Ajegunle must host at least 30% of Lagos population, then there are areas like Orile, Berger, Okokomaiko, Badagry and neglected areas like Ikorodu and Epe. So, its not gonna be a walk in the park.

Energy Updates
Mar 1, 2011

MoUs for construction of $20billion Petrochemical/Fertilizer underway
Govt to earn over $680billion annually after passage of PIB
Nigeria now earns over $282million per day from crude

By Hector Igbikiowubo
PRESIDENT Goodluck Ebele Jonathan yesterday in Lagos unveiled a chain of planned projects for the Nigeria oil and gas industry aimed at enhancing the country’s status as the hub of petro-chemical business on the continent and to reap bountifully from the vast deposits of hydrocarbon through job creation.

Speaking at the Lagos leg of the ongoing nationwide Peoples Democratic Party Presidential rally, Diezani Alison-Madueke, the Minister of Petroleum Resources who reeled out the projects on behalf of the Federal Government, revealed that in continuation of its industrialisation agenda, the administration is determined to strengthen Lagos bourgeoning reputation as a mega city through the upgrade and rebirth of critical gas based industries.

She said that in the weeks ahead, the Federal Government will execute some binding MoUs with a consortium of International Oil and Gas firms for the construction of a Petrochemical plant and some fertilizer processing plants in Lagos and some other parts of the country valued at over $20 billion.

“Petrochemical plants mean fertilizer plants that will increase our agriculture and food production and methanol plants that will boost industrial production with a combined initial investment of about $20billion this will result in the creation of over 300,000 jobs across the nation,” Mrs. Alison-Madueke said.

The Minister also disclosed that the establishment of two new Liquefied Natural Gas, LNG plants, in Olokola in Ogun/Ondo States and Brass LNG in Bayelsa state, will create over 7,000 jobs and inject over $1billion into the host communities.

Commenting on the proposed oil industry reform legislation, the Minister informed that upon the envisaged passage by the legislature, the Petroleum Industry Bill will ensure that Government’s revenue is increased to the tune of over $680 billion annually while ensuring provision of unprecedented opportunities for level playing field for operators in the industry.

“The PIB when it becomes law will move Nigerian business men and women such as your good selves into the commanding heights of the oil and gas industry.”

Mrs. Alison-Madueke informed that as a result of the success of the Federal Government Amnesty Programme for repentant Niger Delta militant youths, Nigeria now earns average revenue of over $282 million dollars per day from crude oil based on the combined daily production figure of crude and condensate which stands at 2.4million barrels.

“Many of you will recall that eight months ago the nation’s crude oil production was as low as one million barrels per day. However, as I speak to you today, thanks to the vigorous implementation of the Amnesty Programme of this administration, the story is different. It means increased average revenue for Government which this administration is now using to provide the much desired dividends of democracy to the citizenry. Whether you look into education, roads or health care, there is improvement in the provision of these services to the citizens of this nation,” she pointed out.

While paying tribute to the President for promptly signing into law the Nigerian Content Bill, Mrs. Alison- Madueke explained that by so doing Dr. Jonathan has succeeded in domiciling a huge chunk of the over $20 billion oil industry annual spend which was hitherto ferreted abroad to improve the economy of other nations.

“By giving our country a Nigerian Content Act, the President has reversed the trend. This means; a retention of $10billion out of 20 billion average annual industry expenditure, creation of over 30,000 direct employment and training opportunities, establishment of three to four new pipe mills to service industry demands as well as the development of some dockyards and utilization of existing shipyards among others,” the minister stated.

On the downstream sector, the minister announced that plans are on to speed up the process leading to the construction of three proposed Greenfield refineries in Lagos, Kogi and Bayelsa states to completely eliminate product importation while assuring that the Ministry through the NNPC has intervened to ease-off the recent artificially induced gap in the supply and distribution of Kerosene in some parts of the country through massive injection of extra volumes into the market to force down the price.

FoI Bill: Presidency disowns Abba Aji
NewsMar 2, 2011
By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor & Kenneth Ehigiator

The presidency, yesterday, disowned Senator Mohammed Abba-Aji, a presidential aide, following the denunciation of the Freedom of Information, FOI, Bill passed by the House of Representatives last week.

Presidential spokesman, Mr Ima Niboro, speaking to newsmen in Lagos, yesterday, said Abba-Aji did not convey the President’s opinion as he was not in a position to speak for him.

“Abba-Aji spoke as an individual; he was not speaking for the Federal Government. I speak for the president and the Information Minister speaks for the government.

“And in the matter of laws, the Attorney-General who is the Chief Law Officer speaks for the government. If the speech does not come from any of the three of us, then he is purely speaking for himself,” Niboro said.

Meanwhile, Abba Aji, yesterday came under fire with a cross section of civil society and lawmakers calling for his sack.

Particularly incensed were former journalists in the National Assembly with erstwhile President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Senator Smart Adeyemi, describing the presidential aide as a bad adviser and an embarrassment to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Rep. Abike Dabiri, a lead sponsor of the bill that was passed last week in the House of Representatives, called for the prompt dismissal of Abba-Aji from his position as Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly as a calculated message to Nigerians that he was not speaking the President’s mind. She blamed Abba-Aji for being the major canvasser against the FoI Bill during his tenure in the immediate past Senate.

Others who responded included erstwhile Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr. Emmanuel Arigbe-Osula, who described the presidential aide’s comments as despicable and Dame Carol Ajie, a leading civil rights activist.

He is a bad adviser- Adeyemi

Responding yesterday, Senator Adeyemi said: “It is reckless, unguarded and capable of tarnishing the good image of our party and I advise Mr. President not to listen to him and I hope the NUJ and other progressives will take him up on it.

Even though he is a member of our party, I feel ashamed and embarrassed by him. He is a bad adviser, Mr. President should not listen to him,” Adeyemi told Vanguard yesterday.

Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Eruwa, another former journalist, serving in the House of Representatives was equally furious as she called for the immediate sack of the presidential aide to underline the President’s distance from the comments.

Noting Abba-Aji’s long standing opposition to the FoI Bill and his role in killing the Bill while he served in the Senate, she said the presidential aide had now fully revealed himself to be a notable enemy of Nigerians.

It is despicable- Arigbe-Osula

Mr. Emmanuel Arigbe-Osula, on his part, described the reported moves by presidential aide as despicable, saying that such intentions were the lot of corrupt men who are against the transparency that the envisaged FoI law would shine on governance.

Arigbe-Osula, now a chieftain of the PDP in Edo State while commending the House of Representatives for muscling courage to pass the legislation also charged the Senate to quickly give its concurrence to the bill.

Flaying the presidential aide yesterday, Arigbe-Osula said: “It is despicable and insulting to Nigerians for any descent politician to want to frustrate the Freedom of Information Bill. Only those who are corrupt who want to perpetuate the fraud that characterized all these 12 years of democracy would want the FOI bill dead,” Arigbe-Osula said.

Civil rights activist, Dame Ajie, on her part said the counsel of the presidential aide was irrelevant, saying he failed to give any provision of the laws that would constrain the President from signing the bill

It was gathered that Senator Tinubu, who received the SSS invitation on Monday, arrived at its headquarters at exactly 3.15p.m. in Abuja, on Tuesday.

According to our source, he was quizzed over his utterances which the service considered as security “risk” but was later released on self recognisance.

“He (Tinubu) has been making some statements considered unhealthy for peaceful coexistence in recent times. The service deemed it fit to interact with him over such issues,” a source said.

Lagos Ohanaeze lists conditions for Fashola’s endorsement
By PETER ANOSIKE
Wednesday, March 2, 2011

The Lagos State chapter of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has listed conditions for which it would endorse the candidacy of the incumbent Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola in the April 16, governorship election.

Speaking after an emergency general meeting of the association yesterday in Lagos, the President, Chief Oliver Akubueze said after due consultations with other Igbo socio-cultural organizations, market associations and town unions, they came to an agreement that Fashola should appreciate the contributions Igbos are making towards the development of the state and should reciprocate it by carrying them along in the scheme of things in the state.

According to the president, it was agreed that more Igbos should be appointed commissioners in his cabinet as well as into boards of parastatals and agencies in the state. According to him, Ndigbo in Lagos are full of praises of Fashola’s first term in office and agreed that he deserves another term.

However, he said the governor should ensure that Ndigbo is not left behind in the scheme of things going by the large number in the state as well as their contributions to the development of the state.
“After due consultations with the other Igbo socio-cultural organizations here in Lagos as well as town unions and market associations, Ohanaeze which is the apex Igbo socio-cultural organizations has come out with conditions by which we will endorse Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola for second term. I also want to make it clear that these are the conditions to endorse Fashola as an individual candidate but not his party.

We have already endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for the presidency. This is very important. The conditions are that Governor Fashola should appreciate our contributions to the development of the state and should reciprocate that by appointing Igbos as commissioners. In his cabinet what we are asking are not out of place because Ndigbo make up about 46 percent of the total population of the state. But this does not reflect in political appointment, she should also appoint Igbo into the boards of parastatals and agencies. Our business interests and welfare also need more protection. However, we acknowledged that the governor performed wonderfully well in his first term and as it said in politics ‘One good term deserves another’.

Akubueze also commended the Ndigbo for turning out in their large numbers during the voters registration exercise.
He advised them to vote wisely in the April general elections.
Aknbueze said that it was not fair that KAI, LASTMA and other agencies should always target the Igbos for exploitation.
The Lagos Ohanaeze boss said that he is not saying that whoever goes against the rules and regulations in the state should not be punished but that his worry is the discriminatory way of giving the punishment which has made it obvious that the Igbos are the major target.

Politics › Sss Quizzes Tinubu • Tribunal Begins Trial Next Week by Beaf(op): 12:38am On Mar 02, 2011
SSS quizzes Tinubu •Tribunal may begin his trial next week
Wednesday, 02 March 2011

OPERATIVES of the Department of the State Security Service (SSS), on Tuesday, quizzed former governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu. According to a high security source, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) chieftain was reportedly quizzed at the SSS headquarters, otherwise known as Yellow House, Abuja.

Though no official reason was given by the SSS for the questioning, the Nigerian Tribune learnt that it might not be unconnected with Tinubu’s pending case at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, as well as his recent outburst at the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) rally in Ibadan, during which he reportedly called President Goodluck Jonathan a “drunkard.”

The former governor is also said to have a case file before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Nigerian Tribune learnt that the former governor was left off the hook after the questioning around 4.15p.m.

Efforts to get official confirmation on the questioning of Senator Tinubu from the service were not successful as the telephone lines of SSS spokesperson, Maryln Ogar, an Assistant Director of Public Relations, were defective.

However, a top operative in the service, who wanted anonymity confirmed the questioning, saying it was a normal routine that could be extended to anybody.

Meanwhile, with the swearing in of the new acting chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Yakubu Umar on Tuesday, the stage appears set for the commencement of the prosecution of past and present public officers indicted for alleged violation of the asset declaration law.

Nigerian Tribune, on Tuesday, exclusively reported the appointment and swearing-in of Umar by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu.

The covert swearing in reportedly took place around 10.00 a.m at the Supreme Court, with a handful staff of the Code of Conduct Tribunal present.

Code of Conduct Bureau spokesperson, Mrs Idowu Jokpeyibo, confirmed the swearing-in to the Nigerian Tribune, on Tuesday.

It was also gathered on Tuesday night that the Federal Government, through the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, had almost concluded arrangement for the appointment of two other members that would be sitting on cases with the acting chairman.

The tribunal is a three-member panel, though two members are required to form a quorum.

It was further learnt that the tribunal might start sitting from next week, which would see to the commencement of the trial of Senator Tinubu and others charged before the tribunal by the Code of Conduct Bureau for violation of assets declaration law.

The two members are expected to be appointed and sworn in before the end of the week.

I do not hate the man neither do I admire him but I hate it when certain ministers knowing that we are a very religious people lead us on by inciting religious sentiments and playing on our respect for God and men of God.

Tunde has a simple question to answer.

"While He carried out his Save Nigeria Group (SNG) activities Was he already a Card carrying member of a political party such as the CPC? Did he have biased political affiliations for example with Buhari and CPC while pretending to be an impartial, non-partisan minister of God and Social crusader for good governance?"

I ask this because you don't pick a Vice Presidential candidate from the blues. In fact nobody just wakes up and gets nominated to fly the flag of a party in any executive position by staying non-partisan.

This question begs an answer or answers, (if you like)
These are very important questions. Is Bakare two faced? The constitution is clear that one must be sponsored by a political party at that level of contest. When exactly did he join CPC?

As for journalists, Buhari sent them to jail, simply for speaking the truth at a time truth was banned so long as Buhari deemed it embarrassing.

Buhari also introduced a law under which he could lock you up and throw away the key, simply if he didn't like you, your mum or your dog. Under that law, there was no legal redress; if the monster locked you up, you were basically fcked.

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, stated reasons every property he has, including all his accounts, are domiciled in the country, saying that it was borne out of his belief that where a man’s treasures are there his heart also will be.

This came as he noted that he personally did not believe that one became a ‘big man’ by simply holding a public office.

Jonathan, in a comment on his Facebook page, entitled, “The core of who I am” said public office, to him, was not a means to adding value to the holder, adding that people with that type of mentality were only borrowing moral authority from the office they occupied.

He described the people who accused him of being humble to the point of servility as persons who did not understand that the whole purpose of public office was to serve.

According to the president, “public office, to me, is not a means to adding value to the holder of the office. Public office is the vehicle through which social harmony, happiness and inspirational communal existence is promoted and enhanced.”

He said the late president, Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua, while he was alive, used to say they were servant leaders, adding that “we have not come to demand service from Nigeria but to give service.

“This is the principal reason why I opened this page to communicate with Nigerians. I am acutely aware that I do not hold this position of president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the wishes of any power other than the freely given mandate of the Nigerian people and the grace of God.

“And that is why I communicate with you because next to the Almighty God, the Nigerian people are my power source and, just as an electrical appliance will not work when not connected to its power source, so also can I not work effectively if I am not connected with you, the good people of Nigeria.

“And while there are politicians who have substantial commitment to Nigeria and others who may have partial commitment to Nigeria, my commitment to Nigeria is total and there is evidence to back it up.

“It is believed that a man’s greatest treasures are his children and immediate family and the proverb goes that where a man’s treasures are there his heart also will be. All my children, every last one of them school in Nigeria and of course my wife and I are fully on the ground. Some might describe other treasures a man has as his real estate property. And again every property I have in life is in Nigeria. Some might consider money as another treasure and again all my accounts every last one of them is domiciled in Nigeria. In everything I do I make a conscious decision to put Nigeria first whether it is in my dressing or the food I eat, or even the music I listen to. I am totally sold out on Nigeria.
@Beef, pele o. I know that the presence of AFRICOM will essentially put you millitant bunkerers out of business - I agree with you, you people should be very afraid of that organization.

I frankly don't give a hoot whether they have a base in the ND or not.

@ROSSIKE, na wettin be ya own sef? Why are you pretending not to know that the Americans have been pushing to establish a Africom base in your backyard? rakumin dajij
Ever since I have known you on NL, you have been campaigning for AFRICOM to set up in Port Harcourt (Warri is a new addition today, perhaps you visited). Why would any Nigerian wish to sell his soul for tupence to foreigners?
What is with aboki and oil that all common sense evaporates very fast?

One thing I can assure you of, is that your part of the country would be of zero use to the US if they ever set foot in Nigeria; instead they would more likely arm the South very heavily as a bulwark against any al qaeda's or wayward almajiri's. You will be seriously subjugated as trouble makers.

Why pray for foreigners to set up in your country? Dude, it isn't normal, thats traitorous behaviour all for "born to rule" love of oil.

Bash Ali said that, “I am proud to be a Nigerian… I am proud of this encouraging exercise. Home is home… and home is sweet nothing is more comforting than to be among your people at home.”
