Home » News & Reports » News Tension As Policeman Shoots Driver in Onitsha…Hoodlums Attack Hausas Posted: February 9, 2012 - 15:14 Bus driver killed by police From Okodili Ndidi, Onitsha The fragile peace in the commercial city of Onitsha was yesterday disrupted as residents took to the streets in protest of the killing of a bus driver suspected to be a member of the Movement of the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) by policemen in one of the illegal checkpoints. According to an eyewitness account, the incident occurred when driver of a coaster bus with registration number AA 768AHD, simply identified as Edwin, escaped a checkpoint by ABS junction, and was pursued by one of the policemen who caught up with him and deflated his tires and subsequently shot him on the neck, killing him instantly. The conductor of the bus, Samuel Ekwueme, who was weeping profusely, said that the driver, gave the policemen N20 which they refused and insisted that he should give them N50, “my oga said that he had paid in the previous trip and drove off but we did not know that one of them was following us on a motorbike and he intercepted us and shot my oga on the neck and quickly escaped”. It was gathered that another passenger in the bus sustained bullet wounds when the trigger happy cop opened fire on the bus before he escaped. The situation however took a dangerous turn when the angry mob comprising of drivers and okada riders, went on a rampage with the corpse of the driver , attacking Hausas and looting their shops in possible reprisal. The bus was said to be fully loaded with passengers who took off from Nkpor junction and was heading to the Ose Main market, Onitsha when the incident happened as the passengers scampered for safety. One of the passengers who gave her name as Ifeoma Obi told The Nation that the deceased did not do anything that warranted his murder, adding “its was just pure wickedness on the side of the policeman who because of just N20 wasted this young man’s life” She also said that when the policeman first shot at the tires of the vehicle, the deceased who was the driver could not move again, a situation she said helped the killer cop to shoot at the deceased from closed range, shattering the glass of the vehicle. However, the situation took an ethnic coloration as drivers and other hoodlums in the commercial city went on rampage demanding the elimination of Hausa people on the ground that the policeman who shot the deceased was a Hausa man. The situation also escalated when the angry mob descended on the police team earlier sent by the Anambra state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhtari Ibrahim to reach and appeal to the rampaging crowd which led to the policemen retreating to avoid further casualties. It was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Central Police Station, Mr. Abdul Yusuf escaped death by the whiskers when the angry mob descended on him when he led his men to the scene of the incident. The angry mob also went on the rampage in different parts of the commercial city hunting for Hausa people who led to many of them taking refuge at the Central Police Station, CPS and other police stations within the city, with many others around the Bridgehead crossing over to Asaba, the Delta state capital. Reacting to the Development, the new Igbo leader, Chief Ralph Uwazurike advised the members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB not to touch any Hausa people buts should dismantle every police check points within the area with immediate effect. According to Chief Uwazurike who spoke through his second in command, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, the dismantling of all police check point became necessary at a time when the safety of Ndigbo is no longer safe even in their land. “ For a Hausa policeman to kill an Igbo driver here because of mere N20 shows that the policeman is a Boko Haram member but we have urged MASSOB members to leave Hausa people alone because they are not our problem, they should concentrate on dismantling all police check points within the area” he said. Meanwhile when contacted, the Anambra state Police Commissioner, Mr. Muhtari Ibrahim said the killer cop had been arrested and will soon undergo orderly room trial and prosecution and called on the rampaging crowd to calm down as efforts to resolve the matter had commenced. sahara reporters |

IBB's RIOT ACT - Prof Nur Alkali I believe that IBB's patriotic stand on Nigerian Unity and the re-affirmation of the "doctrines" of Nigerian nationhood should be taken seriously by those who think it is just a walk over to dismember this country. Those in the forefront of the various clandestine activity as reported in the media on daily basis which have enraged the General and Nigerians from all parts of this country must know that they represent no one but themselves. No military General retired or serving with his right senses will sympathize with the call for a break up of this nation. IBB, reading the riot act is not only one of those Generals but was also a former President who ruled this nation for 8 years. Prior to this he was in the battle front of the Civil War, and was in the forefront of the fight that brought down the stupid attempted Orkah coup. He along with others crushed it and brought back sanity into the nation. Our elite and particularly the media should not make the matter of national disintegration a mere joke. It will be resisted from all sectors of this country. The criminal silence of those who should have come out to condemn the threat against Nigeria's Unity should be considered an abdication of responsibility which in itself is treason. Nigeria will forge ahead and her detractors will regret ever having to go into any misadventure. I believe what we have before us now is a "riot act" and those who think they can create dissension in Nigeria at this time in point should go back to school, (their ages notwithstanding) and read more history. No doubt statesmen like IBB are shocked that such irresponsible talks like, bloodshed, war and breaking up of the country are happening in a Civil democratic rule which should transform our nation into a united strong virile and stable country. When his elder colleague and comrade in arms General Yakubu Gowon was once told during the Biafran Civil War about arms build up by the rebels he said "it is not the gun that matters but the man behind the gun". He along with other Generals most of whom are still alive crushed the rebellion and the rest is now a matter of history! General Murtala Mohammed's 200 days rule had sent in a shockwave across the nation warning that Nigeria was an indivisible and indissoluble nation state. General Buhari's riot act was on indiscipline, corruption and all acts meant to destabilize Nigeria. He must have been in politics hoping that Nigeria will free herself from the bondage of militancy and criminals. IBB giving out this riot act even as a retired General has declared he would go out to war again if such threats exist. The list of those who would join him on this patriotic mission from all corners of Nigeria is endless. It simply means that those who decide to ride the tiger's back on a misadventure like the dismemberment of Nigeria, will end up in its tommy. Civil Democratic rule is not about absolute freedom even at the cost of the unity of the nation which the "Riot Act" says (and every patriotic Nigerian should agree) is a settled issue. Unfortunately the whole issue revolves round the subject of "resource control" which was raised at the National Political Reform Conference (NPRC) of President Obasanjo and was thrown out by overwhelming vote of about 75% of members. The Conference itself lacked credibility as the motive came to be known to everyone on the street and the report with 186 sound recommendations dumped in the National Assembly by the then President. The people from that part of Nigeria who continue to advocate the dismemberment of this nation should watch carefully the implication of being misled into a crisis that they cannot control and will eventually regret. They (particularly their most vocal few) who parade themselves as leaders of their communities are most ungrateful and inconsiderate of how they benefited from the Nigerian nation State. Talks about war, bloodshed, ethnic conflicts should be regarded as treason and meant to plunge the ordinary Nigerian into regrettable consequences. These are simply based on greed, misadventure and misjudgement. Building a false scenario of plots of assassination of leaders and politicians, creating emotions and incitement of citizens is dishonesty, irresponsibility and even madness, real madness of the naked man dancing in the middle of the market. It can't work. Go back to build, save and develop your nation - Nigeria. In a nutshell this is what the "Riot Act" means. BY Prof. M. Nur Alkali, con, fhsn, fimc University of Maiduguri from elrufai facbook page |
Onlytruth:yeah but its more risky to import from lagos you might end up loosing your goods on the terrible high ways ,the issue is that most importers are not aware of it , the ones i work with just got to know about it early last year and since then they have never step foot in lagos again cus at the end of the day you spend more money going to lagos on other logistics and insurance plus bad roads and bribe and wait time. |
Onlytruth:i dont even think most of them are aware they exist, i also heard clearing is more expensive in ph port but faster and not all shipping companies operate there |
Onlytruth:a lot of importers especially from aba and ph use the porth harcourt port i hope your aware of that |
