Engr Rabiu M Kwankwaso has reformed and Revitalized Kano, the development is visible foe all to see...5 fly over bridges, 5 modern estates with over 2000 houses, 350km inter city roads etc...:he is a technocrat.
Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is relatively young but an experience legislator, a bridge builder and a true Politician.

I do believe kwankwaso will develop nigeria more but tambuwal has a better acceptance ratio nd win probability

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria
(FAAN) shut down Gombe International
Airport yesterday ostensibly for repairs but
the opposition All Progressives Congress
(APC) said it was a deliberate act to stop
their leaders from landing at the airport.
The airport was closed down when a
delegation of APC leaders was airborne in
a chartered plane from Abuja to inaugurate
the party's interim leaders in Gombe
yesterday.
When the plane approached Gombe, the
pilot was advised to divert because the
tarmac was being mended.
The pilot turned and made for Bauchi
airport but it was after lengthy conversation
back and forth that the aircraft was
permitted to land in Bauchi.
The delegation then proceeded to Gombe
by road.
A former Minister of State for Power and
Steel, Malam Murtala Aliyu, who was on
board the plane, confirmed the incident to
Daily Trust last night.
He said their aircraft was airborne when
they were told they won't be allowed to
land in Gombe because of some repair
work.
But he said they found out that this was
done simply to sabotage the planned
inauguration of the APC executive in the
state.

PoliticsRe: It Doesn't Make Sense, Nollywood more Important than North East to GEJ by bappahman(op): 4:29pm On Dec 30, 2013
N2 Billion Budget For Security In The
North-east?
President Jonathan never fails to amaze
Nigerians. The north-east, which currently
is the most volatile zone, would get a paltry
N2 billion for security and reconstruction in
2014. Boko Haram sponsors would be
having a good laugh by now. Even they
will vote more than N2 billion for their 2014
killing operations. Is President Jonathan
serious? Does this not finally expose the
president regarding his attitude towards
security in certain parts of the country?
What does the president then say to his
numerous detractors who say that he is in
fact enjoying and intends to electorally
benefit from the crisis in the north-east?
I have never seen a politician who makes
the job of his detractors so easy as
President Jonathan. That is precisely why
the APC’s preferred presidential candidate
for the PDP in 2015 remains President
Jonathan. And, by the way, those who
think that there will be no elections in parts
of the north-east because there will be
emergency in place (reference to Prof.
Jega’s statement) should perish the idea
because there will be elections in the
whole of Nigeria in 2015. The APC-
controlled House of Reps will never grant
approval for any extension of emergency to
reach the election period.

PoliticsSam Nda-isaiah: What Jonathan Should Do In 2014 by bappahman(op): 4:25pm On Dec 30, 2013
We are 48 hours away from the year 2014.
2014 would be Jonathan’s last full year in
power, so he has to make full use of it.
That would be his last chance to construct
a meaningful legacy for himself. As it
stands today, he is in a very bad shape.
The legacy he has built so far has been
that of incompetence, corruption and
impunity. But one year is surely enough to
reverse this outlook. After all, the late
Murtala Mohammed spent only six months
in office but he made a clear statement on
competence and the fight against
corruption.
The first thing the president must decide to
do in 2014 is tackle corruption. President
Jonathan must make up his mind about
corruption. On New Year’s Day, he must
make this resolution. And the place to start
is for him to change his current attitude
about corruption. Our president does not
appear to know that corruption is an imp
that stunts the growth of nations. Our
president’s mien suggests that he
encourages, protects and romances
corruption, sometimes even with the life of
his government. President Jonathan must
change his disposition towards corruption.
No nation has ever developed or even
made any meaningful progress without first
tackling corruption. All great leaders who
have made a difference to their countries
have said so.
Second, the president must change his
mindset about security of life in the country.
The first duty of any government is the
security and safety of the people and, in
fact, our constitution states that the security
and welfare of the people are the
responsibility of government. The Nigerian
state has technically failed, if one
considers the level of insecurity that daily
confronts Nigerians. The president only
talks and complains about terrorism
without doing much about it. I have never
seen a nation’s president that sounds so
helpless as Jonathan does. Yet, he wants
to continue as president. Jonathan does
not even comment on the armed robberies
and kidnappings that have virtually taken
over the land. Armed robbers now use
grenades, yet the president doesn’t see an
emergency. Are the robberies and
kidnappings also the handiwork of those
who have promised to make the country
ungovernable for him?
The thing the president must do in this
matter is to first know that the nature of
crime has changed globally, so the
strategy and tactics of their resolution must
change accordingly. That also means that
the government must invest heavily in the
training of security agents who must now
be grounded in new methods. High-
precision equipment are available to
defeat these modern-day criminals, but,
with the level of corruption we see in
today’s government, Nigeria may not
benefit from them. These equipment and
training are available to any serious leader
who is serious about keeping his people
safe and secured.
The kind of poignant stories one hears
from those on the battlefield fighting
terrorism must be tackled at once. Some of
the commanders on the field occasionally
use their salaries to service trucks because
of corruption. For the first time, some
soldiers now abandon their commanding
officers and run away because they don’t
feel adequately equipped. We are courting
disaster as a nation, and, if this scourge of
corruption is not decisively handled by the
president, anything can happen. If his
ministers use bulletproof vehicles, then,
the president must personally ensure that
those on the battlefields are at least
properly kitted with modern weaponry to
confront the nation’s enemies. The
president must personally ensure that this
is done because this is an absolutely
important matter.
Another thing the president must confront
in 2014 is unemployment. About 80 per
cent of Nigerian graduates is currently
unemployed and a total of 52 per cent of
Nigerian youths is without employment as
of 2012. These figures must have
worsened by now. Nobody will need to tell
the president that this situation is
unsustainable. There are several ways to
meaningfully create jobs that will ultimately
boost the economy, and I will name a few.
In spite of the disgraceful security situation
in the country, Nigeria currently has only
about 370,000 policemen. This is
scandalous for a country of 173 million
people. For a start, Nigeria should not
have fewer than a million policemen,
considering its size. And I think the
president should give an executive order
for the employment of one million
graduates from the current 80 per cent
graduate unemployment and give them
world-class training to face the challenges
of a modern society. The second thing the
president should do in creating
employment is to compel the petroleum
minister to produce the $10.8 billion that
even Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala admits has
been unaccounted for.
This $10.8 billion is roughly N1.7 trillion.
Let this whole amount be invested in the
housing sector in all the zones of the
federation. Nigeria currently has an
estimated 17 million housing deficit. This
N1.7 trillion will go a long, long way.
Jonathan should resolve to construct one
million housing units in 2014. This is one
surefire way of tackling the current very
embarrassing unemployment level in the
country. And nobody should say it is not
possible because it is. It has been
estimated that building one million housing
units countrywide would create
approximately 30 million jobs because
almost everybody from architects, quantity
surveyors, estate agents, petty food sellers,
horticulturists, decorator, labourers, block
makers, iron rod sellers, engineers,
furniture makers, insurance agents, cement
sellers and many, many more would be
engaged.
And if the N1.7 trillion missing oil money is
not immediately available because it has
been stolen, while the president is trying to
recover the money through the EFCC,
ICPC, police and SSS, he could loan
money at single-digit interest from the N3
trillion stuck in the pension fund. He could
borrow, because the money would be
repaid from the proceeds of the sales of
these houses anyway. The current
Jonathan government’s policy of a private
sector-driven mass housing programme
will fail because interest rates of over 20
per cent from banks will keep the houses
out of the reach of ordinary people. Only
millionaires will afford them.
Another thing the president must do in
2014 is to finally make up his mind to
tackle the oil theft in the country. For the
first time in Nigeria, and this is happening
under Jonathan, oil theft has been taken to
an industrial scale with the quantity of oil
now being stolen outstripping the amount
left for the country. Jonathan should stop
behaving as if he is helpless. If he is, then,
he should resign as president. And if
Jonathan is serious, he can, before the end
of next year, increase our oil production to
3 million barrels per day. A more serious
president would be able to achieve 4
million barrels daily.
We must maximise our oil production
levels as quickly as we can, because the
world energy order is about to change
forever. With the success of the hydraulic
fracking technique pioneered by the United
States and with about 20 African countries
about to become major oil producers, oil
will lose its princely value in the next 10
years, in any case.
If Jonathan is able to face these and
achieve even half of them, he would have
helped himself greatly and his legacy
would be different from the terrible one he
is about to leave behind. But, again, from
his body language, it would appear that I
have just wasted my time and ink.

PoliticsThe Dangote Checkmate And How The 2015 Elections Will Play Out - Dele Momodu by bappahman(op): 11:04am On Dec 28, 2013
Fellow Nigerians, let me start by sending you my warmest compliments of this special season. It has been one hell of a year for our beloved country and most of us in general. The tempo of politics has nearly reached a crescendo as we meander our way towards the year 2014. Next year promises to be an interesting one already as those masquerades seeking political offices or simply waiting to renew their tenure must unmask eventually. There would be no hiding place for the goldfish by this time next year.

I have therefore chosen to move beyond the letter writers and their satanic epistles. If they like, they can continue to strip themselves naked in the market place. The chicanery that brought them together is what will scatter them ultimately. A house built with spittle would easily collapse at the fall of the dew. Truth is, none of the letters truthfully addressed the issues of development. They were letters reeking with personal animosity and rabid vendetta. The common motive was simple and easy to decipher: who controls power and our commonwealth from 2015, after the elections? No more, no less.

Let’s therefore work out the calculations as to what to expect ahead of time as events continue to unravel. By popular demand, I wish to go ahead and give a sneak preview of the melodrama long before it premieres. The actors are not new to the play. The dramatis personae won’t be many as some of them are going to be cast in dual or multiple roles. The plot would be laden with twists and turns of intriguing dimensions. There will be use of deliberate distortions in order to camouflage the real intentions. Multifaceted actors in the troupe will appear at brief intervals and disappear in a jiffy just the way they came. This is the stuff of thrillers.

Let the play begin. The protagonist remains the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. One of his hidden names, Azikiwe, would soon be re-introduced as a stage-name. It is needed to mesmerise some emotional spectators who live majorly on raw sentiment. His arrival will be heralded by a grand ceremony to be orchestrated by a mass choir and chorus singers who have been rehearsing for years. Many reasons, real, surreal and unreal, would be adduced for the second coming of a man who has ostensibly come to save Nigeria from its enemies in their imagination. It would be said that the Messiah, yes, our Lord and Saviour, needs more time to complete his miracles. The supposed blasphemy would be concocted and regurgitated by the biggest men and women of God as we have seen before. They will call the name of God in vain and prophesies would come flying in from every direction in staccato fashion.

The lead actor would have to make a grandiloquent appearance and a flowery speech to thank his good people who are begging him to stay on in power. He would invite his fellow party men and women to join hands with him and follow him to the Jerusalem of our dream. He would have to offer an olive branch and attempt the Mandela style of reconciliation. This may include bringing on stage a new National Chairman to placate embittered party members. He may also ask his assailants to cool temper by dropping his current Vice President, a perfect gentleman, for someone from the other side. That person may turn out to be Alhaji Sule Lamido, the embattled Governor of Jigawa State. Nothing is ever too strange or stupidly bizarre in this macabre dance. The name of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa has also been touted for his nationwide popularity and achievement as Military Governor of Lagos State.

But the lead actor may decide to shock the audience by announcing a sudden retirement from acting. This is most unlikely and may be far-fetched. But those who should know are willing to place a bet on it. If it ever happens, new actors are likely to come on stage. The business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote may be the joker in the pack. It is the ultimate ace to be unleashed against the enemy camp if it becomes obvious that the opposition is gaining the upper hand. Dangote may be paired with the Akwa Ibom Governor, Dr Godswill Akpabio, a consummate politician and close confidant of the incumbent. The dreamers of this ingenious package are hoping to neutralise the likes of Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwanso, Governor of Kano, the State with the largest population in Nigeria. Akpabio is believed to have the requisite charisma, track record of performance, coupled with humongous access to oil wealth to give Dangote a major boost.

There is a Team B hanging around. Those who play the religious card want Jonathan to support the Senate President, Senator David Alechenu Bonaventure Mark, a Catholic and retired Army General since it is certain opposition will pick a Muslim Northerner as its candidate. He has been the stabilising factor for the Jonathan administration to date with an intimidating profile and presumed acceptance within military circles. It is believed that a Mark candidacy would weaken the romance of Generals Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar and even Olusegun Obasanjo with the opposition since they can trust him more to protect their interests. “He would be an easier man to deal with than the likes of Buhari, Tinubu, and others”, said an impeccable source. The second reason in his favour is how to neutralise the rising profile of The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who is being touted as the assumed flag-bearer of the opposition.

David Mark is believed to command nationwide respect and reportedly has unfettered access to the individual with the biggest cash-cow in Africa, Dr Michael Adenuga Jnr. Adenuga is seen as a silent power house who is capable monumental possibilities. The plotters of this strategy believe it can fly. Their calculation is predicated on picking the Vice President from the South West since it is obvious the opposition is not likely to pick theirs from there. They believe they can persuade Alhaji Tajudeen Afolabi Adeola to cross over to PDP. Fola Adeola, former Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Bank comes with impeccable pedigree and superlative credentials. He’s one of the most respected New Age Muslims in Nigeria. He comes from Ogun State, the traditional homestead of some of the renowned and greatest leaders and legends of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ernest Shonekan, Obafemi Awolowo, Moshood Abiola, Wole Soyinka, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Adeoye Lambo, Bola Ajibola, and others. Adeola would merely be following in their footsteps.

There is a third option. No one can totally ignore former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in political considerations. While he appears to be floating at the moment, it is believed that Abubakar has a stupendous war chess at his command. He still controls a chunky arm of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua political structure which he can use for himself or donate to others. PDP may decide to use him as a sword of Damocles against his estranged boss, General Olusegun Obasanjo.
According to my sources, it is not in the interest of Jonathan to risk being disgraced out of power by an obvious gang-up. “If I were Jonathan, I will throw all my resources behind a good candidate in order to frustrate the opposition. By voluntarily giving up power, Jonathan would have eclipsed Obasanjo’s claim to fame. He has nothing more to prove other than to ensure a less rancorous transition”, said one of the brains behind this incredible plan.

The reason behind this entire plot is how to upstage an audacious opposition that seems poised and determined to dislodge the ruling party. On its part, the opposition is moving at frenetic pace to overwhelm the PDP. The APC is imbued with renewed confidence based on its ability to build a broad coalition of different political parties. If things go according to plans, they intend to take over the leadership of the National Assembly shortly. They appear very serious about this tall ambition now that they have virtually succeeded in controlling the lower chamber, the House of Representatives. They are plotting the final offensive at the Senate where they hope to be in the majority in the near future.

If they succeed, the position of Senate President would become tenuous and shaky. This is going to be a battle royale as those loyal to President Jonathan have promised a fight-to-finish when the time comes. They would have to fight dirty as this is going to practically halt in its tracks the ambitions of the current Senate President, David Mark. The President’s team is trying to label these wholesale defections as carpet – crossing in a bid to use a constitutional sledgehammer to stem the tide and unseat the legislators abandoning the ruling party like rats from a sinking ship.

No matter what happens, the opposition ticket is visibly dangling between Aminu Tambuwal and Rabiu Kwankwanso. The only problem they must confront is the undying ambition of General Muhammadu Buhari. Neither of the younger aspirants can go far without the endorsement of the strongman. And they know it. It is a subject APC members discuss only in hushed tones. The Buhari factor is so volatile that some members are hoping for a miracle that would make it possible for Buhari to withdraw voluntarily from the race. “I will be certain we can win the day Buhari throws his weight behind our leading candidate-in-waiting who for now is Tambuwal”, said a source in APC.

But the Buhari brouhaha is not going to go away that easily. The former Head of State and his die-hard supporters believe he is the only one who can defeat Jonathan or any other PDP candidate in 2015. “It is Buhari or no one else, otherwise let Jonathan continue”, one of his closest allies told me last week in Lagos. I was momentarily dazed by this submission from a seasoned politician from the North. But the man stuck to his guns that APC does not have any other candidate with the status of Buhari that is capable of confronting a sit-in President.

But others within APC are of the opinion that Buhari cannot force his candidacy on the party. According to this school of thought, Buhari’s candidacy is only being pushed by those who think they stand to gain a lot if he becomes President. “Buhari himself is man enough to know that it would be practically impossible to do better than he did in his previous attempts. He has demonstrated a resolve to join hands with others to dislodge PDP and this is highly commendable”, said the source.

Those angling for younger candidates believe either Tambuwal or Kwankwanso can get the job done. They think Tambuwal has the better chance because he’s been able to build bridges nationwide unlike Kwankwanso whose influence is more in the North. The dream is for all these politicians to queue behind whoever is chosen without any rancour. They have also zeroed in on two possible running mates. They are Governors Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State and Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State. Fashola is loved because of his steady achievements in Lagos. He’s a modern administrator with a powerful vision the type Nigeria needs to attain progress at this time and age.

The odds against Fashola are that he is a Muslim like Tambuwal or Kwankwanso. And religion is likely to play a major role in the 2015 presidential election. The favoured candidate for deputy, Amaechi, is from the same geo-political zone as President Jonathan. He is also a devout Catholic like David Mark. Like Fashola, he’s regarded as one of the best achievers in Nigeria today. His supporters believe he deserves the ticket because of his principled and courageous stance against Jonathan. “Without Amaechi, the opposition won’t be as formidable as it has become today. And if we want to take the number one position from the South South, it is only fair that we compensate the region with number two”, said an APC stalwart.

So far so good, both sides are busy with their secret permutations and cranking up their credentials. What is not known is if they would give peace a chance.

However, the nation is anxiously awaiting details of what the contending forces have to offer the hapless population. For the long-suffering people of Nigeria this is really the crux of the matter. The questions being asked are “Will they come out with the same worn-out platitudes, promises and jejune manifestoes that lack clear principles and ideologies or will we for once have clear-headed policies and plans?”
There are many questions begging for answers. They will determine whether our people will be apathetic or truly contribute to the election and not selection of their leaders.

It is hoped the warring groups will clearly demonstrate how they intend to save us as a nation or conversely display how they intend to tie us once again to the stakes and pull the noose.
It is a matter of time.

PoliticsProgressive Governors' Forum Press Statement: by bappahman(op): 7:24pm On Dec 27, 2013
As we come to the end of another turbulent
year, marked by growing insecurity,
worsening poverty and the creeping
dictatorship and intolerance in the country,
the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF)
wishes to express its solidarity with the
Nigerian people and commend their
patience, resilience and dogged resistance
in the face of a federal government that has
lost touch with the dreams and aspirations
of citizens.
We gladly observe that even as 2013
recedes into the annals of history as one of
the worst years in Nigeria’s history, a few
developments point to the fact that a new
hope is emerging on the horizon, notably
the merger of opposition parties and the
growing commitment of progressives and
patriotic political leaders to unite under the
All Progressives Congress (APC) with the
single-minded determination of rescuing
Nigeria from a federal government that not
only condones corruption, but has elevated
graft into an art form.
There is no doubt that the merger of
opposition parties today represents a major
source of hope for the nation and our
people are full of expectations that our
party, APC, its leadership, elected
representatives and governments will take
the right step and measures to move the
country away from all the multitudes of
crises, halt the current movement towards
collapse, restore the credibility of
institutions of governance at all levels and
respect and recognize the value of the
human person. This demands that all
political leaders in the country must be
ready to make sacrifices.
We therefore wish to acknowledge and
commend our party (APC) leadership for
demonstrating high resolve to set aside all
their personal positions and aspirations in
order to provide the needed leadership to
unite all Nigerian progressives. As
Progressive Governors, we are proud of the
achievements of our party and will continue
to support our leaders towards rescuing our
dear nation, Nigeria.
Against the background of today's federal
government that steers the affairs of the
nation based on convenience rather than
constitutionality, Nigerians have been
reduced to helpless observers of a
presidency that is only efficient in
weakening its moral authority, making it
difficult to relate with other levels and tiers
of government in accordance with the
provisions of the 1999 Constitution as
amended.
The hard and incomprehensible reality is
that the Presidency, federal government
and ruling PDP have become reckless,
dishonest and completely insensitive to
minimum requirement of protecting the lives
and property of Nigerians. Government, as
far as the conduct of the federal
government shows, is all about the political
aspirations of functionaries of government,
notably Mr. President. This is unfortunate
and the consequence is the increasing
wave of both intra-party and wider national
political crises without any visible
demonstration of capacity by the federal
government and the ruling party to manage
or resolve the crises.
Given the severity and intensity of the
crises facing our dear nation, it is clear that
rescuing Nigeria will have to commence
with a strong commitment to a national
agenda of reconciliation in order to resolve
grievances of citizens and bring forth a
clear roadmap for nation building founded
on respect for our diversities. Such a
commitment should be founded on the
principles of acknowledging deep-seated
anger of citizens and recognizing that it is
in the first place a product of injustices over
years of bad governance. As a result,
governments at all levels at different times
have infringed on the rights and liberties of
citizens. Citizens, have in turn, been
abused and in many instances, violated. It
is the view of the PGF that reconciliation,
founded on the principles of forgiveness
with governments demonstrating a strong
commitment to break away from the past
culture of infringements must form the
foundation of a new Nigeria.
Together with our party leadership, we wish
to reaffirm our unflinching commitment to
move Nigeria forward. The nation cannot
continue to be run the way it has been
since 1999; something must give. True, the
resilience of the Nigerian people has been
tested severally by the antics of a
government that has continually defrauded
the people at the ballot box, continues to
play politics with ethnic and religious
sentiments while proffering no solutions to
tackle insecurity, poverty and
unemployment, yet, it is not the people, but
this government that must give way.
After fourteen (14) years under democracy,
our electoral system has continued to be a
major source of national disappointment.
The elections in Delta and Anambra have
clearly rolled back the small progress that
was recorded in Edo and Ondo states. With
state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno
and Yobe and the declaration by INEC that
it will not be able to conduct elections in
those states, democratic rule in the country
is under threat and all democrats must rise
to the occasion and save our democracy.
Our national economy has crashed to a
level that is hardly explainable with
reference to all rational economic theories.
The common scorecard shows a nation that
is efficient in mismanaging unmatched
resources and wanton profligacy.
Reversing this trend is not a mission that
any group can accomplish alone. It requires
the support of Nigerians. It is a difficult task,
but we are confident that with your support,
we shall seize the initiative and return
Nigeria to a land where votes count, and
where government will be accountable to
the governed.
As Progressive Governors, we hereby
restate our commitment to make all our
states models of good governance with
records of rapid human development and
progress founded on the principles of social
democracy in line with provisions of our
party constitution and manifesto. In 2014,
we shall take all the necessary steps to roll
out programmes that will facilitate
development of synergy, experience
sharing and collaboration by all
progressive states.
Once more, the Progressive Governors
Forum felicitates with all Nigerians this
festive season and reiterates its
commitment to the advancement of
democratic rights and freedoms while
putting in place genuine programs to tackle
insecurity, fight crime, and destroy all
vestiges of corruption. This would be the
basis of our programs for massive
infrastructure project that would create
jobs, stimulate economic activity, reduce
inequality and diminish poverty.
A Merry Christmas to all Nigerians and a
prosperous New Year!
