OndoTrends:
The Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Akure, Ondo State Capital, on Wednesday nullified the election of Ikengboju Gboluga, who represents Okitipupa/Irele Federal constituency in the Federal House of Representatives under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The defendant was also said to have sworn allegiance to the United Kingdom having acquired the citizenship of the country and the court said he was not eligible to contest the February 23, 2019, National Assembly election for his allegiance to the UK.

The tribunal then declared Albert Akintoye of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the election and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to issue Certificate of Return to Akintoye after withdrawing same from Gboluga.

Foreign AffairsRe: Beji Caid Essebsi Is Dead! Tunisian President Dies Aged 92 by bangbangall: 2:21pm On Jul 25, 2019
NairaMedia:
Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi, the North African country’s first democratically elected leader, died Thursday at the age of 92, his office said.

The veteran politician, the oldest head of state after Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, came to power in 2014, three years after the Arab Spring uprising toppled longtime despot Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and sparked revolts in several Arab nations.

He had been hospitalised with a severe illness in late June and was returned to intensive care on Thursday.

PoliticsRe: Ministerial Screening: Lawan Asks Amaechi To “Take A Bow” by bangbangall: 4:52pm On Jul 24, 2019
OddsIsland:
The Senate President on Wednesday protected the immediate past Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, at the ministerial screening, asking him not to answer any questions but “take a bow”.

Lawan said Amaechi, being a former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, was a lawmaker and thus should be protected from questioning.

Incidentally, Amaechi was grilled by the 8th Senate led by Senator Bukola Saraki.

The Senate Minority Leader, Eyinnaya Abaribe, however, said senators from Rivers State wanted to ask questions.

Lawan quickly rejected the move to question Amaechi.

The Senate President, who has been accused of being President Muhammadu Buhari’s stooge, was, however, in for a shock when Gombe-Central lawmaker, Senator Danjuma Goje, noted that the Senate rules do not extend the “take a bow” privilege to state lawmakers.

Goje, who is also a former House of Assembly member, said he wasn’t shown a similar gesture when he was nominated a minister as he was fully grilled by the Senate.

In his response, the Senate President said even though the Senate rules do not “apply to state lawmakers”, Amaechi should be extended the courtesy.

The Senate President said, “I agree totally that it is not in our rules but we can regulate ourselves even without things in the rules. So, we adopt this because we should extend this privilege to the House of Assembly. I think there is nothing wrong in that. The nominee (Amaechi) is just a beneficiary by chance. We are not doing this for him.”

PoliticsRe: Buhari Re-nominates Aliyu Abubakar NCC Job, Rejected In 2016 By Senate by bangbangall: 3:19pm On Jul 18, 2019
ivandragon:
A man nominated last week by President Muhammadu Buhari as commissioner in the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) was once rejected for the same position by the Senate over shady academic records, PREMIUM TIMES can report.

Aliyu Abubakar was named among five nominees sent by President Buhari as announced by Senate President Ahmad Lawan on the Senate’s floor penultimate Tuesday.

This was the second time the Bauchi-born Mr Abubakar is tapped for the plum job. He is proposed to represent the North-east on the NCC board.

Mr Abubakar was first nominated in 2016 for the position but was rejected by lawmakers in November of that year.

He was rejected along with a former speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yisa Ezekiel, whose qualification as a nurse posed a hitch for him to satisfy the criteria.

The lawmakers hinged their decision on Mr Abubakar’s lack of adequate training and experience, as stipulated by the law. They also questioned the genuineness of the available documents he presented for screening.

Mr Abubakar’s paraded qualification of diploma in computer falls short of the requirement of the NCC Act for commissioners of the telecom regulator.

The Act stipulates that appointees for that role must have qualification and experience in stated relevant fields.

The listed expertise areas are finance or accounting; law; consumer affairs; telecommunications engineering; information technology; engineering generally; economics; and public administration.

Why Senate Went Into Closed-Door Session Before Confirming CJN Tanko Muhammad – Official
“So there is no way someone who does not possess the basic skills or expertise to key into our vision for a sustainable communications industry could have been cleared to serve on the board.

“For instance, one was a career nurse and the other was a holder of a one-year diploma in computer as highest qualification. The question is: what inputs would they be making towards consolidating on the on-going improvements in the agency,” a Senate report noted at the time.

In raising doubts over the credibility of his claimed qualification and experience, the lawmakers said Mr Aliyu was “a candidate who is not prepared for the demands of the office such as required” of the NCC job

A Senate committee headed by Gilbert Nnaji said Mr Abubakar could not produce credible educational certificates for the committee to verify at the screening.

“He obviously lacks the professional and educational disciplines provided in section 7(1) (a-h) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 which stipulates the qualification of the Commission’s Board”, Mr Nnaji said then.

The committee queried the Police Extract and Court Affidavit Mr Abubakar submitted for the loss of his School Certificates, dated September 21, 2016.

The committee expressed suspicion of Mr Abubakar’s claim that the documents got lost on September 19, 2016, well after he had been nominated for the position.

Mr Nnaji said the nominee only collected his diploma in computer studies, completed at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in 2000, in September 2016.

“For his Diploma in Computer Studies completed at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in 2000, Mr Aliyu Abubakar ultimately collected the result in September 2016 because, according to him, he did not see any reason for its collection as he never intended to do any government job with it”, Mr Nnaji said.

Controversial figure
Memorable narrative from Mr Abubakar’s Senate hearing at the time was his heated encounter with the lawmakers over his strong censure of the Senate in the past.

The nominee, who was confronted with evidence of his criticism of the legislative arm of the government, including leading protests at the gates of the National Assembly, owned up to the position and proceeded to defend his stance.

He flayed the Senate as extravagant and called for its scrapping.

Mr Abubakar said “the senate is an avenue for wastage of scarce economic resources of the country” and should be abolished to save the country’s finances.”

It is unclear what action the current Senate will take on the nominee.

Inquiries put to Garba Shehu, a spokesperson of the president, on why Mr Buhari renominated Mr Abubakar despite the Senate’s damning report, was not answered.

A text message sent by this reporter on Mr Shehu’s request is yet to be replied.

PoliticsRe: Bishop Kukah Blows Hot Over ‘demonization’ Of Fulani Herdsmen by bangbangall: 8:11am On Jul 17, 2019
Flashyoil1:
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Revd. Matthew Kukah, has warned against blanket demonisation of herdsmen, especially of the Fulani stock.

He warned that such actions could be preamble to a breakout of violent confrontation against the Fulani.

According to Bishop Kukah, hate speech often preceded any genocide experienced in history.

He spoke on Tuesday at a colloquium on fake news and hate speech organised by the Olusegun Obasanjo Centre for African Studies, an arm of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja.

He said Nigerians “have to be very careful” before the situation degenerates beyond control.

He likened the uproar and profiling of the Fulani to what happened to the Igbo leading up to the Nigerian civil war between 1967 and 1970.

“If it is Fulani today, yesterday it was the Igbos,” he said.

Reacting to the recent controversy on the use of picture of a herdsman on the Nigerian passport booklet, Kukah said he was almost swayed by the fake news, before he got a copy of the passport himself.

The cleric displayed his passport to illustrate the content and debunk the insinuations that it carried only a picture of a herdsman.

“When I look at my passport, it has the coat of arm and map of Nigeria. Then right in front of the data page where all my information is, I have the Bini. I am not a Bini man, but I am eminently proud of this. I didn’t even know it was here, because I had to go through the passport page by page.

“When I opened the passport the first thing I saw was Zuma Rock, then I see Tiv dancers. Who gave them permission to put Tiv dancers? Then I got to next page, before I came to this poor Fulani man who is standing with his cows.

“Why is it exciting? It is exciting because this is the time for us to ‘hate’, literally tag every Fulani as a herdsman. We are on a very dangerous precipice,” he said.

Kukah said it was time for those in the position of leadership to tame the situation.

“Those who lead us should better stand up and tell us where we are going,” he said.

The Catholic cleric also urged Nigerians to be each other’s keeper and avoid ethno-religious profiling in dealing with each other.

To further tame the spread of hate, Mr Kukah called on media to sieve through in choosing who to give audience to avoid persons who propagate hate and mischief.

In his opening remarks, NOUN’s vice chancellor, Abdalla Adamu, said liberalisation of the media space by technology provided opportunity for easy spread of fake news and hate speech.

He lamented increase in hate speech in the polity which, he said, will not augur well for the society.

“What we see are labels over crimes. The moment you start talking about labels, you are breeding hate speech,” Adamu said.

In her contribution, former journalist and politician, Chris Anyanwu, also bemoaned “too much of this hate and bile stuff” warning that it could consume the country if not properly tackled.

“We have to be careful not to use our own hands to set our own house on fire and someone will sit there in Russia laughing,” she said.

Ms Anyanwu, a former senator, said the media has a big role to play in reversing the trend, but lamented poor quality of journalism currently in the country.

She said the rise of “brown envelope” in journalism has bred poor attitude to work thus some reporters rely on press releases churned out by newsmakers.
