Rain water overwhelmed drainages and rose to fill up the streets presenting a sight that was not only harrowing to the commuters but also a huge embarrassment to the city authorities who for long had been hawking the claim of building a mega 21st Century city.
ARTICLE | JUNE 19, 2011 - 4:25AM | BY SYLVA IFEDIGBO

Friday 17th June 2011 witnessed what could be termed the heaviest down pour yet of this year’s rainy season in Lagos. It probably signaled the first of many more to come based on the predictions by meteorologists at the beginning of the year.

The rain which began just at dawn was heavy and windy in some parts preventing most Lagos residents from venturing out of their homes to work and their various businesses. Residents who braved it out stood at bus stops and road junctions for many hours under the down pour to board vehicles which were in scarce supply. The few bus drivers who were on the road used the opportunity to make quick profits, hiking transport fares as the demand far outweighed the supply.

Because of the peculiar residential pattern that sees most Lagosians living on the Mainland and working on the Island where most of the businesses and corporate organizations have their offices, thousands of people were stranded in the Obalende and CMS areas of the city. These are the popular bus terminus for Lagos Island bound commuters.

Given the circumstances, the most sought after means of transportation were the commercial motor cycles (okada). However, like the buses they too were in limited supply and also astronomically increased their prices per ride. A ride from Obalende into Victoria Island which normally goes for N200 went for as much as N1000 with already drenched commuters falling over each other to hitch the available rides.

The hike in okada fares was however not just because of the increase in demand. It was largely due to the most difficult terrain which the bikes had to ply through. Not only were the routes into Victoria Island and Ikoyi clogged with cars in a gridlock; most of the area was heavily flooded.

Rain water in what has now become a perennial occurrence in Lagos had overwhelmed the often clogged drainages and had risen to fill up the streets and roads presenting a sight that was not only harrowing to the commuters but also a huge embarrassment to the city authorities who for long had been hawking the claim of building a mega 21st Century city.

There was hardly any route that was not affected in the Business District. Ahmadu Bello Way, one of the major roads in Victoria Island was so flooded that only four wheel drive vehicles could brave it. Many cars got stuck, others were simply submerged.

The waters were so high that there was no differentiation of where the roads or the gutters were so many unsuspecting drivers in their desperation drove their cars right into ditches. Commuters had to alight and wade through the pools which in some areas got to the waist level. All around was a tale of anguish, desolation and a clear indictment on the infrastructure managers of the city.

For much of Friday, besides having their staff turn up very late for work, many businesses on the Island could not open as they battled to evacuate pools of water from their premises, some from right inside their office buildings. Workers could be seen standing around the front of their offices with their trousers folded to their knee scooping out water or assisting in redirecting the flood so that they could gain access into their premises. As harrowing as it was, the situation also generated some excitement with many people taking shots with their cameras and making shot video recordings obviously for upload on social media.

While the Friday rain and its aftermath may have gone for now, one wonders how many more of such episodes there would be in future as the rains begin to gain momentum. Many residents are already convinced it would be a very difficult year if something drastic is not done.

There is also the claim that the ongoing construction of the Eko Atlantic City is having an untoward effect on the rest of the city especially Victoria Island as water from the ocean is being forced backwards into the hinterland following the obstruction to its downstream course into the Atlantic occasioned by the construction work. This some believe will lead to more cases of flood as the rainy season progresses as residents of areas on the bank of the Atlantic already complain of usual high water levels. The veracity of this claim is yet to be substantiated.

As the experience of Friday takes up a page in the book of absurdities that Lagosians keep in their minds, it is important that the State Government and other responsible agencies look critically into this matter before the next episode which could be of more disastrous dimension. We would recall the heavy flood experienced last year in parts of Lagos and Ogun states and we call on all concerned to consider this a top priority and get the drainage channels working as no city can lay claims to that name in this age if common gutters do not work.

op you mean the moors of medieval europe? yes we know about it. not sure about england but iberians(spanish and portuguese) ,italians and irish have moorish ancestors.

its one of those things you have to go to europe and learn for yourself , they dont hide it but they wont publicize it to the world either, most families still have their flags and symbols and they have moorish festivals where they all paint themselves to resemble black people.

Most of those crimes were carried out by Yorubas/Igbos in the Southwest.

And nobody with a right sense of mind could compare the overly subtle nature of the SW to the roudy nature of the SE.

When was ACN exporting violence over election? Dont get ACN confused with the nonsensical post election violence that was going on in Imo state, SE Nigeria.  that was
in lagos yes but in ekiti and oyo state no

is it not the same ekiti state you and f stranger where boasting of how you kill igbo traders to make other be afraid and go back to the east, the same SW where fulanis and yorubas have been fighting bloody battles, the same south west where igbo traders where kidnapped infact the ones in the east had to write letter to the authorities in the SW. i dont blame you ,you dont even know what nigeria looks like, better go and find a boyfriend and stop arguing with men on the internet.

SW is the most terrible non muslim part of nigeria

corpers are raped by even their traditional rulers
the same southwest where dead bodies of youth corpers are found

the same southwest where women are raped constantly especially by pastors

the same southwest last month nurtw were killing themselves over nothing  about 20 people died mostly innocent civillians

the same south west that are exporting election violence with their ACN party to every part of the country, look at pots calling kettle black , stupid people.

lagos is the most crime infested state in nigeria and ekiti is known for its election violence

calabar tops the list followed by enugu. i would have added lagos island but theres nothing romantic about traffic jam, others are ikom, jos(before the riot) ,owerri.

makurdi is too hot ,lokoja is too underdeveloped  ibadan and abeokuta needs serious updating , no need to include any northern city cus being lynched like a cow is not romantic to the best of my knowledge.

i didnt include abuja, ph and lagos mainland cus they are sin cities with streets filled with prostitutes and opportunists

i happen to be light skinned and i get approached by ladies all the time especially whenever i travel to lag and abj cus we have more light skinned guys like me in the east so its no big deal there , they call me all sorts of names like yellow pawpaw, tomato jos, akwa nwa ,ajebo ,fresh boy they don't even wait for me to do the toasting before they jump on my bed , i think Nigerian girls have this mentality that light skin guys are rich and are ajebo even though some may prefer dark skin men all ladies want their children to look light skin and ajebotic. for me i don't look at a girls colour am attracted to all as you can keep up.
