Culture / Re: At A Crossroad- Should I Remain In America Or Come Back To Nigeria by bbdd: 4:10am On May 07, 2017
apache77:
This gon’ be quite lengthy

I have been in America, 5months plus 0now. I came on a Visa- B1/B2, but I came particularly to establish residency here. I am still within my i94- meaning, I have not overstayed yet, I am still legal and considering whether I should remain and forge ahead or go back before I fall out of status. Once I do- in next 30days, there’s no turning back.

Now, like I said, I wanted to establish residency here- the marriage route- probably fall in love, marry, get my green card, citizenship and enjoy the American dream, but now, am not too sure again. Life here is tough mehn, and atimes, I keep wondering if I should not just go back to Nigeria, and I am really tempted to pack it all up and go back.

America is not easy, at all, damn. It is one of the most difficult places to live. But at the risk of making it look like this is a hell hole, lemme quickly say that it is not that bad.

I started driving 10days after I got here- I bought a car (car no cost for this land, with $1000 I got a reasonable at the Auction) and go about where ever I want- I have never had cause to enter a bus or even train in this land.

Even before I bought a car, my friend used to come take me anywhere I wanted, once he was off work. I have a license too and where I stay, within the city, I sublet a room for $500 a month, in a 3bedroom apartment with one or two other guys I knew from home. Nothing fancy, just okay.

I still manage to TurnUp at the club (Naija or Akata Club) every Friday and can at least afford rail drinks for $10 or so- patron marguaritas, Tequilla, and draft beers for $5. At all at all na hin bad pass. I manage to take girls out for outings too where I can afford to buy them Quesadillas fajitas, crab cakes for $25 or $30 and run a tab upto like $60 or $70. Once in awhile. that is.

I got a minimum wage job at $9 an hour, 40hour week when I came but after two months, I couldn’t stand it and changed jobs. I was getting about $72, tax free but gave them notice of termination, a month ago- I was tired of their crummy job (lol). They knew I was working without authorization, through an agent and were probably thinking- where’s he gon go?’

But I did and at my new job now I earn double that and started a 2nd job last week where I earn similar pay. If I keep at it, am prolyl netting $300 a day or say about $5,000 a month (working from 10am to 12midninght, both jobs). Though I don’t have a wife or kids, I don’t know if this is the life I want at 36.

My friends have told me to hang in there, America is not easy when you first come, but things will improve. But when? With this clock in, clock out? I can’t even save, so I can’t even ‘do that iyawo thing’ (moderator, make una no vess) nor can I even get a girl and love her up soooootay I nudge her up to the altar (am I being too much in a haste?) after which, with my IT certifications, I can be getting $40 or 45 an hour.

But this not even about money- this land is a strange society, everything is inverted from what we know in Nigeria. You can make all that money and not still be happy. I’ll be happier driving a tokunboh car in Nigeria that a mint new car from a dealer on the Interstate 5 in Cali or I85 in Atlanta, with car notes to boot.

But then, was my life really that okay in Nigeria? Well, up to a point it was- till the last 18months when things got so bad I couldn’t even pay my rent. I was thrown out of my house and moved into an uncle’s empty flat, never earned a dime within that period and had to actually sell my offroader (jeep) and other belongings to fund my American journey. If I got 10k or 5k within that period, somone gifted me that money.

But with power of hindsight now, I was still happy, with people, with family, going to crowded markets, beer with friends in the evening, that sense of community and better weather(which I hated then anyway) And its not like I just woke up and relocate to America o, I have been visiting, but meeehn, the reality of living here is way different than visiting, and it seems I never even knew America.

So question now for my brothers and sisters- help me make a decision, and I have just a month to make this- should I go back to Nigeria or rough it out here? In this land that the girls even doing shakara for yo are these fat, obese overweight akata girls with three children? All wielding section 8 vouchers and food stamps, calling you with free goverment phone ala obama phone, or getting tax refunds from their w2 from care jobs. When you left sweet sweet girls in Naija dying for you, even when you couldnt afford fish for them?

In this land where english is a problem, as they cant understand your accent- where you always hear: say that again? You dare not do a phone interview, cos of your accent and your where your best bet is pushing for a one on one interview via mail, with the hope your appearance will make them overlook your accent. If they judge akata by skin color, they judge you by skin color and accent.

Where you cant even get a reasonable job till you show work authorization. In this land with brutal winters, where you cant get rich, just comfortable, but where you have all the basic amenities of life and security

Help a brother, and others hell bent on coming to America

You made some excellent points
However, there is something you need to think about....In 10 years time looking back what decision are you likely to regret?

In Nigeria, a life of mediocrity is almost assured barring a divine intervention unless you enter the cabal. Here, you can live a good life and strive for better

It's not easy anywhere. However, I do have to say you have to think through the marriage thing. E NO EASY LIKE THAT.
Goodluck

Hi guys, i have a very big issue right now, my school stopped giving out CPT to international student, this was an issue from the department of nursing, so i decided to go ahead and work with a firm that deals with people with developmental disability, but the issue now is that, i worked with them for 1 month and they started asking for my green card even after i have submitted my social and drivers licence, so i decided to quit, but they have been calling for it. i told them i dont have it, the HR said she is going to report that to the DHS. I am just confused, i dont know what the result might be. i need help.
has anyone ever been in this kinda situation before?

Jisos! You started work without CPT clearance?? Nigerians una get mind o. KAI!!

I don't understand how anyone an take such a risk. If it's a backwater restaurant job in a sanctuary city in California, no one cares but corporate entities are neckdeep in legal and procedural protocol. You should NEVER EVER LIE

Anyway, If you're lucky, the company MAY ignore it because they don't want to draw the DHS's attention to the fact that they employed someone that was not authorized to work which will result in loss of millions and possible litigation due to one single reason
: they violated the 3 day rule that was enacted in the 1980's. Every employee must produce an authorization to work within 3 days of starting work. Heck most companies ask for it on the first day. Possibly, the cost of outing/reporting you to DHS is not worth the trouble of being on DHS's radar because of the current political environment.

Just call your pastor in Nigeria to begin prayer and fasting. Maybe that will help. wink
Actions have consequences afterall.

P.S THIS IS WHY THE REPUTATION OF THE SCHOOL MATTERS, DON'T JUST PICK A SCHOOL FOR THE SAKE OF COMING TO AMERICA. PICK A SCHOOL THAT GIVES YOU A FUTURE!!

Nigga was spending like a toddler. The internet package says it all. He was just paying like a kid.

As in.
$56 a day for car rental. That number was so ridiculous that I googled car rentals from Denver Airport and it's like $15/day for a nice Hyundai Accent of Nissan Versa and if you stay for a week you get a bulk deal of like $70/5 days.

Good day Guys,

It

Return ticket to Denver = $586
Rent= $900/month, paid 2 months = $1800 (1 bedroom apartment close to bus station and grocery store. Most importantly, very close to Wing Stop, lol)
Cable & Internet- 150mbps (Comcast) = $99.99/month + $100 deposit since we didn't have SSN= $199.99
Power= Got this setup but expecting first bill in the mail in Sept. forecast $40/month
Security Deposit = $200
They had to do background check before signing the lease= $100 for the both of us (Never heard of this in Canada)
Stayed in Hotel on the first day = $135 + $12 parking + GST
Wifey registered for 3 courses which cost = $7500 ($2500 per course)
Health Insurance= $2660 for one year
Car rental= $56/day for 9 days, used EZ Rental = $504 + GST
House furnishing, student style which includes couch, tv, bed frame, mattrass, etc = $1800
Walmart shopping which includes grocery, pillow case, microwave etc = $386

Total expenses for the 9 day welcome trip cost roughly $15k

You spent wayyyy too much. I chalk it up to not being aware of the US system.
First wages are higher in the US and prices are higher.
Regarding your itemized expenses.

RENT : $900 is way too much. Most colleges have helped apartment complexes that are occupied by students. Look around well and you'd definitely find
something cheaper in a big city like Denver.

Cable and Internet : $199 is also outrageous.
I pay $35 for a solid cable package from playstation and my Internet is included in my rent. A lot of housing places have Internet in their packages and this is becoming the norm. If you visit Comcast website, they have loads of cheaper offers. I don't know about the deposit. Either way, if you have to pay a deposit, you'll get the money back.

School fees and insurance : American education is expensive and American health care is expensive. Bernie Sanders anyone?

If you looked around you would have found better cheaper deals on most of the things you listed above.

Overall, in the US, the pay justifies the expenses.

Considering the new developments and hick in data. I hereby inform you that these are the new things I will be doing now.
1. No more clicking on snake threads, Davido baby mama threads, toke makinwa threads and wizkid threads.

2. No more 2 pages on any thread. Once my comment is not on the first 21 posts no need to comment. Someone else already said what I wanted to say

3. Replying of mentions has been strictly ignored. If you like abuse me from now till next year. I am saving data

4. I will not like your comments again. No matter how solid you sound I will not waste 1kb to like your comment no I will just nod my head. That is a proof I like your comment

5. No more alternatives. If I get banned that is it

6. Most of nairaland mods will not ban again. They need traffic and a lot of people will not be online. It will be stupid to ban those available.

7. No more clicking on threads with pictures. If you like give me a thread on how to make 1million and put pictures. I will not click.

8. I will do background restrictions. No need for pop ups. If I don't want notifications they don't need to come up. In fact no more Instagram, Facebook, Skype, snapchat, tingo, tinder, IMO. I am ok with whatsapp alone. Too much of everything is bad

9. I will only come online in the morning and night. To check and reply messages of last night. Then to reply messages the next morning.

10. No more clicking on links. If you create a thread then you said "click here" God will judge you

This is why Nigeria cannot move forward
Instead of you guys to fight this law, all youths can do is to make jokes about it.

Hardly you'll see Nigerians here spend like this. Naira to dollars would still be ringing constantly in their head, it would take a while to erase such. Stay away from alcohol, please don't ever drink and drive(3% alcohol or so in your system might lead to revocation of your visa as an F-1) if you're pulled over by a cop. DUI is a bad record, keep your record clean, and stay safe. If you're taking alcohol this summer, what then would you take during winter? Ethanol?

I still have advice for sureb0y, who is so carried away by pu**y. He'll land himself a rape or assault charge if he doesn't thread carefully. Two Nigerians in my school so far have been landed with rape and assault charge. After long battle they survived it, the other later was dismissed for plagiarism.

[b]I think a lot of new students need to be told things like this.
People this is NOT NIGERIA.
Everything has a log, everything is traceable. You have to be careful in this society. F1 visa your name is written in pencil; more so if you are on a generous stipend and funding.

Have fun , don't get frivolous or stupid.
Don't do black lives matter with your friends. When police use DigitalID to tag your face, there won't be an attorney to represent you.
Don't get into a fight or altercation. Be the bigger person and walk away.
Never harass people of the opposite sex.

Get educated about tax system and tax codes in your state of residence especially to people in the south where the taxes are lower.
Learn about federal tax returns.
Learn about the credit system here
Learn about cheggs buy cheaper books online.
Wikibuy to get cheaper deals on amazon
Look for good deals on rent. Never be in a rush to sign a lease until you have heard from people living there about utility costs. In the winter time this can be really.
People living in small dead towns, get a circle of friends but don't depend on people too much.
That thing called sensitivity? Throw it away!! You have to man up and be tough because you will need to learn to stand strong and be yourself even if people profile you racially.
INDEPENDENCE HERE IS NEVER OVERRATED.

FINALLY
Naija people here aren't like nairalanders. Make a few Nigerian friends but we wary of fraudulent characters. Anyway very soon everyone will be too busy to even check nairaland.

Yes, I never thought Brexit would happen because the atmosphere when I made the prediction wasn't really on steroids until about a month to when people voted. Most of the people regret voting Brexit now, anyway - and even Boris Johnson who led the charge has caved in and he's begging the EU for more concessions, in place of Brexit.

As for Jeb, that was at the beginning because I never gave Trump any chance whatsoever. And Trump stole Jeb's votes. Elimination by substitution.

I just saw the two states where Trump got 0% votes among black voters. They are Ohio and PA.

However, he has 43% of white votes compared to Hillary's 33% in Ohio, while both have 40% each among white voters in PA.

So, with the 10% gap differential in Ohio, the black votes there are inconsequential since blacks only make up 13% of the state's population, apart from the fact that a lot of them won't be eligible to vote - most of them won't even bother to vote. Even with Obama, those who voted weren't even up to 60% of the eligible voters. They will be lucky if 40% of the eligible black voters vote this time around.

Guy
This is the first poll post trump convention tht has a bounce. Na wa o
So many polls have been released over time and all have shown Hillary leads. Mind you I AM NOT A FAN. I am a staunch Bernie guy.

Why not leave all this pundit and prognostication bullcrap until september or at least until a CNN poll post DNC when the democrats get their own post convention bounce. Abeg calm down with this Trump will win thing. It's still a very tall order for him. All this analogy is rather pointless. Wake me up in september.

That's just posturing to appeal to the senses of far right groups. He's a businessman and he has toned down his rhetoric of late. Even someone as rabid as Newt Gingrich now supports black people against police brutality. Honestly, I don't even think Black Lives Matter is really about black lives, hence most black men don't support the movement. The leader is gay with a white boyfriend and the movement is funded by George Soros. That alone should tell you that it's another political liberal tripe to lead black people astray. No serious black person cares about BLM - they argue for black lives independent of the compromised movement.

They will get behind Trump soon. Scott Walker and John Kasich will deliver both states to Trump. Hillary has zero chance in those states, sorry. grin

Trump and Bernie are very similar albeit Trump is just a nutjob. And I believe a lot of Bernie's supporters will vote for trump.

Trump should win both Ohio and Wisconsin. And both Michigan and Pennsylvania will be very close. Trump should also win Florida with ease - most of the hispanics there are republicans and majority of them are Cuban Americans. So whatever xenophobic thing he said about Mexicans has nothing to do with them and a lot of them support his agenda. Hillary should win Virginia. I'll give Trump most of the swing states.

Anyway, my focus is primarily international politics, especially US foreign policy and perhaps how blacks in America would be treated. Trump seems like a better option because we all know what Hillary will do. She'll end up bombing more countries and use African Americans, while effecting more policies to destroy them like her husband did. Obama didn't do anything for AAs and I believe they need a president they can antoganise and force his hands to do something.

LOL.
And Trump that has emboldened far right groups, won't talk about black lives matter, keeps mouthing off about being the law and order candidate would be better for blacks?? lol. That's laughable

Now how does Trump want to win Wisconsin? He didn't even win the wisconsin republican primary.
Ohio is tough. Kasich didn't cometo the rnc convention in Cleveland.

Look the election is in November. I will pay atttention to polls in september. Anything you're seeing now is a post convention bounce.

The one thing no one can open his mouth to tell me is that as a black man, Donald Trump somehow represents me. I have see black people get beaten at his rallies.

Well, I've been saying this way before Trump got the nomination, after Bernie lost out mathematically. And Michael Moore also alluded to the same thing a few days ago.

Trump should nick one or two of these states: Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. And he should also win majority of the swing states, while maintaining a clean sweep of the red states, with the help of Pence. With white men around and Bernie's supporters still feeling slighted by Hillary, Trump is the next POTUS.

I'm very upset that Bernie was systematically cheated. I really love and support the guy BUT
The needful must be done. Everything depends on Bernie now. He has to plead to his supporters to come out. Without them, Trump wins this thing.

Still the electoral college strongly favors Hillary. Many people don't know American elections aren't about the popular vote but a handful of individual states decide elections.
of the states you mentioned, I can only see Ohio flipping but never Florida or Virginia. He needs three. Plus New Hampshire and Arizona. How e want do am? lol

Lol. Most people don't understand that yanks love people they can easily connect with, regardless of how erratic and crazy they're, hence Dubya was able to win two terms.

I don't even see Democrats winning back to back, especially with someone as disingenuous and fraudulent as Hillary. She's just too fake and she's a product of the establishment most yanks are tired of. I also don't think most yanks are ready for a female president, especially with how most white males are anti-feminist agenda these days. And once you look at what started the tea party movement and the role the movement played in reducing democrats to a minority in congress.

Trump should win majority of votes from white males. Most black voters won't votes because there's no love for both candidates and I doubt Hillary would win up to 80% of votes from the few that will vote.

Regardless, the swing states would be the deciding factor. Pence should give Trump the republican votes he needs. And the swing states could go either because that's middle America and they're the most patriotic. But I doubt most of them would want anything to do with Hillary based on her track record.

Hillary is 3rd world war waiting to happen. grin

I will remind you of this drivel on November 9th
