Okay here's the thing, my friend manages a bank and her husby is just a Contractor. You know how these things are, money today, no money tomorrow.

Anyway, she started with giving her husby ALL the money but then he would go  . . . 'why should you buy gold? Why should you buy a car? Why should you wear designers'? . . .  It's actually really frustrating because on her own she can afford these things and even as a family, they can afford these things on her income. But husby still has a 'poverty mentality' and the kind of job she does dictates that she maintains a specific class.


So that was when the troubles started! So how can she handle this without coming off as proud!

ujujuoan are you mistaking a modest spender for "poverty mentality".   i personally won't want my wife dressing as if she borrows from alao akala jewelry collection.   some people just aren't spenders.  

by the way what job is this that requires class aside from dressing professional and acting properly in front a client.  this may be a case of showing off but i won't judge too fast.

Most of us who grew up in Africa were raised in a situation in which the male is the 'provider'. At times it is actually the female but most people do not know depending on how the couple carry themselves. My mom made more than my dad back in the 80s but it was not obvious. . . we really did not care our needs were met without arguments.

This is why it can be hard for both husband and wife when the tables are turned. I remember an Oprah show where the wife (white, southern) left the man with her three kids simly because he lost his job and couldnt provide for the family anymore. The woman said she was raised to believe the man should be the provider . .she couldnt handle it when the husband could not anymore.

So, it is not just a black thing. Some whites think that way as well.

why not? it's her money right.

i personally would encourage such entrepreneurial or investment skills in my wife as long as she doesn't keep it from me.

it also makes divorce proceedings easier. you leave with what's in your name 

we may have a joint account for the bills but what's yours is yours and what's mine is mine.
