There are couple of factors that account for this. One such factor was called the "red mirage". It was spoken of and warned about quite extensively before the election, in terms of media preparing the country so bad actors wouldn't use it to sew distrust.
What is the "red mirage":
1.) Democrats pushed their voters to vote via mail in ballots before election day. Republicans usually vote in person on election day.
2.) In a lot of states mail in votes are counted after "in person" election day votes.
3.) So on election day, it may have looked like Trump had an early lead because the "in-person" ballots were counted first in some states. But when the mail in ballots are counted which weigh heavily Democratic a huge shift happens.
