Why not enjoy both? That is an even better option.
Well, I never said this. . . and personally don't think it. The current allocation %ages are approximately reasonable.
Might not be wrong. However, if you have oil wealth, you'll be manipulated/dominated by one entity or another. Such is the way of the world.
When I hear such things, I wish Ya Adua hadn't died. By now we would have been at fullscale war (most likely, ND would since have whopped the leaches, cos we have all the money grin) and this discussion would have been academic. The plus right now, is that we haven't forgotten, and we no de carry last. So I'll still say, get a job for the rainy day when parasites are either ejected or the good people in the rest of the country negotiate an equitable solution with the ND.

That said, I see no reason why the ND cannot give soft loans to other regions to develop their resource (human or physical), but leaching is unsustaianable and will lead to war sooner, rather than later.

It is what it is. Isn't as if there is much you can do to stop non-ND states from enjoying "your" oil.

The rules of the game are as they are. . . and it will take some effort to revise them.

With that said, I do support (to some extent) greater control over local resources.
In the meantime there should be some degree of shame in actually wanting more free money like its fine to lay back and be on welfare. Thats laziness.
lagos has vast quantities of tar sands and maybe some oil of their own, so they can seek to develop that and tourism, instead of seeking for free money shamelessly. And even going as far as saying ND states are depriving states that to put it bluntly are leaches. Like the US put it, the ND is like an occupied territoty by the rest of the country.
Are these ports not open? I'm pretty sure PH and Calabar are both open. Just less profitable to ship up a river than to ship by sea.
This is a very, very strong allegation. Do you have any evidence for it?
See my first comment.
The ports are all open, the problem is twofold; the FG has allowed them silt up in a way that locals think is deliberate, secondly the road networks feeding the ports have not been expanded and have been allowed to decay.

This is Warri port:

https://www.urhoboland.com/News%20Files/Warri%20Port.jpg

And here's what a different voice has to say:

FG killed Delta ports, says Iweta

PRESIDENT, Delta State Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Mr. David Iweta, yesterday accused the Federal Government of deliberately seeing to the collapse of Warri, Sapele, Koko and Burutu Ports with its refusal to dredge the 6.4 meters draft of the Escrvaos Bar in Delta State in the past 25 years.

Mr. Iweta, who is also the chairman of Madewel Products Limited in a statement made available to the media, noted that the Federal Government was promoting militancy in the Niger-Delta by its action.

He  wondered why the same government which refused to dredge the Escravos Bar at a cost of N5 billion approved and released between N36 billion – N46 billion for the dredging the River Niger along the Lokoja channel via Onitsha within a period of just five to eight years.

His words: “The shallow state of 6.4 meters draft of Escravos Bar has led to the   near zero activities at Warri, Sapele, Koko and Burutu ports.

“This is borne out of the over prolonged delays or refusal of the Federal Ministry of Transport to execute the endless promises to dredge the channel for the past 25 years, but within 5-8 years of proposing to dredge the River Niger, along the Lokoja Channel,  they approved and released a whopping sum of N36billion-N46billion to dredge same via Onitsha – Patani-Warri inland waterways,  which was flagged of recently by President Umaru Yar‘Adua without disclosing the economic gains to Nigerians and the Maritime world,  such as the anticipated  volume of cargo it will freight from point A to point B, as compared to the commercial gains of dredging the Escravos Channel that will lead to full operation of Warri, Sapele, Koko, Burutu ports that are International Sea Ports,  that merely require a cost of less than N5 billion to enhance the channels up to 12 meters draft from its current draft of about 6.4 meters.

“The Warri New Port section, which is about 5 meters draft cannot allow vessels of draft in the region of 6.4 meters to berth except only at the old Port of Warri. Sapele Port has long been occupied by the Nigerian Navy, yet there is no war at Sapele.

“But the then military government converted the best and the only port complex in Nigeria of Sapele Port to Naval training base. This has led to total collapse of Sapele commercial and industrial activities. “The closure of Sapele Port has led to high crime rate, unemployment and other social vises”.

It is no doubt that the high rate of robbery along the Benin/Warri highway and militant activities in the creeks is a result of the closure and inactive conditions of the Delta ports.

“It is worth mentioning that the natural rubber factories at Sapele and Oghara alone number over 16, comprising of Okpe Trading Company, Oghene. Rubber Factory, D.C.C Rubber Factory, New Independent Rubber Factory now K.B Rubber Factory, Enthuat Rubber Factory .F.G Spiropolus Rubber Factory, Nagro Rubber Factory, (Formerly Lewis & Peat of U.K) Pamol Rubber Factory, Rodco Rubber Latex , JA-Thomas Rubber Factory, J.K Rubber  Factory, etc.

“It is surprising that all these factories have become skeletons of their former selves as a result of the huge cost of transporting by road of their finished products to Lagos Ports for export at high cost, thus making their products to be uncompetitive in the international market. The reverse would be the case should Sapele Port function as a commercial port.”

According to Iweta, “it is very important to develop Inland Waterways of a nation which depends solely on Sea Ports. The River Niger that is now being dredged with draft not exceeding 6 meters along its channel, will depend on Warri, Sapele, Burutu and Koko Ports to forward and receive import and export cargo with the aid of barges and tug/push boats.

“This is because the River Niger Lokoja channel along with the Onitsha mini port will be serviced by the Delta Ports and not Calabar, Port Harcourt or Lagos Ports. It is annoying that less than 5-10 years ago,  the Calabar Channel was dredged but because of the method applied, the sand have reverted back, and, therefore, big vessels cannot call the Port at moment.

“ It is a known fact that in the months of July – August 2009,  Port Harcourt Port up to Onne was given a sweep dredging enhancing its draft but the Escravos Channel was again ignored. Madewell Portland Cement, being the company granted Cement Import License, among the six new entrants in the cement industry, one each from the six geographical zones, and representing the South –South with  a base in Sapele could not direct his vessels to either Warri, Sapele, Koko or Burutu Ports , which is their primary port of call, but first have to take the vessel to Onne to be handled by Private Terminal operators by Midstream discharge at lighting cost in the region of N100 million per every 10,000 metric tones of cement and further spend over N40 million to transport same by trucking on our bad roads to Ughelli, Patani, Warri, Sapele, Asaba.

“The above cost and inconveniences would have been saved and the people of Delta State would have benefited more by the advantage and opportunity of having a Delta-based company granted Cement Import License to buy the product at very low price.

“It is after removing (lighting) mother vessel by 10,000 – 13,000 tons that such vessels can now sail through the Escravos Channel of 6.4 meters to the Old Port of Warri as draft at New Port is about 5 meters.”

Iweta queried:   “Of what importance is it to Nigeria and her entrepreneurs to be paying demurrage in the region of US$10,000 per day at Lagos ports per vessel that are waiting to take their turn to be called in to berth either at Apapa or Tin-Can Island Ports for a period as long as 14 – 21days at peak period where over 100 vessels floating at Lagos waters when there are  four modern ports lying fallow in Delta State?

“The effect of demurrage on Lagos Cargo imports increases the cost of imported finished goods and imported raw materials for Nigeria industries thus creating unnecessary inflation to our economy with attendant high cost of production on our factories thus making so many industries to close shop”.

“While maritime activities should be encouraged to its maximum in the country, due consideration should be given to the agricultural produce and solid bulk  minerals as raw materials  to stimulate export to reduce cost of freight on our imported and exported Cargo as Vessel owners charges higher freight  on our inward cargo as there are no outward bound Cargo for export out of Nigeria such as, maize, grand nut, cotton, coal, iron ore, rubber, etc if this is part of the reasons behind dredging the River Niger for onward delivery to the Delta Ports for export to the outside world thus making our export commodities from the Eastern and Northern Part of Nigeria to be more competitive when compared to high cost of land haulage to Warri Port, then it is justifiable. But such export cargo is not insight”, he said.

“I wish to state here that some of the reasons that led to the earlier closure and later give away price sale of Delta Steel Complex was as a result of the non-dredging of the Escravos Channel as the company depended heavily on imported iron ore and so much is paid as dead-weight on freight as the empty space on board 25,000tons vessel by loading 12,500 tons of cargo.

By this, half of the cost of chartering the vessel becomes wasted or loss to the company thus leading to high cost of production and their products cannot compete with imported steel products. Therefore they cannot dream of venturing into the export market. This is as a result of the shallow draft of the Escravos Channel of the 6.4 meters.

The Delta Steel Complex workers that were laid off – where are they now?  Should the company be working and making profit, would there not have been expansion programs to employ more of our youths that are now in the creeks?  Should A.T. & P that was a major exporter of timber products from their Sapele Plant that employs over 20% of Sapele workforce when it was operating which is referred to as the biggest timber factory in Africa be functioning properly and absolving such workforce, the tempo of robbery or militancy and poverty would disappear from Sapele.

“There is no doubt that the refusal of the Federal Government to dredge the Escravos Channel down to Warri Port is a major cause of unemployment that led to militancy activities in Delta State as the boys that are endowed with operation of marine equipments that would have been developed to become ship captains, masters, engineers on board big vessels and vibrant operations of small boats, boat repairs activities.

I hope GEJ will do this and free the people of Lagos to enjoy their city/state. Even if he want to locate the seaport in Bayelsa no qualms as far as its functioning.
There are ports in Warri, Port Hacourt and Calabar, so there's no need for one in Bayelsa. All that needs doing is allow imports and exports flow through these ports. It is really odd that you import a car as a Warri resident, but have to travel all the way to Lagos, whereas there is a port next door. Something is really wrong with the way Nigeria is run, how can 3 ports waste away in that manner? In the meantime Lagos, which should be beautiful keeps getting more rotten, because the ports attract a huge influx of economic migrants.

Racism rears its ugly face in Libya uprising live on TV
By Tedla Asfaw

The ugly face of racism once again show its face on world stage in the week long uprising to topple Muammar Gadaffi. Reports are coming suggesting foreign "mercenaries" fighting for Muammar Gadaffi, most of them black Africans. We watched on Al Jazeera a black man beaten up and dragged to his death. On this confusion many countries, Europeans, Americans and Asians are taking their own citizens out of Libya by air, sea and land. Where is the African Union ?

Most workers are seen crossing Libya to Egypt or Tunisia but we never saw anyone going to South, Niger, Chad or Sudan for that matter to Algeria. Most of the media coverage is on what is going on in the East which is now free from Gadaffi's control. Why not we see black Africans running for their safety ? As we heard it from DW Amharic today most of them are hiding in their houses because it is dangerous for blacks to come out because they are considered by most Libyans as mercenaries.

This indeed is very tragic. Most of Ethiopians are refugees in Libya.Ethiopian women working as maids currently are under the care of the households they live seems they are safe for now. That as well is not guaranteed.Due to public pressure they might be pushed to face street justice including rape,

The passport displayed on Al Jazeera includes many passports carried by Ethiopians. From DW interview we heard most of them were dragged from their apartments beaten up and showed to the world as mercenaries. We also heard many Ethiopians killed by angry mob in Benghazi.

Muammar Gadafi haters are taking revenge on black Africans for money Gadafi threw for many African dictators. The mob attacked and killed many Africans including Ethiopians for being only black. This is not acceptable and we have to alert Human Right, and Amnesty International to investigate all who are paraded as "mercenaries" on Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera should also tone down unconfirmed report and endanger black Africans at this dangerous moment. Ethiopians have no representative government who cares for our refugees. If in fact Ethiopia sends mercenaries Meles Zenawi will never admit it because it will accelerate his own downfall.

However, Ethiopians in Diaspora have responsibility to represent fellow Ethiopians at this deadly moment and rally behind them, they are crying for help. We know no one is in charge of Libya right now.It is street rule until all settled down I am afraid this uprising will take the lives of many black Africans including many Ethiopians. If there are "mercenaries" it seems to me now they are only black Africans, that is absurd. Gadaffi's money can buy a lot of mercenaries, black, white, brown and yellow. Who is now flying Gadaffis plane and helicopters, are they also black Africans ?

Muammar Gadaffi is ready to take Libya down with him, unfortunately, many black Africans who are caught in this mess will go down with him. Their death is only because for being black in a wrong country. The tragedy is most of them left their country for safety and faced detention and racism in Libya. Most who were in detention their situation might even be worst. We have obligation to speak on their behalf by sharing any information we got about them.

The lynching and killing that is going on against black Africans in Libya will sure further divide the Arabs from the rest of Africa. The Arab League should speak against racist killing and accusations. They should sanction and condemn not only Gadaffi but also all who are killing black Africans. President Obama who urged African Union to play its role to stop the killing in Libya should be informed also that black Africans are a target of racist killing in Libya by Libyans mob.

We need to open up the ports in Warri, Port Hacourt and Calabar for business.
They have been starved off business and Lagos has gained; that way other states would contribute to Nigeria's VAT takings and trade would be dispersed, thus reducing the population in Lagos.

Whats the reason why all the port business was moved to Lagos anyway?

On what basis did they do the rating? did they explain that to you? and how can you rate states who have different population ratio, monthly allocation and geographical location? you can't compare Lagos with Akwa Ibom man, you can't, not even Rivers. (at least let them know the various infrastructures and industrial development they claim are in Akwa Ibom. I mean the towns where these things were put and all sort, not some random write up from some people who haven't even been to Nigeria not to talk of knowing where Akwa Ibom is.

I can smell and sense jealousy in his writings (with the way he constantly talks about Fashola switching to PDP tales).
Nah, the whole thing is just really funny. We keep hearing all sorts of noises from Fashola about the Presidency, whereas he is a mere governor. And yes, I do say Fashola will end up in PDP, cos thats really his only option if he doesn't want to be suffocated and spat out by Tinubu.

Shutting down the air space because of presidential movement (if that was the case)was an extreme and callous measure, which GEJ might not have been aware of or if he was aware of that , shows lack of good judgement on his part.

Shutting down an air space without warning could lead to loss of lives and heavy economic losses. Reports show that most air crashes are a result of human error.

I also support GEJ, but it becomes a tough job at times to defend some issues surrounding him, don't you think so ?
The security cordon arround GEJ is extremly tight and for good reason. The way the cordon is set up is something GEJ himself has complained about (then the very same people sneering here, sneered as well), especially when his cousins arm was broken, but the NSA knows best.

Always good to have objective, 3rd party commentary on how you (or your cities) are doing.

I wonder though; you'd think that the large influx of people into Lagos suggests that it is at least superior to most of its competitors in West Africa. After all, people are voting with their feet.
Warri (our biggest town) is like 1.5 million or so, it can't yet be classed as a megacity like Lagos. We be tiny!
People go to Lagos because there's a big market, things cost more, there's a huge population and everybody wants a piece of that.

I haven't been to Calabar (shame), but from what I've seen, read and heard, its Nigeria's best city by some margin.

I don't think anything can save Nigeria from these lockups, because there are pockets of extreme ethnic bigotry that make the Presidents security a matter to be taken very seriously.

We shouldn't be too quick to forget how he was openly warned that he would be shot by snipers if he laid the wreath for the unknown soldier. He braved it, but that shouldn't happen everyday. So until some Nigerians stop the shocking displays of ethnic hatred, we will continue to have our airspace closed.

Anyway, here is an overview: http://www.eiu.com/Handlers/WhitepaperHandler.ashx?fi=Liveability_rankings_Promotional_PDF_V02.pdf&mode=wp

Seems to me that most cities in Nigeria likely will do even worse on these metrics (stability, healthcare, culture & environment, education infrastructure) than Lagos.

Anyway, we definitely have got a long way to go in Lagos. No question about that.
Most of Delta state beats Lagos hands down on every one of those metrics. The only arguable area is stability.

Omo ibo on its own is not an insulting word, but when it gets insulting is how the Yorubas use it indiscriminately, if you cannot speak Yoruba, you're automatically called an omo ibo irrespective of where you are from, Imagine some Yorubas calling a Bini man an omo ibo? or a woman from benue an omo ibo?
Thats how being called omoibo or Igbo comes across to me.
If Tinubu is correct, then GEJ will lose.

GEJ needs to cut a deal, fast.
That is what Tinubu wants, unfortunately it doesn't seem to have been recieved that way. He is about to be smashed to smithereens, exept there is a miracle.
He tried to play Ciroma's game and did it very badly. In fact, he should have watched the Ciroma saga very carefully and closely, cos what you see  might be an illusion.
Maybe he would have caught sight of Chiroma's very own dear wife jeering him yesterday and played a more responsible tune, but it looks too late in the day now; the dogs are out. lol
Politics › Re: Fashola Calls For Presidential Debates by Beaf: 9:05am On Feb 27, 2011

So just because Fashola was not mentioned means he is no good ehh. Fashola has received various awards internationally on leadership and governance. I don't hear about Akpabio receiving awards. Anyways I don't know why you are here trying to argue who is better. If both are doing good, thats all I care about. Each have their own unique challenges to deal with. Lagos has a lot more challenges than Akwa Ibom.

again i ask What meaninful debate would Fashola have against Akpabio if they are not contesting for same office?
The long and short, is that Fashola should keep quiet, he is overhyped and fooling himself only. Unbiased watchers have named the real models as Akpabio, Amaechi and Oshiomole.

If anybody is to keep on heating the air about the presidency in ACN, it should be Ribadu.
