Chiefs, sorry to hear about your father. Possibility of diabetic ketoacidosis. Is your father normally diabetic? Sometimes these cases are complicated with cerebral problems like swelling. You need to speak to your doctors who are treating his acute problems. They are there and in better position to explain the prognosis. Good luck |

Megacid is a straight forward antacid. Used mainly in Nigeria. In Britain Gaviscon is the main antacid used. Most of these contain aluminium or magnesium compounds. Main medications used now are ppi (proton pump inhibitors). They all end in __prazole. Lansoprazole, omeprazole, esomeprazole |

Joseph6, without wanting to sound rude what is privates fish!!! Hernia depends on where you have it. Hiatus hernia might give you heartburn/indigestion, hernia in the groin could be whats called femoral or inguinal. You need to be more specific about your queries. Teetee2, your symptoms are not very specific. You do have a high diastolic pressure however. Who checked your blood pressure for you Toon131, old chestnut of premature ejaculation. You need an understanding partner that is happy to work it out with you. 90% is psychological. If you love what you are doing and who you are doing it with, its easy to work out. No pills or cream will make it better. Some people recommend anaesthetic cream to decrease the feeling on your penis. Sildenafil only gives you an erection and does not stop premature ejaculation |

Back pain. Investigations for back pain I feel is most important thing. If you know the cause of back pain, thats most of the problem. Treat what is found on investigations |

Ebiye55, pimples sometimes have an underlying infection. Try not to scratch or burst it. Flucloxacillin is best if you have infection there. Assuming you are not allergic to penicillin. Gsawlah, I will refer you to kathyekiti's site. Doctor in the house:obgyn. She is best to give you advice about this. Good luck |

Bracelet, warts are caused by viruses. Only topical treatment work for the treatment. it is important that the wart that is treated is the mother wart, otherwise it wont work. Cryotherapy (freezing) treatment is quite good but important to shave the head of the wart and leave the body to develop antibodies to kill the rest. Salicylic acid based ointment or gel is also good. If its genital warts you are talking about see a Genitourinary medicine doctor. Both you and possible partners will need treatment |

Troynow, depends on where you want to pratice your medicine or surgery. Countries that have all facilities it is easy to practice what your heart desires. In countries where facilities are limited you have to go for what would benefit the masses best! In Nigeria people are dying from lack of basic medication, neurosurgery and cardiac or vascular surgery will only benefit the sick elite. I practice in Scotland. Means I can go for what I find most interesting. In my case I am in Emergency Medicine. Benefits the masses |

jaydude, swelling around the anus can be one of many things. It could be a pile (haemorrhoid), some anal tags. warts. Suggest your personal physician examines you for that. Aminophylline is usually used as second line of treatment in asthma. Also used when someone comes in with acute asthma not settled with nebulized salbutamol, intravenously. Better to see a Respiratory physician than depend on what the chemist son uses!!! |
Education / Re: Secrets Of First Class Students? by Balogun(m): 8:27am On Aug 28, 2008 |
okija_juju is about the only one making sense here. There is no god just human inventions. all students are first class students. you just need to find out what you are good at. a first class mechanic will not be a first class doctor and vice versa. all you lot that think you are first class, remember everybody is first class at something!!!!! |

teetee2, it is easy to diagnose people as being asthmatic and continually give them, salbutamol(ventolin) and prednisolone each time they claim to have exacerbation of their symptoms. In view of all that has happened to you, once you have excluded the diagnosis of brittle asthma, you might want to learn some breathing exercises. That will also stop your chest hurting. You need someone with interest in this to examine you properly when you have one of your attacks. They need to differentiate between hyperventilating and asthma attack |

Strider see above for your answer. HCH3COO, I wouldn't advice re-spraining it. You will do more damage. Physiotherapy might be your course of action. Ligaments when not treated properly heal by scarring and not by forming new ligament tissue. If you re-sprain it you might end up with double the problem you have. Yemivctor, assuming you have no diagnosable problem like an insulinoma, stick to frequent small meals. Protein and fat breakdown usually requires glucose. So too much of these might lower your blood sugar level. See nutritionist to give you adequate diet |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 11:49am On Jul 22, 2008 |
HCH3COO. Not a lot to do with your ankle at this stage. From your symptoms, you seem to have minimal functional problems. Yemivictor, what is the cause of your low blood sugar!! Ndakingo. Are you sure your first test for hep b virus wasn't a false positive test. Do the lab that did the original test still have a sample of your serum to get it retested by some other lab. Do you have jaundice. Would like to see the result of your liver function tests Kikik, go on the obgyn thread with kathyekiti. She should be able to advice you. She does visiting consultation to this thread!! Strider, unless there is a problem with the blood supply to your testis unlike to shrink. See urologist |

Gamine, it is not unusual to have 2 periods in a month. kathyekiti on obgyn thread of Doctor in the House should be able to answer the more intricate questions. HCH3COO, ligaments are notorious for have poor blood supply and good nerve supply. Means they dont heal well and they hurt. Early physiotherapy is my usual advice for ankle sprains. Two and a half years down the line and negative MRI does cause some confusion. Too late for RICE. What symtoms are you getting |

Marami, I am sure kathyekiti is the one to answer your question. She would like to know your age and what type of contraception you use. Need to know the contents of your over the counter medicine yemivictor. Some OTC medicines have effect on metabolism of some drugs |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 11:21pm On Jun 24, 2008 |
Reindeer thanks for your advice. It would be useful to read the full text of the advice given!!! You can find names of most drugs on the internet without medical input |

There is difference now in the symptoms you have given now insight. There seems to be incontinence added to the urgency. As naijaking has intimated, your dad needs to see a urologist for examination that might include cystoscopy. If urinary tract infection has been exclude, unusual in men, your dad might benefit from oxybutynin. This is all subject to urological diagnosis!!! |

Low sperm count does not preclude someone fathering a child. However it could be cause for infertility. The standard advice given is to avoid tight pants and warm areas near the man's Instruments. Truck drivers were known to be an infertile lot!! Never sure if anyone ever did a proper study on that. |

pheesayor. I think naijaking is more or less your personal physician here. He knows more about you than the rest of us. When he comes on next he will attend to your query. mishooo, have you heard the statement about never putting anything smaller than your elbow in your ear!! Chances are that you have perforated your eardrum with a sharp implement in your ear. See your own doctor to confirm this. He might want to treat you with antibiotics. Generally this settles with conservative management |

Staphylococcus is bacteria that is unusual to find in urine. It is a gram positive bacteria. Usually get it in skin infections. Mid cycle pain is called Mittelschmerz. It is not uncommon. Kathyekiti might be able to explain that better |

Adeturanyo. Your skin itch could easily be simple heat rash or parasites. Stop scratching to start with as you will end up opening skin and cause skin infection!! See your doctor regarding the itch, it could be scabies The problem under your armpit is most likely an infected sebaceous cyst |

Naijamedic, Naijaking and Kathyekiti, I am glad you are keeping this thread going. I have a few days with no admin work or teaching medical students. Should give me chance to contribute again to answering medical questions. For those of you in UK interested in doing part B and C of the MCEM exam, I am planning on writing a question and answer book for the exam. Contributions in way of remembered past questions from the exam would help. Happy to e mail my first 20 questions to nairaland doctors. You need to be registered with GMC for me to send this to you. Dr Balogun is back!! |
