Politics › Jonathan Directs Dangote, Others To Crash Cement Prices Within 30 Days by Beaf(op): 2:03am On May 17, 2011 |
Jonathan directs Dangote, others to crash cement prices within 30 days On May 16, 2011 · In Headlines , BY DANIEL IDONOR ABUJA — PIQUED by the soaring prices of cement in the country, President Goodluck Jonathan, Monday, summoned the Chairman of Dangote Group, and other cement manufacturers with a directive to crash the prices of the product within 30 days period or face the wrath of the government. Presidential spokesman, Mr Ima Niboro, who announced Jonathan’s decision after a meeting in the President’s office, said the manufacturers had agreed to do all that was necessary to meet the one month time frame. According to him, his boss, Jonathan was saddened by the complaints of Nigerians over the sharp rise in the cost of the product and decided to call a meeting of the top five manufacturers to find a way out. At a post-meeting briefing the President of the Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, CMAN, Chief Joseph Makoju; Chairman of Dangote Group, Alhaji Dangote; Chairman of BUA Group, Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu and Country Manager of Lafarge Cement, Jean-Christophe Barbant assured Nigerians that the prices would come down before the deadline. Makoju told State House correspondents that both the President and the manufacturers had agreed to address the causes of the product scarcity and high cost as it concerned government obligations as well as what was required on the part of the manufacturers. “In addressing the causes, some of the issues are on our side as the manufacturers, some of the issues are on government side and I am very confident that over the next weeks, you will see the impact on the issue of supply and prices of cement,” Makoju said. African richest man, Dangote, said that the major problems the industry was facing were in the areas of supply of Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO) consumed by the industry and the loss of 6, 000 trucks by his group recently, adding that the recent post election crisis in the North which caused a short down of production for weeks was partly responsible for the hike in price. The African leading industrialist who announced that arrangement was being made by his companies to sell cement directly to retailers buying as little as one truck as part of moves to bring down prices, observed marketers were also capitalising on the increase in the pump price of diesel as they transfer additional cost to the final consumers. Dangote said, “the other issue is that of transportation. You know once there is an increase of N1 in diesels, transporters will take that opportunity and increase their charges. When you look at when we started producing cement at Obajana, cement for the first time became cheaper, it is still cheaper than the price of Lagos while this was not the case before now. “So you can see that we are doing quite a lot and I can assure you that in the next few weeks these prices will definitely come down,” he said. Dangote also disclosed that his organisation has ordered for 5, 000 additional trucks to ameliorate the problem of haulage of cement to all parts of the country saying “We are doing all that to try and bring down the cost of transportation but we will do it in such a way that it will not affect other transporters because we also need them in the business to survive. “Cement will definitely be exported, worst case scenario by first quota of next year, Nigeria should be earning a lot of foreign exchange and I can guarantee you that cement would be one of the major foreign exchange earners in the next few months to come,” he stated. In his contribution, the chairman of BUA Group noted that some of the challenges that caused increase in cement prices were being addressed some of which included the closure of Kaduna Refinery and cement companies based in the North which were closed as a result of the post election crisis. “There were challenges and some of them have been taken care of, namely the issue of LPFO. Kaduna refinery was out of production for some time but is now back on stream, and most of the companies located in the north like Ashaka cement, Sokoto cement, Benue cement rely entirely on LPFO. So, when Kaduna refinery had an issue a lot of companies were not able to produce and that have already been taken care of,” he stressed. The Country Manager of Lafarge Group, revealed that the meeting also agreed that there would be more investment in the cement sector to make the product more available and cheaper. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/05/jonathan-directs-dangote-others-to-crash-cement-prices-within-30-days/ |

Dotman01: . . . . so do you think pdp will choose someone from d acn (minority) to be their speaker?. . naaaah. . . . . so u think there is loophole for acn to exploit?. . . naaah. . .zoning is only a pdp thing. its neither a nigeria thing nor acn. 2mch has a very good perspective on the political scenery, unlike the almost crazy cult personality views that have been dished out by some (led by Gbawe). You do not do or say things for the mere sake of it. Surely GEJ can do without the SW, make no mistake about it. But he has chosen to have a big tent; the SW on the other hand, cannot do without the FG (not even Lagos) without totally collapsing in a few short weeks. We have heard wild stories of how Tinubu thumbed his nose at Obj's federal revenue, but it was only for 8 weeks and it was only money for local councils involved (although personality cult builders like Gbawe preach deliberate lies of how Lagos was entirely starved off FG funds): https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-302106.0.htmlWith the air cleared on that, we need to stop spreading nectar coated lies, snake oil and personality cult based secessionist babble, because very ugly paths are being trod. ACN in the SW is holding several meetings with PDP, I really can't fathom the need to lie about it and put up a holy self sacrificial jesus "I don't droppings" front. The reason ACN is attending those meetings is obvious, they need the FG and PDP is in control of the FG. I am all for the SW developing, making their own political choices (ACN, PDP APGA or whatever) and beating innovative paths to development (exemplified by Fashola). However, the danger of fascism and similar psychedelic viewponts is all too real and nothing could be more dangerous. |

Politics › Niger Delta Militants, John Togo Claim To Have 'surrendered' by Beaf(op): 12:41am On May 17, 2011 |
Nigerian oil delta militants say 'surrendered' (AFP) – 45 minutes ago LAGOS — A renegade militant group targeted in recent days by Nigerian troops in the southern oil producing delta on Monday said it had surrendered, but the military said it was unaware of such a declaration. The military last week said it was engaged in an operation to flush out the militants in an area of Delta state in the Niger Delta region. A spokesman for the group calling itself the Niger Delta Liberation Force (NDLF), said it had ordered its troops out of their bases and to prepare to lay down arms. The spokesman said the group's leadership had directed its militants to return "to their various towns and villages" and to "hand over unconditionally all NDLF weapons." The group has claimed responsibility for a number of incidents in the Delta, including attacks on oil facilities. On Monday it said bombs planted at oil installations in recent months had been "de-activated". A spokesman for a military task force in the region said it was unaware the group had surrendered. "We are not aware of any such declaration of surrender," Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Antigha told AFP. "There are internationally accepted procedures of surrender, and until they do that I don't know why we should take them serious." The group is believed to be led by notorious gang leader John Togo. "The (task force) is continuing in its bid to end the threat of banditry," he said. Last week Antigha accused the militants, who he estimated numbered between 70 and 100, of being involved in criminal activity in the area, including robberies at sea. A 2009 amnesty programme for Niger Delta militants was credited with bringing a sharp decline in unrest in the region that had long been hit by violence, but sporadic incidents continue to occur. Nigeria is an OPEC member and Africa's largest oil producer, but the Niger Delta remains deeply impoverished. The military operation followed last month's parliamentary, presidential and governorship elections in Nigeria that were viewed as a major step forward for Africa's most populous nation after a series of deeply flawed polls. President Goodluck Jonathan, who won the election, is the first head of state from the Niger Delta region. Togo was among the thousands of militants who signed up for the amnesty, but he later reneged on the deal and returned to criminality, according to the military. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5igDc55bvU8f0YXk7fMsdkS4I9zAg?docId=CNG.b8e248e01f0016c2b08efefe5b618571.1311 |

2mch: This is a PDP government, and they have decided to appoint the positions by zoning. That is their party's decision and the party choice, we will all go with it. What the man should be arguing is that, since they have zoned the position to the SW. The house should vote to decide which candidate to elect from the SW( PDP or ACN). When ACN gets the presidency, they can decide which way they want to appoint key positions. As of now, PDP maintains zoning, there is nothing anyone can do about it but go along and play their game. But play that game better than they expected. Demand ACN or PDP speaker from the SW. Meritocracy in Nigeria will come from simple steps such as these, not from antagonizing or cheating yourself out of government because you want to seem politically correct. All na shakara! They have already met several times with PDP to settle the speakership matter, but here Gbawe is, promoting a story he knows to be patently false. I don't see why Tinubu would do underground deals and then come out telling cheap lies. But, more can't be expected from the guy. |

kITA TITA: I find it difficult to dismiss the report considering the scale of violence unleashed on innocent Nigerians after the presidential poll in April. However, the report appeared without any attribution and almost verbatim in different media. It seems planted and could be another attempt by hangers-on to please Mr. Jonathan. It could have been manufactured by the same group that manufactured figures for him in South East and South South, in an election that he was poised to win without cheating. The same set of people may actually be carrying out the same mission they are accusing others of plotting. I think we should have outgrown all these by now. The whole world is civilizing and we are moving backwards, voting because someone comes from our locality and killing others when our candidate fails to win. You only ended up walking all over your own tongue. Sad for a grown up. If there is any further violence, would you feel you might have blood on your hands? This is no the time to make irresponsible statements. |

We nurture scumbags and celebrate them in our Country. There is no point , especially if you support a PDP politician, casting aspersions on the character of others . One would only end up looking like a thoughtless hypocrite because most Nigerians are aware that no entity celebrates and empowers the biggest "scumbags", murderers and gangsters more than the PDP in Nigeria. You got the bit in large font correct. Tinubu is a drug stained gangster who should be sharing a cell with Ibori. Gbawe: So we are to give more credibility to a speculative article as support for the idea of "backdoor deals" and clandestine "underground" partnering/alliances , knowing fully well those abound in Nigeria , ahead of the utterance of the ACN caucus leader in the lower house ? in any case , is the PDP , even with it's majority, not duty bound to try and seek the votes of minority reps transparently , as is allowed? One has to wonder why some folks , when the ACN is mentioned, automatically speak of "backdoor deals" and double-dealing as if there is no democratic civility at all in Nigerian politics.
It is amazing anyone with a logical mind can proffer that we use unfounded speculation, thrown around carelessly in Nigeria, against the direct utterance of an influential stakeholder. If this thread is a "fairytale" then I wonder what the article supplied to discredit it should be deemed as if not speculative garbage . Does influential stakeholder mean accomplice to a drug baron? Or one who serves under a drug baron with a "University of Toronto degree?" |

Crap. Unfortunately, this thread is just another fairytale. ACN has been doing backdoor deals with PDP: Zoning: ACN, PDP unite in search of Speaker •Main contenders shift lobby to venues of NASS retreat •As Sambo parleys Reps-elect, sells Jonathan’s new agenda Written by Taiwo Adisa and Idowu Samuel, Abuja Monday, 16 May 2011
THE battle for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives in the next National Assembly has taken an interesting turn in the South-West, following a series of ongoing consultations among members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the zone. The PDP had zoned the Speaker position to the South-West in line with the zoning pattern it instituted in 2007. Though the PDP failed to make much impact in the South-West in the 2011 elections, five of its members were elected into the House of Representatives from the South-West zone. Three of the five are ranking members who could vie for the top position in the House of Representatives. The ACN, which won a majority of the Reps’ seats in the South-West has 70 members in the House in the incoming session of the National Assembly. Although the PDP has a majority of the 360 members in the House of Representatives, winning 162 seats, whoever will win the Speaker seat must talk to and win votes of members of the opposition parties. Sources confirmed to the Nigerian Tribune that the leadership of ACN in the zone appeared to have bought into the quest by the South-West PDP to produce the next Speaker of the House of Representatives. It was said that there had been some consultative meetings between members of the PDP and the ACN in recent weeks. One of the leading contenders for the Speaker seat, Honourable Muraina Ajibola, was said to have met with some top ACN leaders last week. A source told the Nigerian Tribune that the opposition understood the advantage of returning the Speaker position in the zone. Even if the candidate would not be a member of the ACN, it would be beneficial to the larger interest of the South-West. “I can tell you that the leadership of ACN is convinced that the zoning pattern of the PDP, which favours the South-West producing the Speaker, was not misplaced. The leadership feels that the zone as an important component of the country should be carried along, notwithstanding the inadequacies of the PDP. The party is not opposed to the South-West producing the Speaker and the ACN might just deploy its numbers and goodwill in favour of a preferred candidate,” a source told the Nigerian Tribune. Horse trading over the position of the Speaker intensified at the weekend with the South-West PDP throwing its weight behind Honourable Ajibola. But another ranking member, Alhaja Mulikat Adeola, has also been meeting with stakeholders and has sustained her intention to vie for the House’s top Job. The main contenders have, however, shifted the lobbying sessions to the six venues of the National Assembly retreat for members-elect which took off on Sunday. Sources said that the PDP was trying all options to ensure unity of purpose in the election of the principal officers of the two chambers of the National Assembly. A source said that the party believed that zoning of party offices was crucial in its arrangement and that it would not allow any of its members truncate the arrangement put in place for 2011 to 2015 so as not to open the party to further challenges. Meanwhile Vice-President Namadi Sambo has said the new government to be formed by President Goodluck Jonathan would return Nigeria to its glory days, in which the country would emerge as one of the most developed in the comity of nations. Jonathan, he said, would run a fair and just administration which would not glorify an ethnic group above the other, while all the elements of governance, according to him, would be geared towards the re-awakening of Nigeria as a great country. Sambo made this known at the Transcorp Hotel, Abuja, during a parley with a group of House of Representatives members-elect drawn from all geopolitical zones. He urged them to develop the mindset of playing great roles in the task of transforming Nigeria, in line with the dream of the government. The new members had held a caucus meeting on selection of the next set of leaders in the House of Representatives and had invited the vice-president and a speakership hopeful as special guests. Sambo commended the initiative of the lawmakers-elect, urging them to shun primordial sentiment in the task of electing new set of leaders in the House. He promised the full cooperation of the presidency with the emerging legislative House. Meanwhile, the South-West caucus of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formerlly notified President Jonathan and the national headquarters of the party on its standpoint on the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives already zoned to the South-West. The caucus told the president that it acted in line with the resolve of the extended national caucus of the PDP that the position of speaker of the House of Representatives be zoned to the South-West. The caucus, in a memo to the president, dated May 13, 2011, said it had met and resolved to support Honourable Muraina Ajibola for the post, adding that it arrived at the decisions after debate by leading members of the party in the zone. According to the memo signed by Alhaji Tajudeen Oladipo, the caucus said its intervention became necessary, in order to guide the process of emergence of the next speaker from the zone in a manner that would generate the confidence of every stakeholder. “Your Excellency will recall that at the extended national caucus meeting of our party at Abuja, on May 10, 2001, the position of speaker of the House of Representatives was zoned to the South-West. “This issue was discussed extensively at the zonal caucus of our party held on May 12, 2011 at the Hilltop Mansion, Abeokuta, Ogun State and it was decided that the South-West will support the nomination of Honourable Muraina Ajibola representing Igboora/Ibarapa federal constituency for the position of speaker,” the memo read. Attendance at the meeting included the former president, Chief Olu-segun Obasanjo; Alhaji Oladipo; Oyo State governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala; former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former governor of Ekiti State, Chief Olusegun Oni and former governor of Ondo State, Chief Olu-segun Agagu. Others were Elder Joju Fadairo; Senator Kola Bajomo; Dr Femi Majeko-dunmi; Chief Dejo Afo-labi; Chief Adepegba Otemolu; Alhaji Fagun-wa Kayode; Chief Yemi Farounbi; Honourable Olatunji Odeyemi; Chief Dele Okeya; Chief Paul Afolabi and Ayorinde Oluwayemi. What we argued about previously was a misnomer. It really wasn't zoning, but power rotation and its so called turn by turn trips between North and South.
Zoning on the other hand, really means the balancing of power after the most powerful positions have been filled. There is no primitive power rotation involved. |

The trick didn't work on me then. This won't work on me today. Your statement in red is quite different from the one I made. I said that no Igbo man had asked for the speakership at any PDP National Working Committee meeting, which is the proper place to make such demands. Rather, the demand has come from outside groups (notably returned SE reps eying juicy positions); the understanding of the Igbo representatives in the PDP National Working Commitee is at complete odds with the speakership demand. There was indeed an SE meeting yesterday between all movers, shakers and powers (Ekwueme, governors etc) which reached a secret conclusion. What they made known however, is that their requests are for the benefit of the wider Igbo communitee. Its easy to read the signal and I believe they will douse any flames set by those with personal ambitions. I believe this is a link to the story about Obj thumping the table, it does not mention the SE demand for speakership, further buttressing my position: http://dailytrust.dailytrust.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18847:obasanjo-schemes-over-pdp-zoning&catid=2:lead-stories&Itemid=8 |
Politics › Re: Ibb Says Nigeria’ll Be Doomed W/o Zoning - More Like Ibb & Pdp Doomed W/o Zoning by Beaf: 3:51am On May 16, 2011 |
There is a very big gulf between IBB's understanding of zoning and what PDP is practising.
IBB's definition of zoning is due to his poor command of English. He has misunderstood balancing of political power between regions and religions as being the same as power rotation. NOT!
GEJ explained PDP's zoning long ago. After the President and VP have been elected, then the offices under them are balanced across the country. Simple. Zoning is not rotation. |

“We thank the people of South-East for their support for President Jonathan in the last elections and their support for other candidates.”
It was further learnt that the leaders of the zone might have decided not to make public their position on the sharing of positions because the zone, allegedly, did not bargain with the president before the elections.
“We are only interested in what will benefit the larger Igbo people for now,” a competent source informed the Nigerian Tribune. |
