And you guys will be saying funding are available at those kind of schools like it's easy. You forget about how extremely competitive it is to get ordinary admission, let alone funding. Harvard, I know of very well. Their admission doesn't come with any automatic funding. Harvard will tap fingers to collect their money in full from you. My wife is a graduate of Harvard University, her student loan is super high. For real yo, ivy league schools are very very stingy with funds. In fact, most top schools are stingy with funds. |

ukemnseg: Hello everyone. I'm new here and I'm really glad I stumbled across this forum. I've just gone through some of the previous discussions and they've been really enlightening. Getting a US student visa from Nigeria seems to be even more difficult than getting admitted into a US school in the first place.
I have a few questions (for any one in a position to answer):
1. Does the school you're admitted to have any bearing on the success/failure of your visa application/interview. For eg. let's say I have an I-20 form from Harvard College. Would that 'guarantee' me a US student visa from Nigeria?.
2. Can anyone offer any 'specific' information on scholarships that can be applied for prior to admission to a US university (for Nigerian students). [I got 2280 on the SAT I, 770 (Math Level II) and 790 (Physics) on the SAT II].
3. Considering my 1530/1600 score on the SAT Verbal (CR+W), do I still need to take the TOEFL to impress the folks at the visa office? $180 is a lot of money and I'd rather not have my parents spend it if they don't absolutely have to. MIT and Harvard waived the TOEFL for me since I did well on the SAT Verbal, but I would still gladly take it if it would help with my visa application. I can't imagine being denied a student visa if I do get admitted to an Ivy.
4. And finally...in my application for a student visa (for undergraduate studies), does the bank statement I submit have to show funds sufficient to cover the total cost of attendance for all 4 years or for just the first year?
Thanks. Hello, Apply to three ivy league schools Three "New ivies" Stanford, Emory, Duke etc Apply to two safety schools that will surely give you full scholarship. Chinese and Indians will apply but guess what they have to be diverse in their admissions decisions so since you're black and you are clearly very bright, you stand a very good chance of getting in. Hopefully, other aspects of your application stand out as well. Goodluck. It's worth the shot. Why are you thinking of a visa now? Get admission first. |

imperiouxx: Imagine you spent your resources on me your employee to get the H1B/PR. Few months after I got a better paid job, do you think I will continue working with you or I move to the better job? Very true. Now, it seems there's a clause. If a company files for you and you don't stick with them and change jobs before they complete the green card paper work which can take 5 years, if you leave the job, the h1b application will be void even if you've worked 4.5years / 5. Once you leave the job, the new company has to restart the process. |

Fortissimo: Bro thanks a lot. The school is MS State in Starkville and they're the only ones that have responded with a fully funded offer. Let's see how the coming weeks go sha. I'm still eyeing PhD offers from Tulsa and UNR. Looking forward to your mail, bro. Cool MSU! It's a solid place man. I've been to Starkville it's a nice town. Low crime, maybe a bit boring. What's unr? Tulsa is in Oklahoma. Almost the same thing. Farm states. Let me echo what Msnas said a few days ago. Funding is the key. If you get funding in Alaska. Go. Lol Studying without funding is hell. |

I hope they don't do magomago and convert to usd equivalent when I want to pay. Am I ignorant or is 300k for a flight from Lagos ng to jackson ms quite fair on qatar?
I'm still expecting responses from other schools so I may eventually not go to MS sha. Still weighing my options. I will advice you to come to MS. It's a great place to get a solid education and you can do whatever you want after school. . Forget about Jackson. That's two and a half hours away. However, If your school is in Jackson. But I believe if you are going there, just make up your mind to focus and be safe... Therez a reason you got admission and you decided to go there, just do your best You do realize that education and work are two different things right? Be focused and be safe ? Lol. Have you been to the south? You're in Nigeria analyzing the US. For the record, aside from Jackson which has unique problems, I don't see much of a difference between most southern states. Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee all look the same to me. You never come America and you're selecting state. Looooool. Don't always give advice when you've not experienced it it's just wrong. |

imperiouxx: lolz. I know, just asking. MS isn't promising after school except you live on can foods and join to group of most obese population in the US. Job prospect is less than normal. Crime in Jackson, the capital and the supposed largest city in MS is very high. I once visited Jackson for 5 days and the American friends there were wishing they are from another parts of the country.
However, be careful about where you're coming in north east. Cost of living is incomparable wtith what you're use to in MS. I've never been to Jackson. Lol. I'm actually closer to Memphis Tennessee than Jackson. It's cheap here, I must say. The stipends go far here and that's very good for student life. The thing is that there's a high African American population here and the difference between the quality of life of the two racial groups is very high. Sad but true Well, I'll do my time and bounce. I actually like the state in some aspects though. Maybe it's growing on me. |

240naija: As the nation's currency exchanges at N400 to the US dollar on Sunday, Billionaire business mogul has said that if the Buhari-led federal government consults him, he could restore the nation's currency to an exchange rate of N200 to one US Dollar within one month. Speaking on a Channels Television politics programme on Sunday, billionaire businessman and the Chairman of Capital Oil and Gas Services Ltd., Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, has advised the Federal Government to consult some Nigerians who can halt the free fall of the Naira which is affecting the nation’s economy. The Naira currently exchanges at N400 to the US dollar. The Publisher of The Authority newspapers, said that if the President Buhari-le federal government consults him, he could restore the nation’s currency to an exchange rate of N200 to one US Dollar within one month, thereby arresting the slide in the Naira which is virtually crippling the economy. The Chairman of Ifeanyi Ubah Football Club, however did not say how he was going to bring the Naira down to an exchange rate of 200 per dollar, but said the government could seize everything he owns if he failed to do this within one month, if given the mandate. Chief Ubah also affirmed that he was not involved in any way whatsoever in the $2.3 billion Dasukigate arms deal that involved the former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki, adding that he was not involved in the politics of contracts and has never done any government contracts, whether at the Federal, state or local government levels. "I am highly misunderstood, sometimes controversial. But I have never done any government contracts. I did not collect any money from Government; I do not have an oil block – and I have not asked for one. "I did not know Dasuki. TAN never received money from Dasuki or the People’s Democratic Party. We did what we did in the interest of the nation and for posterity.
"I’m a politician with a mind-set of making life worth living for the people, when issues seem to be getting out of hand. So TAN has no hand in whatever that has to do with the arms deal fund." He said following the controversies trailing the #Dasukigate, it has become necessary for him to extricate himself from allegations that himself and the non-governmental organisation, Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), were in anyway involved in the sharing of the arms deal money.

Anthocracy: Hello guys, I was offered admission into one of American's medical schools. The following documents were sent to me: 1. Admission letter 2. Entry VISA APPLICATION FORM 3. School Fees details for the first year. 4. Booklist 5. And document containing other documents that I need to submit for my VISA processing. I was told to pay complete school fees (US $ 25,200) through any of the means listed in the document to enable them process my VISA, but the issue now is that the finance is not yet at hand for now and I'm to start class on May 2. My question now is, is it possible to use that admission letter to process VISA by myself and travel and how can I go about it. Thanks, your opinion is highly appreciated. Just because of the sheer incoherence of what you posted, I looked up your profile.
In one post you said you graduated with medical lab science, in another post you graduated from delsu with computer science.
Now, you got admission to do medicine in the US. Before I even talk about the rigorous nature of us medical schools admission, the exams you have to write aren't readily available in Nigeria. How did you get admission without writing the exams??
Only you know the game you're playing, don't expect us to buy it. |

And abeg why 'oyibo pikin' go want set TA holder up for their own failure? @amanze15 Try to avoid giving advice based on a single experience and then generalizing it. It's morally wrong to say students try to set TA's up for failure. Why would they do that? Even if they did, doesn;t mean that's the way students behave everywhere in all schools in the US. Come on man. I been a TA , i have been an RA. I had fun doing both and i enjoyed it. Students were nice and courteous. Try to give advice devoid of your personal opinions because you risk biasing someone's experience. |

godG MsNas
I think a fundamental piece of the puzzle being left out of this funding debate is the actual credibility and INTELLECTUAL CAPACITY of the said person seeking funding
To future applicants, No school in the US is going to go all out to fund you if you don't show a very good intellectual capability. That goes without saying. Your test scores have to be good and every other aspect of your application has to be great as well. Also, ability to carry out research is important.I can say this most guys on nairaland who got funding didn't get their schools by typing "SUGGEST SCHOOLS FOR ME" here on nairaland. They actually went online and did some good research which pretty much forms the basis of a good graduate career. Ability to do research.
Also research your school!, check the weather(There are tons of apps to do this), diversity(if you care about that), cost of living, tuition fees. No one on nairaland can help you unless they are in the same school which is not so common.
Also, funding opportunities are most times given by the DEPARTMENT /PROGRAM and not as a school wide decision. Get in touch with the program chairs of the department you wish to apply to , write them an email. This is the first step.
If you need any help along the way, there are lots of guys here to give you a helping hand. Be it with SOP or logistics or just good ol' advice but please be capable of doing some research on schools and make sure you ace your standardized tests.
Bests to all applicants. |

LagosNIV: If he is really a student, he should have some degree of intelligence. And if that is the case, he should be able to look at a map. The further you get from the equator (i.e. north) the colder it gets...
And these are the same people that cry on Nairaland when they get refused visas because their stories don't make any sense! lol! Absolutely |

The only colder states I can think of are maybe North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Maybe Maine/Vermont. But yeah Wisconsin definitely ranks up there. I can't believe someone compared the weather up there with the south. That's plain ignorance. That guy is a troll don't feed him. |
