For all you budding medical students and doctors in Nigeria, they have changed the rules about working in the UK. It is more difficult. They have to appoint a local graduate or someone from the European Union before they can consider anyone else for training posts. You might find yourselves frustrated with applying for jobs in the UK unless you know someone high up! For those wanting to go abroad, America might be the best options. Try sitting your examinations when medical school stuff is still fresh in your head

In some circumstances there might be a pathological problem in the urinary tract. Some people have dilated kidneys, some have whats called reflux, it could be little pockets in the bladder called diverticulum. If a man or boy gets recurrent UTIs the urinary tract needs investigating either with an intravenous urogram IVU or CT Scan version of it. Ultrasound scan of the urinary tract is done sometimes

Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 1:55pm On Apr 27, 2006
UTIs are caused mainly by bacteria. More common in women and could affect any part of the urinary system. That is kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra and prostate in the male. Poor hygiene like wiping yourself back to front,so introducing bacteria from the anal region to urogenital area(vagina and urethral opening). Not drinking enough fluids, people with illness that run down their immune system. For most people its hygiene and lack of fluids. Dont confuse this with cystitis

Religion / Re: Christians: Can a Non-Christian Go to Heaven? by Balogun(m): 12:29pm On Apr 19, 2006
You still haven't told me whether you have done good for your fellow man Kimba. All you are doing is preaching to me! As you can see I am happy for christians to say they will go to heaven, if there is such a place. What I object to is them saying all other religion believers will not go there. That is so unchristian and selfish. I would have thought all christians would be happy for everybody to be in heaven irrespective of their religion or belief. Next thing it will be catholics only that go to heaven or is evangelists or is it baptists, maybe the protestants!! Last post on this subject from me!!!
Religion / Re: Christians: Can a Non-Christian Go to Heaven? by Balogun(m): 9:29am On Apr 18, 2006
There we go again. All you christians think you are right and everybody is wrong. There is no point in ever arguing with you lot because you have tunnel vision. You need to have an open mind about things and not believe what everybody has told you. Kimba you need to go out more and do some good to your fellow man. Not preach to them!!
Religion / Re: Christians: Can a Non-Christian Go to Heaven? by Balogun(m): 11:49am On Apr 17, 2006
Personally I feel africans especially Nigerians dwell too much on religion and forget about being good to each other. No matter how much you quote stuff from the bible, dont forget it was written by man, editted by man and done solely for the purpose of morality. Before the white man brought chritianity to Nigeria, are you lot saying all our forefathers are dwelling in a different afterlife. I think not. Guys wake up to being good to each other in this life. If there is a heaven!!!!! All good people will go there irrespective of whether christians or not and the argument shall continue
Religion / Re: Christians: Can a Non-Christian Go to Heaven? by Balogun(m): 2:32pm On Apr 14, 2006
I haven't bothered to read the last nine pages. However for those that believe in heaven and hell, as long as you are good in this world you will go to your imaginary heaven. Doesn't matter what your religion is. Even the good atheist will go to heaven if there is such a place. For me this is the only world. If there is a God/god, he will have plans for everybody, so you sanctimonious christians can stop kidding yourselves. Start being good and nice to so called non christians and dont force your religion on people

Rolly. Three questions. You must be an inquisitive young lady. I believe you want to be a doctor. Your first query about cutting, it depends on which part of the body you are cutting. Going thru the skin is a bit tougher than most people anticipate. Different tissues require different pressure. Sawing thru bone in amputation requires a saw. As far as your toileting goes, plenty fruit and fibre. Help move the toxins on. Unless you have slow metabolism. There are numerous causes of preterm birth. You really need to take your pick. Hormonal, the cervix dilating earlier than it should have list is endless. Hope this satisfies your current curiosity

Part of the whole idea of depression is to talk about it with your doctor or therapist. I feel the support of your family is very important. Gone are the days when there was stigma attached to mental health problems. There are different levels of depresion. Let me know how you get on. Never any point in keeping this secret from your loved ones.
Pets / Re: Pitbull Or Rottweiler: Which Is More Dangerous? by Balogun(m): 6:13pm On Mar 08, 2006
Thanks for taking the words out of my mouth Maxflame. There is no such thing as a dangerous dog. You have irresponsible owners. The way you have irresponsible parents. I owned a rottweiler and was brought up with children about the house. The only time there was biting was when my daughter age 3 was upset and bit the dog! Notice the so called dangerous dogs are named tyson, psycho, bruno or some other stupid name. Bring up any dog as a pet, it remains a pet, bring it up as an attack dog, that is what you get

Romance / Re: Are White Guys More Romantic Than Black Guys? by Balogun(m): 7:43pm On Feb 23, 2006
Find great difficulty in reading this forum about white guys being more romantic than black guys. You women must date unromantic black guys. Most women I have dated in my time have always had a good romantic time and they seem to talk about it for a long time. They are always desperate for a second date. Perfect date depends on both parties.

For those that read this forum, it is with sadness that I announce the death of my nephew on sunday morning in National Hospital, Abuja. It is such a tragedy and waste of a young life. I shall leave the replies to any medical questions in the capable hands of other doctors in the house until I feel ready again. God bless you all and may Kunle's soul rest in peace. AMEN

nicetohave I am glad you have stepped in to attend to the questions. I would like as many doctors that visit this site to give advice. Presently my nephew visiting Nigeria for the first time in over 10 years has been involved in a horrific accident in Abuja. We are currently trying to see whether we can fly him back to Britain. We seem to have problems with the Nigerian neurosurgeon who refuses to send his scan over for us to have second opinion. I am based in Edinburgh as you can see. I would have thought as common courtesy to a fellow doctor I deserve that sort of respect. Thats Nigeria for you.

Kokscity has hit the nail on the head. Timmy you are 26. What the f... are you doing still at home. At your age I had been qualified for over 2 years as a doctor, bought my own place and had my first child. Your dad wants you to move out to give him space with his wife. Get the hell out of their life and get your own life. If any of my children stay past their welcome time, I will let them know in no uncertain term. Grow up

See the answer to the catarrh problem as above. The nose is full of bacteria so having wounds in the nose and picking at it could be a source of infection. You could use an antibacterial nasal ointment or cream. Contents could be chlorhexidine/neomycin or mupirocin. All countries have different trade names for them

@alheri. There are many animals I would prefer to certain humans. Dont insult animals. What you see is what you get. With humans the cunningness is beyond belief
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 10:46pm On Jan 12, 2006
As you have said, you get your catarrh in the rainy season. The lining of the nose is sensitive to changes in atmospheric temperature and humidity. Decongestant nasal drops may help. Things like Vicks sinex. Remember if you are an athlete, some of these contain banned substances by the IAAF.

I am not sure 10 tablets of vitamins are necessary per day. There is usually one single vitamin complex tablet that you might need to take. As male who eats normally, you shouldn't need any supplements unless you suffer from some disease that affects absorption of nutrients from your gastro intestinal tract

These I assume are allegations and the doc in question has not been convicted yet of any misdemeanours. I take it on the above contributors to reassess their language as you might be liable to slander if this doc is found not guilty.

Romance / Re: Would You Marry a Single Parent? by Balogun(m): 4:10pm On Dec 26, 2005
It takes a very brave person and someone in love to marry a single parent. Known in the trade as coming with "baggage". Most child murders and cruelty are committed by step parents. All the people that say it doesn't matter, IT DOES. You need to think long and hard before you commit into such a relationship. If you have a child with this single parent, would both children be treated equally. Probably not. Look at all the wild life programmes. The first thing a new lion does is kill all the cubs from the previous lion. Thats what happens in human relations. Not all of it ends in murder but a fair few do.

Eczema usually has nothing to do with cleanliness. If that was the case, a lot of little boys who seem allergic to water would end up with eczema. With eczema, you can get an underlying skin infection. In such cases oral antibiotics or cream with steroids and antibiotics might help. Regular moisturizing with non scented moisturizer is important. First that keep the skin moist and stops you from scratching leading to secondary skin infection. Nappy rash cream or something like E45 is quite good to start with

Its a question of "are there any psychiatrists in the house". This is mainly a psychiatric problem. As mentioned before, accepting you have a problem is the first step. Until then it is always difficult. It has to be a therapy issue

You will have local bruising at the site of the surgery itself inside you and over the wound. They will take time to settle down. As for the other possible pathologies, it could also be something called mesenteric adenitis. This is more common in children that adults. Usually means your lymph nodes are inflamed after a viral infection. Can then present as pain in the abdomen. The list is almost endless.

First thing to know is was the appendix inflamed. Appendectomy (appendicectomy) done for non appendicitis means you might still have some other underlying pathology like ovarian cysts etc. Making a diagnosis of appendicitis in females is more difficult because there are so many other organs there that might be provoking the symptoms. As for getting better, it is a matter of well balanced diet and fluids, adequate analgesia and mobilisation. Get moving!!!

Sulphonamides are notorious for causing adverse drug reactions. You are lucky I have an extra degree in medical toxicology. We all have a genetic way of metabolising drug from what is the HLA type. People with what is known as slow N-acetylation phenotype have affected by sulphonamides. What you are getting is a possible pseudo allergic reaction. Stay off the sulphonamides!!
