nedu2u, need to see a gastroenterologist. It might be diet related, could be irritable bowel or some inflammatory cause. Look at the top and bottom with biopsies will give you the answer. Check your diet first before spending money

adeoyee, there is no problem with you marrying someone of a different blood group. It only matters between mother and potential baby. Usually not the first one. All to do with antigens and antibodies.

Jaydude, regarding the bitter taste in the mouth, what were you treated for. Some medicines make your mouth feel like you are tasting mercury. Antibiotics are notorious for that.
Regarding your premenstrual symptoms, have your haemoglobin checked. If need be try and take iron and vitamins regularly. Most women have certain painkillers that help their backache. Some take anti inflammatory tablets, others take something like paracetamol/codeine. You have to find what suits you

Organmii, cancer topics will be too vast to cover. What type of cancer did your friend's mother die from. Might make it easier to explain that one. You can have benign and malignant tumours. Malignant ones are the ones that spread.  Causes are called carcinogens. They include things like cigarette, plastics etc. Some tumours have genetic predisposition. Effects depend on where the cancer is. A benign tumour in the brain will cause pressure effect in the brain. Cancer of the ovary might not cause any effect until its too late. Prevention includes avoiding possible carcinogens, hence smoking ban to avoid passive inhalation. People go for screening to try and pick up early cancers. Like I said it is such a vast topic, I cannot cover it at all.

Naijaking, I am happy for you to give advice as necessary. If however you are encountering problems with getting your advice on, we need to know why. I am taking a bit of a back seat mainly because I feel you give the perfect advice. No point in getting at Dominique as she has nothing to do with it. Does Seun have a view on this!!!
Health / Re: *~ Balogun Voted The Health Section Poster Of The Year *~ Congratulations! by Balogun(m): 9:41am On Jan 03, 2010
Not too sure about this voting thing. All I can say like I have mentioned in the past, I enjoy reading the advice and replies by naijaking and kathy. We all realised what great contributions kathy made when she was away. I think all three of us seem to have lasted the course. Its my big 50 this April and invitations to Edinburgh will be in the mail!!! We need to make New York happen this year. I am sure it will be a giggle. Happy New Year to you guys. Lets keep advicing
Health / Re: Vasectomy: Would You Have It? by Balogun(m): 11:32pm On Dec 26, 2009
master 1, looks like you have lifted your vasectomy information from some internet site. I have performed quite a lot of this operations in my training period. Vasectomy is an operation that is usually done under local anaesthetic. Cutting throught the vas and folding it back so the ends don't rejoin making it a failed operation. Probably something nigerians should think about as its the quality of the children you produce that matters, not the quantity. With the current population explosion, maybe Nigeria should adopt the policy in India many years ago where you reward men who undergo vasectomies. Reversal of vasectomy is more complicated than the vasectomy itself and does have a limited success due to antibody production. The pill has its own side effects and most men after having their children are happy to undergo vasectomies in the West to stop their partners/wives from needing to take tablets, have injections or have the coil inserted.

Now now Dominique, a bit of raw nerve has been touched here!! As I said in the past we managed well without lost replies before advent of moderator. We are just a bit concerned that with the moderator present a lot of replies have gone missing. We give our time here for free and I despite my long experience in medicine enjoy reading replies by kathyekiti and naijaking. I get frustrated when I see last post belonging to naijaking and find the post is not on the thread. Our time is precious and we donate it for free. All you have to see is what chaos ensured with absence of kathyekiti for few months. We will give our replies as always and you sort out the IT bit to avoid frustration on all sides. The people asking our advice, us doctors and people wanting to read the advice

Samaru I need you to be clear. What xray was done. what symptoms did you go and see the doctor for. the doses you are talking about, how many milligrams daily or twice daily. For asthma and all exacerbations of chronic lung diseases(that is when it gets worse) I tend to give high dose steroids for a short time 5 days and then stop. Are you on long term steroids

richardtee, your back sounds like musculoligamentous problems. Xrays as you have found out contributes nothing to none trauma back pain. See a physiotherapist to give you exercises to do. If it still does not improve an MRI of your back will show what exactly the problem is

Thanks for the observation of the picture on the wall. It is by an artist called Ken Symonds who is based in Cornwall, England. He actually drew a lot of front covers for African text books when he lived in Africa.

Now your problem. From what I have read on the other site, it seems as though your cycle seems regular and normal. I think your gynaecologists are right. You need to be patient. However I see this is causing you distress. Important to start with simple investigations before clomid. Is your partner had a sperm check. That might be an easy beginning. Mid cycle is usually day 14, which means you are most fertile in the few days before and after

It does what it says on the tin!! Doctors in the house. Ask away your advice.

Dewoy and others that give blood results or other results, its important to clarify what units come after the number like mmol/L mg/100ml or whatever is at the end of the number. We can then work out whether you are within the normal limits of the result you are giving us

Ankeade, Naijaking is spot on with the advice regarding sleep positions in pregnancy
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 11:00am On Oct 28, 2009

meta4, your wife has postural hypotension. She needs to take her time getting up from lying or sitting position. Simple blood pressure measurements in this positions will confirm that.

Titilaelae, is there any possibility that you have introduced something new to your baby. Change of washing powder, animals in the house. Catarrh and cough could be signs he is reacting to something. Check around you first that there is no new allergen around
Health / Re: Doctor In The House:Obstetrics And Gynecology by Balogun(m): 8:42pm On Oct 21, 2009
Ankeade, ovulation is the time of the month usually mid cycle when the egg is released from the ovary. Usually happens around day 14. You are meant to be most fertile around these days. You might have a sticky vaginal discharge at this time. Occasionally get some pain at this time (Mittelschmerz).
Fibroids are in part asymptomatic. Symptoms usually are heavy periods, pain. More common in black women

I think that covers most that need advice. The other queries have been answered accurately by others on this thread.

The absence of Dr Kathy has made me realise how much she does on this thread and I hope everyone here appreciates it. We give our precious free time to answer queries without reward except for the thanks we get
Health / Re: Doctor In The House:Obstetrics And Gynecology by Balogun(m): 9:20pm On Oct 16, 2009
Madambini, do you have any discharges coming through. A vaginal swab might help.
Cutesharon, misoprostol and mifepristone are used for induction of abortion. All these you can find easily on the internet.
MadamL, do you have any history of fibroids. It is not unusual to have painful breasts just before your periods
Anamelechi, why is your fallopian tube blocked. Normally I would say it takes about 2 years sometimes to get timing of conception right. See your gynaecologist with regards to the blocked tube
mamaa, not unusual to be producing milk after you have weaned the little one off the breast

Ladies and some gentlemen that post here. Just noticed Dr Kathy was last active on 29th August. Might take some time but will try and go through as much of the post over the weekend and give appropriate advice. Be patient!!
