Soulmatebj. Probably refer your question to my colleague kathyekiti who is doing obs/gyn forum. Would have been best for your doctor to tell you what was found on the scan before starting you on augmentin/cephalosporin. Might be pelvic inflammatory disease!! |

Rashes on lips depends on cause. With cold sores you can try zovirax(acyclovir). Sex addiction, see a psychologist. Preferably same one Michael Douglas saw!!! Involuntary shitting or defaecation, depends on cause. Investigate first and treat Recurrent UTI, check for what the organism is sensitive to and treat appropriately. Night flushes HRT (hormone replacement therapy) |

Naijaking. Thanks for keeping things going. Just didn't realise how much time I spend now mentoring junior doctors, preparing lectures for med students and doctors. You have to make sure you dont neglect your family as well. I will try and help on as regular basis as I can. Glad you are here |

Kathyekiti. What can I say. You are a God send for all the ObGyn problems. I haven't been on line for sometime. Unfortunately on calls, lecturing medical students + preparation is taking a lot of my time. Welcome aboard |

Happy New Year to you all. Thanks to naijaking for taking over the mantle as docinthehouse! I have just in last 2 months started a new as Consultant in Emergency Medicine in Scotland making it difficult to answer queries. I shall try my best in 2008. |

Manuch, I think we are waiting for instructions/advice from styrax! He has suggested you should fret |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 11:45pm On Nov 08, 2007 |
Thank you spoilt. You are right. You dont need to be a doctor to realise not getting your wife pregnant in a year is no reason to fret. I am sure she will concieve at the right time |

Kiesara, important to note that the advice given by mypeace is not a medical advice as she has mentioned. One of the docs will try and interpret your symptoms and might need to ask more questions! Like what your job is, how old you are. Any investigations done yet for your symptoms. Have you seen any doctors yet. Are you taking medication. List of questions endless for fatigue and headaches |

Vipico, s aureus from semen. That is new to me! If it is from blood, you would probably be too ill. Maybe it is contamination from skin. mdsocks, your brother might have an abscess recurring. Antibiotics will not work for that. Might need incision and drainage |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 11:27am On Oct 10, 2007 |
Vipico, I am not surprised Coamoxiclav(Augmentin) did not work for your staph aureus. Personally I would use Flucloxacillin. Where was the staph aureus cultured from? Spoilt, as I like to say, your friend is old enough and ugly enough to make up her own mind. Free country. Fertility drugs should be used by those who have been investigated properly and prescribed by recognised experts in management of fertility. |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 8:02pm On Oct 09, 2007 |
Thanks naijaking 1. I am hoping more docs will help out. Crazyp, getting pregnant is not a simple thing. The drug your friend is on is Clomifene(Clomid) It is used in cases of infertility. If your friend has been trying for less than a year, I think patience is what she needs, not drugs. Did she have any investigations before being put on the tablets. Had she been on contraceptives in the past. The body takes time to readjust to numerous insults we subject it to. Thanks for your support larriederm |

Gentleone, with pregnancy ligaments in the body tend to stretch a bit. Some women have enough discomfort in their hip and back that they sometimes need crutches. Most of these will return to normal after child birth. Trust your doctor |

Darkroll. Unlikely to get a toilet disease using public toilet!! My advice is see your general practitioner to examine you properly before you start using any creams |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 9:22pm On Oct 04, 2007 |
Kaypinch, probably best you start a new thread. In cases of negligence, you need to seek legal opinion not a medical one. Good luck |

Dollyshow, I am sorry I missed your question. Pain in the hip, worse with with sitting and lying. Improves with walking. Do you mind my asking how old you are. Is there history of arthritis in the family. How long has the pain been going for. Your doctor has probably given you some anti inflammatory tablets. Mypeace, I wish you best with getting pregnant. Need to get your urine or beta HCG repeated. Do you have any symptoms of early pregnancy |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 9:55pm On Oct 03, 2007 |
Gentleone - back pain is usually caused by musculoligamentous problems. Adequate pain relief and relaxation. How old are you? Ijay07 - Congratulations with your pregnancy. How many tablets of coartem did you take before you realised your pregnancy. As you said studies have only been done in animals and there is no specific data about human problems at any trimester. Efuah - menstrual pain is mainly from the contracting muscles of the uterus. Womens periods are a mystery to most people even gynaecologist. Unless you are bleeding too heavily, the odd extra period is nothing to worry about Mustay - you will have to re ask your question, unless I find it further down the line Polycystic ovarian disease - there is a whole book on that. Friend of mine suffers from it and she gets severe pain a different times of the month. Sometimes even requires morphine for the pain. Nobody knows the cause. Mainly related to hormones. See your gynaecologist. Causes infertility sometimes Honey J - picture of the rash please to my e mail. Is it a raised rash, a flat one. Is it itchy. Is it red. More description please ola4U - how old are you. do you have congenital cataracts. More information Bolorunfem - what you are describing in your skin is very much like keloid scarring. very common in black people after lacerations and surgery. Excision of keloid scar could lead to a bigger keloid scar. Its from the skin over healing My peace - if your beta HCG levels are normal, it is highly unlikely that you are pregnant. Chances are stress have made your periods irregular. Unless you are trying for a baby, best to used adequate contraception I think I have covered everybody on this page. Sorry it took so long to reply. What happened to all my other good doctors helping out. |

I was hoping the other doctors in the house would help. I will answer all question put in this forum in the next 24 hours. I have been busy arranging another position for myself which involves teaching medical students from Dundee and Edinburgh universities. This will help my love for teaching students and junior doctors. Enough excuses and talking about myself. I shall get down to answering in next 24 hours |

I am glad other doctors are helping with this forum. We just need a gyneacologist to give Attention advice. Since I am based in Scotland, I can't recommend a good gynaecologist in PH. This I assume is Port Harcourt. Christie, the main thing about medicine is accurate diagnosis. Is your diagnosis of osteo arthritis accurate. If it is, you might want to try different anti inflammatories and maybe add something else like paracetamol to it |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 5:54pm On Aug 16, 2007 |
Konti. Have you had endoscopy to confirm the fact you have stomach ulcer? Biopsy might show the cause of your ulcer is infective. H pylori is the cause of most ulcers. Most people treat with antibiotics/proton pump inhibitors eg omeprazole, pantoprazole. Antibiotics used are clarithromycin and amoxicillin or metronidazole. See your physician. Important to get the diagnosis correct first. Wrong diagnosis, wrong treatment and you dont get better. |

Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 10:26pm On Aug 14, 2007 |
Everything Idiat depends on if your illness was a chronic or acute. If you lost weight and blood over long time, it usually takes the same length of time to recover. Iron tablets, vitamin B complex strong and good diet is important. For most of the time the body can only absorb the maximum it is designed to absorb. Any excess will just be wasted. Patience and good diet. If you are a woman, then you might benefit from the extras above |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 10:22pm On Aug 01, 2007 |
Big spif. A full medical check involves basic observations which will be your pulse, blood pressure. An ECG/EKG depending where you live. Blood tests to check your blood count, Urea/Electrolytes and liver function test. Blood sugar. Chest xray if you haven't had one done. That would be basic. Anything after that is extra. Status for things like HIV usually involves counselling before the tests. Mypeace difficult to answer your questions as too many acronyms IYGMD!!! |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 4:24pm On Jun 20, 2007 |
I will start with the easiest question. Fadenike, the main causes of nose bleed that is seasonal is due to pressure in the air. To avoid these, your friend should try and avoid blow his/her nose too hard, avoid picking the nose. If the bleeding continues, might require cauterization of the vessels inside the nose. Jwesig88, STDs have different symptoms and signs. Women tend not to show too many signs making diagnosis difficult and late. Preventative measures such as condom is best way to avoid them. You could always say no! Stick to one partner and for you men out there, more than one partner doesn't make you more of a man. Means you have difficulty satisfying one woman!! Big spif, you have too many problems and I feel you should take the whole of your family to a General Practitioner or dietitian. Mustay, the black spots from the mosquito bites are just healing/scar in black skin. Priscare, with chicken pox you get vesicles that contain viruses, when they heal you end up with scar tissue which appears as "holes" on the skin. I think that is everybody answered 1 Like |

Short answer is no. Marry away. The only time blood types are worrying is if there is a pathological problem with it |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 5:26pm On Jun 12, 2007 |
Ogbdcm, I am sure that is not the advice doncartel wants. My view is always when you are ready to quit you will. You obviously haven't reached your lowest level yet. To quit requires you to move away from the area where you are most tempted. You need to find out why you feel the need for regular highs. Dont forget for each high you get, there is payment of low later. This means to keep on the high you would need to use more "gear". Mypeace similar reply to jesuseun |

Dont see any reason why you shouldn't be able to conceive. As long as you are producing the eggs and your partner has the right amount of sperm in his semen and your "plumbing" is all in working order. |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 5:30pm On May 28, 2007 |
Need to reply all the letters. Joyjames, it not unusual for the man's ejaculate to run out. It is not a curse. Different men produce different volumes of ejaculates Lissom, ingestion of detergent doesn't cause that much harm in the UK. Children ingest these things. As long as it hasn't been inhaled, the treatment is usually symptomatic Jesu Seun, radio frequency have been implicated in different types of leukaemia. I dont have hard fact for this, but I know people dont like transmitters built in their backyard Juxtkem, you need to see a proper gynecologist urgently. Speak to your mother. They tend to be more understanding. As to why you are having unprotected sex at your age, that is another discussion Sista, I feel we have a lot to talk about. Please e mail me for private consultations |

You are probably dehydrated. Not drinking the right kind of fluid. Minimum of 3-4 litres of water daily. Not coke, tea, coffee or alcohol. They have diuretic effects and dehydrate you. |

Sorry based in UK. I am sure some of the doctors in Nigeria can help you. At your age, you shouldn't need mammogram unless there is something major wrong |
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Balogun(m): 10:44am On Apr 18, 2007 |
What time do you go to sleep. Do you have an afternoon nap or early evening nap. What time do you eat before bed. Do you drink alcohol late in the evening. There are so many things that alter our sleep pattern. Eat early in the evening. Avoid late alcohol. Avoid any naps close to bed time. Personal time and meditation before bed. Comfortable bed to suit you is important. The right night time temperature. Not too hot not too cold. Sounds like a lot of things to think about. However if any of these are out of sync, you end up with a restless night and a very tired next day! |
