that. You can still get to the university and pursue your dreams of becoming a trained engineer. I still see you becoming that. Just stay focused on your dreams, keep pushing and try to do that next year. We look forward to seeing how we will get required support for you. I will from today keep in touch with you so as to help out in any way I can okay.

Ebuka: *shocked* wow, thank you sir, I’m grateful

Kenny: It’s okay. I am just like you. We all have a story to tell and I have decided to tell yours. Take care

NB: Ebuka has decided not to engage in robbery or drugs like some other youths who are yet to get a job or admission into a higher institution. He prepares himself as an entrepreneur, yet with great hope that he will someday become an engineer.
