My problem is when you mention 'few days' and end up gulping 6 weeks without any sign of light, then people have the rights to start complaining. Haven't they been patient enough?
The problem exists because the state govt in their hurry, simply barged into PHCN installations without asking and issues arose. Its how quickly those gaps can be blocked that will determine how soon nomarlcy will return to the power situation in Rivers; but the Rivers govt has recognised were they went wrong and are working with PHCN to complete the upgrades to the grid.

It is too soon to praise anyone (Nigerians are always too quick to sing blessings) should rather give it a month to 2 months before concluding. Also these improvements are not across the country. Why haven't these improvements reached Rivers and Bayelsa. Never-the-less the govt is doing well, but still a long way to go.
Rivers has power problems because they are diverting power lines to Afam power station and upgrading the grid. They will have a better story to tell than the rest of the country in a very short while.

Thank God for GEJ.

@Beaf. You are silly indeed. If you think you are making sense you are better off jumping into the lagoon.
Every human on earth are gifted in one form or the other. How could you say Bill Gates is more brilliant than I am simply because he programs a computer while I can't. Am a fulltime structural engineer, can Bill Gates analyze structures better than me? Probably not. I ask again, is that how to measure brilliance? Besides kindly attach the source that says Bill Gates has an IQ of 140. Am waiting.
I wouldn't make sense to you dude and I seriously doubt that anybody else would too. You are just too stup!d, and thats what you should blame.

Of course the place is in darkness, but it is for positive and very well publicised reasons. Any clown could have looked the thing up on the web instead of trying to create rumours and bad news for the usual winshes to congregate around.

“Our network and generation points are standing alone, so we need to have a backbone to supply sub-stations. With what we are doing, we are trying to create a harmonious system to improve power supply. It is better for residents to face the current power outage for a few days and enjoy improved electricity supply for many years to come. We have been collaborating with PHCN on this, but basically, there are communication issues. I promise that the on-going work on Afam substation will soon be completed and electricity supply would be restored,” he said.
I don't think any of the above can't be easily understood.

I am quite sure Ikuforiji is the tip of the iceberg and there is a vast network of rot supporting Tinubu's pocket.

The worst thing is the way he has been obstructing the good work Fashola is doing, trying to kill the mans spirit by even flying in governors from other states to choose his commissioners. Why can't he allow Fashola to work, isntead of parasiting a whole 2billion per month with Alpha-Beta?

Blackout in Rivers as govt, PHCN disagree
Written by Bashiru Abdullahi, Port Harcourt Monday, 26 September 2011 00:00

Disagreement between the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and the Rivers State government has thrown the state into darkness.

The PHCN is accusing the Rivers State Ministry of Power of being responsible for power failure in the state by obstructing its reconstruction   work at the 132KV Afam-Port Harcourt line.

A PHCN official, who pleaded anonymity, said the state’s power plant situated close to Oyigbo area of the state has been interfering with their network, thereby obstructing the restoration of power.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Power, Mr. Augustine Wokocha, in an interview with Daily Trust also confirmed that the power failure in the state was as a result of the state government’s work on its Afam transmission lines. Wokocha however added that the government is engaging in a turn-in turn-out process to synchronize its networks   and generation points to ensure steady and sustainable electricity supply in the state.

The commissioner further said that he has the mandate of the  state government to provide  sustainable electricity  and that N25billion has been granted to the ministry   to stabilize 28 sub stations out of the N70 billion required to have sustainable electricity before the end  of next year. He said the state spent about N100 billion in the past eight years on electricity.

Knowledge is free, but many Nigerians willing choose to be id!ots, with their ignorance driving them to make the sort of statement that should never be heard in public and makes other Nigerians ashamed. The fools now wish to export their "drag them down" mentality beyond the shores of Nigeria.

The fools are actually claiming Bill Gates is not clever, but he has an IQ of 160, well above the scale for genius which stands at 140. What is wrong with some Nigerians that their low self-esteem makes them intinctively try to drag others down?

For the fools who say he never wrote code, this is an excerpt of how Bill Gates rose to where he is. When you finish reading, tell me if he couldn't write code and didn't have guts.

Phuckers. angry

BASIC

After reading the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics that demonstrated the Altair 8800, Gates contacted Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), the creators of the new microcomputer, to inform them that he and others were working on a BASIC interpreter for the platform.[30] In reality, Gates and Allen did not have an Altair and had not written code for it; they merely wanted to gauge MITS's interest. MITS president Ed Roberts agreed to meet them for a demo, and over the course of a few weeks they developed an Altair emulator that ran on a minicomputer, and then the BASIC interpreter. The demonstration, held at MITS's offices in Albuquerque, was a success and resulted in a deal with MITS to distribute the interpreter as Altair BASIC. Paul Allen was hired into MITS,[31] and Gates took a leave of absence from Harvard to work with Allen at MITS in Albuquerque in November 1975. They named their partnership "Micro-Soft" and had their first office located in Albuquerque.[31] Within a year, the hyphen was dropped, and on November 26, 1976, the trade name "Microsoft" was registered with the Office of the Secretary of the State of New Mexico.[31] Gates never returned to Harvard to complete his studies.

Microsoft's BASIC was popular with computer hobbyists, but Gates discovered that a pre-market copy had leaked into the community and was being widely copied and distributed. In February 1976, Gates wrote an Open Letter to Hobbyists in the MITS newsletter saying that MITS could not continue to produce, distribute, and maintain high-quality software without payment.[32] This letter was unpopular with many computer hobbyists, but Gates persisted in his belief that software developers should be able to demand payment. Microsoft became independent of MITS in late 1976, and it continued to develop programming language software for various systems.[31] The company moved from Albuquerque to its new home in Bellevue, Washington on January 1, 1979.[30]

During Microsoft's early years, all employees had broad responsibility for the company's business. Gates oversaw the business details, but continued to write code as well. In the first five years, Gates personally reviewed every line of code the company shipped, and often rewrote parts of it as he saw fit.[33]

IBM partnership

In 1980, IBM approached Microsoft to write the BASIC interpreter for its upcoming personal computer, the IBM PC. When IBM's representatives mentioned that they needed an operating system, Gates referred them to Digital Research (DRI), makers of the widely used CP/M operating system.[34] IBM's discussions with Digital Research went poorly, and they did not reach a licensing agreement. IBM representative Jack Sams mentioned the licensing difficulties during a subsequent meeting with Gates and told him to get an acceptable operating system. A few weeks later Gates proposed using 86-DOS (QDOS), an operating system similar to CP/M that Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products (SCP) had made for hardware similar to the PC. Microsoft made a deal with SCP to become the exclusive licensing agent, and later the full owner, of 86-DOS. After adapting the operating system for the PC, Microsoft delivered it to IBM as PC-DOS in exchange for a one-time fee of $50,000. Gates did not offer to transfer the copyright on the operating system, because he believed that other hardware vendors would clone IBM's system.[35] They did, and the sales of MS-DOS made Microsoft a major player in the industry.[36]

Gates oversaw Microsoft's company restructuring on June 25, 1981, which re-incorporated the company in Washington state and made Gates President of Microsoft and the Chairman of the Board.[30]

Windows

Microsoft launched its first retail version of Microsoft Windows on November 20, 1985, and in August, the company struck a deal with IBM to develop a separate operating system called OS/2. Although the two companies successfully developed the first version of the new system, mounting creative differences undermined the partnership. Gates distributed an internal memo on May 16, 1991, announcing that the OS/2 partnership was over and Microsoft would shift its efforts to the Windows NT kernel development.[37]

NIGERIA: President orders probe into campus violation
Tunde Fatunde
30 September 2011
Issue: 191

Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan has ordered a police investigation into an incident at Abia State University in which five students allegedly violated a female colleague, filmed the SinParty and posted it on the internet, sparking outrage across the country and abroad.

Information and communication technologies coupled with a new freedom of information act assisted in revealing that there have been many unreported cases of violation at universities.

Linda Ikeji, a graduate and journalist, posted a video of the incident on her popular blog. The news broke within minutes. French television station France 24 aired it, prompting angry reactions on its Facebook page, and human rights and civil society organisations unanimously condemned such debasement of womanhood.

Nigerians locally and in the diaspora, especially students and academics, sent messages of condemnation to the president via Facebook, demanding that the rapists be punished.

Jonathan ordered the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to step into the matter, and it conducted an enquiry. According to reliable sources, the commission confirmed the identities of the men and the student they violated.

The enraged president handed over the NHRC findings to Caleb Olubolade, Police Affairs Minister, and instructed him to further investigate the sordid affair and prosecute the offenders. Jonathan had to take this action because local authorities were reportedly unenthusiastic about getting to the root of the matter.

Abia State University Vice-chancellor Chibuzo Ogbuagu said a preliminary investigation by the institution found that no violation had taken place on the campus in Uturu, in southeast Nigeria, and that no students had been involved in violation. But he said he would cooperate with security agencies willing to look further into the matter.

Former student activist Carol Ajie, of the non-governmental organisation Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa, disagreed with the vice-chancellor's findings. In an article she disclosed the names and other identities of the five students and called on the police make use of documents at her disposal as credible evidence that may assist in the investigation.

She appealed to the university authorities to provide medical attention to the female student, who is reportedly in hiding and could be suffering serious injuries. Ajie said that the video indicated the students did not use condoms, and so the student also risked HIV infection.

"There is no hiding place anymore, for the police. The entire university community at home and elsewhere are watching how the police handle this matter," Ajie wrote.

She said greater access to information through the internet, Nigeria's freedom of information act and heated debates over the alleged violation involving former head of the International Monetary Fund Dominic Strauss-Kahn, had made it impossible for the authorities to sweep such incidents under the carpet and had emboldened Nigerians to insist on an investigation.

University authorities and agencies in Nigeria have been alarmed by a well researched article published in the national tabloid The Punch by Segun Olugbile, who described horrific cases of female students being sexually abused and the culprits escaping unpunished.

He claimed that male rapists are "admired" by their peers as heroes while the victims are objects of ridicule and disdain. The article reminds one of the historical novel Monne, Outrages et Defis by Francophone author Ahmadou Kouroma, which showed intimate abuse of women being perceived as "divinely ordained", normal and expected in a man's world.

In a sober article also in The Punch, Abimbola Adelakun wrote that she was not happy about the indifference over the alleged violation displayed by Abia State Governor Theodore Orji. Drawing on the dialectical theory propounded by Paulo Freire in his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, she opined that man is as much a victim of a despoiler as a woman.

The difference was how directly each was affected. "Fighting violation should therefore not be women affairs alone because we do not know whose daughter will be the next to have her body violated and posted on the internet," she wrote.

Power supply improves on 4300mw generation .
Friday, 30 September 2011 00:00 BusinessDay Staff

The sudden improvement in public power supply to Lagos on the back of unmatched gas supply to the thermal stations, could be one of the green shoots of the aggressive push by the government of President Goodluck Jonathan to address the perennial rot in the power sector, according to a BusinessDay investigation.

Those knowledgeable, trace the improvement to the rise in nationally generated power to 4,300MW.

The improvement in power generation at some of the power plants, has translated into significant relief for consumers across the country.

Some of the government’s power plants have been undergoing rehabilitation and this has significantly improved their generating capacity and it is expected that by the time these rehabilitation projects are completed, the country would witness further improvement in power supply.

The generation at Egbin power station has now stabilised and is consistently hovering between 987megawatts and 1,100megawatts (mw) as against between 500mw and 600mw, some months back .

Generation at Kainji hydro power plant, has also improved from 70 mw to 268 mw, while the plant at Jebba is running at full blast, supplying about 433 mw to the national grid.
Shiroro produces about 413 mw, AES 101 mw and Sapele 78 mw.

The others are Agip’s Okpai 400 mw, Afam6  270 mw, Delta 218 mw, Geregu 210 mw, Omotosho 46 mw, Olorunsogo phase one 38 mw, Olorunsogo phase two 120mw and Trans Amadi 22.5mw.

In addition to these, another 260 mw spinning reserve has been put in place. This is used for system stability.

Again, the stability in the system has improved considerably, said engineers at several of the power installation in the country, cutting the number of annual incidents of system collapse from the old level of 52.

The injection of funds into the distribution network has led to the replacement of old transformers, and cables are helping to ensure smooth supply of electricity.

C-don Adinuba, special adviser on media to the Minister of Power, says the current  achievement   as regards the stepping up of power supply supply, is the result of  improvement  in generation, transmission and distribution, through doing a quick fix on transmission infrastructure. He said: “The transmission infrastructures that have been problematic are currently being upgraded and modernised. We have also moved into distribution network and created a department of fuel -to –power that ensures prompt payment for gas supplied, which serves as feedstock to power plants.

Meanwhile, all may not be well on the home front of President Jonathan, as he gets set to declare his intention for the 2011 presidential race this weekend.

Apart from the rumoured division among the South-South governors over his ambition, Nigerian Tribune learnt from authoritative sources that top militant groups in the region may have joined forces with his rivals.

It was gathered that groups such as Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) and the Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC), are currently divided over Jonathan’s candidacy and the option of former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB).

It was learnt on Tuesday that some IBB allies had made contact with some former senior commanders of the MEND, who despite repenting from their former ways, still have a formidable voice in the politics of the Niger Delta.

The IBB associates were said to have made overtures to the ex-militants for their support.

THERE are indications that President Goodluck Jonathan is yet to strike a deal with leaders of key militant groups in the Niger Delta to strengthen his chances of winning the South-South zone if he decides to run in the 2011 presidential election.

Indications to this effect emerged in the light of efforts by leaders of the militants, who had given up on the government amnesty initiative  to engage presidential aspirants from the North in exploratory talks on how to fit into their presidential programmes.

Two leaders of militant groups which surrendered arms in the wake of the Federal Government’s amnesty had arrived in Abuja last week to hold talks with northern presidential aspirants, including General Ibrahim Babangida and General Muhammadu Buhari.

Nigerian Tribune learnt through aides of the aspirants that the militants complained that they were not being consulted by President Jonathan.

The militant heads were said to have canvassed a view that their full participation in the ongoing political process would enhance their resolve to finally discard the toga of militancy, just as they reportedly expressed dismay that their efforts to dissolve into the campaign programme of President Jonathan were not being appreciated.

It is not certain which specific roles the militants desired to play in the presidential campaigns of the aspirants, whom they reportedly met. However, it was disclosed that tentative agreements were reached by the campaign team of General Buhari that they should make a bold appearance during his inaugural campaign summit scheduled to take place in Abuja any moment from now.

Checks within the IBB campaign organisation revealed that none of the militant leaders was able to meet the Minna general in person, but reportedly met his aides in Abuja and told them about their desire to feature in his campaign programmes.

When the militants met with the representatives of the ex-president recently, Nigerian Tribune gathered that they vowed to support him if he agreed to a one-term tenure and hand over power to a candidate from the South-South geopolitical zone in 2015.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that Babangida was told to rescind his decision of handing over to a candidate from the South-East, choose a vice-president from South-South, implement the white paper of the Ledun Mittee committee and create additional states in the South-South geopolitical zone.

Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that the militants were working with notable South-South governors, who were said to be working underground for different northern presidential aspirants following their irreconcilable differences with President Jonathan.
why cant we just privatize PHCN and allow competent hands to manage the distribution which will surely save us from "appealing" to state governor to be paying their bills?

Bring on indepedent private power generating companies, give them assurance on their investment by making commitments and allow the market forces to determine the price, thus government can layback watch as a regulatory body making beautiful laws to support the system.
The privatisation process is already in full swing, but until it is completed states govts have to be responsible and pay their bills. IMHO, a way should be found to sanction them, maybe deduct the money from their monthly Abuja allocation.

Niger Delta Militants give Boko Haram 14 days to stop killing or face war

But they went to Abuja last year even after the amnesty programme to deny
Can they not do the same again?

MEND Denies October 1st Bomb Blast.

Ex-militant leaders under the auspices of Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta (MEND), excluding detained Mr. Henry Okah held a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan where they denied MEND’s involvement in Friday bomb attacks, saying that “with a password anybody can operate MEND’s email account.
How can one argue with those who don't even know the meaning of the prefix, ex?
There are ex-MEND militants because MEND is no more. Anybody using that name is a pretender, and as we have discovered, an aboki.

There is also no MEND email account, because that service was closed down. So please you supporters of boko haram and terrorism, carry your mantle yourself and stop being cowards who hide behind women. MEND never operated that way.

Those threatening to set off bombs are all aboki and as boko haram as can be. cool

For Lydia David, executive director at the Oregun based Edelyn Nigeria Limited, makers of Edelyn Shirts, power supply has also improved, forcing down their monthly diesel expense from N52, 000 to just over N13, 000.
Incredible progress and a very measurable benefit. By the Power of God, we will hit 24/7 power supply before 2015 or thereabouts.

In order to sustain and further improve on power generation, state govts need to learn to pay the bills. PHCN is owed a N100billion or more by the states.
