Politics › Nice One GEJ - 1,035 Nigerians So Far Evacuated From Libya by Beaf(op): 1:14am On Mar 01, 2011
Another 536 Nigerians evacuated from Libya
Tuesday, 01 March 2011

The evacuation exercise embarked upon by the Federal Government to bring back stranded Nigerians in Libya has recorded additional 536 evacuees who were successfully flown to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Sunday night from Tripoli International Airport.

The total number of the evacuees so far, after the first batch of 499, is now 1,035 returnees which included adults and children.

The Director-General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Muhammad Sani-Sidi, while receiving the second batch at the airport said that the next flight, after receiving all necessary clearance, would leave for Tripoli today to bring back remaining Nigerians that had been registered and screened for the evacuation.

He said so far NEMA had continued to provide foods and medication as required for the evacuees at the designated special camp on Abuja International Airport road. He said that transportation arrangements were provided to take the passengers to their respective states of origin.

Welcoming the returnees to Nigeria on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Martin Uhomoibhi, said the Federal Government was passionate about the well-being of Nigerians and was glad to see them safely back to the country. He urged the returnees to be law-abiding citizens and contribute to national development.

One of the returnees, Bash Ali, a Nigerian professional boxer, who was in Tripoli for medical treatment, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for giving the directive for the evacuation exercise and the courteous and speedy response of response agencies for the intervention, especially the NEMA, security personnel and foreign affairs.

Bash Ali said that, “I am proud to be a Nigerian… I am proud of this encouraging exercise. Home is home… and home is sweet nothing is more comforting than to be among your people at home.”

He said as an African he was not happy at the turn of the event in Libya, saying that the crisis was caused by bad advisers rather than a single individual.

There evacuation exercise being coordinated by NEMA is targeted as evacuating over 2000 stranded Nigerians who are willing to return to Nigeria from the crisis in Libya.

It is the very people who sold Nigeria to the likes of Shell, of course!
Ndu chucks represents people who don't give a crap about where the oil is coming from, how much is drilled and by who. It was all about "don't read the bloody document, just sign and pick up the brown envelope."

That is how Nigeria operated for so long.

Any attack on Asiwaju Tinubu is  a plus for ACN. It's shows that PDP is a party that does not want us (yoruba) to have progress.

People will stand up agaist them.
So the World is correct that ACN is a regional party, whose backbone is ethnic bigotry?
I'm sure other parties are thinking about Nigeria, not an ethnic group. lol

The President came to transform Nigeria and the first place to start is transforming the PDP and he has stated that work. The PDP as a party has been in office for close to 12 years. There are perceptions about the PDP that may not be salutary to Nigerians. However, the determination of President Jonathan is to transform all aspects of our lives; our political lives in terms of practice, institution, governance and strategies.

The opposition has been very careful not to attack President Jonathan as a person. They are very careful. So they have been attacking the PDP, that the PDP has been in power since 1998 till date and nothing to show for it. Well, if I was working for the opposition, I would probably adopt that strategy because Jonathan is popular with the Nigerian people, the children, the youths, old men and women and with the old men of the society.

Why Jonathan wants Atiku’s camp in his campaign- Douglas
Politics Mar 1, 2011
CLIFFORD NDUJIHE, DEPUTY POLITICAL EDITOR

Mr. Oronto Douglas, special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Strategy and Documentation, in this interview speaks among others on intrigues heralding campaigns for the 2011 presidential polls, how President Jonathan is fencing off the opposition and efforts to bring the Alhaji Atiku Abubakar camp into his campaign train. Excerpts:

Given the acrimonies that trailed the Peoples Democratic Party primaries, what is the president doing to bring aggrieved stakeholders togther?

Oronto Douglas
The PDP as party is seen by many that once you have the ticket you are half way to getting to office. People should know that this is a new PDP, where the most popular and competent candidates are picked to run elections. But where there are constitutional issues, the strategy that President Jonathan and the PDP are adopting is dialogue. Let all parties have a discussion.

The president spent sleepless nights having meeting and meetings. I remember that Ogun State for example, there was a time the President did not sleep for two days – meeting with the Jubril Martins Kuye group, the Gbenga Daniel group, etc and at a point brought all of them together at the Villa. All these were intended to bring the party together. The president is a man of peace. He tells everybody, I have no enemies to fight, I want all of us to work together. Regardless of what of may have caused separation, there is nothing that cannot be resolved.

So this strategy of inclusivity via dialogue is what the President is emphasising. For example, after the presidential primaries that was orderly and he won, he still went out of his way to drive to Malam Adamu Ciroma’s house to have a discussion with a view to keeping the party together.

If he chooses he could have ignored Ciroma but he felt that a statesman of Ciroma’s stature who is part of a constituency cannot be ignored. And if he is president he wants to be president of all, not president of a section or region. It is in this regard that the President sees the strategy of outreach, dialogue as what is going to help to heal the wounds with a view of PDP winning the election in every area they have presented candidates.

How do you see comments that President Goodluck Jonathan insulted South-West people with his statement in Ibadan during the rally that the party would rescue South-West from rascals?

In the statement, the President praised Southwesterners for their sophistication and high level of education. If a statement regarding that is being taken out of context and used for political purpose, it is unfortunate. The President, as a true statesman would, came out to say, ‘I take responsibility for this statement, I offer my sincere regrets in this regard, that what I meant is to celebrate the excellence, greatness and leadership of South-West people.

It is unfortunate that one or two individuals are appropriating it and pushing it to mean insulting the most educated and sophisticated people. The President will never insult his elders and leaders. If you knew the President well, he always answers ‘sir’ to anyone who is older than him. He will never insult the elders, leaders and people of the South-West. Take note that the President is educated, he did his NYSC in the South-West, has friends from the South-West and is one person who never forgets. Some of those he did youth service with from the South-
West are now working with him.

What do you make of allegations that the President, sometimes talks too much?

Mr President is a man of very little words, calm, cool, calculative and deliberative in the way he carries on in his personal life, public life,  It is important that we do no ascribe flippancy to Mr President. We need to study this man, may be as a teacher and as a scholar, in explaining things, some may say he is giving too much information. The reality is that he doesn’t need to hide anything because he doesn’t believe in hiding things.

His life has been a life of transparency and like you said. We know who we are. His background can be traced from the village and you can say that this is who the president is. He has also worked hard in Nigeria. He has no bank account aborad. All his children school here and he schooled here. Every thing about him is known. So, it is absolutely important that this man who has come out from a humble beginning to become the president of Nigeria, is seen for what he is.

Could you comment on reports that President Jonathan queried his vice, Namadi Sambo over the walkout of party supporters and crowd at the North-West rally of the PDP in Kaduna?

There was absolutely no query for the vice president and there was no incident where the vice president was asked about anything regarding crowd. Whatever have been published is absolutely out of the imagination of whomever that published it. My observations is that the crowd in Kaduna had been sitting there from 7am.

The event was scheduled at the time I don’t know but as at the time the President and all the dignitaries arrived, people were very tired. Take note, they were zonal rallies and most of the people were returning to their areas. Some are going to drive to Sokoto, Kebbi and Kano and I believe that if you go to a place like that, it is like what happened in Port-Harcourt, when the occasion ended, people wanted to go back to their buses and travel.

In a zonal rally, people come from various states. So if the day is getting dark, you will want to get back home. It is part of the Nigerian character that we do not have this patience to want to wait. So if we reverse the order of the programme and say t
he President will speak first in the programme, will anyone go and write that people walked out of the stadium?

I want to believe that those circulating that information are doing it for political purposes. The president is a gentle man. Why will he query his vice president? For what? Was it the Vice President that organised the zone? The zonal rally was organised by the zonal coordinator who is not even the governor of Kaduna State. The Coordinator of the North-West zonal rally is from Kastina. This is to tell you that the basis of that allegation is not correct because if there is any query at all, it will be directed to the Katsina State governor because the people coming are from the various states.

Rather than tiredness, how would you react to insinuations that the people left because they are not in support of the President?

I don’t agree. The president won 53 % of the votes of the North-West delegates. He may have lost in some states but he won with 53 percent over all, meaning that he had overwhelming support of the people and voting of the majority. Democracy is about majority. At the election proper, what the president needs is 25 per cent and he got more than that in majority of these states. Ordinary people in the North West, love Dr Jonathan. Why would they love him? It is because he relates with them.

This is a president that had no shoes when he was in school. This is a president that had no bag to put his books when he was in school. If you go to the North-West, the North East and the South-South, The South-West and South-East, the majority of Nigerians will identify with that. Why wouldn’t the North-West people who want to represent the rise from that humble beginning to the top of their children, the children of the North-West will one day, regardless of the present circumstances, get there. Why would they not support
and rally round such an individual?

But you would agree that he has a lot of job to do in the North-West compared to the other zones?

Every other candidate has work to do in every zone. Buhari has work to do in the South-West, he has work to do in the South-East, South-West and in the North-Central, North-East and North-West. Is it everybody in the North West that loves Buhari?. Nuhu Ribadu has work to do in every single zone. So the political challenges are challenges that are not restricted to one person. Picking out Gooduck Jonathan and saying he has a lot of work to do in the North-West is an acknowledgment that you want the president and you want him to win and we are ready to work very hard to ensure that we win that election and win the North-West.

Let me just say that we have a lot of people who will like  to identify with Mr president, his history and all that.

What about the alleged poor performance of his party, PDP in the last 12 years?

So, to get him out of the race is to attack the PDP, which is brilliant from the strategy point of view to deny Jonathan the opportunity. But Nigerians are very wise because they know who they want to become their President. They will look at everything and say we are comfortable with this man who we can surrender our lives to.  They are not going to be Bamboozled by the weight of this blanket attack that may be unleashed and being unleashed on the PDP. So, Dr Jonathan is fully aware that the PDP will be attacked and at some point the opposition will also attack him and he is pre
pared for them. Look at the statement he made in Ibadan for example that was blown out of proportion.

I for example I am a beneficiary of Chief Obafemi Awolowo free education. If I am advising the President and standing with the President, would I tell the President to do anything against the South-West? Dr. Jonathan did his NYSC in the Southwest and has a lot of friends in the South- West. Would he now do anything against the South-West? People just pick a few thing to find a way to tarnish the image of someone. In the nest few weeks, it is going to be very interesting in Nigeria.

Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor recently raised issues about President Jonathan’s alleged mismanagement of the economy. What is the blue print of Mr President to ensure that life is bearable and meaningful?

Your question borders on  programme quality and vision of Mr President. I need to quickly draw the fact that Mr President has been in the office for nine months. He was sworn in on May 6, 2010 and on that he promised what we call the three Es. He looked at Electoral reform, Electricity and Energy security. These where the three things he promised Nigerians because as a man of his word, what has he done about this three and why must this three be important in the economic and total  transformation of Nigeria?

Electoral reform: There cannot be good government if you do not have constitutional and robust process for selecting the leaders who will govern the country. He decided that the individuals who will mount this important institution will be men and women of outstanding degree. In practical terms of electoral reforms, he decided, ‘let us practicalise what we are preaching.’ so when the bye-election was coming up in the Edo Central, he decided that it was one of the first test cases that he was going to practicalise free and fair elections.

He told INEC the security agency that what he wants in Edo central is one man, one vote. One woman, one vote, one youth, one vote. that he does not want any situation where the election is rigged. that is a big one from the president. In that Edo Central, who ever won will tilt the balance in the state assembly in favour of the other. PDP needed that to be able to control the state assembly.  Oshiomole needed that to stand firm in that position. The president insisted on free and fair election and the result came, and the ACN won. Oshiomole flew from Benin to Abuja to congratulate and thank the President for standing on the rule of law and insisting on free and fair election.

On electricity, I was in Lagos the other day talking to Editors and one journalist told me, ‘look I live in Ikorodu,  for sometime for 18 hours they have electricity. Somebody from Egbeda said yes the same goes with Egbeda. and that we have 12 hours of electricity and that they now know when light will come and when it will go. So you now plan your life accordingly. This is not worth celebrating but it is worth recognizing that some improvement has come to stay.

Getting up power cannot be decreed because the infrastructure that would have given us 24 hours electricity is not just there. We have to build the infrastructure and it takes time in building it. The President is determined in making sure that this is done.

On energy security, it is important that we note that before now, you will stay on the queue for three hours, while some people sleep overnight in the filling stations just to get a little of drop of fuel to put in their car. People were sleeping three days, three nights in filling stations Now that is a thing of the past.

How did he do this? Why is it that so many people couldn’t do it. Secondly the same amount of litres of fuel you buy in Lagos is what you are going to buy in Maidugiri. How did this equalization of price come to be? Before now, you may buy N100 per litre in Zungeru and N 60 per litre in Lagos.

-does England practice democracy since the queen is the head of government and her position is not up for grab ? Why are britains not protesting since the prime minister is still surbodinate to the queen ?
The Prime Minister is not subordinate to the Queen in any way. The Queen is titular head of state, which is a ceremonial position. No one asks her opinion before policy is hammered out and actioned, she just reads one or two speeches and does as she is directed.

The royal house represents a beautiful piece of British history (its got worms as well) and the Brits who some accuse of lacking culture and tradition, choose to keep their royalty alive as supreme proof of culture and an icon of history.

That singular act indicates a people who have completely lost all knowledge of their history. Even their recent history.

These African leaders need to read The Destruction of Black Civilization by the late Dr Chancellor Williams.

Dr Williams, an Oxford trained African-American historian and anthropologist, spent nearly 20 years of his life travelling throughout Africa, researching that book, which has been called ''The Black Man's Bible''.

Anyone who reads that book will know that it makes no sense at all, that it is in fact COMICAL, for Africans to be in any sort of ''union'' with Arabs.

Interesting. Let d show begin!

As much as it can pass for indictment, there's no conviction presented here. So i can say it's legally as good as nothing.
The case is still open in America. Tinubu, like Atiku cannot go to the US, lest he be summarilly locked away.

“The facts revealed in the U.S. Investigation of the funds and their source are detailed in the affidavit filed by the Internal Revenue Service.

In the letter from the NDLEA that resulted in Kellum’s reaction, the lead anti-narcotic agency in Nigeria said that the conclusion it could draw was that Tinubu’s drug case was yet to be closed by the United States.

The letter, in its opinion section, noted, “Former paragraph 6 above, Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu was involved in Money Laundering Transactions along with Mueez Adegboya Akande and Abiodun Agbele in the United States of America.

“Even though he was not charged to court, he had to compromise the case. Otherwise, he would have lost the whole money.

“Arising from the case, Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu forfeited 460,000 US dollars to the United States Government being proceeds of narcotic trafficking or property involved in financial transactions in violation of 18 USO 1956 and 1957 and therefore was forfeitable to the United States (emphasis that of the NDLEA).

“It is pertinent to note that the funds held by Citi bank which was released to Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu and the action filed against these funds held in the said accounts was dismissed with prejudice. This in effect means the case has not been closed (emphasis that of NDLEA)

Because I think this revolution of theirs is going to be very nasty and lengthy. Peace may be elusive in Libya for some time to come.
True, Libya is the new Afghanistan. A lawless land with no government and civilians roaming the deserts in sophisticated tanks.

The AU is powerless though, cos it was Gaddafi's biggest toy. The Black World really needs to stand up and be counted in its own affairs.

U.S AGENTS EXPOSE BOLA TINUBU'S DRUG TRAFFICKING DEALS

Facts have emerged that the erstwhile Governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu may have been involved in a white heroin trafficking network which operated in Chicago and some parts of Indiana and led by one Adegboyega Mueez Akande between 1988 and 1993. The source of the white heroine was identified as one Mr. Lee Andrew Edwards who was incarcerated for attempting to murder a federal agent while the agent was executing a search warrant on him.

According to the Verified Complaint for forfeiture in case No. 93 C 4483 Obtained by SaharaReporters, which was filed on July 26, 1993 before the Hon. Judge Nordberg of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the United States Government urged the Court to order the forfeiture of funds in accounts Nos. 263226700 held by First Heritage Bank in the name of Bola Tinubu, funds in accounts 39483134, 39483396, 4650279566, 00400220, 39936404 and 39936383 held by Citibank N.A in the name of Bola Tinubu and funds in accounts 52050-89451952,52050-89451952, 52050-89451953 held by Citibank in the name of Bola Tinubu because there was probable cause to believe that the funds in Tinubu's bank accounts represented proceeds of narcotics trafficking or were monies involved in financial transactions in violations of 18 U.S.C, sections 1956 and 1957 and therefore, was forfeitable to the U.S Government.

Nigeria will go bankrupt if your likes don't get your arses in gear, instead of having wet dreams about free oil revenues like welfare lovers.

Dude, better take full advantage of the beautiful private sector plans being put in place by this GEJ. Those who don't work shouldn't eat; I can't believe there are actually educated youth out there in this day and age that think more or less like your average almajiri.
Govt is only there to create an enabling environment, it is your place to make the country rich or poor. And you better start thinking.

What do you or state or your LG produce? Nothing? Thats what GEJ is here to change, to make everyone more self-reliant as obtains elsewhere on the Globe, if I were you, I would read up instead of wasting words.

Have you ever wonder why USA has never try to Jail Tinubu? it is because he has no case to answer, all this Propaganda by PDP is Cooked up stories. But to you meek supporters of Calumny, i pity ya all.
Better find something else doing
The best governor in Nigeria is not the loudmouthed Fashola who is selling everything of value in Lagos to himself and his godfather, Tinubu, while planting leprous flowers to decieve the airy headed ones amongst us.

The best governor in Nigeria is Akpabio, followed by Amaechi and Oshiomole; that is according to the US, a country far enough down the road of development not to be fooled by a couple of miserable flowers like our resident area boy.

. . .By the way, Tinubu is a convicted criminal who will soon be in jail.

This is a call for Beaf's opinion on this issue, any other pro GEJ/ pro PDP could also contribute logical views and reaction to this
I don't like it.

Foreign Affairs › Mugabe Has Done Well, But It's Time To Go by Beaf(op): 7:43pm On Feb 28, 2011
Mugabe has done quite well for Zimbabwe, standing up to imperial powers and navigating Zimbabwe through the various economic mine fields laid out by Western powers.

He outmanoeuvred the Western stooge, Tsvangerai putting him in a Prime Ministerial post that is at best ceremonial. It was a trap Tsvangerai never saw coming, and when he did, it was too late and his fight back too disorganised. The neutered Tsvangerai is now almost better known for chasing after married women than for any political exploits. One traitor down.

Mugabe’s wiliness also saw them through the heavy attentions of the West that saw Zimbabwe unable to trade for a number of years.
Today Zimbabwe is enjoying one of the highest (if not the highest) growth rates in the Southern tip of Africa. Even the IMF has come out in grudging praise.

Even with the crisis, Zimbabwe still maintains one of the best road networks in Africa. I could go on and on, but one has to stop and take notes. At 87, Mugabe is no virile young cock rearing to go. He is an old man by any reckoning; even in today’s World of extended life spans, he is a very old man indeed. Last week, I watched with mixed feelings as he cut his 87th birthday cake; here is a man who assumed office in 1980, making this his 31st year as President.
He has done well, but now there is little left to prove. No doubt, there are many younger men with much higher energy levels in his ZAN-PF; it is high time Mugabe bowed out from the scene.

Mugabe will always be recognised as an African hero.

Africans hunted down in "liberated" Libya

African stopped in his car by Libyan vigilante groups, accusing him of being a mercenary

© Anonymous/afrol News
afrol News, 28 February - As defected army units and civilians in "liberated" eastern Libya are eager to demonstrate unity, "African mercenaries" are increasingly singled out as the enemy. Africans are systematically hunted down.

"Mercenaries" is the most used word among anti-Ghaddafi Libyans these days. It is increasingly used to describe everybody loyal to the Ghaddafi regime, while it for most people refers to "Black Africans" allegedly in the regime's service.

As one city after the other gets "liberated", mostly following the defection of Libyan army and police units, civilians and Libyan troops agree to stop mentioning the recent fights between Libyan nationals. The "mercenaries" were and are the enemy.

Sidsel Wold, an experienced journalist from Norway's 'NRK' broadcaster currently in Al-Bayda, experienced the rhetoric first-handedly. She was told that the large battle about this east Libyan city had been fought around an army barrack, which everybody referred to as being defended by "mercenaries".

Let to film the captured "mercenaries", most turned out to have an Arab appearance. The few persons of sub-Saharan African appearance were all in civilian clothes. It became clear that several of these African "mercenaries" had been captured after the fighting.

Ms Wold also witnessed and filmed the interrogation of a captured Chadian citizen by a defected army officer. The Chadian, with civilian clothes, insisted he was a normal "civilian; a worker." Asked why he and four other Africans had been observed fleeing, he said he had been "scared by the shooting."

The defected Libyan army officer clearly stated he did "not believe" him. The attempt by a group of five sub-Saharan Africans to escape the city was "suspicious" in itself. The group was kept in detention - however in seemingly humane conditions - suspected of being "mercenaries".

In Al-Bayda, the hunt-down and arbitrary arrest of sub-Saharan Africans goes

on. Ms Wold also spoke to a group of Libyan youths, monitoring the streets in accordance with the city's interim authorities - made up of civilians and defected army officers. The youths openly told her they were out, trying "to catch mercenaries to hand them over to authorities."

Reports from other "liberated" Libyan cities are similar. In Benghazi last week, citizens attacked and destroyed a building housing 36 citizens from Chad, Niger and Sudan. The Africans were accused of being "mercenaries" and subsequently arrested, local residents told Western journalists.

The brave anti-Ghaddafi Libyans reporting about their fight against the regime through social media in the internet or by telephone are sending out the same message. The "Libyan Youth Movement", standing in constant phone contact with Libyans in the war zone and sending updates and videos via social media, generally refers to those still resisting the popular revolution as "mercenaries".

These sources frequently talk about interim authorities in "liberated cities" arming local youths to go after "mercenaries". There are frequent messages in a victorious tone about "mercenaries running away from protesters" and youths "catching mercenaries."

Equally disturbing, the most appalling scenes - including the butchering of Libyan children and women - are always attributed "mercenaries", seemingly in the belief that a Libyan would never do such barbaric acts. No documentation of the perpetrator is ever presented.

As the public hatred against the "black African mercenaries" is increasing, not all Africans arbitrarily captured are treated as humanely as by Al-Bayda interim authorities. There is a growing number of reports about sub-Sahara

n Africans being killed by lynching mobs in "liberated Libya".

For example, last week a Turkish construction worker told the 'BBC': "We had 70-80 people from Chad working for our company. They were cut dead with pruning shears and axes, attackers saying: 'You are providing troops for Ghaddafi.' The Sudanese were also massacred. We saw it for ourselves."

A Sierra Leonean worker in Tripoli reported to his friend: "All black Africans are becoming targets. I write to inform you how deteriorating the condition in Tripoli is getting by the hour, especially for us black Africans who have been threatened by violence accused of siding with the regime."

"Somalis in Tripoli say they are being hunted on suspicion of being mercenaries," spokesperson Melissa Fleming of the UN's refugee agency UNHCR recently reported, adding the agency was "increasingly concerned."

'Time' journalist Abigail Hauslohner, currently in Benghazi, talked to volunteers Hayan Salaama and Idris Shebany saying they were "afraid people will attack the Africans." Workers were attacked while making their escape, they added. A Ghanaian worker added: "The Libyans, when they see the blacks, they will kill them."

The number of sub-Saharan Africans residing in Libya is unclear, but civil society sources speak of "several hundreds of thousands" legally registered Africans. In addition, a very large number of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers are in the country.

It is widely believed that there indeed are mercenary troops in Libya, event though the proof presented is poor. Several sources speak of a secrete recruitment of mercenaries among several rebel groups the Ghaddafi regime has supported through its history; especially from th

e ongoing Darfur conflict.

No reliable sources are found documenting this, however. The Libyan League of Human Rights today claimed that there were around 6,000 mercenaries in Libya, "of which 3,000 are in Tripoli." But it presents no documentation.

Several videos and photos, allegedly documenting groups of mercenaries in Libya, circulate in the internet. Most tell little about the origin of these pro-Ghaddafi forces, which also could be Libyan. A few however show dark-skinned individuals - plain-clothed or uniformed - seemingly of African origin.

The few Africans caught with weapons and speaking to Western journalists claimed not to be mercenaries, but were looking for work in Libya. They claimed to have been picked up by officials and promised work in Tripoli. In the capital, they were sent to army barracks; given arms and a large sum of money and ordered to shoot at protesters.

But most sub-Saharan Africans arbitrarily detained in "liberated Libya" deny ever to have taken part in the fighting, saying they are workers or looking for work.

Stronger and stronger doubts about the existence of African mercenaries are emerging. Today, scared Ghanaians finally left to flee to Egypt said they were forced "to pose as mercenaries" by Libyans, who later posted their pictures on social media such as YouTube and Facebook.

No African government, not even the African Union (AU) - has reacted to the claims of African mercenaries in Libya, except Chad. "Chadians are not sent or recruited in Chad to serve as mercenaries in Libya," government said in a recent statement, adding that reports about Chadian mercenaries were "likely to cause serious physical and material harm to Chadians residing in Libya."
